Beating hearts and fiery infernos in Are You Human Too teaser

Given that the next trope trend on the horizon is android dramas, I’m excited at this glimpse of the our next entry in the genre, Are You Human Too, and especially at how different it is from our currently airing one, I’m Not a Robot. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving the adorable romance and heart-pangs that I’m Not a Robot is giving me, but given that comparison between the dramas is inevitable, I’m glad to have them be more different than not.

Are You Human Too takes a much more serious, dramatic approach to the android premise, and seems tension-packed and action-driven based on this initial teaser. So far I’m liking the look of the show; it certainly looks to have made full use of its 10 million won budget and its fully pre-produced schedule (the drama has wrapped filming).

The show also puts the android front and center, which is the opposite of I’m Not a Robot; I’m intrigued to see how it’s the robot getting the bulk of the character and plot development, not the human. That’s because the premise centers around the android, Nam Shin-III, being brought in to serve as secret placeholder for its human counterpart, Nam Shin, a third-generation chaebol who lies in a coma. Seo Kang-joon plays both versions, and it’s Shin’s mother Kim Sung-ryung, a renowned AI expert, who is responsible for the switch; she creates the robot in her son’s image, and asks him to “protect Shin’s place.”

The teaser starts out with both versions of Shin coming face to face in surprise, and one asking, “What does it mean when our faces and names are the same?” Mom tearfully asks Shin-III (“a robot more human-like than a human”) to call her Mom, and the two embrace.

Yoo Oh-sung can always be counted on to play an ambitious villain, so I expect him to be our resident baddie here. He growls menacingly for someone to “do it in one job,” and we see a dangerous car chase unfold on the road, and Shin-III behind the wheel of a car.

As the android emerges from a car and is greeted by a staff of bowing employees, he says, “I’m not the Shin of the past.” Someone tells him in a low voice, “For god’s sake, act like Shin,” and he replies, “I’m Shin, too.” We see Shin embrace Gong Seung-yeon, who plays a bodyguard, and then an explosion rocks the interior of a restaurant. An angry voice yells, “I told you not to do anything conspicuous! Why don’t you listen?”

Then as Shin covers Gong Seung-yeon’s eyes, she says she can hear his heart beating. As he carries her out of a burning building, he tells her matter-of-factly, “I don’t have things like hearts.”

Are You Human Too will premiere in early 2018.

I was just hyping this up to my aunt yesterday, we both loved Seo Kang-joon a lot in CIIT and robot dramas are still a fresh topic. Anyway he's such a beautiful human bean!

OK, she plays his bodyguard, but in the trailer, all I see is him protecting her. He has like superhuman strength. Her job is basically void. I hope we see her kick some butts in the actual drama.

If she's the human's bodyguard, and the switch to android is made without her knowing it, that would be an interesting premise. Bodyguards aren't usually running around fighting people, they're more like super-observant wallflowers who make sure the fight never happens. So her job would still be relevant even when she DOES know what he is - she needs to control situations to make sure he never gets exposed.

There are smart ways to handle it, I just hope the production team is paying attention.

Ah, yes~ It would be better if she knows about the switch so we could write off unnecessary misunderstandings that could eventually lead to more unnecessary angst in the story-line. I'd rather watch her have adorably awkward moments with the robot version and still be competent in doing her job as his bodyguard.

This is a better fit for him than that one forgettable sageuk.
Kim Sung-ryung is one of those memorable tv mom that I love. I miss her a lot.
Gong Seung-yeon is much better leading lady for him than his previous.

I'm kind of excited to check this out. Please be good!

Fluff is not bad, I am a huge fan of YSH and still watching IANAR but the trailer looks good and the story seems better than IANAR.

@cutie Oooo..is that a new rule? Can't I say I like something more in comparison when I do? Please stop telling me what to do. If you don't agree with me, don't comment.

@vamvinco Sheesh. Why does everyone think Fluff is an insult? Did I say Fluff was bad? All I said was this show looks better than IANAR which is all fluff. Where's the lie in it? How did I put IANAR down when all I wrote was the truth?

No need to put down other drama to praise yours. They're completely different anyway. One is melo-action drama, the other is romcom. The only thing they have in common is robot/android.
We could also say that marvel movies are all fluff when you compare them to the more gritty and dark dc movies. But that doesn't make the dc ones better.
Anyway, I'm happy with this android trend and I look forward to watch this drama! We need more sci-fi in dramaland! 😆

Make it epic worthy for a prime-time show to get viewers attention then keep it edgy and exciting.

