Strong Woman Do Bong-soon’s unexpected loveline

The more character info that gets released about this show, the funnier it gets. It looks like the love triangle in JTBC’s upcoming rom-com Strong Woman Do Bong-soon will go three ways, and not two: Park Bo-young (Oh My Ghostess) will have a crush on Ji-soo (Fantastic) and a loveline with Park Hyung-shik (Hwarang)—this much, we knew. But apparently Park Hyung-shik will confuse them all by sending flirty mixed signals to both Park Bo-young AND Ji-soo, making each of them think he’s in love with them. HA.

The newly released stills and character descriptions provide a little more information on our three quirky characters, along with some unexpected twists in their romance. Park Bo-young headlines as Do Bong-soon, of the Dobong neighborhood in the Dobong district, a young woman born with with Herculean strength who tries to use her powers for good. She’s unemployed and nursing a crush on childhood friend Ji-soo, and she’ll get a job as Park Hyung-shik’s bodyguard. Her character introduction calls her “irreplaceable, unrivaled in charm, fatally lovely, immensely strong girl at the highest level [as in a video game].”

Park Hyung-shik plays an oddball chaebol heir and CEO of a gaming company, who appears like a playboy because of his wily charm. His character is the frequent subject of rumors and tabloid articles, and one very persistent rumor is that he’s gay. Because of constant jealous rivalry among the step-siblings in his family, he’s hiding a lot of inner pain underneath his cheeky demeanor. He’s described as a skeptic who doesn’t play by the rules and just lives his life like it’s a game; but when the unusually strong heroine becomes his personal bodyguard, he’ll start to grow as a person.

Ji-soo’s character is an idealistic rookie cop who’s all about justice and the law, described as an energetic tsundere type who’s got boundless energy and only knows how to barrel forward. His character introduction calls him “explosion of handsomeness, eye-catching, fatally beautiful in uniform, energetic tsundere.” The heroine has a one-sided crush on him, and though he already has a willowy girlfriend (boo), he’ll be a dependable friend who protects Bong-soon.

The two boys and Bong-soon get caught up in a serial murder case that breaks in their neighborhood, and end up reluctantly living together for security purposes. Pfffft, I love it already. Once they’re living under the same roof, Park Hyung-shik’s flirting will give Ji-soo the wrong idea, leading to “a bromance we’ve never seen in dramas before.” Oh really. Hmmmm, I’m not sure I believe you, but you know I’ll be tuning in to find out!

Friday-Saturday drama Strong Woman Do Bong-soon premieres February 24.

"who's playing Ji Soo's 'willowy girlfriend"

PRIORITIES MAN! That's the part that caught my eye( after the more than AMAZING cohabitation, that is).

I was wondering where that 'grrrrrrrr' sound was coming from, it took me a moment to realize that the growling was coming from me when I read about Ji Soo's 'willowy' girlfriend.

Everyone complains that Jisoo never gets the girl in his dramas but finally a drama gives him a girlfriend and the immediate reaction from everyone is booo and grrr. Make up your mind people haha Either he gets the girl or he doesn't. I'd rather he starts the drama with a great girl instead of the the drama trope of a random romance thrown in at the end as a consolation prize. I just hope she's a genuinely nice girl and not a jealous harpy. I could see her being a little uncomfortable with them all living together if Bo youngs character is super obvious with her crush. But honestly I'd be happy with the fem-romance(?) haha between the girls. It would allow her to get over her one sided romance as well as getting a close friend.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm definitely more interested in her character type than I am in the fact that Ji Soo gets the girl. I just want a nice, confident second lead with a possibility of a fem-romance (I'm stealing your term - I have no idea what to call it). As far as Ji Soo, apart from his hilarious cameo in WLFKBJ, I've never seen a drama of his. So I'm looking forward to finding out why fans love him so much, but I'm not concerned with him ending up with the girl. I save those sentiments for PHS!

0

But......*breaks into melodramatic piano ballad*

That should be meeeeeeeee!!!!

On a serious note, I hate to be pessimistic but the 'willowy' in her description is not giving me any hope for proper character development, probably would be that romcom Girlfriend/Boyfriend used to show us how the lead is so much better than the one she's/he's with.

But, I just remembered who the Director was also directed Ms.Temper and I think I'll love everyone even the villains or at least, have a hooty time cursing them! Win!

0

Hana, I think you just coined the word we've been looking for to describe female friendships!

Fem-romance is great, but how about femance (fem-mance) so it rolls off the tongue easier?

Hmmm...having mixed feelings about this new information. I hope the show is not trying to be too ambitious to be original and bring us "something we've never seen before "... like they are setting themselves up to possibly fail... while I like freshness, sometimes it's just overdone and makes the whole story/drama just too much. Some simplicity is good too.
Having said that, with such a good cast (I'm looking at you Park Hyunsik!) I am hoping they will be able to pull it off. But also, Hyunsik has been so successful at every character he's taken on...please let this not be the one to break his perfect score! I am so happy and looking forward to this show...but also a bit worried. But no matter what, I'll stand by you show!

