Announcement: Level 7 Civil Servant recaps now with less Joo-won

Okay, I have to get serious for a moment to address an issue that has just come to our attention. Dramabeans has had its very first DCMA takedown notice delivered, and sadly this is not a “Baby’s first milestone” sort of celebratory event. The notice came with scary legal lingo and accompanying threats to discontinue our hosting service if we don’t comply with the demands to take down our Level 7 Civil Service recaps.

I know, I know, the show is crap, but I confess to being really flummoxed and upset and maybe a little shaking in rage right now about it all. Korea is pretty welcoming of screencap usage and often encourages the practice, so while I am not going to argue the point about copyright, I have to say that I feel a little sucker-punched.

We’d offer more details if we understood them, but at this point all we know is that the complaint was made about the Level 7 recaps specifically, that our infringement is regarding the photos, and that the agent filing the complaint represents Dramafever, which is cited as the owner of intellectual property rights.

Yeah, we’re confused. We don’t understand. But we don’t want our site poofed either, so we’re taking down all Level 7 recap images. Sorry to everyone who loves to gaze upon Joo-won’s beautiful face without having to sit through the drudgery of actually watching the show. We’re super bummed too. We hope you understand, but please don’t worry that recaps will die because of this! Girlfriday and I will still be recapping through the bitter end, and yes, I’m pretty sure it’ll be bitter.

On the other hand: FEEL FREE (we actively encourage it, in fact) to submit hand-drawn images! Stick figures just as welcome as abstract interpretation and hand-placed Mediterranean tiled mosaic art. We’re not picky, and we’re not discriminating!

I'm sure other bloggers must review L7CS and post screen caps; has anyone checked to see if DramaBeans is the only site targeted?

Just received a response to my e-mail to DramaFever. Yay!

"It has come to our attention that one of the third parties we use to protect our licensed content inadvertently caused problems for our friends at Dramabeans. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused.

We have taken the necessary steps to reverse any claims made and correct this issue. We hope to continue to have an amiable relationship with Dramabeans, which provides a valuable voice in the community of Korean drama fans.

I guess when enough of us cancel our prime membership they actually do listen. This was so ridiculous. I'm still not sure, even if they do fix the issue, that I want to rejoin. I understand protecting your investment, but this was so far over the line. Like so many others I only found Dramafever by coming to this website.

Hopefully they really have taken the steps to fix this. I guess we wait for an update from JB or GF.

The lesson here is don't mess with Beaners! We can be a nasty bunch if you cross us!

In my all-important opinion, DramaFever is shooting themselves in the foot. Instead of fighting against Dramabeans, they should be working with this site. It isn't like y'all are stealing their revenue or anything. In fact you'd be helping them. A viewer curious about the show but not yet sure they want to watch could read a couple of recaps here and then if they're interested they can go over to Dramafever to watch the actual series. Everybody wins.

We have bigger issues, we just lost all the torrents links for the big 4 stations. Now we don't even have the raw episodes to watch.

Come on, Dramafever is only in the US. How come the rest of the world is penalized for this? This is so NOT fair. How are they going to encourage an international audience if only the US/Canada can access DF. Plus the fact is that not all of us NEED subs to watch a drama. I can't even watch it on viki as well.

NOT HAPPY today with the DCMA issue and the stupid law firm which is issuing notices everywhere.

I agree. They are very short-sighted. If the point is for them to eventually dominate the US audience and expand internationally, shouldn't they be happy about growing international interest in these dramas?

Then when they are ready to roll things out, there will be a primed and ready audience and they won't have to grow their own from scratch. One advantage that DramaFever does have is a very comprehensive, focused and ORGANIZED collection of dramas. That's not true of every site out there.

Basic economics, people, it's better for everyone if the ENTIRE PIE is bigger, and then you worry about getting a bigger slice of said pie.

ck10z, could you clarify. When did "We just lost all the torrents links for the big 4 stations" When did this happen?

Why did it happen.

I am vaguely aware that governments are trying to take away our freedoms on the internet but have been too busy and not personally affected enough to learn more.

Today, via the Dramabeans/Dramafever DCMA stink, I became personally affected. So if you could give me more info or if you would rather just give me links to the info, I would be grateful.

and thanks for the subs ;-)!

