EXO’s D.O. and Nam Ji-hyun courted for tvN historical rom-com

I like the idea of these two young actors in drama together, and I think they have the chops to headline a historical rom-com. There’s a new mystery rom-com sageuk on the way called Hundred Day Husband, and offers are out to EXO’s D.O. (I Remember You) and Nam Ji-hyun (Suspicious Partner) to star. The series is touted as the “comedy sageuk Jason Bourne,” and it’s about the wacky adventures of a missing crown prince.

The drama is a mistaken-identity romp about a fictional Joseon crown prince who goes missing from the palace and the hundred days he spends living as a commoner. D.O. is up for the role of crown prince Lee Yul, a perfectionist who makes one fatal mistake and nearly dies in an attack by an assassin. He falls off a cliff and must get amnesia or something, because he somehow ends up as a useless youth. Let me guess—country girl Nam Ji-hyun takes him in, feeds him, clothes him, and cures him of his luxury shopping addiction? Wait, wrong drama.

It sure sounds like the Joseon-era Shopping King Louis though, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I guess Nam Ji-hyun just seems like the kind of girl who would bring stray puppies home, no matter the century. It’s a cute premise and I love historical comedies, so I hope they sign on.

The drama comes from writer Noh Ji-seol of She’s So Lovable, Scent of a Woman, and Dr. Champ. Hm, one of these is not like the others (pssst… she was in fact not so lovable), but hopefully that drama was a fluke. I mean, they’ve already got a leg up with this casting, right?

Hundred Day Husband is being considered for a broadcast later this year on tvN.

But I love NJH and I liked/loved Kyungsoo's acting in his movies. I'm not even a fan of EXO but I like how he acts hahaha

Kyungsoo is a really good actor, I don't know if you saw It's Okay It's Love or the first few episodes of I Remember You/ Hello Monster. He's also being in a bunch of movies alongside Jo Jung-suk (Hyung/ My Annoying Brother), Shin Ha-kyun (Room No 7), Joo Ji-hoon, Ha Jung-woo, and Cha Tae-hyun (Along With The gods) and he's been receiving a lot of recognition for his acting, even winning Best New Actor at 2017 Blue Dragon Film Awards.

Nope none of the above. But he has good features that would look great in a historical drama.

Hey man as long as the cast can act and the writer/ PD are good, I am in.

YES! Kyungsoo or D.O for those who are not familiar with his real name, is shockingly good when it comes to acting. I tend to be biased towards all EXO members, but I know the tack record idols have with acting. So I went into I Remember You and It's Okay It's Love with a little trepidation. But he blew me away with his acting! So much so, that I was a little concerned at how well he played these slightly unhinged, or downright psychotic characters so well.

But then I also watched him in comedic roles like Hyung. And he was equally good in that? He kept up with Jo Joung-suk which is praise right there. I actually cried in he end of the movie!

So yes, I'm excited about this pairing.

The only thing I've seen him in is I Remember You and he did such a good job playing a serial killer I still get slightly creeped out by him sometimes 😅
I need to watch one of his comedic roles...

1

DO delivers a convincing portrayal of his character. This time I am looking forward to something that he'll be in and with a love interest on the side.

NJH on the other hand is just right for the type of naive girl next door with a heart of gold.

I just cant help smiling at the thought — It sure sounds like the Joseon-era Shopping King Louis — as girlfriday puts it.

Nothing against D.O but I'm disappointed. I was hoping for my girl to be paired with my fav boy Yang Se Jong. Moreover, it's a sageuk, my favorite genre (and to add to the tragedy: on cable)...*crying in a corner* Why are you doing this to me Drama Gods?!? Why? *sulking*

I have nothing against Do either. He is a dedicated actor but I'd prefer those boys over Yang Se Jong to be honest.

@kiara Yang Se-jong is fine but he sometimes is overly-praised. No doubt he deserved praise for Duel, but he was just decent in other works. Potential is there but still need to work on his acting and especially the way he talks. For a rookie, he is good but I don't really find anything special about him especially if we put him with those talented child actors. I think Temperature of Love made me changed my opinion about him as well despite of that drama was in favor of his character more than any other characters.

