Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 19-25, 2016

KBS’s new sageuk Hwarang premiered in the slot left behind by The Man Living in Our House, and is already doing much better than its predecessor at 7.2%. It’s by no means a runaway hit, but being second to juggernaut Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim is no small feat, especially for a show we were all admittedly a little unsure about.

Over in the middle of the week, Legend of the Blue Sea continues to dominate at 17.3%, though it doesn’t seem like it’ll break the 20% mark anytime soon. That just means there’s more love to be shared between underdogs Oh My Geum-bi and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, with the former netting an impressive 7.0% this week.

The Lonely Shining Goblin continues to exceed ratings expectations over on tvN, and 12.3% is nothing to scoff at—the show’s performing extremely well. Solomon’s Perjury, which is quickly shaping up to be something special, stayed predictably on course for a JTBC show. And Entourage, poor Entourage, finally shuffled off this mortal coil at a miserable 0.7%. Better luck with the next adaptation.

Oh, and Happy Holidays and Merry Beansmas, everyone! (I know that’s not a thing, but it very well should be.)

As much as I would like to agree with you, and I mostly do, ratings unfortunately matter when it comes to future content that is produced. Whilst many K-dramas don't have the renewal woes as their Western counterparts do, showrunners and studios may be unwilling to support certain content, actors etc based on previous ratings and trends.

Yep, it's business as usual and it cost a lot of money to make a drama.
Bankable stars and writers who can bring in the ratings are the most sought after in dramaland.

Maybe int'l fans can pre-order the DVD/Bluray for KBJ? Or probably make some sort of support like Beautiful Mind's fans did..

Well, honestly as long as MBC don't cut the episode like some poorly-rated dramas, all is fine.

That'll be great though. And I hope they won't cut it because that's just terrible.

Required fields are marked *

I'm pretty sure they won't cut the drama. If you look at both dramas in the same time-slot, i.e. Oh My Geum-bi and Weightlifting Fairy, both have relatively lesser known casts. Clearly, both broadcast stations knew they were up against a strong competitor in Legend of the Blue Sea (which turned out to be not that great story-wise) and were resigned to losing the ratings battle already. What's the point of cutting the episodes? They are probably aiming to win in the next crop of dramas instead. If OMGB/WF does well, great. If not, they won't be too bothered about it.

The drama will go on as long as the network knows it will be marketable to other countries after airing. These days networks care a lot about selling their shows to China and Southeast Asian countries, even if they don't perform well domestically.

I just hope i-fans watch the drama on legal sites at least.
I feel so frustrated when I see i-fans shamelessly watch it on illegal sites and even share it on the forum without guilt and act as if they own the drama.

Unfortunately some international fans cannot afford to pay or even access the legal sites, including me, that's why we have no choice but to go to those illegal sites. It's sad but I don't have that extra few bills to pay or even donate.

Required fields are marked *

This! Not all countries have access to legal sites so as much as we want to support, we have no means. Thank drama gods though that there are sites like VIU (yeah for free membership!), iFlix, and Netflix who are slowly becoming a source for South East Asian countries for dramas

0

Required fields are marked *

I try to support the subscription sites as best I can through membership and participation, but it's definitely something that everyone can do. Thankfully, for me, the membership prices aren't too bad on their own at the moment but problems start when you combine them in addition to other subscriptions that I have already or may be interested in getting. It is not too surprising for annual membership/subscription fees alone to go above $100 a year (Netflix, Crunchyroll etc.). It could have been a bit easier if one subscription based drama site had all the shows for the season, but site exclusives, videos on sites you pay for but can't watch due to region coding, shows that aren't picked up by subscription based sites, and poor support for some dramas are but a few of the additional hurdles that Asian Drama Fans face. One of the best examples of the woes subscribers face with streaming platforms is Netflix. I remember when fans went ballistic with the price increase, many citing some of the aforementioned reasons.

Grilled chicken breast...lean and strong.

Sweet Onion Sauce...something sweet and something that makes you cry.

Baby Spinach...lotsa' iron and good for dieters.

