Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 11

Now this is the kind of episode I’d been waiting for, and boy, does it deliver an emotional wallop. Everything seems to happen at once, leaving Su powerless against the much greater forces surrounding her. It’s not so easy for her suitors to swoop in and save the day this time, and the divide that causes may spell the end of one beloved relationship, while opening the door for another.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

So takes that one last, longing look at Su after ingesting the poison, and excuses himself before any of his symptoms can be revealed. Princess Yeonhwa jumps up as though to say something, but ends up merely smiling instead as she tells the king that she has a request on behalf of her brother, Wook.

As Su walks away, So stumbles in his attempt to follow her as the vision of her begins to blur. He reaches out his hand toward her, but it’s only when he coughs in a spray of blood that Su turns around and sees him. He falls, and Su immediately runs to his side to call for help.

He attempts to silence her so that she won’t be found with him, but he falls unconscious before he can tell her why. She just resumes her panicked cries for help.

Princess Yeonhwa claims that she also wants to make three toasts (as So did) before giving the king her requests. Queen Sinmyeongsunseong watches as Yeonhwa pours herself a cup from the crown prince’s tea. Even refreshed, is it still poisoned?

Her first request is for the king to let Wook remarry, prompting Wook to say that there is someone he has in mind. King Taejo permits the request without knowing who the girl is, and Yeonhwa brings the cup to her lips.

But instead of drinking, she stealthily pours the liquid down her sleeve. She acts as though she’s been poisoned, however, and dramatically swoons. Queen Sinmyeongsunseong scoffs at the act before announcing that it’s poison (as if she didn’t already know), while Yeonhwa weakly calls for them to help her half-brother, So.

Blood drips from the corner of Yeonhwa’s mouth as everyone around her panics. Baek-ah finds So and Su first, but the other princes aren’t far behind. Ninth prince Won immediately blames Su for serving the tea, though it’s Astronomer Choi who announces that she’s being arrested for attempted assassination of a prince.

Court Lady Oh watches as Su’s room is torn apart, though she recognizes that there’s a darker plan at work—Su wasn’t originally supposed to serve the tea, and the court lady who was has mysteriously gone missing.

Minister Park Young-gyu seems delighted when he finds a necklace (the one the crown prince gave her) among Su’s things, while one of the soldiers “finds” the vial of poison.

Queen Sinjeong frets as the royal doctor checks her daughter’s pulse, though he claims she’ll be fine. Only when the queen is gone does Yeonhwa rise from her bed, completely fine. She only pretended to drink the poison, she tells the doctor, and bit the inside of her lip to cause the bleeding.

This she announces freely to the doctor, while warning him to keep silent now that she’s freed herself from any suspicion. No one would believe that she willingly poisoned herself.

The antidote is spoon-fed to an unconscious So by another royal doctor as Astronomer Choi, Baek-ah, and Crown Prince Mu look on. Astronomer Choi notes that So just might make it because Grand General Park trained his body to resist poison, but neither of them can figure out why So would have drank three glasses. Surely he knew it was poison after the first.

Crown Prince Mu accurately guesses that the true target of the poison was him and not So, while Baek-ah and Astronomer Choi figure that he tried to leave before his symptoms could be known in order to protect the culprit. But who?

Wook finds said culprit curled up against the wall of a prison cell, and he takes in her bloodied hands when she grasps the wooden bars. He puts his hand over hers, but pulls away when her first question is to ask how So is doing.

Her concern for So seems to make Wook very unhappy, and it’s with a flat voice that he tells her that So will be fine. She needs to worry about herself now that she’s suspected of poisoning the tea, and while he believes in her innocence, there’s no proof.

He warns her that they might very well torture her to find out who was behind the poisoning, but he implores her to endure long enough for him to get her out. She puts on a brave face as she says that she won’t let them use her to frame someone else, so she’s prepared. (Hasn’t she ever seen a sageuk?)

At the next assembly, Minister Park posits that it was Crown Prince Mu who tried to poison So through Su. Mu vehemently defends himself, but Astronomer Choi stops him, lest he end up revealing his illness to the court.

Wook’s theory is that the poison was intended for the crown prince, but was accidentally given to So. Princess Yeonhwa’s poisoning proves as much, though it doesn’t alleviate any of the suspicion with regards to Su’s role in all of it.

King Taejo announces that Su will be hanged for her crime, but the crown prince isn’t willing to let another person die for him, even if it means keeping his illness under wraps. He asks that the king cast him aside instead, but Taejo refuses. Mu is his firstborn, and he wants to give him everything he can.

So attempts to leave his sickbed early to go to Su, who he knows must be alone and suffering. Wook updates him on the allegations against Su, and despite all of them knowing that it makes no sense, he can’t see a way to get her out of it. “I should have never let Hae Su get mixed up with you,” Wook adds, under his breath.

After sending Baek-ah away, So reveals to Wook that it was his mother who was behind the poisoning. At first, Wook accuses So of drinking the poison to protect his mother, but So claims that he did it to save Su and the crown prince.

So adds that he was trying to prevent anyone from finding out about it, but that all changed when Princess Yeonhwa drank the poison. He admits that he wasn’t able to say anything about it before it happened, but now he has to depend on Wook to expose Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s machinations and save Su.

That night, So goes to the prison to see Su trembling on the floor of her cell, covered in blood from the day’s torture. She rises with great difficulty, yet her only happiness is in seeing that So isn’t dead. “You knew it was poisoned,” she says. Did he drink it in order to save her from suspicion?

So calls the theory nonsense, claiming that he’s not the kind of man to drink poison for a girl. Aw, you big softie. She sees through the lie and tearfully asks why he would do such a thing—did he think her feelings would change? But in her mind, she thinks, “Who am I that you would put your life on the line for me? If you do this, it makes it harder for me to turn away from you.”

He gives her a small smile, admonishing her for always causing him problems. There’s so much left unsaid between them as they manage to make light of the situation despite the severity of it all, as he tells her that she’ll be freed soon. She just sighs, “I don’t know what to do with you.” So replies in kind. That’s oddly sweet.

Meanwhile, Wook tracks down the court lady who first conspired with Princess Yeonhwa, now receiving another package from her. The princess is in disguise, so Wook uses his metal hairpin to threaten the court lady into revealing the truth—if she does, he’ll let her live.

He asks the cloaked figure to reveal himself, only to be taken aback when it’s his sister. The court lady uses the opportunity to make an escape, with Wook too shell-shocked to stop her.

The princess, ever the arrogant one, knows that Wook can’t reveal her crime without damning his entire family as traitors. When he demands to know why she did it, she fires back that he was about to throw away his chance to be king for that girl, and she had to stop him.

When he retorts that he has no desire to be king, she challenges him to search his innermost thoughts. Didn’t he feel wronged when So performed the rain ritual? She knows he wants to be king, and if he still denies it, he can throw both her and their mother away.

Wook suddenly throws the hairpin he’d been holding, and it lands straight in the scheming court lady’s neck. She knows as well as he does that he can’t just cast his own family aside. “From this point on, Yeonhwa, you are no longer my sweet sister. You are a debtor. You to me, and I to you.” He seems resigned to his fate as he says this, and Yeonhwa accepts his offer, though she claims she’ll repay that debt by giving him the throne.

Defeated, Wook says that she can now do with him as she wishes. He has no choice but to submit to her control in order to save his family, even if it means giving up on Su.

He still goes to the prison that night, clutching the bloody hairpin he removed from the court lady’s neck. He drops it outside and turns to leave after one tortured look.

Now fourteenth prince Jung feels like he has to take it upon himself to try and save Su if no one else will, but Wook only acknowledges the presence hiding in the room: Chae-ryung. She falls to her knees as she tearfully begs Wook to save Su. He remains silent, though her pleading makes him visibly uncomfortable.

So goes to the king to ask for Su’s life, even daring to ask if the king is so willing to sacrifice her for the crown prince’s sake. King Taejo doesn’t see the big deal in sacrificing a lowly life in order to save an important one, which So takes particular offense to. Is this what being king means?

