Hip-hop youth webtoon Who Knows gets drama adaptation

There’s a new webtoon-to-drama adaptation in the works which fits into a familiar niche as a youth drama about music and romance, but it offers something slightly different: It’s about an awkward teenage boy who becomes a hip-hop musician superstar. Cool. The webtoon by Kim Jae-han is called Who Knows, a slangy phrase that’s used in a lot of different ways, from “what’s there to know” to “who the hell even knows,” and it’s a high school romance that cleverly integrates music as a part of the webtoon-reading experience.

The drama is being planned as a 16-episode pre-produced series, and an early casting offer was made to Yook Sung-jae (The Lonely Shining Goblin) to headline, but his agency almost immediately released a statement that he’d already turned the project down. That’s too bad, though honestly if the drama is about a hip-hop artist, it’s one case where I’d want them to cast someone who’s just as talented a rapper as he is an actor. You guys will probably know better than me—does such a person exist?

The webtoon is about a 19-year-old high school senior named Kim Won-joon, an introspective, overthinking kid who basically keeps to himself and tries to stay invisible from bullies in order to survive at school. He carries a torch for a girl he’s never even met—a senior at a nearby school who’s famous for her uljjang photos online—and he’s a bit of a fanboy about her, thinking himself a mere mortal who could never reach his “goddess.”

One day, his best friend decides to enroll them both in an open audition to be models (the friend hilariously submits Won-joon’s photo and a photo of Kimura Takyua for himself), and Won-joon’s ordinary life drastically changes when he meets his goddess at his audition, and then gets cast as a model. He sort of stumbles into the entertainment world and then discovers a love and talent for music, inspired by the girl he’s in love with.

I’ve only read the beginning of the webtoon, but what I like about it is how awkward the hero is—he’s not cool or suave at all, which is appealing when you know that he’ll somehow transform into a superstar. It’s maybe not as drastic a transformation as the one Kim Soo-hyun underwent in Dream High, but it’s that type of trajectory, where he starts out a bumbling fool who can’t even talk to pretty girls.

The story is set in 2007 to 2010, and the drama plans to use the music specific to that time, and even hopes to get cameos from different hip-hop artists for each episode. Casting is still underway and a broadcaster has yet to pick it up, but Who Knows plans to start shooting in July.

Lol, I also thought of Kim Min Jae. It's like the role was made specifically for him.

To be honest, I've been wanting a drama like this but wondered if it would ever happen. If there is romance that will hopefully keeps things from getting messy and appropriative in that try-hard and offensive sense. Hopefully, since there would be a youth aspect to it and they would want kids to watch, lol.

I'm interested. I want to see where it goes...hmmm.

Yeah!! It's like this was made for him really!! I couldn't believe my eyes. Did I misread it?! He can rap dance sing and he's 20. How can this be so perf! ? And from watching his dramas, He can play both a fool and a cool guy well ?

Reading the introduction of the main lead already got me hoping they'd find the leads and start shooting soon! I have this things for introverts and overthinkers! Basically cos I feel them. Heh. ?? And I honestly also would've loved to see Sung-jae in this role - a fanboy and a rapper but oh well! I just hope they find a main lead. And I'm also excited to see who will play as the "goddess".

OMG, YES, I'M SO IN. ????? this sounds GREAT and so much fun. The main character's description of being awkward brought Michael Cera to mind. He's the poster child for being awkward and he plays it so well... but it's mostly because he's just playing himself. Now, is there a Korean ver of Michael Cera?

Jaw dropped at the mention of Sung-jae! I can't really see him being awkward, but I would've loved to be able to see him take on a different role!

What about Do Kyung Soo? He can act and rap really well given he's a musician in EXO and actor in lots of great dramas/movies. Pick Do Kyung Soo.

Sungjae and Kim Minjae, the two "jae"s would have been perfect for the role. Too bad they're busy.

Among the suggestions, I like Lee Hyun Woo but he needs to move on from high school or music dramas.
Ilhoon is a risky suggestion, but I like it surprisingly a lot.
I can see Chanyeol or Baekhyun only if they improve their actings.
V (Tae) would be perfect as the awkward turned model turned rapper but I'm scared if he takes on a major role too soon.

Just having the 'hip-hop' in a drama reminds me of Netflix's, 'The Get Down'. Would love to see how well they search for the lead. A very lesser known/unknown rapper/actor would be awesome to find and cast in this instead of an idol.

This sounds dope. I'm loving The Liar right now, so I'm hoping for something as well done, but with hip-hop!

I hate it when I see guys put on a show and pretend to be all cool and swag and think that's "rapping." So I hope whoever gets casted will have the skills to show it, be less talk, and more show. Or should I say, less showy and more rap. lol

I can see Kim Min Jae as the male lead. He appeared on show me the money and although he was only in the initial trials, he can rap better than an actor that never tried rapping before. And he's a good actor as well.

I know this is too late for me to comment but could they cast Kim Min Jae? From what I can see in The Best Hit, he could pull this off. The character description is almost to a T to what was his in TBH and he's a good rapper too. Maybe this is just my flimsy hope I don't think he would take on a character as similar to his previous role.

Whatever happen to this drama, any latest news about it? July is almost over and I don't remember seeing news of casting or first script reading about this.

It's unbelievable but Kim Min jae perfectly fit the lead role in every aspect! Good actor who can dance and rap and sing! And would be able to act as adorable awkward kid for sure.
But he has two big movie projects coming up which start shooting right after his drama end?
Production team please wait for him. I don't think anyone wold be suitable for this role more than Minjae. Seriously, objectively.