Hmmm...what else?

I agree with the suggestion of someone here. we can tweet more about it.

It seems that tv ratings is not representative of how many people actually like and watch those dramas. Usually there's just one tv at home and the older folks get to decide which drama to watch. Since WFKB is a youth drama, young people either watch it online or in their phones.

I just checked Naver TV Cast and WFKB has nearly as much subscribers as Legend of the Sea, also WFKB is at the top 6 of "searched" drama in Naver.

I think it works the same as kpop groups, if you search WFKB in google/yahoo, tweet about it, tumblr/IG the producers will surely know that a lot of people outside korea like it too :)

Thanks to everyone's recommendations on the dramabeans site I went to watch Weightlifting Fairy and I'm officially hooked! Watched episodes 1 to 5, then 10 - 12 and it's the sweetest show I've ever watched with one of the most convincing, touching portrayal of a romance ever. Blogged about it too: https://kdramaanalysis.wordpress.com/2016/12/24/weightlifting-fairy-kim-bok-joo-eps-11-12/

I was really rooting for Entourage to be good but sadly it failed miserably. I wonder what will happen to the team behind the show (cause I'm sure the actors can bounce back from it).
I just hope tv stations don't get deterred by the recent responses to pre-produced drama's but instead focus on the story/script + directors more than anything else.

If it's aired during Friday and Saturday I think only weekend shows that get affected since no primetime drama in Big 3 aired on Fridays and Saturdays-Sundays reserved for weekend shows. Good to know that Solomon's Perjury avoid going head on with the big three drama awards and I'm worried for Goblin as it will go against them. Suddenly, I fell like I won't mind if someone decide to pre-empt Goblin for this coming Friday and Saturday.

Night Light shall improve their writing. The casts have potential but the problem is with writing. I only care about Yi Kyung at this moment and not slightly interest with other two main characters. I think even I liked Uee in Marriage Contract which changed my perception about her, but seems like the perception changed again in this drama. I don't like to see any of her parts. Jin Gu honestly I don't know what his purpose in this drama.

Well good luck show. I want to cheer for you. Please be better.

This show is still has half way to go since there will be 20 episodes altogether. I think it is better to finish at epi 16, if this drama is at KBS probably already has been cut to shorter episode (history proved it).

Uee honestly not entirely bad, she is just a victim of another poor script, same goes to Lee Yo Won and Jin Gu . If you have watched her in High Society, yes the character more or less similar, and her approach is quite similar. Just like I dislike her in HS, I also dislike her in in this drama.

This drama started interesting but somewhere the plot is slow paced and can cause people lost interest. If I can compare Empire of Gold still winning - plot, acting.

Agree with you. Ms Temper was a starter for jTBC drama doing well this year and was better in all aspect compared to Night Light. How I wish more people watch this drama, though. I know Lee Yo Won is not a favorite here due to mix reviews about her, nevertheless this drama is good written.

0

Required fields are marked *

I was hoping this was going to be better than "Empire of Gold," but the writing just fails... Not even Lee Yo Won can save this. I find myself rewatching "Empire of Gold." It's hard to beat what Lee Yo Won + Go Soo did with that show, not to mention the mesmerizing performance of Park Keun-Hyeong. "Empire of Gold" really stands up as a heir to "Sandglass."

(Side note, Uee's terrible jaw surgery is just too jarring. I just can't deal with her new look. She looks totally ALIEN. I just can't take her seriously anymore. I don't understand these celebrities that do this to themselves.)

------

I'm still tempted to put Ms. Temper as my #1 show in 2016, but there have been so many good shows this year.

My Top Five of 2016:

1. UF

2. Ms Temper

3. K2

4. Scarlet Heart (even with all it's problems)

5. W: Two Worlds

P.S.

I'm not too sure if "Goblin" would qualify since it will run into next year.

Empire of Gold is really a gold, and I cannot wait the next project from this writer next year. The Chaser and Punch were also my favourite.