Taejo clocks him for his impudence, and warns his son that he’ll kill him if he asks about Su again. The same will happen to anyone else who thinks to plead for her life.

Court Lady Oh visits the prison that night wearing a veil, and tears up at the sight of a bloodied and broken Su lying on the ground. Resolved, she returns to the palace to find Wook waiting for her. He has one request for her: “Stand up for Hae Su. You are the only one who can change the king’s mind.”

When she says that she can’t make such a request, Wook asks if she’ll just let Su die. “I know you feel like a mother to her,” he says, adding that he realized that was the reason Court Lady Oh never liked seeing Su with him. Court Lady Oh turns that back on him, asking why he can’t save Su—doesn’t he love her?

She accurately guesses that it’s his own household holding him back, and his own ambition for the throne. “The reason why men in the royal family become cowards is always the same,” she notes with disdain. “Someday, you will come to regret your cowardly actions today. This one time you turned your back on her will haunt you for the rest of your days.”

With this said, she assents to go to the king herself, since she does care for Su and knows that Wook can’t save her.

After serving the king’s tea, Court Lady Oh waits until she is called upon to speak in order to say: “It was I who tried to poison the crown prince.” Oh no. Oh no! She goes on to give adequate reasons, like the loss of her child (which previous episodes hinted at being Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s doing), though King Taejo would rather pretend she said nothing.

She lays out the bloody clothes of an infant as she tells him that someone in the royal family sent her tea to drink while she was pregnant ten years ago. Seven days later, her baby died, his baby died, and she’s not about to let the same person who poisoned her get away with killing a girl who’s like a daughter to her.

King Taejo tells her that Su isn’t a replacement for her dead child, and that there’s no evidence against Queen Sinmyeongsunseong. “Will you look the other way this time as well?” Court Lady Oh asks him tearfully. “I will die soon,” she adds, putting a name to the illness that’s been plaguing her: cancer of the stomach.

She knows that King Taejo is acting to save the crown prince, but requests that he help her save Su, so that she won’t lose another child to the evil queen. His eyes wet with unshed tears, Taejo asks if this means she’s finally casting him aside, and a tear snakes down Court Lady Oh’s cheek in answer.

The next morning, So runs to the execution platform, where a bloody and bedraggled Su is being taken to the noose. Her eyes widen in fear as she wonders if this is the end for her, but she only begins to panic when she doesn’t see Wook.

As she looks around for him, it’s not Wook who arrives, but So. He fights his way through the guards, announcing to them that he’ll be taking her with him. He’s willing to spill blood their blood if he must.

But then, Astronomer Choi runs to the execution grounds with a royal command in his hand: There won’t be a hanging, as the real culprit has been discovered. Su promptly faints.

Court Lady Oh walks with dignity to the soldiers ready to take her away, taking one last look around the palace. Su witnesses her assenting to her own punishment and limps over to her, demanding to know what’s going on. “I put the poison in the crown prince’s tea,” the court lady replies.

Su knows she’s lying, but Court Lady Oh has to keep up the pretense in order to save her. So holds off the guards long enough for Su to drag Court Lady Oh into the secret tunnel beneath the baths, only to come up against the newly blocked exit.

Despair washes over Su as she takes this in, and she takes it upon herself to pull at the rocks blocking their exit. “You said we should go to your hometown,” she says, her voice distant. “Let’s go now.” Oof, this is hard to watch. Even Court Lady Oh sheds a tear as Su tries in vain to clear the way.

Court Lady Oh pulls her away, but Su cries—she knows that this is only a cover-up, and Oh will die in her place. She turns back to the exit, but Oh pulls the crying girl into an embrace. “It’s not your fault. I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing this for the king.”

She strokes the girl’s back as she says that she would die soon anyway, so there’s no need for Su to feel burdened. “I’m fine,” Court Lady Oh says through her tears. As she looks down at the scar on Su’s wrist, she mirrors what Su once said about having no regrets for protecting what she needed to protect.

Su sobs piteously as Court Lady Oh again takes her into her arms. She doesn’t say this aloud, but she repeats the advice she’s been giving to Su all this time, because she doesn’t want Su to end up like her.

We find Su in a fresh set of clothes as she limps her way to the king’s quarters. She kneels in front of the steps to make a formal protest for him to allow Court Lady Oh to live, despite her voice being too weak to carry far.

Wook tries to run to her aid only to be stopped by his mother, who refuses to let her son risk his life. Princess Yeonhwa reminds him that he turned his back on Su once, so why can’t he do it again? Wook sends his sister a look: “How much more indebted to me do you want to become?”

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong comes over to gloat and challenge Wook—if he doesn’t believe Court Lady Oh is the culprit, does he believe her to be guilty? His mother immediately prostrates herself at the evil queen’s feet, begging for her to leave her children alone.

Wook tries to pull his mother to her feet, but she brushes him off to continue her heartfelt plea. Queen Sinmyeongsunseong remains arrogant, admonishing Queen Sinjeong for raising her son poorly as said son remains powerless to defend his own mother.

Su’s pleas grow quieter as she grows weaker, even though she continues into the night. By now it’s just a whisper, and she has to struggle to keep from falling over. Baek-ah tries to tell her that her pleas are futile, and that despite everyone knowing that Court Lady Oh is innocent, no one would dare stand up to the king.

He reminds her that Court Lady Oh just barely managed to save her, and if she keeps being stubborn, Oh’s efforts will be for naught. “It is better than doing nothing,” Su replies, causing Baek-ah to give up on trying to stop her. But before he leaves, she asks where Wook is. Ouch.

The next morning, Queen Sinjeong asks the king to rescind the order for Court Lady Oh’s execution. He refuses, and when Astronomer Choi says that Su has been outside protesting for two days, King Taejo announces that if anyone takes her side, they’ll have to answer to him.

It begins to rain, and poor Jung has to be held back by his other brothers from going out to Su with an umbrella. Jung, finally having enough, leaves the safety of the eave to kneel in solidarity with Su. Baek-ah joins him, as does the crown prince (though he stands). Ninth prince Won refuses to have any part of it.

Wook finally approaches Su in the pouring rain, and this look of hope spreads across her features that’s just heartbreaking. But when he stops and begins to back away, realization seems to set in. As he turns away from her, Su can only ask, “Why?”

Just when it seems all hope is lost, a figure emerges next to her and spreads his cloak to cover her. It’s So, who says nothing as Su straightens just enough to remain under the meager protection.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong takes a moment to taunt Court Lady Oh, who’s on her way to the gallows. She says that Oh dying first means she’s lost, but Oh says the queen has never once beaten her. The evil queen makes sure to have the last word, as she says that Oh is nothing but a lowly court lady who no one will remember after her death.

“If one person remembers me,” Court Lady Oh thinks to herself, “that is enough for me.” In the king’s courtyard, the princes and Su hear the gong signifying the execution. What they don’t see is the support drop out from under Court Lady Oh’s feet as she strangles on the end of the noose before going still.

The king suddenly loses his footing, which is likely all the emotion we’ll see from him regarding her death. In the courtyard, So tries to comfort Su as she screams for Court Lady Oh.

“If I had known someone would die because of me, I would not have been so greedy to live again. If only this was a dream… if only I could wake up without remembering any of this,” we hear Su say in voiceover as she faints in So’s arms.

COMMENTS

I knew that the show would have to work hard to drive a believable rift between Wook and Su, but I was honestly surprised at how well they managed to pull that off this episode. Everything seemed dialed to eleven today, and to great effect—this is definitely the best effort we’ve seen from this show, and it’d be hard to pinpoint just one reason why. It’s one of those situations where everything finally just seemed to work, enough to where those little inconsistencies ceased to matter, and we could just focus on the emotional impact of what we were seeing.