Go check your streaming sites. They do not have Thursday's episodes of L7CS, TWTWB etc. Someone has put up a takedown notice for the torrents links for the MBC, KBS and SBS dramas.

God, I am so angry right now I can't even rant. There a couple of sites- maybe who have links. However remember the srt subs are synched to Kor and Hanrel versions. The one I found is a HDTV version raw episode link.

Some viewers, not saying you, don't realize the bigger implication to the international audience not living in the US. We can't get the raw episodes to watch, much less have subs. I can't even at this point... want to sound reasonable towards DF which is a US business, wanting to protect their intellectual property rights. I think as a company it's selfish and aggressive.

Can you imagine the rest of us who don't depend on DF and do watch Korean dramas? International licensing rights for a completed dramas to certain countries does not beat watching an episode live streaming or watching a couple of hours post airing.

This is one time I want the Netizens to find out the name and address of this law firm which DF hired and give them an earful.

Which link are you using? The 3 torrents sites I use have notices to stop upload. Plus I usually download Hanrel and Kor.
Would appreciate the main page link for all Kdrama uploads for the night... not specific to TWTWB.

Thank you.

I posted this on the DF blog: (it is not as articulate and informed as I would like but there you go)

I have heard that:

"It has come to our attention that one of the third parties we use to protect our licensed content inadvertently caused problems for our friends at Dramabeans. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused."

has not just caused problems for our Dramabeans site but to a whole host of live streaming sites of the Korean network feeds.

This issue is MUCH BIGGER THEN JUST OUR DRAMABEANS. the "THIRD PARTIES" are rattling cages all over the internet and it is possible they have overstated their case. It is possible they have no legal footing.

This K-drama community is solely internet based, if Dramafever fouls this pond where do they intend to find their customers? This is short-sighted and Dramafever might consider getting a handle on these “Third Parties”. Before it alienates the customer base.

Hahaha! Dramafever is taking it too serious with this drama. I was one of those that enjoyed Jowoon's pics without watching 7LCS, especially cuase it's nowhere to be found on youtube.

So I was mad, on your behalf, and I couldn' t help but check the "linky" you recommend at the end of your page DF. IMO, you should take their name down. They are so mean!

Hi guys..

Yeah, but like what some comments said, there are other issues. DF is attacking other websites too, including torrents. What are they trying to do, monopolizing the business and disturbing the fans??

Hopefully, I dont have any dramas to watch right now. It's good enough to read awesome recaps from DB

actually i knew about dramafever from this site. you always recommend to go there to watch drama legally. back then, dramafever was just starting. i never like dramafever, i think it's too slow for me. but then, they're doing this. they probably will be the last resort for me; only if i can't find a drama anywhere else.
i know they got the licence.. but actually stopping recap? screencap? they're just bully now to me.

Totally hate Dramafever. If it wants to shutdown recapping sites and subbing sites make your material available to people in all regions.

AS it is in Malaysia,Dramafever is not available.

i understand subbing sites although those ppl spend time to rip the subs, its not like every1 like a paid model plan.Ripping only makes things more widely available.

Dramafever you are not a premium site offering special products.Hate you.dont understand need to make copyright over pictures.

Dramabeans we always love u gals.Fighting.

You have my support all the way, Dramabeans!

dramabeans,

please don't let the legal team bully you into forced compliance. When they use strongly worded warnings and cite a bunch of legal terms, the lawyers are trying to intimidate you into listening to them, but what they are doing isn't right.

If they want to get legal, there is a catchphrase under intellectual property that says that for educational purposes, you may use these resources. Dramabeans has always been on an educational level. Whether they want to argue how educational, that's another issue. So please don't let them intimidate you.

What the heck is wrong with dramafever these days? They seem bent on drama-world domination. (I won't even talk about their blog which just...well, i won't talk about it.)

I haven't been watching Civil Servant but I totally defend your right to recap anything you want and to upload any pics you want.

I'm just wondering what other evil scheming dramafever is up to. This could be a hint of other flaky stuff to come.

Fighting!