I really don't dare to put any drama with Sandglass, this drama really classic and still a legend. But I can say EOG is one of my favourite, at least for these recent five years. A drama that I don't mind rewatching.
Not only Go Soo, Lee Yo Won had a stellar performance, all other characters are great.

Speaking of my top 5 drama of the year, Age of Youth and Ms Temper & Nam Jung Ki are in the top 2. The other three will be Signal, Beautiful Mind and Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. Sadly none of sageuk drama managed to catch my eyes this year except SFD ( it started 2015, not sure can count it or not) and Jackpot was the last sageuk i've finished this yeaR. Among your list, only Ms Temper & K2 included in my top 10 ?

I plan to marathon Weightlifting Fairy when it finishes its run. It seems to be a fun light drama.

In this age of cable dramas, especially tvn dramas, getting good single digit numbers and even some going beyond 10% (and could rival public stations), below 1% means something went wrong. Entourage had a really sad run. The slow demise has finally come to an end.

Really hope Weightlifting Fairy can fare better in ratings. I enjoy it so much. Really impressed by LSK and NJH's acting also. I'm always either giggling together with the cutes or bawling my eyes out (my heart just couldn't take it when LSK is crying 'abujiii' out loud) with the characters. Everyone NEEDS to watch it really.

But with that being said, I do enjoy Legend as well and understand the high ratings. While WF and Legend are competitors in the same timeslot, I keep feeling like Legend deserves to break 20% and WF deserves to be in the two-digit region. Alas, there's not really enough love to go around i guess.

I can't help but wonder if WLFKBJ would've been better off being on a cable channel like tvN. Yep, it kinda gives me Reply vibes. I still don't understand why the rating is so low. LOBS doesn't even break 20%, supposedly there should be more pie to share since DOTS was hitting more than 30% on its prime, right?

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Well, to be fair, when DOTS was hitting more than 30%, all it's competitors were struggling to hit even more than 4%. Considering that Oh My Geum Bi is doing well and averaging about 7%, so it's understandable why WLFKBJ would be lower. Also we must remember the targeted audience, since WLFKBJ is a youth drama, naturally more younger people would prefer to just stream it online in their own time, rather than catch it on live broadcast. At least the comments online have been overwhelmingly positive and I'm sure the cast and crew will know that (:

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

This. Ratings are good for calculating ad dollars owed to a show, but not for assessing a drama's true measure of popularity.

For instance if I were a live viewer: I'd register for watching Geum Bi. But that measurement doesn't capture that I'd also be streaming LOTBS afterward. It also wouldn't capture that I stream Bok-Ju after watching Goblin live. And this speaks about nothing more than a viewing preference: I'll watch something heavier or more thought provoking first and end with something light and fluffy. Because I don't want to go to bed sad or lost in thought about a drama. Each drama is essential and each has their place. And if there isn't a great crop of dramas available like we've had this year, I'll watch something old that I haven't seen because they couldn't fill the right spot when they were airing.

[With the exception of Goblin, I think those shows air opposite of each other. I've looked online but can't find the whole TV lineup. That'd be helpful to know.]

Yeap! Ratings aren't exactly everything, nor an accurate reflection of how good a drama is. Take You're Beautiful for example, it averaged like 10% in ratings, which was pretty low back in 2009, but is considered to be one of the most iconic kdramas ever, and shot all three of their leads (Park Shin Hye, Jang Geun Suk and Jung Yong Hwa) to ultimate hallyu stardom. Also it gained a cult following, and the drama was then subsequently remade by the Japanese and the Taiwanese. A popularity that the ratings never reflected.