Wook’s turn to the dark side was really unfortunate, if only because it wouldn’t have happened were it not for Princess Yeonhwa’s meddling and manipulation. I thought she’d resolved to become more than just the sister of a king, but now it seems like she’s thrown her entire weight behind the idea of making Wook king. And at the cost she’s made him pay, she better have been truthful about everything she said—it was her own ambition for power that caused her to implicate Su in the first place, and while her words to Wook about doing it all for him didn’t ring untrue, it made her seem much more selfless than she actually was. The “I did what I did for you” could’ve made sense had she not conspired with Queen Sinmyeongsunseong in the first place, especially knowing that the evil queen has always had it out for her family.

At least Yeonhwa seemed to realize her mistake when she saw her own mother prostrate herself in front of the queen, but by then, it was too little, too late. It helps to know that Wook disdains his sister for her actions even if he had no choice but to fall into her trap—which is why I can’t hate him for it. Yeonhwa really did make it so that he had to choose between his own family or Su, and for someone as upright as Wook, it would have been unreasonable to expect that he could throw the lives of his mother and sister away, even for the woman he loves.

I actually felt like the show handled his transition much better than expected, because it would’ve been too easy for him to just go wholesale bad. But he knew enough to feel guilty for his inaction, and tried his best to still be of some help to Su, even if it meant helping her from the shadows. Him walking toward her only to literally turn his back on her toward the end was a little heavy-handed, admittedly, but it was the kind of closure Su needed for the question that had been undoubtedly plaguing her throughout the episode’s events: Where was the savior she was promised?

The fact that her savior came in the form of Court Lady Oh was even more unexpected, but fitting. And when that thread really got going, it was absolutely heartbreaking. Court Lady Oh had been one of the deeper characters presented to us, and her constant watchfulness over Su had already clued us into the depth of feeling she had for the girl. We knew that she looked at Su as a younger version of herself, but the parallels between taking her on as a daughter to replace the child she’d lost—to the evil queen’s machinations, no less—were solid enough for her sacrifice to ring as both believable and extremely, extremely sad.

Her sacrifice didn’t come off as a deus ex machina to save Su from the gallows, but as more of a natural progression of their relationship, made easier to bear by Court Lady Oh’s terminal illness. I doubt that she needed Wook to ask her for her to have done what she did, and even if it was a teensy bit hard to buy that Su and her could just run off together, the moment they had in the cave was worth the suspension of disbelief required to get them there. Giving them that last chance to say their goodbyes was hard to watch, but along with making Court Lady Oh into one of the best characters ever, it went a long way toward endearing Su as a character. She still doesn’t have any agency, but at least she’s still willing to try despite being powerless.

While I did think it was a bit of a letdown to miss out on Su’s inner thoughts during her torture and even directly afterward, I guess we could say that she was counting on Wook to rescue her until the end, which is why she didn’t show fear until she realized that he wasn’t coming to save the day. Still, it was jarring to see how well she handled being cruelly tortured and imprisoned, but that’s neither here nor there anymore.

Despite whatever Wook was trying to do in the background, it was really So who emerged as Su’s defender, and that almost reckless abandon for his own status and future was what sold his love for Su to me. I’d been on the fence about their relationship before, which wasn’t helped by So’s emotional immaturity, but seeing him throw caution to the wind to save Su—or at least die trying—was powerful. It’s enough to make me think that even if Court Lady Oh hadn’t stepped in, So’s efforts might’ve just been enough to save Su. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking. I can’t tell if Su is just that lucky, or just that unlucky anymore.

Thanks for the recaps head. And i totally agree with all of comments above.
ep 11 was such a beautiful show!! I really LOVE this episode. Though there were so many sad scene especially Lady Oh's sacrifice. But, all scenes in this episode were perfect. Baek Ah --> show his sincerity and his loyal friend. Lady Oh --> i didnt expect she died very soon :'(

Wang Wook --> transformed being a bad guy. It was heartbreaking saw his turned back away Soo. But it meant Wook-Soo ship was sinking. Yeay! Finally it's time for So-Soo ship :D

Thanks for the recaps!

Sacrifice

Lady Oh, beautifully rendered moment with Taejo, I literally cried and when Taejo stated
'your finally throwing me away” I was like 'its about time” but really theirs was such a sad love story and exemplified the way Lady Oh loved him with her all, and he loved her with only parts of himself. I will miss this character the most, and I admire her the most. Now Taejo has lost a true love, but he protected his son's future as a King.

Hae Soo did a great job this episode, wrongfully imprisoned, tortured and yet she still cares about others, and that endears her to me, she is generally a selfless person, and her pleading for Lady Oh's life touched me.

Wook he has stayed true to character, his inaction never surprises me, I get he wants to protect his family that is commendable. Lady Oh told him he would regret his cowardice, and that it would haunt his conscience forever not standing up for Hae Soo.

Yeon Hwa, is very smart, and deserving of being the Queen she will become, I enjoyed her being played played by Honey Lee (Shine o go Crazy), and this actress is doing her justice.

Queen Yoo beautifully wicked, very well drawn out character, her motivations and mechanization are flawless.

Wang So such a great character he is so a man of his time and action. He will stand up for his loved ones, which is why this episode was pivotal He loves straight from the heart. He is willing to put his life and sword on the line for his “Person” loved he didn't turn in evil mom. Love how he loves his brother the CP, and his brother. Family is all we have that is eternal, and we protect them as best we can even evil mom.

When he visited his “Person” so much was unsaid, he did not say he would fight for her, but you knew he would. When he comes to her hanging and holds off the execution, I swooned. When he stood by her in the rain while his brothers knelt away from her__he stood by her, that was swoon worthy and why I support this pairing, not because of Hae Soo, but Wang So, he is so worthy to be loved, and too be the man she can lean on but who will also let her stand on her own.

I did disagree when some said that Wang So had less to loose than Wook, he could loose his freedom, and or his life by protecting Hae Soo, but he would and did put his life on the line for her, I will root for him because he is man that demonstrates by deed his heart, and not just words.

Yes. I disagree that So has less to lose than Wook. They both love Hae Soo in their own ways.

Wook is a gentleman with all the right attributes and makes promises to the moon and back. Non of the promises came through. And when Soo needed him, he turned up only to walk away. He should have stayed away. Soo was dispensable when he weighed all his options.

So, on the other hand, is the rebel with a cause. He doesn't make promises much but when he makes one - he follows through. He didn't let her go at any point in Soo's worst moments. He was willing to go to hell for her and with her. Soo is a part of him - indispensable and to be protected at all costs.

Hence, there lies the difference. Yes - So deserves Soo (whether she deserves him - that's another discussion). But his love for her is so deep and vast - it is enough for me to root for So-Soo couple.

Well said, funny how some seem to question if Had Soon is deserving of So. Yes, his love for her vast.

The best episode ever! This is a turning point of the story imo, what shaped the next episodes, clearing some issues on relationship backgrounds of the characters..really, each scene in this ep are so necessary. Good job to the writer and PD.

On thoughts of Wook, tho..I never liked him, he always play safe, rarely show emotions. One bounds to prepare for the worst with a character like that. I think Wang Yo, Yeonhwa and Lady Oh saw him for what he is. Wang Yo when Wook failed to hit the target in ep 10, Yeonhwa when she confronted him in this ep and Lady Oh when Wook asked her to help Soo.

As for Lady Oh, millions will remember you T_T

I'm curious and anxiously waiting for next eps *fingers crossed*

Wook plays it safe in so many ways, but most of all in love - he withheld it from his first wife and I actually thought it was creepy how he promised her at her grave to give Hae Soo the love he didn't give her and asked her to watch over them. But, in the end, he withholds it from Hae Soo, too.

He even withholds his true feelings from himself, but there was a glimpse when he shot the arrow at the taunt of prince eyeliner to think of the person he wanted to beat and hit a bull's eye. Yeah, he's in a tough spot with his mother and conniving sister versus Hae Soo, but life is all about choices, big and small. He made his and turned his back on Hae Soo, twice in a row.

Yes there is. I saw the picture on instagram. The story is different tho. A kind beanie explained to me.

