* Congratulations and thank you to JB, GF, and all the people behind this wonderful site! More power to you, folks!

* I think lately I've been more on Dramabeans than on my own personal social media page. The stuff people post there either makes my blood boil or makes me depressed. Sometimes, I question myself on why I'm even "friends" with some of the people over there. While here, I'm just all smiles. Why is that? Haha!

* I have a case of really bad morning sickness (the last one was worse but this is still pretty bad) but I have to just roll with it since I also have a very active 16 month old to take care of. The husband does his share when he comes home from work, but I don't know how I am able to even function during the day. I always look forward to the weekends when I can afford some time to catch up with my dramas.

* Speaking of which, I'm currently enjoying:
Mystery Queen
Radiant Office
Father is Strange
Chicago Typewriter

Though I don't know if CT will sustain my attention enough that I don't quit it halfway. There's something about it that hasn't made me feel wholly invested on it just yet.

* And with that, Happy Easter weekend, everyone!

Congratulations on baby to come! Quite a feat with an active 16-month old on top of morning sickness. I hope you have help and support when your husband is not with you. DB is a great place to find warm support from miles away! Take care! ? ?

Oh welcome back OT #495 to .... er ... your spot on DB ? You came back so quietly I didn't realise you'd returned. I hope you had a good rest and can bear with the weight of many words. I think this time, the load will be a little less. We kinda not want to crash you again, you see, ... and not everyone may have noticed that you're quietly convalescing. ? ? Take care now!

Happy OT!

Is it just me? I am still finding my way around this new place. I even missed Open Thread. I guess it will take a while to get use to navigating and making use of the new features. Pretty much like how I never get the latest phone model because I use like 30% of the features and don't bother to learn the 70%.

No, actually you didn't miss OT this week because it really did go down for some hours and came up much later. So you may have been looking for it when it went off on sick leave for a while. I didn't know when it re-appeared, but I'm glad we found it! ?

Happy Easter weekend everyone. This has been quite some time since I last posted on an OT. I'm excited to be back here and see so many new names among other members whose names I have been seeing for a while.

I'm currently taking a break from K-drama, hoping the premier of Ruler of the Mask would pull me back to K-drama watching. Well, I'd be lying if I said currently airing K-dramas have lost their appeals to me because I'm still much in love with Tunnel and it's the only show that I'm keeping a tab on atm. However, I'm thinking of saving it later to binge-watch.

I'm now officially obsessed with Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. I didn't intend to watch this one at first because the first time I saw the title in an OT earlier this year I thought, 'oh well what a mouthful of a name', and given my past experience with BBGS:SH:Ryeo (which was also hell of a long name) decided to give it a pass. This week, though, I came across a thread on another blog where there was a heated debate over the main casts of the drama and the upcoming movie and I thought, 'Eh, let's give it a go to see what the commotion is all about'. And then I'm hooked and cannot get enough of Mark Chao and Yang Mi, despite her not being one of my favourite actresses before. I now refuse to move forward past ep 49 for fear of withdrawal (yeah reading from the comments many seem to suffer from huge withdrawal from the drama) and have kept playing the middle part (from ep 11 to ep 49 or something) for a few days now. My favourite episode is ep 30 where the leads met again. Their scene under the peach blossoms was really well-done: full of emotions and artfully shot. Well let's say the CGI is terrible but for the acting I'm willing to give it an easy pass.

What about you guys other Peach Blossoms fans? Which episode is your favourite? And are you looking forward to the movie version?

Hi! I cannot get over Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. Mark Chao and Yang Mi are so much love. I love that scene in episode 30 too. I think I teared up when they met again. My favourite episode has to be ep 48. I paused for a bit after watching that cause I knew the angst was coming. Otherwise, I couldn't stop watching. Next month, I plan to re-watch the entire drama slowly, taking in details. I wish I could take an amnesia potion and watch again without knowing the story to experience the first viewing feels again haha.

To cope with withdrawal, I'm re-reading all the Three Lives, Three Worlds novels. It's interesting to note the subtle changes the drama makes. For example, that scene in the Water God's palace where Ye Hua jumps her and she slaps him, in the novel he catches her hand to stop her. In the drama he lets her slap him. He deserves that slap and he knows it. I do like drama Ye Hua so much better than book Ye Hua. On the flipside, Bai Qian is more sexually aggressive in the book. When she was Su Su, she asked Ye Hua to sleep with her for repayment. The marriage happened later. In the Water God's palace she's the one who initiates the sex. And she gives back as good as she gets after the painting. I suppose it's the drama censorship laws that require women to not display desire. :sigh: Same reason why the drama removes all mention of homosexuality though I'm glad they keep Zhe Yan and Fourth Bro's relationship intact as much as they can through subtext.

