New Hong sisters drama in planning, Kang So-ra denies casting rumors

Here’s a mini-update on the new drama in the works by the star writing duo the Hong sisters (Hong Jung-eun, Hong Mi-ran), which was announced last fall as a reteaming of the writers with PD Park Hong-kyun, with whom they worked on their zippy metaphor-laden screwball rom-com Best Love. (His other credits include Queen Seon-deok and New Heart.)

Back then the show was under consideration at MBC, which has now confirmed that the Hongs will be back with a drama this year; their last show for the broadcaster was 2011’s Best Love (after which they did a drama for KBS, Big, and one for SBS, Master’s Sun). They’ve written for all of the Big Three at this point, with three dramas for KBS, four for SBS, and this new show being their third for MBC. The synopsis is not yet out so we don’t know yet what type of show they’re planning; in the absence of plot information, the big question right now is what stars they’ll cast, and the buzzing has already begun.

Speculation started circulating that Kang So-ra (hot off the massive success of Misaeng) was positively considering the lead role, only to be shot down by her management right away, who stated that she has not received an offer and that the show has not released a script yet. The refutation came almost as quickly as the articles popped up, so perhaps they were completely groundless; still, now that the name’s been mentioned, I really wouldn’t mind seeing her headline a Hong sisters drama. Too bad the speculation was quashed so swiftly.

The writing team is such a well-loved brand that I can see how mere talk of a new series could kickstart a rumor frenzy, since they’ve done good things for many of their leads, either by making brand-new stars out of unknowns/lesser-knowns (Lee Jun-ki, Lee Da-hae, Han Ye-seul, Kang Ji-hwan) or giving established ones a new spin on their image (Cha Seung-won, So Ji-sub). They’ve only had one real flop out of nine shows, and even their less-successful dramas (in terms of ratings) have been high-buzz, active-fandom dramas (such as You’re Beautiful), so no doubt the casting process will garner a ton of attention in the coming months.

The new, as-yet-unnamed Hong sisters drama is aiming for a May broadcast.

Wish they really extend the offer to kang sora.. and pairing with lee jong suk.. their chemistry was sizzling in doctor stranger, but unfortunately the writer was too adamant with their doctor-cum spy couple...

I've been a loyal Hong sister drama fan and "Delighful girl Chunghyang" is my all time favorite drama and also the only drama i have watched multiple times. It always cheers me up when i'm feeling down or blue.

As for the cast,i would love to see- Kang sora and Yoo yeun-seok(Chilbongie left a huge dent in my heart, its about time YYS gets the girl) . If not Kang Sora then i definitely Moon Chae won.

I love the Lee Jong Seok - Kang Sora pairing. They were the only good thing I can remember in DS.

Yes also to suggested male leads: Lee Min Ho, Kim Soo Hyun, Seo In Gook, Kim Woo Bin, Im Siwan, Sung Joon

Yes to female leads: Lee Yoobi, Jung So Min, Go Ara, Yoo Inna, Song Ji-hyo, Han Groo

Not really in favor of Ji Chang-wook (he's good but right now I feel he's too overrated), Yoo Yeon-seok (same reason), Kim Seul-gi (she's good as the second lead scene stealer), Moon Chae-won, Shim Eun Kyung, Joo Won

Too bad Ji Hyun-woo's doing Angry Mom already and Choi Jin Hyuk's enlisting soon.

Would love to see in a Hong Sisters drama:
Choi Siwon
Yoo Ah-in
Yoochun
Jung Il-woo
Jang Hyuk
Rain
Park Seo-joon
Jung Kyung-ho
Mr. Hand Towel (because unexpectedly he's good in comedy)
Eric
Jo Hyun-jae (Kang-aaaaah!)

Ha Yeon-soo
Jang Nara
Lee Shi-yeon
Choi Sooyoung
Chae Rim
Jung Ryeo-won
Hong Soo-hyun
Kim Tae-hee
Wang Ji-hye
Ha Jiwon

Or any of their previous leads except those in HGD & Big.