" 94.1.1 Bwear September 27th, 2016 at 8:23 PM

In the original version, 8th and his allies (9th, 10th, 14th etc.) formed a conspiration to frame 4th Prince that he was spreading “false rumors” concerning the Crown Prince. 4th Prince closest brother, aka Ruoxi’s bestie 13th Prince took the blame for him and was exiled/imprisoned by the Emperor for 10+ years without anybody near him. So Ruoxi begged the Emperor to let Lu-wu (a gisaeng; 13th’s love) stay beside him in company. Emperor refused, so Ruoxi kneeled for two days in the rain to plead for 13th. Initially nobody wanted to get “directly” involved because that would make the Emperor suspicious. But of course 4th Prince couldn’t leave her like that, and pretty much the same happens as in the K-version. Except, in the original version, 4th Prince deliberately threw his umbrella away before walking towards her in the heavy rain, indicating that he was ready to suffer with her together and that she was not on her own. He then uses his cloak to shield the rain for her while he himself is draining in the rain. Afterwards, 8th Prince and 14th Prince came by to drop her some food (She already broke up with 8th way before in the original version. There is a two year gap between her relationship with 8th and her relationship with 4th.)

Then we also get to see a seperate scene of the other princes (3, 8, 9, 10, 14 etc.) kneel in the rain to beg for mercy and to plead for 13th outside the Emperor’s pavillion, which Ruoxi describes as “ironic” afterwards because they were the ones who planned this conspiracy in the first place, but were also the ones who kneeled in the rain one whole night for the sake of 13th."

Well said! I think the Kdrama version did a fab job on the rain scene, even though it wasn't 100% the same, the effect is there. LJK is too swoon worthy

the effect is different, the kvrsion showed romance but the cversion showing the heroine loyalty, her understanding on the 4th position and the 8th last chance for her,

if I may said, this version is a disappointment cause lack of context

Romance? Where?

Soo was kneeling for Lady Oh's freedom, it showed her loyalty and her love for Lady Oh who sacrificed herself for Soo.

I don't think this version lacks of content. It indeed holds so much more meaning. In Chinese version it's about her friendship with 13th prince. In Korean version it's about the sacrifice of her "mother". Friendship vs sacrifice, I'd definitely choose the latter.

0

I wouldn't say it was a disappointment, obviously 2 versions are different since the reason for why Soo/Ruoxi was kneeling in the rain were different. But the whole point is the Wang So/Yinzhen is willing to bear the burden with Soo/Ruoxi and give her support.

0

The C-version showed Ruoxi's loyalty to her friend, 13th prince.
The K-version showed Haesoo's loyalty & love for her mentor, Lady Oh.

So, yeah, the context may be different, but there is no lack of context.

And I don't know how this scene is relevant to 8th last chance for her considering they broke up 2 years earlier.

I have to respectfully disagree. The rain scene in the C-version is one of my favorite scenes of that drama. In fact, I was concerned how the K-version would handle it. I am so happy to say that I thought it was better than the C-version. This is one of the times, the direction, editing, acting, music, cinematography, and content were really on point.

0

@Dodgers

Omgosh, I thought the Kversion rain scene was better than the original too, especially when Soo sat herself up straight behind the cape, I died *_*

0

How is there lack of context? I actually like her kneeling for Lady Oh's life more than I like the context for C-version, just because we've seen a lot of interactions with the princes already, so I love that she has relationships worth fighting for and protecting outside of the princes.

0

I will call it a homeage than an adaption. And based on that explanation i think the Korean Version/Story is better (of that rain scene)..

Yep, a homage indeed although I think both are different takes. Chinese version seems more interesting to me since it's more political while Korean version is more heart wrenching.

Why the Korean version emphasized the women as one dimensional villain so much though?

One-dimensional villains? Ok sure that's an apt description for Queen Yoo, but I'll have to disagree for the rest of the female characters.

Yeon-hwa may be ruthless and ambitious, but it all comes from a very human desire to survive the cut-throat politics of the palace. The show has told us a few times how Queen Yoo gave her family much hardship when Yeon-hwa was a child. It makes perfect sense (to me, at least) that Yeon-hwa would hunger for power when she has personally experienced the consequences of living without it. So while I condemn her actions (poisoning the Crown Prince, making an innocent girl a scapegoat), I understand why she is the way she is and that makes her arguably complex. It helps that she's so intelligent, part of me can't help but admire her tactics, as terrible as they are.

As for Court Lady Oh, Lady Hae, Queen Sinjeong.... uh, villains, really?

the korean is definitely the bad one,
why? because in the chinese version, the heroine is the king's favorite servant and she asked in the belated of the 13th prince, to have someone take care of him,

then the rain scene showed so much loyalty between her and the 4th while in the kversion she became a pawn and damsel in distress while kneeling on rain will never affected anything, she even sacrifice a person for not knowing anything, she should saw her at the last moment and try to find information since she is nothing in the king's eyes, so her kneeling would impact nothing than a pity from viewer, she needs a better agency and the kversion always stripped that

Well, it may not be better than chinese version but it was NOT BAD.

I think you never watch the episode or never watch Korean historical drama at all. It's Goryeo politics. They know who did it. But they cannot incriminate them because it means losing an ally. But they have to sacrifice somebody because it's destabilization. And the King still has to show power.

Nah I even watched the seo dong, ballad of dessert about the 3 country Baekje, Silla and georyo, then the saeguk with Jung Kyung ho about the Goguryeo and Baekje, also silla era with seon deok ,

the politic here are "shallow", the ally and support are all talking when it's been known that su has a powerful background, where is at now when she is going to die?
when before it even reaches the height of marriage without ceremony for the king?
not important!
they knew who did it but they just keep silent?
then do something, talk with the lady oh to find something to helps
when did the kings established as ruthless with very few scene and weak attempt with the crown prince to save his life, he suddenly is ruthless?

the c-version did better at the revenge and being discreet,
even the prince in cversion is kneeling in line on from of the emperor and not silently kneeling on the side near the pavilion,
character being bad because they just have to and there line about the heroine as the angel will never be crossed,
if we stripped all the scene that come from the c-version, this version doesn't have his own footing beside the overdramatic not well told anymore wang so backstory and the makeup galore,
hae soo is nothing in the palace and the kneeling just serve nothing except the break up shipper, which again funny cause this makes the story force the ship for the poor hero,
the 2nd lead always get sidetracked and the 1st leas had to be jerk that change because of love,

sigh, just face it, the commenter here are just too afraid of criticism, even if it's true,

0

@dena, based on your comment it seems that you may not have watched or understand the drama carefully.

No, Haesoo does not have a powerful background anymore. She lost it when she refused to marry the king. If she still had a powerful background, she wouldn't have become a slave/servant.

Yes, they all knew that Queen Yoo was behind it, but all kept silent, this is power politics & dynamics at work. The more powerful princes, 4th, 8th & 9th, had their own vested interests to keep quiet.

Talk to Lady Oh to find what? The conspirators had planted all the evidence to frame Haesoo and the Crown Prince of trying to murder Prince So, i.e. the jewellery, poison etc. The only potential witness, the court lady, had already been murdered by Prince Wook.

When the king is established as ruthless? He's the famous Taejo, founder of the Goryeo dynasty, who fought more than 20 years of wars to build & unify his empire, this is history which happened before the show start and various conversations during the earlier episodes referred to this.

Surely, it doesn't matter where the princes are kneeling, in front, at the back or by the side? As long as they are there, it shows their support for Haesoo and Court Lady Oh. Why do they need to line up?

The rest of your comments is so messy that I have trouble trying to understand, but whatever, you are entitled to your opinion, as are the rest of us.

As for your comment that "the commenter here are just too afraid of criticism, even if it’s true", you are wrong, we welcome & value constructive criticisms with valid points, as we love to have meaningful conversations and discussions, whether about criticisms or praise. On the other hand, it is hard to have meaningful dialogue with nitpickers who writes wall of text of shallow & irrational complaints.