Please continue with the stick figures till the bitter end as a sign that you don't depend on DF for your excellent quality of service to your consumers. Who needs DF anyway? I was so done with DF before this cluster happened anyway. I hate their interface and it just seemed like wayy too much trouble to just get to watching whatever drama I wanted. Viki is so much better and the community over there is hilarious. If something isn't playing on Viki, I just reply on the Korean version and the recaps. I need to learn Korean anyways...Speaking of which, if anyone knows of any good resources to learn Korean, that would be great! My language partner and I never seem to have schedules that allow us to meet as often as we want.

Thanks!

Wow. I can't believe that I did not know about any of this! I, as many have already stated, found out about Dramafever through Dramabeans and Tumblr. I've been looking for MySoju hearing that it was being updated and it would be running again soon, but that seems not to be the case. Super disappointed in Dramafever. I am sorry that this had to happen to Dramabeans. I will definitely continue to support Dramabeans even more-so than I do now. I'm not sure where I will watch my dramas now, but I can wait if I have to.

Low blow Dramafever. Low blow.

I'm really surprised to read this. It seems blind and ultimately self-defeating. Paying customers don't randomly come to Dramafever - I'd wager many of their customers came via a site like this, a fan site full of enthusiasts sharing recommendations and discussing the shows. The next step for people like me who don't live in Korea is to find a way to watch some of these shows - so then we find the likes of Dramafever.

There's a worrying lack of awareness here on how their business model works IMO. They NEED you, Dramabeans. You help generate their customer base.

Forgive me if this has been pointed out already, but I believe DF was purchased/partnered with another company not too long ago, one that is apparently Spanish in nature. They uploaded a glut of Spanish language shows, with most still waiting to be complete. If this whole Spanish Company thing is true, I can see the new guys jumping all over anyone they think is infringing on their "money" shows.

What execs don't seem to realize is that actions like these are what cause viewers to turn to illegal downloading. If they purchase rights then don't bother to post the show, or post it too slowly, viewers will find it in other places. I'm not condoning the practice by any means, I'm just stating what appears to be true.

I was one of the first with a DF premium pay service, as well. Up until the last few months, I've had no problems with them. But now they seem to have become way too big way too fast, with too many hands in the K-Drama kimchi pot. Too many older, completed dramas uploaded without being translated (I've been waiting 5 months for new episodes of one drama that was complete about 6 years ago). Too many Big Boys screaming about infringement without bothering to analyze the community. If they continue to alienate their payer base their foundation will crumble, and then it won't matter who posts pictures of what actor/actress or drama.

@AuntieMame, thanks for the info. I'd recently read about that deal on another site. This is how a certain country's trying to deal with their home-grown bullies, now entering the kdrama arena: http://dawn.com/2013/03/12/mexico-reforms-against-slim-televisa/

For them, those tactics are "par for the course".

There's a definite reason why I, as a latina, do not watch telenovelas and prefer kdramas. DF's new investors' "trend" doesn't attract me in the least and I'd advise kdrama lovers on DF to beware of that tendency.

Sad. At least I've never used - and never will use - Dramafever.

Although I can't say I'm sad to see some streaming sites go down. I see a lot of these sites stealing Japanese shows, pointedly ignoring the subbers' requests to prohibit online streaming. (And some sites even having the audacity to claim the works as their own. Makes me reel in disgust when I see fans thanking them for "subbing" their favourite dramas.) Fansubbing is not exactly a legal activity anyway, but uploading them on streaming sites and MAKING A PROFIT from ads puts the whole thing into a completely black area. Korean dramas/subbers seem to be a lot more lax about it though... (I suppose Korean entertainment seems so keen on globalisation anyway...)

what i would like to know, please someone answering it, DMCA to soompi >>> IS IT ANYTHING RELATED TO DRAMAFEVER ????? since the date of the news from soompi is almost same with the DMCA for dramabeans ??

is it dramafever is the real evil behind that DMCA to Soompi ???

if Yes, i will totally hacked that site no matter what, i don't how, but i will ruined DF if that rumour is true.

becoz now i am affraid to posting in soompi especially in kdrama forum, i am affraid i wiil get banned .

btw, To dramafever : i am even never access to your website but why on earth you have to mess around with dramabeans, for a sake, dramabeans only recap with their own effort and not steal your any damm subs or else, back off dramafever !!!!!
