Blockbuster spy-action drama Prometheus courts Joo Ji-hoon, Ha Ji-won

The upcoming drama Prometheus: War of Fire, which was initially announced last year, has epic action blockbuster written all over it, so it makes sense that they’d go after an equally blockbuster cast, which is what we’d get with Joo Ji-hoon (With the Gods, Asura) and Ha Ji-won (Hospital Ship, Chronicle of a Blood Merchant). Both actors have been extended offers for the large-scale spy-action drama and are currently “considering positively.”

The plot of Prometheus kicks off when top North Korean scientists with secret knowledge of North’s intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear program go missing while dispatched secretly to Pakistan. In response, multiple nations jump into action to be the first to locate the missing scientists (and acquire their knowledge), which includes agents from South Korean’s National Intelligence Service.

Among those are elite NIS agent Chae Eun-seo, the role out to Ha Ji-won, and North Korean defector and former military officer Park Hoon, which is the role offered to Joo Ji-hoon. The two are dispatched undercover, disguised as a married couple, under the operation titled Prometheus. A third main character is a mysterious girl genius, Song Chae-yool, and the three characters get swept up in an unexpected whirlpool of action, espionage, and intrigue.

Prometheus comes from chief producer Choi Ji-young, who worked on spy-action thriller IRIS, period action drama Chuno, and period romantic melodrama Princess’s Man. All were massive hits, and all boasted an epic sensibility that this new drama will surely be aiming to re-create—and even amplify, with its massive 30 billion won budget.

The drama will begin shooting in May and is currently in talks for scheduling with “a major broadcaster” (so, KBS, SBS, or MBC).

300 billion won?! That's over 280 million USD! That's definitely a massive budget.

Whoa that's 7 times more than the budget of "Along with the Gods." The biggest blockbuster movie of 2017. It made over 104 million.

Are they planning on blowing up a couple of airplanes or something?

Goodluck to the investors. I hope they'll get some of their money back.

A big mahalo to @linda-palapala for turning me on to MAWANG / THE LUCIFER. A thoroughly terrific show and cast -- that didn't let up until the final second. Joo Ji-hoon was excellent.

Thanks - and I wish more people would watch Mawang (The Devil on DF). It might be 2007 but one of the best dramas. Joo Ji-hoon was perfect for the part. I've been a fan since that drama and so I'm really looking forward to this. Please accept the part!
And yes, the OSTs for both Chuno and Mawang are some of the best.

Hi, Linda!

Glad to know you'll be tuning in for PROMETHEUS. And we can look forward to seeing JJH in KINGDOM, too, battling zombies in Joseon. ;-)

Funny you should mention Kingdom. I just recommended this to a zombie-loving patient who likes historical dramas as well. The last time I saw her I mentioned Train to Busan and guess what, she loved it! Watched it the same week. I see her in six months and told her to look for it on Netflix. We’ll have something else to talk about!

Gah! I'm so glad you picked out The Devil. @llljr see you should do too😁
And I'm seriously have to go checking that exploding thread! Though to now still hoping heads will recap that show.

I'm more interested to know who is going to be cast as mysterious girl genius, Song Chae-yool - because yes, she is a genius! I don't know if they are going to cast big names too, but it seems like maybe an idol?

Anyway,I'm scared for the possibility of the outcome of this so-called blockbuster project, so I hope it is as good as it is hyped of!! These two actors are either hit or miss for me - depends on the projects they do but Ha Ji-won will be fine because she is back to her roots - action drama. Joo Ji-hoon is suddenly busy with drama this year because he also has upcoming Kingdom.

Girl genius... hmmm. How old are we talking about?

How about a rematch with JJH's costar in MAWANG, Shin Min-ah? She was great in that role.

Or maybe Seo Hyun-jin, who has ample Three Kingdoms-era spying credentials? I'd love to see her kicking butt again. I need something to help me forget her most recent character.

Either Shin Min-ah or Seo Hyun-jin would be awesome 😊

Since I didn't finish TOL, so I don't have anything particular to remember about her character LOL. If anything the writer was hugely responsible because she messed up her character and the script in general. She honestly deserved better script and co-star.