The circumstances leading to the rain scene may be different, but that doesn't mean that it is bad.

Both 13th prince and Lady Oh took the rap for a conspiracy against the Crown Prince, so there's some similarity. However, they were kneeling for different things, 13th prince to have companionship vs Lady Oh's life, so the K-version upped the stakes. If Ruoxi was kneeling to beg the king to spare 13th prince's life instead of giving him a companion, I doubt that the king would listen to her even though she may be the king's favorite. I think you are giving Ruoxi too much credit, no matter what, she is just a servant subject to the whims and fancy of the king, otherwise she won't get stuck as washerwoman for so many years.

What the rain scene showed was Ruoxi's loyalty to the 13th prince, not the 4th.

And I don't understand how she sacrificed a person for not knowing anything or what info you want her to find that will achieve anything?

Am I the only one finding similarities between Wook and House Stark (game of Thrones), Robb in particular? It's no secret that House Stark is an honourable house, bound by family and duty. Which in essence is who Wook is. Which is why it he couldn't give up his family for love (much unlike Robb). But hypothetically speaking, had he gone in to save Hae Soo, he would bring disgrace to his family and seeing that they were in the somewhat the same situation just a few years back. So idk, I don't really blame Wook for doing (or not doing) what he did. Him turning on his family to save Soo would've been totally ooc.

But on another note, why the fuck is YeonHwa so intent on getting Wook on the throne? He doesn't even seem to want it. Also was it just me or was there like um some kind of sexual tension between them. Probs just me tho, I'm delusional.

She'll only feel safe once their family is in power which she can get either by (1) putting her brother on the throne, or (2) marrying the Crown Prince/Future King.

I don't blame her. Her family went through hardships. They were banished from the palace, her mom is treated like sh*t by Queen SMSS, Wook had to murder someone at a young age, etc. Only marriage with Lady Hae saved them. Yeon-hwa probably doesn't want to be that powerless again.

As much as it saddens me that we had to lose Lady Oh, what Yeonhwa did was justified. It's hard to think of those dynamics now, but those were times that forced any decent individual to commit at least one wrongdoing in order for the family to survive. She has to either marry Yo or get Wook the throne, not an easy feat for any one.

Marrying Yo is not ideal because he's already married, so she won't be his first wife. She also doesn't like him. Her options are to marry So or put Wook on the throne.

What a heartbreaking episode. I cried so hard at the end. There is so much evidence they can find against Queen SMS if they ever do a good proper job, and most importantly, EVERYONE KNOWS about her malicious cruel things that she had done. Yet, she still is living with that royal life style and smirk on her face looking down on others, and the good ones are being either tortured or is in the mouth of death.

Court Lady Oh was one of my FAVOURITE characters in this show. She is elegant, smart, wise, and most of all caring and kind to the people around her. She really got her dead child back in the end as girl called Hae Soo. I loved their bonding. Bring so much warmth.

Its great to see how Wang So has changed so much from the beginning to now. Before he would go any length to gain what he wants, even at the cost of letting Soo being killed, which we have seen in during ep2, when she was being held as a hostage by the one of the bad guys appointed by Wang Yo, to attack the Crown Prince, and So told the guy to kill her even if he want Now you see the difference. He is now going on any length to SAVE HER from anything bad happening to her. He truly is a Hero.

As for Wook, i feel bad for him too, to choose between his family and his love. Yeon Hwa seriously is a witch. Power really makes a person go crazy and it divides people, relationships. It is a scary thing.

As for risking having Su killed back in episode 2, I think Wang So was only bluffing. He has look of concern in his eyes when the enemy's dagger/sword was slicing into Su's neck. Even in Ep1, he didn't let her fall down the creek though she was a stranger to him back then. He wasn't treating her as a fragile being but would be willing to save her if in danger.

This reminds me of how Su has trust issues with So. Had she trusted him back in the bamboo forest, they wouldnt lose the assasin. We can't blame her though since she didn't know him well enough to trust him.

Her visions of the future brought back that mistrust and she distanced herself from So. I hope all that happened in this episode earn So the trust of Hae Su. For So, action almost always speaks the truth instead of his words. Thus, Su must not be afraid of So's violent streak, trust in his inner goodness and open her heart to him.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

What you say is true, but it makes no sense for Soo (or any other human being) to stop trusting Wook simply because another guy in the royal family happened to be a coward. The king and Wook may be similar but are ultimately different individuals, it would be extremely illogical for Soo to predict Wook would make the exact some decisions his dad made, when the only common denominator between them (that she knows of) is they are 1) men, and 2) belong to the royal family. Until Wook betrayed her in some way or another (as he did in this ep), it would just be bad writing all around if Soo chose to run away with Lady Oh. Not to mention Soo was in a relatively happy and stable relationship with Wook, and last I recall we don't end relationships just cause people may have been in a similar situation and it didn't work out for them.

this episode. yes. finally perfect.

evil queen did manage to kill someone, even if not the CP or so or even soo. and she lord it over her rival queen. that look on wook and the princess' respective faces - YES!!!! lol.

also, wang so shines again, in a smaller-than-epic scene. it's all the little changes, all the little gestures - he DID sacrifice himself for soo and the CP. he DOES come to her rescue again when he's barely able to stand up. he admits who the poisoner is to wook, a rival in love (he might not be aware of that yet, he's not too bright where love is concerned), but wook is still a rival prince. he DOES come to beg the king and then to save soo even if it means defying the king's orders directly (i hope it doesn't turn southwards for him because of that. i guess now he's bound to go to shinju, despite having saved the CP). and then he comes to protect her when she's begging for lady oh's life.

soo can't help but compare - who was all talk and hot air and who put risked life and limb over her. and even if she could turn a blind eye to wook's dilly-dallying, she can't forgive he never even supported her in the hour of biggest need. if she forgives him that or excuses him, i'm gonna throw things. so better not do it, show!!!!

the king that everyone and soo seemed to respect is actually completely bound by protocols and the fear of the powerful clans. despite the CP being targeted, and so being actually poisoned, he doesn't go for the actual culprit but accepts a willing sacrifice from lady oh - what the heck?! doesn't he have a bone in his spine left? the only good thing is that something will happen to him next week, according to the preview. haha.

loved so, finally liked soo for a bit, and haha, wook went down. good riddance!!!!

For Me, The reason why Yeon Hwa pretended to drank that poison is Plausible Deniability. She made herself a victim when in fact she's one of the master mind of the plot. It was like " Will i drink it if i know there's a poison on it? ".

obviously she did cover-up pretending to drink poison. BUT in the previous ep she seemed to genuinely care so was drinking it in CP's place... and VERY quickly then planned and acted out an escape for herself.

she only seemed to be affected seriously when her mother kneeled to evil queen... and the she effectively blocked her brother from clearing soo, therefore sending lady oh to her death... she turns out to be a worthy heiress to evil queen's system of values. and i almost liked her when she seemed to be ready to jump to so's help :(

i can't see how he'll marry her after all in the future. but it does happen, therefore there have to be REASONS lol.

Just wow, Court Lady Oh laid it on thick to Prince Wook (royal princes are cowards all) and the King. Talk about the meaning of the buck stops here - she had a private court with the King like no other and got him to do what she wanted. Her death scene was a dramatic representation of the evils of power but wasn't it the king left him with the greatest loss? After bawling my eyes out at the moving mother/daughter embrace in the cave and Court Lady Oh's words, "It isn't your fault" and Hae Soo desperately pulling away the rocks and her horror of what was actually taking place, I had to cover my eyes at the gallows.

The rain scene - So and Soo, a romantic tragedy in black and white, so forceful, so what I've wanted, and such a turning point from "how are we going to get from Wook and Soo to So and Soo?" It happened.

I give IU high marks these last 2 eps especially.

I get what you mean. I hope that the rest of the series will bear more of a resemblance to this episode rather than the first half, but I don't know if a solid second half can make up for a patchy first half. Also, for me the poor characters and relationships development in the first half kind of taint what comes after since there is a certain amount of disconnect when watching the drama as a whole.