However, I'm not saying that WLFKBJ might ever achieve this level of popularity, because this was truly a rare instance, and in fact MLSHR's international popularity and cult following mirrors that of YAB more, but at least the drama is well received and will always be a well loved one amongst the kdrama-loving community.

sweet but not that I would watch till the end kind of story,
probably just the 1st and the end,
I don't want to demeaning it but it wasn't as amazing as people like to rave here,
it's an underdog story with a likeable protagonist,
nothing to hate actually but not a great one either,
if you go with the review, just take it as usual story cause I am leaving it,
it's enough, they gonna be fine,
tried so hard but I can't see how it above others,
I think it because the drama watchers here have a high standars but when a drama doesn't have any fault they rave to high heaven like it's the best ever happen or like to hype the underdog cause it's cool,
as I've seen in Moon lovers and how they downplay popular drama,

Other than the main lead guy who surprises me with his improvement, the main lead girl overacts. A LOT. Maybe because I binged the fist 8 episodes but her pouting, ugly(?) face she tried to make to combat a clearly pretty face got repetitive and got on my nerves. I liked Age of Youth much better for the same feel/genre.

I personally don't think Bok Joo is all that great, not that the PD and the team expected that drama to get the high rating, imo. The perfomance of the casts are not something very great too.

What made this drama is a gem because it is youthful drama, cute & sweet romance, no bad characters - a drama that I will call my weekly vitamin. Just like Shopping King. In the middle of tiredness and hectic week, everyone of us need vitamin to energize ourselves. So Bok Joo is good drama to boost our mood, and to see our life from positive side.

Not all drama is up for competition of the best drama , best writing, or best acting. And not everyone of us looking for best drama at all times. Sometimes a simple drama like this is what we need. That's my take on this drama.

I agree with you. I dropped Louis and Bok-Ju by the 2nd episode. Both of the shows re-caps received good no. of comments and even What-You-Watch and in ratings posts most comments are about Bok-Ju.

Fact is Our little, Cute,Young Fair Lady Geum-Bi has beaten Bok-Ju every week and the only show that gave Legends some competition. We hardly see any comments for Geum-Bi. It is not even Recapped.

All the animated happenings and so the characters. Its your average youth drama trying to pander to the needs of the audience at whim.

I'll just say, bok-ju gets better with each episode....I think it was around ep 4-5 that I really was locked in. On the contrary....I did not like Shopping King...thought it was boring ...so not really the same

It's difficult to judge a drama off two episodes alone, which is why it is usually better to watch about 4 episode. If you saw with the recaps of WFKBJ, it wasn't until recently more comments started being posted about it. I know because I followed all the recaps. The show is so good to many people because it is relatable, but it wasn't like that when it started. I don't even watch youth dramas like that, but it's better to judge a drama after you've finished it, but that's just me

it's the marathon effect, because you get the answer real fast and the correlation makes like fast since you have other ep on store,
if the drama get big after 10-12 episode it because people are not waiting it on weekly but binge watching until it's good and reach the point in my observation,
but then people also have to remember this effect for the popular drama before making a judgment,
if you marathon any popular drama that get trashed for being boring after 2 episode and immense comment in the earlier episode than the recent episode,
the chances are you gonna find it more likeable because you can easily solve what bother you faster than usual,

I follow the 20-25% view rule But couldn't this time. I have seen weekly youtube short scenes posted by official channel. Every kind of shows have their own set of relatable events/happenings and that doesn't make them good.

In the end it is all about entertainment and the show has succeeded in it. It deserves credit there.

Watching short scenes would really not do any justice to a slice of life kinda drama, as mostly the fluff aspect is highlighted in that. But I do understand if you feel that the show is not your cup of tea. I love the Show completely and place in one of my all time faves, hence I sing praises of it in the DB thread of the drama. I also ritually follow LOTBS and Goblin and comment on those threads too.
I do agree that the Show has earned enormous love in DB, but i think its purely because the show has crept up and captured our hearts. Personally I feel if anyone gave it a chance they can't help but fall in love with it. But your disillusionment is completely understandable too as i have felt the same for many other dramas eg. MLFAS, BOF, etc. Still can't understand the love showered on them.
Yes it is a run of the mill youth drama, but it is the the best in the genre (personal opinion ofcourse)

In a sense, I judge every drama I watch, whether it's one episode or the full run that I have completed. But I try as far as possible not to write my judgement on a drama which I barely watched on Dramabeans. I do however express my opinions which are rants , dissatisfaction and disappointment.