What a fantastic way for dramaland to start 2018...hee, I'm feeling optimistic today. Btw, Happy New Year to all the beanies!

I’m currently watching Circle and loving Gong Seung-yeon, so I’m excited for this! The teaser looks really cool, but I concur with anna that I hope we get to see GSY’s character kick some butt. What’s the point in having a female bodyguard character if she just turns into a damsel in distress?

Me too... And ow.. Also With that entourage thing... He is handsome though, which is why people are more lenient to him compared to female actors. I've seen mean comments to actress such as Shin Se Kyung, Yoona etc.. But to male actors? Just say he is 'not that good' but he is super good looking so it's okay.
Anw... I really like the story in this... Hope all the actors do a good joob!!

I'm very excited to see this drama ! The fact it's a preproducted drama makes me happy because it means they had time to make all the postproduction.

I like SKJ. In CITT, I found him very good and Entourage, I didn't like his character but it wasn't his fault, all the drama was meh.

I'm happy to see GSY in a new drama. I liked her in her last dramas : My Only Love Song and Circle.

I'm interested! I forgot this was happening. SKJ is very good if given the right role. He was great acting-wise in CITT, a role that really played to his strengths. I only tuned in for the beginning of Entourage but wasn't that enthralled by anyone, and that had some major acting talent that just was wasted. So I'm optimistic about him in this new drama. Plus GSY was amazing in Circle so I'm looking forward to her performance.

I’m going to go off on a tangent here to say that I like “damsels in distress”, for the simple fact that the term is used to simply degrade any woman who can’t kick butt, and is more realistic in her actions, reactions and strengths (which makes the term very anti- real life women). I actually find kick-butt heroines unrealistic, vapid and one-dimensional (unless they have a super power, like SWDBS, then and only then can I suspend my disbelief).

Now onto this drama:
The Pros:
The teaser looks great, the role seems to be fitting of SKJ, the atmosphere seems suspenseful and intense, the writer is not bad and the directing looks good - this makes me interested in checking this drama out.
The cons:
The heroine is a bodyguard (very hard to suspend disbelief on this, but I’m hoping there will be some explanation). The premise is ripe for veering into extreme makjang territory. I don’t like SKJ, but he doesn’t look bad in the teaser here.

So in the end, I don’t know if I will watch this drama or not, but I think I will check it out and see if it is to my taste or not.

There's a lot in between "a kick-butt heroine" and "a damsel in distress" – it really doesn't have to be either extreme! I don't think anyone wants every heroine to be "kick-butt", but there's simply too many that are damsels that no longer seem capable of *anything* (in Taiwanese dramas, they can't even walk anymore) once the guy comes around, whose is usually a genius of some sort. My problem is never that a woman needs help, because everyone needs help sometimes. It's the extremes that too many dramas push it too.

It's quite ridiculous to have a female bodyguard that then needs protecting (hopefully that's just a single scene, not the whole drama).

2

Required fields are marked *

But we are not talking about TW-dramas here, we are talking about k-dramas, so your examples are irrelevant because k-dramas don’t go to that extreme. In k-dramas, the minute the female lead needs help or protecting for being in a situation that 99.99% of women in real life would need saving from, she gets called a “damsel in distress” by some on this site. This is why I said that I feel that the term gets thrown around too easily.

For me I need to suspend my disbelief because she’s a bodyguard in the first place. She will look petite and have no muscle mass (as seen in the teaser) or a super power (to help at least the suspension of disbelief), but the viewer will be required to believe that she can beat up a man twice her size and that she is hired to protect a man who is bigger and stronger than she is. I’m a woman, but if I ever needed a bodyguard I wouldn’t hire a woman, because nature dictates some things. Just like if I needed a surrogate mother, I wouldn’t hire a man.

It seems interesting but my problem and worry (with all android dramas) is how are they going to develop a love line between the humans if there's a robot in place? I mean I'm sorry but if the female lead falls in love with the robot thinking it's it's human counterpart that's a bit uh squicky. Unlike in "I'm not a Robot" where the human pretends to be a robot.

What if the body guard is also a robot? A robot-android love story? Bots can come up with their own language in real life, they can surely come up with their own emotions in kdrama-land!

As a sci-fi lover, I'm looking forward this is because it promises to explore the AI's POV. Two thoughts: (1) The android trend seems a logical offshoot of the tsundere trope; (2) I love how Korean men do so much with bangs/no bangs.