There are things that I do like about the drama so I'll keep watching. For future rewatch, maybe I'll just skip the first half and watch episode 10 onwards.

What a great episode!! This is the kind of court politics and drama that i wanted when i signed up for this show. Its halfway but now we are getting somewhere.

Wook greatly disappointed me in this episode. I understand his reasons,he had to protect his family who now is more politically weak than ever since his wife died but the worst part is that he didn't even try. I loved how Lady Oh called him out on it and also when she said that she would go to the King because she cared for Soo and not because he requested it. His love for Soo is true,no doubt about it but its also only upto a certain level and when its convenient.

People are reasoning that Wook had more to lose, but even if Su's family treats him like crap,he still seems to love them and he has the same to lose. And that scene when Su confided to Wook that Evil Queen was behind it,he must have realised that if she was caught,he along with his family would be put to death, and he even trusted Wook because he believed that he would truely do all he could to save Soo. Wook let everyone down including himself.

Lastly the rain scene,so beautifully shot. When Su held his cloak ove Soo, not gonna lie. I swooned. <3
I really liked how this show transitioned the change in dynamics and relationship between the characters. Till last episode i was wondering how the show was gonna sell us the main Soo-Sucouple when Soo-Wook are so adorable and in love but now like Soo i'm starting to look without my rose-tinted glasses and realize Prince Wook is not as perfect and dreamy as we thought.

Thanks, ViaKez...

"Will Be Back" goes a long way to redeeming some of the earlier musical missteps with the OST. Soprano Im Sun Hae's voice is simply breathtaking.

This version with the full-blown choral/piano intro is terrific. I'd love to know what the chorus is singing, particularly in the beginning. It kind of reminds me of Gregorian chant.

Found another version with less choral accompaniment. It is elegant in its comparatively spare simplicity.

"Will Be Back" brings to mind another gorgeously moving piece performed in Studio Ghibli's 25th anniversary concert at Budokan. Soloist Hayashi Masako sings "Mononoke Hime" ("Princess Mononoke") accompanied on piano by composer Joe Hisaishi, starting at 0:16:14. English lyrics. This one brings me to tears every time...

But I guess this is the typical of drama that I like.. where its stories relate to human's grievances, that most of things in this world isn't as lovely as it has been depict.

Although if they had given the role of Wook to anyone else but Kang Ha neul I would have been Wang So's "person" fully from the beginning. It's just that KHN is so damned gorgeous and charismatic it was hard not to like him too. They are two of the best leading men I've seen in kdrama in a couple of years. You just don't often get a "twofer". Despite the flaws in pacing and plot, despite IU and her spotty performance, these two have carried the show with their charisma and good looks. Where Lee Jun ki is almost breathtaking he's so femininely beautiful, Kang Ha neul is the polar opposite. He's gorgeous and manly looking. I've really enjoyed watching these two. What's coming up is going to break my heart.

Finally, we get to see more of the other characters beyond Su, So and get some nice characters and plot development. If only it hasn't taken half of the series to get here. Nevertheless, I hope this is how the rest of the drama will be. Spread the love out instead of relying on Lee Joon Gi to carry the show.

I'm not really invested in the romance(s) at this point and much more interested in watching the machinations for the throne. Throw some eyeliner on Kang Ha Neul and have him go head to head with Lee Joon Gi - that's definitely a show that I'm interested in. The combined pretty alone is worth the time.

Also, can someone tell me which is the correct spelling: Lee Jun Ki or Lee Joon Gi? I've seen both and would like to use the right one.

It was fantastic to see the "appearance" vs "reality" theme finally play out to its bitter conclusion in this stellar episode of non-stop heartbreak and betrayal. I thought the tea poisoning scene would be hard to top but this episode had so many amazing moments to bask in. The raincoat scene, hands down, has to be my favourite because it so clearly demonstrates why So, who is not the perfect choice, is the right one.

Sadly Su was long overdue for a wake up call and it was a pity that someone had to die in such a tragic fashion for her to finally snap out of her naivete and realise that her delusions that the palace was a sweet, fluffy place was self-destructive.

I don't have much sympathy for Uk. He made his choices with his eyes wide open, and walked into it. I didn't care for him making his approach towards Su in the courtyard and then turning his back on her as if he suddenly remembered that he couldn't be tainted by association. It was a truly symbolic moment that exemplified that Uk was first and foremost about Uk. Despite the charming personality and the sweet talk, when push came to shove he failed to deliver. Even in his marriage proposal wasn't much about Su but what she could do for his sad, sad burdensome life. And if he hadn't seen So as a real potential threat to his secretive comfortable courtship, I doubt he would have even made his move then.
The calculating choice that he made there and then wasn't a once off. It was the culmination of a pattern of behaviour of playing it safe, indecision and desiring respectability.

Props to the writer for patiently taking this relationship to its logical end, brutal as it was, demonstrating in no uncertain terms why this relationship looked good on the outside but was empty on the inside. If she hadn't done it the way she did (with such painstaking ferocity), then some viewers (not me though) would always be wondering if Su would have been better off with Uk when things get really rocky with So.

- Darth Wook-ie
- Darth Puppet Yo
- Sith Lord Queen Sinmyeongfeefifofum
- Sith Lord Yeon Hwa

- Lone Ranger Wang So
- Tonto Beak-Ah

Anyway... joke aside, I watched this drama without much expectations because I didn't really enjoy the C version. But I gotta admit that this is really growing on me.

WS was like a madman earlier on and his character development is incredible.

As for Darth Wook...damn.... I started out rooting for him actually. But the real breaker (at least for me) came when he told HS that if it rains the King will grant some wishes and that crap talk and I was like:

DUDE YOU ARE NOT EVEN THE ONE BRINGING THE RAIN DAMNIT STOP LYING TO HER!

And everything just went downhill from there.

But i shall admit, I'm invested in this drama not for the WS-HS relationship or the fights or what not... I just really really want to see what hell befalls Queen Feefifofum eventually.

I second you, I REALLY want to see what hell will be for evil queen. It also would be great to see evil queen VS Yeonhwa. Both are cunning, ambitious, ruthless and badass in evil way. They come at each other will be most interesting to watch.

This might seem like a stupid question, but why does So drinking the poison instead of the Crown Price save Hae Soo? She was sent to death because she poisoned So, but wouldn't she be sent to death as well because she poisoned the Crown Prince? I just don't understand why him drinking the poison has anything to do with Soo.

He wanted to save her by hiding the fact that there was poison in the tea. Not really sure about the how exactly, lol, because he was going to need antidote to survive anyway (unless he didn't think of surviving), but that's what he said to Wook. His thinking was he drank the poisoned tea, walked away, and maybe intended to hide. He specifically said that Yeon-hwa ruined his plan by fake drinking the tea and made it that so people discovered there's poison in it.

He did it once he saw Soo was the one serving CP the poisoned tea hoping to conceal the murder plot, save CP from drinking it and save Soo from being sent to death. His original intention was to tell on the queen's plan of murdering the CP.
If Yeonhwa didn't pretend to drink the poison, So might be able to conceal the whole ordeal but he most likely would die as no one rushing to help him. I have a mixed feeling about Yeonhwa's action because of this.

So meant to hide the fact that the tea was poisoned to avoid Soo getting accused, which is why he drank so much of it- he knew that he would survive. The plan went out the window when Yeon-hwa pretended to drink the tea exposing its contamination with poison.

From the number of comments on the thread it looks like the MLSHR beanies made it through this doozy (in the best way possible!) of an episode, which is great because now I finally have time to properly join in the discussion.

Holy hell, show. Have you been holding back all this time, because if so, you need to stop doing that pronto, and have all the remaining 9 episodes (-I can't even fathom there are only NINE left, tbh, what will I do with my life when this show is done) be just like this one. I don't care if you make me cry buckets like I did last night. It's worth it.