Strange seeing your suggested male leads and your "hope to see" males and then you saying Ji Chang Wook is overrated... If I have to be honest, at least 2 of your males are overrated and overexposed.

I have no idea why you think JCW is overrated, is it because of the recent attention he gets on DB? because from what I know, he started his craft earlier than some of the guys on your list but he is nowhere even near 1/2 of some of their popularity. He started in 2008 (I think?) and he only got "this popular" starting from 2014... so I'm really not sure where the "overrated" part comes into play... unless you're talking about drama viewers praising his talent? While I don't find his Healer character that impressive, his Empress Ki role is 10x better than the roles done by at least 1/3 of the guys on your list imo. He owned that sh!t

Ji Chang-wook debuted in Youna's "Only Broke Up Today"'s MV, and only heard of him when he got the titular role in "Smile Dong-hae" (which also made me discover Lee Jang-woo). Other than that I have no more idea as you do...

The reason why Ji Chang-wook is "overrated" is all because of "Empress Qi", and TBH, the drama itself is as much overrated as "The Heirs": too much emphasis on the scenery and the wardrobe, nonsense storyline, and complete disregard of history by portraying traitors as heroes.

This is exciting! I was waiting for their comeback since Master's Sun. Hope they'll pick a good pair. History suggests they've never failed in casting the right people. Personally, I'd love Park Bo Young to make a drama comeback. Yoo Ah In in comedy would be great too! I don't really care who they pick though because I like their writing style. Much more excited for the plot!

Misaeng is a hard act to follow. Regular broadcast dramas with the best names have had weak ratings since last year with TMWCFTS and Empress Ki being the exceptions (I don't count family and daily dramasl). She really needs to land a solid role in a potential box office hit movie while she's still the IT girl of the acting world. A Hong Sisters' drama might be buzzworthy, but if the character she plays is major step down it's not worth it.

Kim Jae Wook please! It's longgg overdue for him to be a lead! He tends to play more serious characters but his brief courting in Inspiring Generation was so fun and I think he could hit it out of the park in a Hong's Sisters drama! (Side thought: how is it possible that he becomes hotter with age *thinking of Who Are You*)

Not really sure who I'd want to pair him with... so many great actresses! Maybe Lee Chung Ah (loved her cameo in High School King of Savvy and Flower Boy Ramen Shop). Or Ha Ji Won!!!

Ha Ji Won always seems to pick "heavy" characters to play...except maybe her role in Secret Garden. She doesn't strike me as one that the Hong Sisters would cast as a lead.

I didn't like Kang Sora much from Dream High, but after watching her in Sunny I just started adoring her. While her acting in Misaeng just cemented my love for her even more haha

It'd be great if she did get a role in the Hong sisters drama, and really boost her popularity.

New Hong-jamae drama? YAY!
Kang Sora as lead? Maybe No...I still hadn't forgotten that awful mess that was "Dream High 2"

TBH, tho, I don't know if anyone would agree with me, but...I think the sisters are losing their signature quirk & charm. After "My Girl" their recent dramas didn't quite catch on to memory quite well (the most glaring would be the "Drama-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named"; even my mother, being a fellow K-drama addict, wouldn't even want to watch past the few minutes of "Master's Sun" episode 1 just because it has ghosts.

I correct myself: "My Girl" wasn't the only drama that ever caught on to me, there were "Delightful Girl Chun-hyang" & "You're Beautiful", in the latter's case I had a case of withdrawal ever since it ended, but it made me discover K-Pop, asianfanfictions.net, & LiveJournal (in order) in the process; in a way, both dramas introduced me more onto Korea and becoming a fan.

So excited for this! Just a random thought: It would be interesting to see Hong sisters working with tVN :)

Q: What was the biggest flop out of the nine works of the Hongs?