The show which I ranted on the most this year was Moon Lovers. That's because I actually watched it almost all the way to the end.

As someone who love Weightlifting Fairy, I can understand that some people wouldn't like it. How is it possible that everyone likes a show? Neither must everyone love the show.

I guess for those who don't get how wonderful the drama is, it must be puzzling or feel put off by how fans go on and on about the awesomeness.

Actually the people I want to give a shout out to are fans of LOTBS. In their enthusiasm, some fans of WFKBJ have expressed their overwhelming love of the show over LOTBS. I guess being the runaway winner always make you a target for comparison, usually not favorable. However, I don't see or notice fans of LOTBS responding to these comments. You can say that there is no need to being the indisputable winner however the natural response is to defend. So kudos to them :D

I don't understand people's need to put down something in order to praise another. Can't you just accept that different people have different preferences. Also if you've only watched 2 episodes, you really have no right to overgeneralise it as "your average youth drama trying to pander to the needs of the audience at a whim". This coming from someone that dropped SKL and never watches "your average youth drama".

Yay for My Geum-Bi . Heo Jung-Eun is doing a wonderful job as Geum-Bi. Hope she gets some sort of recognition for it. The story is holding up well too. A susrprise hit, for me anyways.

I suppose a lot of comments here from WF fans are because of the swoony love story that's why some brushed it off as 'your average youth drama'. Sure, the love story is great, I'm more invested in wf otp romance more than lobs and goblin combined since I wasn't sold on the romance in those two.

But for me the real gems are the little things that are far from grand but tug my heart without being cheap or artificial. I love how amazing the father daughter relationship is, I love seeing the young atheletes struggle since being an athelete is never a stable job (just like in entertainer world) and wonder if the road they took was worth it, I love seeing BH anf JH relationship grew without any over the top scenes but in simple things we tend to miss.

TL:DR WF is an amazing show and deserve every praises spoken. It might not have gratuitous scenes overdosed by a bunch of PPLs but the show does offer a simple story with a big heart. and sometimes that's the emotional payoff I look for from watching dramas.

I agree. Someone above says it's being underrated but I think it's overrated. I watched the first 6 episodes and I simply do not have the same enthusiasm about the show. It's fine but I don't have the urge to keep up with it.

Thought Weightlfting fairy's might improve alittle this week but instead it went down. Not sure why its not resonating with local viewers. I find the otp refreshingly direct and love their open comunication and thusfar it has also sidestep usual cliches.
My focus is so thorough on it. I cant watch other drams. M replaying ep 1 to 12 until wednesday comes again.
Had just made my 3rd fmv https://youtu.be/QLCHcHKLEXU too
Hope the production team and cast knows its a great drama n lots of international fans
Anyway happy and very Merry Christmas to all beanies.

What makes a drama a hit in terms of ratings? It's a myriad of factors but I'd like to hear others' ranking in order of importance.

- Star power
- Writer and/or PD's fame/track record/following
- Genre
- Story
- Directing
- Production
- Acting

To me, I would rank it something like this
1) Star power - 50%
2) Genre - 5%
3) Story - 20%
4) Directing & Production- 15%
6) Acting - 10%

I will qualify the above - sometimes, a story is unexpectedly a hit with Korean viewers, is so engaging and good that it keeps attracting viewers after the premiere. In that case, star power is not material or play a less significant role. Examples are Signal, Another Oh Hae Young, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds and current Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim.

To me, Star Power are those actors which can bring in more than 10% in the 1st episode. Usually, it's nearer 15% than 10%. Examples are Dots, Doctors and LOTBS.

Of course, it doesn't make absolute sense to fix percentages to these factors or exclude other factors. I'm just trying to make some sense out of this thing called ratings.

I see what you are saying and generally agree though my understanding Moonlight's lead couple are super popular in Korea even before this drama (though it's at another level now) and had quite a bit to do with it being a hit. The fact that it made the ratings it made going up against the last episodes of Doctors was a sign of what was to come. I would say genre matters a bit more as certain genres tend not to resonate no matter how good the story is. With "star power", I would include the writer in that because some are known hit makers over and over again.