Like Heads said, everything just clicked in this episode and what was served up was a harrowing, heart wrenching hour that propelled the plot forward light years, created character development galore and also somehow managed to have bittersweet moments in the middle of the direst of situations. There was SO MUCH TO LOVE in this episode..I apologize for the novel length post that this will probably turn out to be. A few of my favorite parts..

-The culmination of the poison scene: when So collapsed and Soo finally turned and saw him there. Ugh, the way he was trying to keep her quiet and telling her to get away from him. I mean...YOU ARE POISONED AND ON THE BRINK OF DEATH WANG SO JUST LAY THERE AND LET HER GET HELP FOR YOU! I also loved how Baek-ah virtually sprinted to his hyung's side and how he was like a mother hen fretting at So's bedside because lord only knows Queen Seenmysanitylately would rather be dead than do that. The CP was also extremely sweet in that scene, recognizing that having So as his shield was constantly putting him in harm's way. I forgive you for being in a snit about So in the last episode Mu-ya!!

I think the fact that the general trained So to be resistant to poisoning is extremely telling btw. We're still not sure when exactly So was mentored by the General, but it seems to have been during his time in Shinju, and a well kept secret. During that time, he was given all the tools he would need to survive-training in the martial arts, skills to withstand poisoning, and who knows what else. It's as if they knew the scar would make life hard for him and gave him what he needed to bear it, and this is the kicker...prepared him to be King even though that probably wasn't their intention. It's another reason So is much more well suited to the crown than his brothers. In the palace, or out of it, he knows how to make it out of dangerous situations.

Also, can we have a round of applause for Yeon Hwa's machinations in the poison scene? Why so clever, mean princess? I was so reluctantly impressed at how slick she was with the dropping the poison down her sleeve and her A+ acting when she collapsed and then rose like the frickin' Devil's Bride when it was just her and the Doctor. Evil Queen saw right through her though but that's to be expected since they are cut from the same cloth. I'm pretty sure their alliance won't last long...

.. And yes YH rocks! If i was the king i would appoint her head of strategy and WS head of military ... ummm ... except those 2 might get together and off my head!

Baek is a total mother hen. I expected to hear him clucking in anger when WS would not sit still. He just wanted to feed his hyung!

Hahaha @bips99 sorry about that lol..novel length responses take time to write!!

YH and WS would totally be a team to be reckoned with, as much as I hate the idea because he and Su are my OTP in this show (even though the show has been so stingy with the fluffy feels for these two lately. HMPH. I would like some non-controversial interactions between the two so I can squee without questioning my modern sensibilities please!!!), so I can't wait to see what happens when they eventually decide that their goals are aligned. The show better not go with a girl-getting-the-guy-drunk-and-then-sleeping-together to force them into marruage plot though. Seriously, I WILL RIOT.

Baek is my bae. He is precious and should be protected and I need 20x more of him on my screen.

...especially since YH loves So. He's the only one outside of her family that she's ever shown an inkling of emotion for and once she finds out how much he loves Su, heads are definitely going to roll. I wonder how she's going to feel hen she realizes that in stopping Wook from marrying her, she's basically cleared the way for So and Soo to be together? Poetic justice at it's finest.

-The sibling confrontation scene: Ahhhh so much props to KHN and KH here. I flinched when Wook screamed as he demanded why YH would do this and could only shake my head as YH once again showed us why all her other siblings in the show's universe should thank their lucky stars she wasn't born a boy. I mean, even as a girl, she's pretty much capable of taking that damn throne herself. The way she showed how expertly she KNEW her brother's heart and thoughts and then used that against him with surgical precision...whew. I feel sad that their relationship as siblings is pretty much over now, but everyone was sacrificing something this episode, and the price YH had to pay was her big brother's love. Also, welcome to the party Dark Wook, nice to see you come out to play finally with your excellent and deadly throwing skills. While not on the level of So's Kill Bill spree at the temple, so far Wook and So are the only Princes who have been shown to make a kill onscreen..and coincidentally, it looks like it's the struggle between them for the throne that will take center stage.

-Soo and So's conversation through the prison bars: Ugh. I just wanted to reach into the screen and transport both my babies to some island where they could be happy and pampered. When So was poisoned, his vision blurred out and the last thing he saw was Su. When Su was waking up from torture, her vision was blurry and when it cleared the first thing she saw was So, and here is me, crying at the parallels. And then the resulting conversation where HS asked the irrelevant question of why he would go to such lengths of her, and So tried to be Mr. Cool guy about it...I know at this point Su isn't on the same page as So but she's certainly waking up to what it means when he says you are his person. Just try to turn away from him Soo-ya. Just try! I was laughing and crying but mostly crying at their conversation because *sob* I just want them to be happy and talking and having horseback rides all over Goryeo now, okay? GIVE MY OTP SOME HAPPY SCENES PLS THANK YOU BYE.

-Wook and So's conversation: Innnnteresting dynamics here. I know these two haven't really been the same since Wook censured So for interfering in his household's affairs, but when it comes to Su, they always seem to be able to come together as this time was no different. It made me wonder how So views Wook's relationship with Su..does he still see Wook acting from a position of Su's former caretaker? I don't think he suspects that it's Wook that Su loves..at the same time I wonder if Wook knows how So feels about Su too. He seemed surprised that So's motivation in drinking the poison was to save Su. Basically I just need these two to know that they are rivals not only for the throne but for Su too because the fall out from that is going to be glooorious.

-King Taeho + Mu scene: See, this is WHY having a favorite child, and not bothering to hide it, is no bueno. I've always felt bad for Mu because he's a decent guy all around and life as CP in Goryeo seems more like a punishment than a privilege. As much as I deplore Taejo's parenting skills, it was an interesting glimpse into the man versus the King here. Wang Geon is who he was before he became King and he would like the son he had before he was royalty to inherit everything. It's interesting because everyone seems to want to hold on to a simpler time, and this seems like the King's way of doing that...ensuring that everything he worked for will be passed on to the child who WASN'T born out of political need. It's almost like a subtle middle finger to the rest of the clans he now needs to appease and they seem to be aware of it. With that said, he's pretty terrible to all his other kids. I mean..So pretty much saved Mu's life..AGAIN and you're threatening to kill him? Is it any wonder that he's going to be spurred to take the throne once Mu is gone?

-Lady Oh and the King: Others have said it before, but LJK so often carries the show that it was refreshing to have others step in and share the load for once. Lady Oh killed it in all her scenes this episode, but I found her exchange with the King particularly poignant. The kicker had to be when she pulled out the bloodstained baby clothing, and at that point, even his majesty couldn't remain unmoved. While I wasn't immune to when he actually used her name! and asked if she was giving up on him now too, I couldn't help but yell at my screen because OF COURSE SHE IS DUDE what do you expect??

You ignored that fact that your wife poisoned your lover and killed your child AND you still had her serving you and your dozens of wives all this time. Yes, it was Lady Oh's choice to do that too, because love makes you do crazy things, but I'm glad that this time, she chose *herself* rather than Taejo. I like to think that even IF she wasn't about to die, she still would have made the sacrifice because she wasn't going to lose another precious person to Evil Queen.

-The rain scene: The crowning moment of this episode, imho..narrowly beating out the cave scene where Su frantically tries to get both her and Lady Oh away from the palace...if only because of some truly stunning cinematography. Sometimes imagery is all you need vs. long speeches and the scene where Wook walks away and Su straightens up under So's cloak was breathtaking. I mean you really can't get much clearer than that and I'm glad they kept it dialogue free because that would have lessened the impact I think.

That was really the pivotal moment for Su I think because even AFTER Wook failed to show up when she was literally minutes from death, she was still looking for him. When he showed up in the rain, the girl was still HAPPY to see him and I wanted to reach in again and shake her because um...how many more chances are you going to give this guy? But then he stopped and worse, he turned and walked away. And just like when she was about to die, guess who was there to pick up the pieces and who literally held her together as she fell apart? So.
I've said before in a previous recap that I hoped the show would show Hae So at her lowest points and have So be there for her, just like she was there when he was going crazy at the prayer stones, at the unmasking and after the failed rain ritual scenes..and thank you Drama Gods for hearing my prayers!!!