If it's any consolation, JTBC dramas (the network that will air the show) are usually not over the top and pretty well thought out, staying away from most kdrama clichés or at least approach it from a different POV. I think some beanies can attest to the quality of their shows, you can check out some of my personal favorites from last year such as Age of Youth and My Wife is Having an Affair this Week to get a feel of the shows that they produce.

I'm pretty excited myself, I love Park Bo Young and looking forward to the Park Hyun shik/Ji-soo bromance already but have to tamper my expectations for a bit so I don't get overhyped!

O.M.G. This is the drama I am most waiting for. HURRY and come! Gender reversal rolls? PBY, PHS AND Ji Soo? Possible gay hijinks? It's almost like my dreams created this drama. This isn't a dream right?

On another note, I don't think I could contain my joy if they actually did a romcom kdrama about a gay couple. The likelihood of that happening is probably a very long ways off but a girl can hope.

0

I'm not sure. It would be awesome if he is bisexual but I really doubt he will be. I am guessing his sexuality will be strictly for laughs. I am hoping I will be proven wrong though!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

It would be great if Park Hyung-shik's character turns out to be bisexual and intentionally plays up his queer side to ruffle everyone/his family's feathers. But I bet he's actually going to be straight as an arrow with the show playing up some gay-baiting hijinks for the lulz. ? Despite this one drawback, I do like Park Bo-young and the story's cohabitation set-up.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Amen. The gay-as-punchline thing is so old and tired and mean. I'll be happy when we start some seeing real queer characters in Kdramas. Personal Taste is really one of the only dramas I've seen that handled issues of sexual orientation with any kind of sensitivity. There were still some pretty cheap lulz, but there was also some genuine ambiguity and even a gay minor character who survives to the end, isn't shamed, and is even presented as having a romantic life, even if there are some big miscommunications. Heck, they even send him off into the dating world at the end. Are there any others out there folks have seen? I mean, I think there was some subtext with the deserter storyline in Romantic Dr. Kim, but that's the only thing I can think of...

There's a gay couple in the family drama Life is Beautiful. It's a fairly decent story, but it's not anything brilliant. It focuses on coming out and being accepted by family.

0

Required fields are marked *

I am only a couple episodes in but there is a gay character in Reply 1997 that for the episodes I've seen is handling his character well. They touch on his fears of being found out and his secret crush on one of his friends. I don't know how his character is handled through the rest of the show but hopefully it's well handled.

One thing I am disappointed about in kdramas is how they either wont touch on anything queer, or they turn it into a joke.

Required fields are marked *

I do agree that it would be interesting if they really made so PHS was bi and there would be more high stakes in the OTP shipping game. In the taiwanese drama with ariel lin and bolin chen there was a gay character that was frustrating at first but ended up happily at the end. Also this bromance playing for lulz is evident even in talk/variety show Knowing Brothers between my bae Heechul and Buzz's Min Kyung Hoon.(they are the best thing about it though)

0

Required fields are marked *

100% agreed. Korea's slowly but surely getting better about homophobia but they're still a long ways off, especially compared to some other East Asian countries like Taiwan (which seems to be on its way to legalizing same-sex marriage). Many Japanese dramas also are not afraid to at least talk about homosexuality in a serious, non-joking way.

The only drama I can recall that I have seen that dealt with a gay character with sensitivity and took it seriously is Hoya's character from Answer Me 1997.

You know what I really loved about Hoya's character in 97 was that apart from the unrequited love for his straight, best friend (which does happen to some of us in real life), he wasn't a tragic gay character AND we saw him moving on with his life and finding love as a gay man. There's so many things to love about Reply 1997, it's very dear to me.

I'm always a sucker for bromance, but then it upsets me too, because I know they'll flirt with the idea of someone being involved with he same sex, but it'll never actually happen. If they really want to show us a bromance we've never seen, they'd go the whole haul and make Hyung Shik's character bisexual. It would be interesting to see him juggling a crush on two different people.

They won't do that though. They'll just use the gay angle for the funnies. I'll try and wait patiently until I can see an actual gay/lesbian couple in a drama (there's a few but they're mostly unsatisfying). Shall I give it ten years?

LOL Hyungshik was born to do these roles (even royal ones), since he's a RL chaebol.

Interested in the new development of the plot tho. Wouldn't be surprised if Ji Soo develops the classic sexuality question...then that might mean both male leads will be bi (in Jisoo's case, bi-curious).

Jisoo though is a RL-softie, just look at his friends list: Nam Joo-hyuk, Suho, Kim Hee-chan, Ryu Jun-yeol, Lee Won-geun...
