Father Is Strange sticks around for an extra week with 2-episode extension

Aw, it’s not by much, but heartwarming weekend family drama Father Is Strange is getting an extra couple of episodes—not a surprise, given that it’s killing the ratings right now (breaking 30% ratings on a couple occasions) and getting tons of viewership support. I’m actually surprised that KBS didn’t wring more episodes out of the hit show, since I’ve seen shows regularly get four or eight extra episodes added to the order when it’s as popular as this one is.

In any case, I’ll take it—two episodes isn’t enough to worry that the show will get dragged down too much, and in any case the drama has been doing very well in maintaining a bright, feel-good tone even when it does introduce angst. (I mean, I could stand for a little less emotional torturing of poor Joong-hee, but as it is giving Lee Joon plenty of room to dig deep and deliver on the acting front, we can’t begrudge it too much, can we?)

This drama deserves all the praise it’s been getting, and I find that it warms my cold, cold heart with its matter-of-fact displays of familial love—there are a few aggravating characters, but by and large these are people who live in the real world, who encounter problems on an everyday level rather than big dramatic ones or with makjang emotions. The parents have a wonderfully supportive marriage, and the siblings are kind and caring to each other in a way that feels honest without being unrealistically sweet, either. Basically, this show has been my rock these past some months.

According to a rep from KBS’s drama department, the two-episode extension (which brings its total count up to 52) means the show will wrap on Sunday, August 27, rather than the week before. (This past weekend just aired Episodes 37 and 38, to give you an idea of where we are.) That puts the follow-up show, My Golden Life starring Park Shi-hoo and Shin Hye-sun, at a September premiere.

i'm so happy! i was wondering if it will be getting an extension because most KBS weekenders usually do but even though it's only 2 it's better than nothing, i'm not prepared to let this drama go just yet!

Excuse me? Park ShiHoo and all of a sudden Shin HyeSun? This is the first I'm seeing/hearing of this.

Gurl why, gurl????

Because lead roles aren't readily given to actors like her as much I'd like that to happen. It goes to ratings magnets regardless of their acting reputation. She has nothing to loose here. Park Shi Hoo's mistakes aren't her burden to bear.

Why don't you put our Hae Young unni's picture as well? ???

I'm OK with 2 epi! There are shows which have been extended up to 10 epi, so 2 epi is nothing, if it means I can get to see more of Unni and her various expressions. ??

This show taught me to love series about families and everyday life (and also lessen my worry over 50+ episodes). I'll take an extra week!

For once I am loving the episode extension so I get to spend more time with this lovely family! I also have full faith that the writer will not feel the need to make anyone a serial killer, an amnesiac, or getting terminal cancer to fill the extra two hours. All I need is Joong-hee smiling goofily at everything Mi-young does and Hye-young turning on her full sass!

Wow you just said everything! I miss Joong-hee goofy smile too! I may add that I would like to see more little gestures like Jun-Young feeding Joong-hee, Granny scolding him for not sleeping at home, the three daughters and mom having a mask on or Min-ha saying that his Granny can be so cute sometimes... Okay I will stop here before quoting everything lol but what can I say? This show makes your heart feel so warm ^^

Great news!

Please show, let's not have an ending where it feels too forced and rushed, with everything resolved on the last episode. I have enjoyed many dramas during their runs but then left vaguely discontented by the rushed and convenient endings.

Apart from that, the show is very enjoyable to watch!

I'm pleased. It's actually the first weekender I've committed to finishing SANS THE FF BUTTON. Lee Yuri is easily the best character in the show, and I came into this for Joon (I'm happy w his performance)

Honestly, I think the show could stand an additional 2 more episodes. I mentioned on a recap that I hate the whole,"we can't be together because of our parents" trope. But in the case of Father is Strange, it's TOTALLY justified. I need some real solid resolution before I can have that couple be together. That said, within reason, take all the time you need, Show.

Hell YES !
I was doing the countdown yesterday, already grieving in the "last twelve eps" statement....
I need more of my comfort food, as in endless useless mother in law/ daughter in law fights, unni/sunbae's marriage, Jun young growth, Joong Hee search for real family and love, Uncle and Aunt's ways of living through hard times, Granny's sass, Ra Young and her manchild boyfriend and last but not least, the devoted parents ♥

I'm happy for a 2 episode extension, this is the first time in years I am interested in a weekend drama. It is so very well made and the family dynamic is really heartwarming.

The acting is also on point for the entire ensemble.

Oh yeay! My first 50-eps weekender and I can't believe I'm actually happy for it's extension! With engaging story and wonderful acting like FIS, 38 episodes flew by like a breeze and 12 more will go by like a blink of an eye it feels like its ending already. So I welcome another two episodes of Walnut & Sunbae, Intern & Actor Ahn and Al with open arms!

Only 2 episodes extension? I need more and don't want this show to end. The characters are so interesting that I don't mind having a part 2 (if that has ever happened in the weekend drama world). Still happy to have the Byun family and Ahn Joon Hee for an extra week.

Yahoo! What great news!! Me likey.

Usually I'm not enamored with extensions as they break up the flow of a drama, but it's hard to mess up a 50 episode family weekend drama. So it's a win! Lol.

Lee Joon is playing the hell out of his role. That scene with mother Byun from ep. 38 was one of the best performances in the whole drama.
The only thing I don't like is how much screentime the mother in law gets. She is seriously annoying and I always fast forward her scenes. I don't really care about her story.

I agree, Lee Joon's acting was on pointe in ep. 38. I found myself replaying that particular scene.

"on pointe"... Was that a pun based on the fact the Lee Joon studied ballet when he was younger?

This news makes me so happy. I typically wait until a show is over to start watching it, but Father is Strange drew me in immediately. That early scene involving the kids having to sit outside until they'd made up, with the flash back to when they were little, hooked me. The scene felt like a real memory, written into the script, and so much of the family's dynamics and love toward each other has carried that same sincerity.

I feel confident that all of the current angst is going to be resolved by the fact that this family and its many extensions, at their root, love each other dearly. You can't help but forgive those you love, after all.

An excellent family drama--even the Song-Song couple loved it when it was airing in 2017! It withstands the test of time with its heart-touching family drama, interesting characters & romance plots.

You know that feeling when a regular 16-episode drama ends and you want more or you keep re-watching stuff because you haven't found a replacement? Well, just watch this 52-episode drama --it is very WORTHWHILE. It is engaging, entertaining, warm & cozy, romantic and satisfying plus it is highly rated.