And then something will out of the blue be a dud (even if it is good ) or be hugely successful (and be horrible imo) and I just give up trying to understand it. It's hard to get the mood of another country. But, yes, star power means a lot more in Korea than it does in the US.

Actually I was surprised at MDBC's first week ratings. I figured that Park Bo Gum and Kim Yoo Jung must be more popular than I thought. Of course now they are even more popular. On the other hand, I was taken aback by Moon Lover's premiere. I expected that more viewers would tune in for Lee Jun Ki. Then I checked and it was similar to his previous project SWWTN and Joseon Gunman. I figure that he's more popular overseas than in Korea.

Regarding genres, what do you think are the genres which will not work well? I think youth dramas rank low and Koreans seem to love medical dramas, makjang and romance.

I don't care about Star Power but it does mean a lot in Korea. To me, a drama must be foremost interesting and entertaining. As for actors, I go for acting skills more than looks. So I really don't get all these talk about "visuals" and stuff.

as I remember, MDBC 1st week is like 8+% and Moon Lovers 1st week also around 7-9 %
it means people give both a chance,
the reason why people saw MDBC is because Reply 1988 hits so more people willing to try
and imo the reason why Moon Lovers is not over 10% is because he seems to be always on saeguk and people just want to see the reaction 1st,

Idk if many people do this but sometimes people just don't want to start a new drama and wait for the review from the 1st week or rewatching it on the internet, so they can feel right to switch the drama,

Then 1N2D happen for Park Bo Gum and the word spread,
but for moon lovers, their 1st week is not good because the drama itself that executed badly so it also spread,

I was paying a bit of attention to this situation because I was a fan of Beautiful Mind. It is my thought that BM was cut short so that Moonlight could get out of the gate and get some buzz. There is no other reason why the station would start a drama head to head with the final episodes of a hit drama. Good for them. They trusted their drama and it worked.

ML lost almost half the audience of Doctors to Moonlight meaning that audience never even watched the first episode but went immediately to MDBC (in it's 2nd week) because of the buzz and then they were on their way. ML knew they had a problem, hence announcing the airing of 3 episodes. They did do I guess ok the first week but the piling on began and the rest is history.

In this case, I think the star power and a sweet story overcame the iffy ratings that can come with a youth historicals. So I think you are right, star power trumps almost anything but isn't a sure deal. I also think you are right on genres. The main thing is romance, romance, romance....yet we can get a Signal or a Misaeng here and there and it is so refreshing.

Kim Sabu and Kim Bok Joo kwaiting !! I watch the former for the intense hospital politics and humanity and romance, and the latter for warm fuzzy destress feels !! I agree with some of the comments that the latter's plot is just youth n nothing really much but I love the cute heartwarming moments (it is good for our overly stressful lives) !!

As for Goblin, I'm still not so excited over it than the 1st 2 shows I've mentioned, I'm still sitting on the fence waiting patiently to see more mystery being unfold (i.e. the past lives and such)....

b>Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu - We Married as a Job Broke all records. Made news ones. Superhit. Best Romantic drama i have seen in a while. Amazing Manga-to-Live Adaptation.

Hapi Marriage - Happy Marriage - Sigh . Sigh . These people need to take few classes from the Author,Director and scriptwriter of NigeHaji.

Our Fair Lady Geum-Bi - Fighting. Better than its own 2 competitors.

Goblin - Wastes too much time. Watching it for Mr. Kim. Sunny needs more screentime.

Night Light - Problem is the story itself. Slow, Nonsensical talk and illogical moves which can be caught by anyone.

Romantic Teacher - More nonsense and drama and illogical dialogues. I just don't understand where this romance comes from.

Legends - Try to be funny and cute but District Official's story is still better than the present story.

Blow Breeze - Who is watching it? I am keeping an eye on it but never got the time to watch it. No one even talks about it.

Father I'll Take Care of You - Weekend shows rating is almost same week after week and i don't think this one can take on Gap-Soon at all.

Still enjoying Father quite much.

