Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 14-20, 2015

Hey folks, we’re trying out a new feature here, posting the drama viewership rating numbers for the past week since we often find ratings discussions interesting. We’ve sometimes mentioned ratings for episodes in various drama recaps, but thought it might be helpful to collect them into one place.

So let us know what you think, and if the information is helpful, we’ll see how this list evolves going forward.

 My Daughter Geum Sa-wol 32 MBC 29.7%
 I Have a Lover 32 SBS 7.4%

You may notice some blanks for Sunday numbers; that’s because I want to post these lists on Sundays as a way to look back at the week, but the numbers sometimes aren’t released until later in the day. Rest assured they’ll be filled in when the ratings are released.

Also, we’ll do our best to include the cable numbers, which are often but not always available. We’re only posting prime-time dramas; we won’t be including daily series, morning dramas, variety, reality, or other non-scripted programs in the listings. That would get to be too much, and limiting this to drama series keeps things straightforward and relevant to our interests.

This week, Bubblegum ended its run on tvN with a modest 1.179% rating. That’s about where it’s been hovering all season, down as low as 0.71% and up as high as 1.736%. It’s been a disappointing run for the introspective rom-com-melodrama, which has largely received favorable reviews but hasn’t been one of tvN’s bigger buzz stories. That designation goes to pop-culture phenom Answer Me 1988, which continues to knock it out of the park with ever-increasing ratings. Those numbers would be considered good on broadcast, and are positively monstrous for tvN.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the relatively new legal melo-thriller Remember—Son’s War has taken over the lead slot, after a promising premiere last week. It began in second place at 7.2% and rose to 9.7% for its second episode, then managed to move past 41-episode sageuk drama Master of Trade—Inn 2015 with its third and fourth episodes.

And over on the weekends, all is holding steady in the current pattern with the long-running family dramas. I do note that I Have a Lover is bringing in pretty strong reviews and word of mouth despite its last-place status in the ratings, with some award buzz for Kim Hyun-joo.

And that’s all for this week!

I like this feature, would suggest that you include Rider's Catch Tomorrow on that list. It's a gem of a drama that not many are watching, has 12 episodes currently at episode 7.

I always check out the ratings on the recaps, so to have this new feature AND a side-commentary is really a good thing. Keep it up, DB! We Beanies love it.

AM 1988, though, we HAVE to give, like, a Nobel Prize award or something to Na PD (hyperbole much? haha) because the show has reached such heights for a cable TV that it even outweighed the ratings of a channel network! Even with the extended timeslot, it's setting up such a high standard. I've heard AM 1994's finale episode's ratings were beaten by AM 1988's episode, which just goes to show how phenomenal the Answer Me series is. I'm merely on Episode 2 but it's drawing me in with its warmth and deft directorial flair and it's focus on family, friends and support instead of a love triangle/interests, thank God.

(Although the husband game...THE HUSBAND GAME. Ugh.)

I don't think Na PD has much to do with the Reply franchise. I know he brings ratings in with is shows and works with the writer on Reply on everything, but Reply 1997 came out before Na PD did any variety on tvn so he's not responsible for the success of the show. Shin Won Ho and Lee Woo Jung deserve the prize. I would say especially Pd Shin Won Ho.

Well Na PD did win this year's Daesang (for TV) in the Baeksang Awards lol... This is usually awarded to an actor but Na PD won it for Grandpas Over Flowers and Three Meals a Day. xD

First time commenting here.

By the way, thanks for considering posting drama viewership ratings here. Even though the ratings won't totally matters whether we like the drama or not, we can't still avoid to look at the ratings despite how interesting, boring, addictive or not the drama will be. (Sometimes, it will also affect our views and opinions whether we will watch it or not.)
There are good dramas that have low or insufficient ratings despite of the stories that are aired through television - episodes. But these won't be totally necessary, as long as the story/script is solid and well-written, then, less worries and that's what matters most.

I Have a Lover is one of the best dramas I've watched. The plot and acting is top notch. I only wish it had better ratings.

i wish they could figure a way to tally online (global) streaming.

the production companies in korea would be amazed, don't you think? if i were them, i'd try to get numbers from the licensed sites - i bet the numbers are increasing exponentially, as more and more people are turned on to kdramas...

I am floored by the I Have A Lover numbers. Such a strong wonderfully drawn and performed story. But I'm not watching the others at all.

I love this feature. Thank you DB. I tend to search for it in Dramawiki for my favorite shows and love to compare. So, it is interesting to see them in one post. I will get even more lazy now.

Great idea! Maybe if the format could be in a chart, like a bar graph/line trend or pie graph?

I'm a visual person and it's also faster to see comparisons/trends.

I love the new things you al keep adding!

ratings discussion is indeed fun and informative. great job at making this comparative ratings report. i noticed though that it is not available prior to week of Dec. 14-20, 2015. a lot of kdrama fans [myself included :) ] also watch previously aired dramas it would be great if you could post comparative ratings report even for weeks before this started so that we could see how our favorite concluded dramas fared in the ratings game with their competitors. THANKS!