9

We do often over praised some of our oppas as genius before they are even halfway there.
I've done that with a certain oppa until I went back and rewatch his old shows and realized how average he was back then lol.

Don't mind me and my bias preferences:).
Those boys have been around for so long and I feel like I've known them a little better since I've watched a lot of their dramas.
I can't say that they've always been outstanding with their transition to adulthood but they are mostly solid from all the years of training.

Lead roles comes with high expectations and Yang Se-jong got there faster than he could handle imo.
I like him but he is still green and not solid enough to carry a drama on his own because it takes time even for the most talented actors.

I just don't feel confident in what he's shown so far, that it would keep him in the leading man territory for a long time.
I watched some of his interviews and he really wants to learn from his seniors so I hope he'd continue to work with the likes of Han Suk-kyu etc.
I love Jung Jae-young, (his co-star in "Duel") but he was a bit rusty there.

Anyway, I think he would benefit from a few lowkey lead role in a slice of life drama. It's always a good place to practise and build a fanbase.

5

Thanks for sharing your honest feelings about him:) And guess what? I mostly agree with everything you said. I also think his agency should choose more wisely his next role. Signing for TOL was a bad move imo (I'm definitely blacklisting Ha Myung Hee's works from now on)
A weekend drama would also be a good option imo. I really like him (he really blew my mind in Duel) so I really hope for his sake (and mine) that his next drama will be a successful one (acting and quality- wise)

2

Yang Se Jong should take a break and I don't find his good at comedy/lighthearted story at all, like he lacks a lot of stage present,
it's quite funny because if you just remove D.O identity as an idol member [on top of that, in the range of EXO], people will celebrate this as supporting actor [who is loved] for years gets his prime-time leading drama.

He is the contrast of Yang Se Jong who somehow got the lead role right away without much capabilities and it just quite funny for me since the idea of D.O gets this role easily because his idol status can be applied to YSJ as an actor who got a lead role without any memorable breakout.

I will be more disappointed with YSJ as a lead in this project.

It's not just his fans who think he's a good actor though?
The directors he's worked with have praised his talent, his commitment, and his desire to perfect his portrayals. His co-stars always have the best things to say about his acting and the general public knows him more as an actor than they do as a member of EXO. There were a lot of people surprised that he was an idol when they saw him performing onstage because they thought he was a rookie actor.

But his acting projects after Hello Monster are all in films, and we international fans know that films takes years to reach us(me at least). So this piece of news excites me!

I really did not like Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, I thought it was somewhat uninteresting and I didn't like how the female character was written. Man, I really hope this does give me that Moonlight high. That was the second drama in almost 10 years of consistent drama watching where I felt really emotionally invested to the point of obsession. The first was Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I have a thing for fun, rom-com-y youth sageuk - so long as they're well made (*side-eyes Hwarang*).

While I haven't been following DO's career, I know he's received rave reviews for his film acting so I think he'll do a good job with this. And of course, Nam Ji-hyun will be perfect for her role.

To be honest I did not like her either, I thought it was so odd that a lawyer was talking in such a cutesy way all the time... however, given the praises here for her, maybe she was deliberately asked by SP's director to act like that? That was the first drama I saw that had her in it so maybe her other parts were better.

I liked that she was a cutesy lawyer. It kind of broke the stereotype although she could have still been a better lawyer lol. That drama was just eh, but I really liked her in Shopping King Louis. I think she's a good actress but she's still in that in-between stage of being too young (or looking too young) for roles with gravitas but being too old to be overly aegyo. It's hard to find roles that help with that transition. I think Shopping King Louis was one though.

Unexpected pairing, but I like it! Nam Ji Hyun's a pro at leading the rom-com and D.O. has shown he's got a lot of promise. I'm a little worried about the writer and how the male lead is the crown prince, which may mean scenes of old ministers arguing and OTP angst over the difference in their stations. Why can't the hero be a merchant or just a rich farmer? I really liked Nam Ji Hyun in Suspicious Partner, but I felt the writing really sidelined her during the 2nd half. I hope this doesn't happen again here!