Dear IvoryLight,

I think you might be my spirit animal because I pretty much agree with everything you say. And I typically look forward to your comments after every episode. That is all....

@Ivory

I lub you. Not as much as i love LJK but close. Its like you got inside my head and pulled out my thoughts.

Like you I'm totally in awe of the amazball that YH is. In fact i think she is the one child that reflects perfectly the family-power-love conflict that any royal child has. And she oscillates between self preservation, looking for family, protecting the one she is in love with. All the princes tend to swing to the extremes.

I'm totally with you - she did that to save WS. Her love is not selfless or epic like WS's, or steadyfast like HS's but given her circumstances she does what she can. And a this point i would prefere to be loved by YH that wook.

As for the prison conversation .. lol ... these two are so married .. and they don't even know it.

Since you pointed it out i noticed on repeat viewing that this episode these 2 hardly talk. Yet the impact is so great. . She is not surprised when he swoops in gun (sword) blazing, or when he stands with her. She KNOWS he will come. And someone said- she does not even bother to defend herself to WS that she didn't poison him. Not even a token line. While she assures wook that it wasn't her. They are just so in tune with each other

I haven't given TAejo too much thought but i find myself agreeing with everything you said *nods furiously* ... I do wonder that when does taking 'hard decisions' as a king slowly morph into taking the easier path as long as the one paying the price with their life is someone else.

Lovely analysis ivory. \O^O/

Re: Mu & So, and So's training -

Even in the first episode, when Ji Mong asked the king to keep Wang So in Songak, Taejo was expressing his doubts, but it seems obvious (esp. after the conversation with the Grand General), that Taejo has always had special plans for Wang So.

This is purely conjecture, but with a scar like Wang So's, it would take him, initially, (without Hae Su's magical BB cream) out of the running for the throne, and therefore safe. Furthermore, since Wang So is sent to Shinji, it means he's away from all the Palace politics. Even in this episode, Taejo referred to Wang So as a well-forged sword. I think it was Taejo's plan all along to groom Wang So to support Mu's claim to the throne. Basically, Mu would get a loyal supporter, and So would get to stay in Songak. The king creates a "need" (the need to return home) for Wang So to control his loyalty.

But, I guess Taejo is going to be in for a big surprise when his overlooked 4th son will ascend.

This makes a lot of sense actually. It's too bad that Taejo won't be alive to see that happen, and his passing will shortly be followed by Mu's...

I have a feeling that once the King dies, the clans are going to get a hell of a lot more unruly and much of Mu's reign will be spent trying to survive and quell rebellions..and therefore So and Baek and whoever else of his brothers he is allied with will probably be out frequently in wars in his name.

I wish the show would give us a timeline of exactly how much time has passed though...

I agree on the point about So being Mu's shield.

It all goes back to that episode where So basically states that he will become not a Prince or brother but a loyal subject to the Crown Prince and King as long as he gets to stay in Songak. It's obvious that So will be supporting Mu's claim to the throne when Yo (and Wook, sadly?) stages a coupe to overthrow the Crown Prince after Taejo's death.

You can really feel the intense & overwhelming feeling on the rain scene with Hae Soo & Wook and especially the scene with Hae Soo and the 4th prince.
Even if I watched it 6 times, the feeling I felt after watching it several times felt the same, I still cried non- stop.?
It was so heartbreaking to watch Wook hesitating then finally turning his back on So. After all the pain that she endured, in the end, Wook finally made a choice to choose his ambition and family vs love.
I like the most is the scene of Hae Soo & the 4th prince, the way Wang So used his cloak to shield Hae So from the rain and stand still beside her.
For me, it signifies that Wang So wanted to shield Hae So from any harm. And he is determined to do it even if it kills him.
The other princes though kneel & stand in the rain to show their support, it was only Wang So who stood beside her bravely.
It is upfront show of disobedience to the king which may cause him to lose his life.
But he wasn't afraid.
You will only feel so much love & affection tru his eyes.
He doesn't have to say it, his eyes show it all.
That scene is awesomely beautiful.

Still in amazement at how seamlessly they pulled off the transition from Wook to So as Hae Soo's romantic interest despite Wook having the upper hand (as far as Soo is concerned) right up till the end of this episode. The story flow was so skilful I went from being a hardcore WookSoo shipper to mentally hurrying him out of the picture so we could leave Soo and So in the rain together.

I'm glad they ended that relationship with dignity. As cowardly as Wook might have been in his love towards Soo, at least he maintained some honour by clearly wanting to protect his family. And Soo has the fourth prince now, so no complaints there.

I'm—I mean, Hae Soo's ready for you, Wang So.

Re: the rain scene (I could seriously talk about this all day) - I love how the camera goes from close up, and then bit by bit zooms out, because of the effect:

You see Hae Su’s suffering, her weariness and the emptiness at being abandoned by Wook

You see Wang So softly and quietly wrap his cloak around her - BUT, like others say, she’s actually still partially exposed to the rain because….

Hae Su (whether it is romantic or not) accepts Wang So’s protection in that moment. But, she must consciously CHOOSE this. Here I see her express her agency, even at her weakest. And that’s what she does when she sits up straight. She returns to a strong (sitting) position, under Wang So’s care - but one that she chooses.

I love the look of defiance and determination on Wang So’s face as he shelters her

And then, I love the zoom out because it shows how small both of them are in comparison to the palace (and all it represents) so well

They are lovers, even star-crossed lovers, under the weight and invisible power of political and historical forces - so sweet, so fragile, so tragic - yet, so lovely.

This version has surprised me, in the original c-version Roxi is really close to the King and is even considered like a daughter at some point, but in this series its so different. In the last episode it almost makes me feel like maybe he feels actually threatened by Su. The preview shows the King sending her to be a laundry maiden, to keep her away from the Princes. At first I thought, if Lady Oh sacrificed herself and considered her Su a daughter the least the King can do is do something for Su, take her out of the palace, send her somewhere else if having her in the palace causes him concern, but from the start its been "well it's not her fault but turn her into a slave, or punish her severly, kill her etc.."....A King who only cares for one thing passing down everything to the CP and has forgotten about the importance of ruling as a father for all his subjects. It makes me think Monarchies really where not a good way to rule people and that's exactly probably why they don't exsist anymore. At this point the King seems genuinely concerned and baffled by Su who has become this presence in the Palace with strong ties.....

I definitely prefer the original Emperor, he really doted on Ruoxi and thought of her as his daughter. But SHR King feels kind of heartless if you will. It kind of sucks that in episode 12/13 Soo will be a musuri due to the "crime".

I kind of wished that they'd take the original route, her becoming a musuri b/c she rejected a marriage since she was in love with the 4th

Im so disappointed in wook. i was one of the few people who wanted him to end up with su, but right know i just can´t stand seeing him.I know that he wanted to protect his family, but part of me is wondering if there was a way to protect his family and su, as well. His lack of effort is what really bothers me.He gave up way too fast, while the other princes (who aren´t even in love with su!!!!) tried to help her.
Though I dislike work right now, I have to give props to KHN (LJK,too). Not just a pretty face, but great acting, too.

The final scenes of this episode shines light on how lonely the journey to being the King will be. Every power comes with a great sacrifice. For the King, it was the people around him, his lover and his child.

Such a heartbreaking episode.

YH reminds me of Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl. Always trying to get her damn way and pretend to be a innocent person. I don't feel bad for her and she and the 3rd prince are a perfect match made in hell.

Lady Oh was the real hero. And it sucks that HS lose another mother figure in her life.

The jail scene with HS and WS was perfect. Despite the fact she was badly torture, she was telling him to follow the doctor orders and to take it easy. They are a married couple.

When Wook turned away from HS it was really a slap in the face for her. She thought she could trust him and the one person who would never change but he did and now joined the dark side. He showed his true colors and there is no turning back. What a freaking coward.