I'm definitely looking forward to the movie version. I liked the trailer. Interesting to see how Yang Yang and Crystal Liu will interpret the characters. Watching Yang Yang in Love O2O right now, in fact. I like the main leads (love how they subvert all expectations of misunderstandings and petty jealousies) but the rest of the characters are annoying me.

Thank you SO much for the extras on the novel's characters. I also agree that such a pro-active female character might not be appropriate for the small screen yet and they might have reasons to make alterations to her character. Ye Hwa has also been said to be romanticised in the drama version (and I bet he will be romanticised in the movie counterpart too), that's why many people like the drama YH than the novel character. I don't mind either way because MC is so amazing. I mean I have seen many tsundere characters in dramas but have never swooned over anyone as hard as him. It's also interesting to know that Zhe Yan and Fourth Bro have something romantic going on between them. I might not have paid full attention to the drama so I completely missed this :O. I'm also savouring the drama again episode by episode now, partly to bask myself in the story again, partly to delay as long as possible the imminent ending episode (I'm not ready for it yet!!!) and partly to wait for the movie to come out. I'm watching Love O2O on the side to ease my withdrawal a bit, but yeah, like you said, the side characters do not resonate with me so well. The drama is faithful to the book, but I still feel it's lacking something that I can't quite put a finger on.

I love Mark Chao and Yangmi, but I adore Dilraba and Vengo more! I've been re-watching Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms whenever I can, and re-read the Pillow Book (of Donghua an Fengjiu) to curb the withdrawal. I'm so glad to find fans of the drama here in DB!

I don't think the CGIs were terrible. I don't know why but I just admire how the Chinese are so bold incorporating CGIs into their dramas, regardless of how well made or badly made they are. Seeing their BTS and how they just have to act out scenes imagining the CGIs were kind of impressive.

My favorite episode has to be of Donghua and Fengjiu, and it's in Episode 53 when Donghua came to Bai Qian's fox cave to see Fengjiu and she thought she was dreaming him, in that moment fans could see him finally admitting to himself, willing himself to respond to her love, and kissed her forehead! I was dying when he said to Bai Qian, "Don't tell her I was here." *wails In the BTS, he shed tears, but the director decided not to show it in the actual episode. What a shame.

When it comes to Yehua and Qianqian, I prefer their interactions after Qianqian wiped her memories. I didn't quite liked Susu's neediness, I felt like she was relying on Yehua both physically and emotionally a little too much, so I was glad when Qianqian came back. They were much more interesting than Yehua x Susu.

Yay, the OT is up! :waves: It's been a very stressful week, what with our insane "president" trying to provoke North Korea into a pissing match (did you know that you can't dig a bomb shelter in Florida? No basements in sandy soil.) So you can bet I'm fighting panic with trivial pursuits.
On the happier side, I bought Go Billy's "Korean Made Simple", because I've been trying and trying to learn hangul, with no results. Guess what? In three chapters, that book explained a ton of things I was confused about, and now I can read some words! I might not know what they mean, but I can at least sound them out. Oh thank goodness. I knew eventually I'd find the right book! Now if I could just get publishers to print the characters in a larger font size...
What I'm watching:
Tunnel: I wasn't too sure if I'd keep watching, because the lead character rubbed me the wrong way in the first two episodes. He was entirely too tone deaf, and obnoxiously self-centered. But after watching 3 and 4, I started to like him a bit more. But also, I really liked that traditional cozy mystery feel to the truckstop murder. And I approve of how they tied the first dot murder to the present in a way that makes it seem like his time-travel wasn't at all accidental.

Mystery Queen: I'm enjoying this so much I'm having to watch it twice (subs are a bit slow, so I'm watching it without and then with.) I can't wait until her double life as a detective comes crashing down and she's forced to fess up to her in-laws that she actually has a life outside of that suffocating house.

