Suzy, Nam Joo-hyuk courted for new MBC drama Come Here and Hug Me

This pairing seems really obvious, but I have to say, it’s pretty perfectly matched in the popularity and talent arenas. Offers are out to Suzy (While You Were Sleeping) and Nam Joo-hyuk (Bride of the Water God 2017) to headline the new drama Come Here and Hug Me, which is currently in negotiations to secure a spot on MBC’s spring schedule.

The new series is about a man and a woman whose fates crisscross following a murder incident that leaves them both emotionally scarred. Nam Joo-hyuk is up for the role of a detective who graduated from police university. He’s described as cheerful and optimistic, and his sense of justice is so exceptional that he stands out sharply, like an awl. Suzy has been offered the role of a woman who dreams of becoming an actress like her mother, and though she endures a horrific incident, she overcomes it and becomes an actress. There were a few early reports that the part had been offered to Seo Ye-ji (Rescue Me), but those were refuted right away.

The plot and character descriptions don’t tell us much about the relationship, but it sounds like a romance melodrama, which has me a little bit worried. I like Suzy and Nam Joo-hyuk in romantic comedies, because they do well with light, funny, youthful characters (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, While You Were Sleeping), but heavier emotional fare can make them stand out in a bad way (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Uncontrollably Fond). So I’ve got my fingers crossed for some cuteness, for their sakes (and ours).

Come Here and Hug Me comes from PD Choi Joon-bae of King’s Daughter Su Baek-hyang, and writer Lee Ah-ram of drama special Land of Rain. It’s currently being considered for MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday slot following Let’s Hold Hands and Watch the Sunset, which puts the premiere sometime in May.

Talent matching, arghhh ...this pair in one spectrum and Jun-ho and Won Jin-ah of Just Between Lovers in the other side of the spectrum.

I know which one I’d choose.

I don't want to jinx it, but maybe we shouldn't be happy yet. They might cast our favs for second leads, you know such as Kim Jae-wook, Im Joo-hwan etc who are forever in second lead territory and have to be responsible to back up rookie and mediocre actors.

He's the lead in my ongoing dream sageuk so don't ruin it haha.

This casting still sucks for talented actors who haven't gotten a chance to lead a drama.

4

@kiara: there is no longer quality control in this industry. For someone talent like Im Jo Hwan for always stuck playing second lead. Hope good producer will pick him as the lead

3

@missjb & @kiara I don't want it either, but if this drama still casting good actors for second leads, hoping it will be the same case like Lee Sang-yeob, Jung Hae-in and Shin Jae-ha in WYWS in which they became more popular after that drama when before that people didn't really cared about them. Please don't let it be like UF - because we all know both talented second leads got nothing after that drama.

2

Thank goodness for PDs like Ahn who refuse to yield to the current trend.
I'm super supportive of cable dramas because at least they are trying.

2

@kiara I'm glad cables are around and more active these days.. Now with MBN, TV Chosun joining, hope more underrated talents given the chance. Rookie actors these days are lucky, they have better chances to climb up faster than rookie actors back to 2000s until 5-6 years ago.

3

If they cast supporting actors that are just as green I’d watch the drama just out of sheer curiosity of how badly/funny it would turn out. Just imagine if Suzy, NJH, Hyeri, and some other green but pretty boy actor were all cast in the same drama, I’d think a good number of people would tune in for the first episode. It’s like how people can’t help but slow down and stare at a car accident

Or maybe like Great Temptation, where the second leads are also pretty green and rookie actors.

Green and pretty actor.. CN blue jonghyun?

0

No. Please no. I would be so disappointed in Dramagods that I would probably drop dramaland and watch only j-dramas for a month or two.
At the end of every year, me and my friend make a bet who would hit big or get first main lead roles. I ALWAYS make bets on those two and for 5 years they always get second lead roles, get good public responses and get cast on ANOTHER second lead role

I lost hope for kdramaland, my only hope now is for the second leads to also get fair recognition just like Kim Ji-suk and Lee Honey last year despite of being second leads / villains.

When a black hole meets another black hole, what happens?

Google says: "Once they come so close that they cannot escape each other's gravity, they will merge to become one bigger black hole."

If only this drama was a rom-com, I think they could do it right but a melo??? Even with my newfound appreciation of Suzy because of WYWS, this feels like a stretch of that newfound appreciation...

We'll see! Who knows, they could surprise us!

NJH in Weightlifting Fairy got a role that perfectly suited him since it was close to his rl personality, Suzy in WYWS got a role that had Park Hye Ryun working overtime to make her likable even despite her acting range, I think those are the conditions under which they are bearable.

This writer is going to have their hands very full from trying to accommodate two leads with acting skills like these.

it’s pretty perfectly matched in the popularity and talent arenas

People who are critical of one might think you are seriously insulting the other.

Suzy has been offered the role of a woman who dreams of becoming an actress

Again, critics might say she *is* a woman who dreams of becoming an actress.

Or, with a little selective editing

Suzy has been offered the role of a woman who dreams...

Sounds like her last show.

Anyway, Choi Joon-bae was the second PD for King's Daughter, I don't know if he has the ability to bring out the best from these actors or not. King's Daughter had a solid line up of seasoned actors, so there was not many works to do.

I always welcome rookie writers to write full length drama, especially the ones who wrote drama specials. Although it might be harder to write 16h drama, compared to 1h drama. I do have a soft spot for the drama special writers. It's like actors who started off in small roles and having to work their way up.

There are few talented new writers who hit it off with their first drama like "Forest of Secrets" "End of the World" "Joseon X-files" "Conspiracy in the Court"etc.
Sadly some of them are not popular enough to be hired back because it's always going t be better ratings over quality.

@kiara I wish many PDs,writers of drama specials will go to cables. They don't have many freedom and have to comply to certain demand to cast popular idols who don't deserve their good drama if they stay in public broadcasters.

Wow, all the pretty though! I do prefer seeing them both in rom-coms as well because there their green is not that obvious. Suzy has gotten better at facial expressions needed for heavy roles, but as much as I love Joo-hyuk, I can freely admit he's still got a long way to go before I can take him seriously in melo. Especially when he's portraying a character older than his actual age. Idk why, but I can't take him seriously in those roles. (like in bride of haebak)

I think we should be happy with this kind of pairing because another good actor or actress would not be suffered and worked extra hard to cover his/her co-star's bad acting.
I'm not saying SSK is a good actress, but she is at least better than suzy.
NJH + Suzy = bad acting explosion.
So, we can peacefully pass on this one.

I literally snorted when I first read about this pairing on Soompi and waited forever to have a chance to laugh with fellow beanies when the news got posted here. Nam Joo-hyuk is a terrible actor (this in spite of enjoying his character a lot in Scarlet Heart, the only thing other than Cheese In The Trap I've enjoyed him in, although it's more his character I liked than his acting) and Suzy is not that far behind in terms of being a bad actress (in spite of enjoying her sometimes as Hong-joo, she was hilarious okay?) But, this is a pairing that makes a lot of sense if I've ever seen one.

how many times a tragic past for a man and woman and a present meeting make them fall in love i am so sick of this overused tropes, why do they always have scars can't they be normal people who haven't met in the past!...sigh.
I am sure they both met the killer in the past, since he's a detective he will try to uncover the murder case and she will help and they will become a target for the killer.

I'm sort of glad they're on the same level, so we don't have to think or hear about how one actor is going to drag the other one down. And the "bad acting" responsibility can be shared between the two of them instead of having one be targeted. I like these two outside of dramas and I really wish they could find their acting spirit one day and do well.

Casting aside, I'm not feeling the description of the plot at all!
