Jo Seung-woo considers cop drama Pied Piper for tvN

The moment I read that Jo Seung-woo (God’s Gift—14 Days) was in contention for tvN’s upcoming Pied Piper, the next drama from Liar Game PD Kim Hong-sun, I pretty much thought, “Yup, perfect fit.”

That’s partly because I think he’s great at everything, but also because he’s got the chops and the grit to carry a suspenseful cop show all about police crisis negotiators working to defuse emergency situations through words rather than action. Jo’s character would be the main lead, a former corporate negotiator (and a genius at it, of course) who joins the police team as its leader, working on crises as varied as hostage situations to attempted suicides to terror.

Jo Seung-woo has long been recognized as a talented actor in the film realm, but his drama experience is pretty sparse, so I’d be thrilled to have him back on TV soon. He took on historical drama Horse Healer in 2012, then the time-slipping crime-suspense drama God’s Gift—14 Days in 2014. Despite that show angering me in the final stretch, I really did love him as the dogged ex-detective wrestling with demons from his past while kicking ass helping Lee Bo-young track down her kidnapped daughter—we didn’t nickname him Captain Awesome for nuthin’. The ending tainted my appreciation for that show rather substantially but not for him, and I could totally dig this pairing with him and the director, who turned brain twisters and math puzzles into riveting, bite-your-nails tension in Liar Game. Think of what he could do with bigger stakes and actual life-or-death conundrums.

Pied Piper is being planned for a Monday-Tuesday run on tvN, to follow the upcoming webtoon adaptation series Cheese in the Trap. Its premiere will come in March.

When I read then news on my way home from work, I audibly gasped. I was that excited. I'm pretty sure that's my reaction to any of his casting news though.

Plus, his movie The Inside Men is having a grand ol' time in the box office, up to 2 million in 2 weeks and an R rated film at that. What a great way to end the year!

About time! I love how he mixed his work up. Movie, drama, musical or movie musical movie or drama musical drama. I love watching stage actors go back and forth like Hwang Jung Min, Jo Jung-suk, Shin Sung-rok etc.

This sounds awesome! I choose to forget the entire last episode in God's Gift so all I remember is Jo Seung-woo being great!

(I wonder why they chose that title though? It doesn't seem to fit.)

He must do it! He really was the best thing about God's Gift. Funnily, I can't be mad about the ending cuz I'm still not sure I understood what happened there.

JB, apologies. I know how hard you all work on getting information to us but this time, I didn't even have to read past the title.

I.am.in.

Writer-nim, let's have a good ending for JSW, please! I won't be able to take a repeat of his last drama ending.

Anything with Jo Seungwoo on it: I AM IN !!
I really, really, really love his acting. So so much.
And my heart still hurted with God's Gift 14 Days' ending. This show should heal it.
I wish the director will give another great series after Liar Game.
Jo Seungwoo + Kim Hongsun = This will be such a promising series!

tvN must, I repeat MUST, treat JSW better than SBS. The ending of God's Gift is the evidence of what happens when the station shows no respect whatasoever for the previous generation of really talented artists. Commercials and the Dr. Stanger's trailer ruined one amazing drama and its umpredictable finale.
Good luck to his new project because actors do need lots of it in K-ent nowadays...