Perfect Wife: Every episode, this show just gets creepier and creepier. Every episode, I love Jae-bok more and like Jung-hee less.
Library shenanigans:
I got in my copy of Bad Guys, which should be on the shelves next week, and I'm deciding what to order next. I'd like it to be Chief Kim, but apparently that's not available yet (dang it). Maybe a couple of movies. What movie would y'all recommend?

hi harmonyfb! Ummmmm, the bad news is you can't build a bomb shelter in FL, the good news is you're the farthest US distance from NK? ? Sorry, sick joke but we're at that point, huh ? Imagine being in Seoul! I wonder if there are submersible bomb shelters? Doesn't that sound like a kdrama waiting to happen . . . : He's a paranoid chaebol nut who thinks NK is targeting him, she's a scam artist selling purported submersible bomb shelters. Hyun Bin and Gong Hyo Jin! Ah, this stuff just writes and casts itself. ?

I just tried my account successfully today, I kept failing on the first day.

I was so happy there was a comment I made from 2012, I can't believe its still there. Now I officially know when my K drama/K popa craziness began.

Anyone watching Produce 101 season 2? Do you have any favorite(s)?
I really like Jung Se Woon from Starship, Ong from Fantagio and the cute boy with a great voice.

Hi everyone! I am wondering if end of June is the best time to visit Jejudo. Does anyone know if Jeju is suitable for female solo travelers? I do not speak korean except for a few words. I can't drive.

we went in the fall, so i'd imagine that june will be very nice! if you stay at one of the bigger resorts (we stayed at The Seaes - on the south side). at the resorts, they definitely speak english and you won't have any problems. we were told to hire a taxi driver for the day to tour (but we didn't do it, wish we did in hindsight) rather than do the tour bus option... we did neither, we walked in either direction along the Olle Trail which goes around the whole island...

i would think jeju is safe for female solo travelers, as it is a resort/tourist destination. be sure to look out in the mornings to look for (and you can hear the "whistles" sounds) the women divers - you will see the orange buoy balloons that mark where they are in the water near the shores... they are the fabulous (older) women who gather the delicious shellfish (sea snails, abalone, etc) that you will eat while on the island. so DELISH!!! we only stayed 2 nights, but if i could return, i'd stay 5 nights so we could see the whole island...

If you go at the start of June, it will be hot and humid. If you go at the end of June, it will be excruciatingly hot and humid, and very close to monsoon season. My Korean friends have told me that I can visit Korea at any time of the year, except summer when it's 'hell'. To be fair, though, I am Irish, and any weather above 28 or 29 degrees is a 'scorcher' to me.

This week has been a roller coaster, and now I'm just really concern about all the tension between US, Russia and North Korea. Can you guys imagine a real war? I was wondering about all the idols/actors who just got in the army these days... and South Korea is just there, around the corner, as the first target that will probably suffer the consequences. Lets pray and hope for the best.

I'm so surprised more of us aren't making comments like yours this week, what with all that's going on just north of Seoul. It's hard for me to understand how South Koreans live with the threat on a daily basis already. In the 80s they still did massive air raid drills monthly in which everyone practiced what to do in the case of an attack (and foreigners were restricted to their hotels), the streets were cleared and people sheltered in factories, schools, office buildings and subways. Spooky.

so much reading and watching to do now, I have been to Viljandi. It was snowing, but we were planting parsnips. We´re insane or really impatient. But I am so proud of how much I got done! Plus, no work-related matters.
My aunt was cleaning up grannies´ closet and throwing stuff away ruthlessly. I guess it is somewhat necessary but she is still a bit, you know. Careless. She wanted to give grannies´ coats, the fabric of which is woven on hand-looms, to the homeless center. She didn´t even find hand-crafted items worth preserving. My mom had a big fight with her, but since we had a lot to do, we had no time to keep an eye on what aunt was throwing away. But they are things from a time where every item had a much higher value, it was rare that you could buy anything, so I kind of understand why granny never wore them. but it is over our heads to sort through and keep everything. I saved some woven stockings that I can repair and make an art project.
why do we never see the aftermath of a persons´ death in dramas? there are all sorts of dilemmas connected to the material trace of their existence. even great chaebol family heads, it is like the only thing they left behind was the company, but there are more trivial things, like the clothes they wore. what happens to them?

Can you believe that I'm only NOW getting to City Hunter? I've only been into KDramas since last year so I guess I sort of have an excuse but not actually....

I forced myself not to watch anymore LMH series for the time being because a) I obsessively obsess over EVERYTHING about him and b) I'm afraid of running out of stuff to watch (esp as he's enlisting soon)

Needless to say, the forced hiatus is now over :) So here I am happily typing away about my "first K-Drama love" when I should actually be prepping for class tomorrow. #KDramaProblems :)