I thought Yang Se-jong did well with the character he was given until the characters all seemed to get lobotomies to ensure a happy ending. The script left a lot to be desired. Kim Jae-wook was wasted on an incomprehensible character, especially after his electrifying performance in VOICE. Arg!

I guess, Ha Myung-hee has a tendency to make me form some allergy towards his male leads, same goes to Kim Rae-won as well in Doctors. I do like Yang Se-jong and he did well, but I don't like the way he talks - it sounds quite monotone. That's my problem with him. He is still rookie anyway, has a room for improvement. But I wish he will do secondary roles or
lead weekend drama for now and go learn with sunbae. All four main casts in TOL deserved so much better. Anyway, I'm glad Jo Boah is going to do another drama with Chae Shi-ra, and Kim Jae-wook now is busy with musical 'Amadeus'. Waiting for Seo Hyun-jin's project news next.

Wow! I didn't know that Kim Jae-wook does musical theatre! Is he playing antagonist Salieri in "Amadeus," by any chance? Just thinking back to the movie, he could have a field day as Mozart, too. This sounds epic. I can just imagine him turning on the charm. ;-)

1

I think both him and Jo Jung-seok are the main characters. I just saw the posters but didn't read the details LOL.

Oh, man, what an epic pairing. I can imagine JJS as Mozart more so than Salieri, but that might be because F. Murray Abraham seemed much taller than Tom Hulce. ;-)

Per AllKpop, "Amadeus" opens on Feb. 27 in Seoul, also starring Ji Hyun Joon, Han Ji Sang, Lee Chong Joo, and INFINITE's Sunggyu.

Looks like KBS picked it up. No surprise there since Choi is a KBS producer.
I'm not a fan of either one and this big budget comes with high expectations.
It's not as big as "IRIS's" budget but it's still big for a drama.

I love Ha Ji-won's earlier dramas, "Damo" "Hwang Jini" and the movie "Duelist." I like her with Kang Dong-won too.

Anyway, it's understandable if she turn this down. She just lost her only brother.

I read few initial reports yesterday mentioned that KBS probably picked it up so it's true. Not a fan of big budget drama, but I hope this one is live up to its expectation.

I also think she still needs some time before starting another drama. I liked her in some of her earlier drama, especially Damo and Hwang Jini which remain my fav works of hers. As long as she stays away from cringeworthy roles and drama, I'll be fine with her.

The late Jeon Tae-soo didn't have many works, but his characters in sageuk such as in King's Daugher and Cruel Palace were pretty memorable for me. It crossed my mind why he wasn't very active, turned out he had a depression. I don't know if having a top star as a sibling influenced him in anyway, but I noticed Kim Tae-hee's younger brother, Lee Wan also isn't active in acting despite of having a lot of potentials.

@seralovestteobokki,

I'll have to check out CRUEL PALACE. Thanks for the tip.

At least Jinmu got some redemption in what turned out to be Jeon Tae-soo's final role. Earlier, I thought he did a fantastic job when Jinmu learned his true parentage. It was heartbreaking, and he rose to the occasion.

As in other lines of work, it may be a tricky proposition when kin are working as actors.

2

It's so sad and yes check out "Cruel Palace." It's the drama version of "War of the Arrows" one of Jung Ha-yeon's sageuk.

I think he should just stick to directing and improving his craft. His dramas are gorgeous but he doesn't do justice to good scripts.

Handling production and directing at the same time is very challenging. I don't think he can handle both (hello Moon Lovers").
Even the best directors of all time like PD Kim Jong-hak couldn't handle managing budget etc and it eventually led to the end of his career and his life.

Not every PD is multi talented like Ahn Pan-seok.

IIRC there were supposed to be 3 seasons but with short episodes.
Season 1 was reported to have only 6 episodes so there might be 18 total for all 3.

I don't know if they are filming all 3 seasons at once but it makes the most sense since the main actors are very active in films.

Having just watched MAWANG / THE LUCIFER, I'm excitedly looking forward to seeing Joo Ji-hoon teamed with Ha Ji-won in PROMETHEUS. Chief Producer Choi Ji-young has some terrific projects under his belt, so that bodes well for this one.