I've partially watched Blow Breeze (also by the name of Windy Mi-Poong), and the OTP fits each other really well. They're super cute together and I wish they'd just leave them be: it's fun enough just watching them.
Sadly, though, it is a makjang in the end, so there's a lot of in-law/relationship secret/unfairness that goes on, and I usually skip to the OTP parts. I'd say give it a go though, because Son Ho joon is SO GOOD IN THIS and Im Jiyeon matches him so well <3

I'm content with Hwarang's current ratings. Not that bad at all. I hope the drama reels in more viewers after the second episode because it was better than the first one.

Too bad about Entourage. I'm super behind on it, only because I was short on time and distracted with other dramas. I still wanna finish it to see how it goes.

I'm curious where Entourage went wrong. I never watched the US version of either The Good Wife or Entourage but found the k-drama adaptation of The Good Wife to be excellent. I am interested if anyone who is a fan of the original Entourage can indicate why it went wrong or if it was true to the source material and that just doesn't adapt well to k-drama?

Well, I didn't watch Entourage (US) much but what I saw I liked, it had a laid back atmosphere, it's difficult to describe...like you are eaves dropping on a group of friends that sat at the table next to yours and their gossip intriuges you. Also just the atmosphere of LA is ...different. It just worked imo, Entourage (SK version) didn't for me. In a show like that you have to find the characters interesting, there is no real story to speak of so the whole show is just carried by the characters and for me, I just didn't really find them interesting so it was okay as long as I watched it but I didn't really have any desire to click on the new episode the next week. The Good wife had some more story material and the sympathies of most people for the wife that got cheated on. Procedurals are something that the US are good at as well, so it was an easier thing to adapt than Entourage where they just tried to copy the atmosphere disregarding the actual feel of the south korean movie industry. It felt fake to me, of course Entourage is no reality tv show but it had this certain flair and they just couldn't capture that.

I seem to always prefer the less popular shows. I don't know why. I like WF slightly more than LotBS but the difference in their ratings is huge. Hwarang has started off really well for me but its ratings are fairly low. Goblin - I'm still watching but the romance just isn't working for me, and it is kind of choppy, but has great ratings. DotS, Oh My Venus, Doctors, MLFAS, W all pulled in great ratings but I dropped after five or six episodes because they didn't hold my interest. I dunno - am I missing something? My fave of all kdramas, Healer, barely made it past 10% on its best night. So I think I must be an outlier fan of kdramas, not in the normal range.

Oh My Venus actually didn't fare better than Healer I don't think. I remember being a bit surprised because of it having So Ji Sub. I've given up trying to align my tastes with the Korean market. It does seem a lot of hit dramas have big name stars so maybe that is the key though certainly not always a sure thing. When I look back over 2016, I realize how some of my favorite dramas were small ones that didn't make a huge splash.

sometimes I think it because of subtitle and culture,
not a lot of people who enjoy drama commenting but they do turn up in the rating,
that's how a certain get accepted in the society and as a subtitle watchers,
I think I overlook a lot of things that make other people loose interest,

marathon, which is what the rating people rarely do,

the talks,
here on drama site we talks but then in real life, they also talk, they just don't always leave comment on drama site,
and those silent viewer resonate to the drama a lot too, they just make the rating as their record,

Honestly I am the one that can't understand the hype of healer and I thought it more because the commenter community and not because of the drama itself,
and then if you turn this into a real life conversation, you'll understand how the other drama makes their rating,

I wasn't reading comments when I watched Healer. I had a hard time getting into it, in fact - think I kind of pushed through until the 4th episode and then it started getting good. I didn't start reading comments until Cheese in the Trap and I kind of wish I hadn't read them. Cheese was a breath of fresh air for me in dramaland, and though I was seriously let down by them going off-topic towards the end, it was still one of my faves of 2016. I had to constantly remind myself how good it really was when I read, and wrote, critical comments!

But it's totally cool you didn't like Healer. For me, though, liking it had nothing to do with the commenting community because I wasn't reading any forums then.
