Facing the monster in The Smile Has Left Your Eyes

I think of fall as the season for melos, and I have a feeling that this show will have no problem in bringing the drama in melodrama. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes is gearing up to premiere next month and the show has recently released some stills and a short teaser that features our leads. The show is being touted as a shocking and fateful mystery melo, and though I wasn’t planning on adding a melo to my drama-watching plate, I just can’t pass up on this cast, led by Seo In-gook (Shopping King Louis), Jung So-min (Because This Life Is Our First), and Park Sung-woong (Life on Mars).

The teaser doesn’t reveal much about the plot but it certainly builds the atmosphere the show is trying to go for: Photos of our three leads are shown burning in flames as a moody piano piece plays in the background. We then cut to individual shots of Kim Mu-young (Seo In-gook), Yoo Jin-kang (Jung So-min), and finally Yoo Jin-gook (Park Sung-woong) as Seo In-gook recites the title of the show.

I’m so used to Seo In-gook playing the nice guy in dramas that I know it’s gonna be a bit of a shock for me to watch him play Kim Mu-young, who is described as a seemingly carefree but dangerous “monster.” A suspect in a murder case, he becomes the focus of Yoo Jin-gook’s investigation, though I’m not sure whether this is before or after he meets the detective’s younger sister, Yoo Jin-kang. Jung So-min’s character is an advertising designer with a heart of gold thanks to her brother’s unwavering love, who derives her own happiness from other people’s joy. Her warm personality masks a pain that she shares with murder suspect Kim Mu-young, which might explain her decision to become a safe haven for the mysterious man.

That decision is sure to cause all sorts of grief for Park Sung-woong’s Jin-gook, whose whole life consists of his job and his younger sister. As a detective, he’s a veteran with sharp instincts who puts a hundred percent into catching whichever culprit he becomes fixated on. That charisma pretty much evaporates as soon as his beloved sister Jin-kang appears, and he turns into a loving fool of a brother who seems a little clumsy and lacking on the outside. Aww, I can tell I’m going to really enjoy Park Sung-woong turning into a massive teddy bear for Jung So-min.

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes will premiere on tvN’s Wednesday-Thursday slot following Familiar Wife on September 26.

Just 1 month more for the show and finally Seo In-Gook is back. *__* His Hello monster being mystery melo is one of my favorite So I'm patiently waiting for this.
Seo In-Gook + Jung So-Min + Park Sung-Woong = Perfect.
I'm so ready for the brotherly love and seeing Park Sung Woong as a protective cute Teddy bear.😍

Same thoughts. I like Seo In Guk, but I'm yet to finish any of his dramas - the projects just haven't worked for me so far. I like Jung So Min well enough; but I'm really happy to see Park Sung Woong so soon after Life on Mars. I'm here for his drama!

And the premise sounds good! Will I finally be able to complete a Seo In Guk drama? ^^

Oh wow... Seo In Guk is truly an amazing actor. One of my favorite of his is Hello Monster. One of the things I find most incredible about him is that he transforms almost completely from one character to another. Sometimes I am shocked it is the same actor. He seems to become the character. Most other actors still seem to be same guy.... just playing a different role. But with Seo In Guk, he portrays each character like a work of art. Maybe it has been the character he plays that you haven't really liked, and not the actor himself as he is just incredible in what he does.

As an example.... just compare his Shopping King Louis role with his Hello Monster Role or his Police Unit 38 role or any of the others. Seems like a completely different actor for each of those.

3

I never said he was a bad actor. He simply isn't one of my favorite actors which has nothing to do with his ability to act.

2

I can't find Hello Monster anywhere to watch.

0

Yes! He’s amazing at his roles. I totally didn’t recognize him in Master’s Sun after I saw Answer Me 1997, less than a year apart. I really loved him in 38-whatever (so many English translations of this title😅) playing all those con characters, thrill ride til the end.

3

@linda-palapala Hello Monster is on Viki by name I remember you.
You should check it out. One of the fine mystery thriller with a tinge of rom-com and the actors had nailed their job.^^

Thanks! That's why I can't find a lot of dramas because they're under different names. I'll add it to my every growing watchlist. Right now I'm obsessed with The Great Protector with Wallace Huo on Viki. When it's done I'll try I Remember You.

0

And I Remember You has Jang Nara who I loved in Miss Hammurabi!

1

@LindaPalapala
actually Jang Nara wasn't in Miss Hammurabi, that was Go Ara

0

In my area it's "Restricted Access" on Viki. I requested they add the title.

Not even High School King of Savvy? I've been a fan of both leads since then.

Hi @linda-palapala. To view HELLO MONSTER/I REMEMBER YOU try here:
https://ondramanice.tv/drama/hello-monster-detail
I REMEMBER YOU is one of my favorites and I watched it on Viki in 2016 not when it originally aired. That it is not available now on Viki is rather strange to me considering that it has 117067 followers! Go figure. I enjoyed Seo In-guk in HM and SQUAD 38.
Continuing with Viki. Recently I began to wonder if they stopped the whole business of license requests. I could not remember the last time I had a notification asking to request a license. (I figure where shows wind up is a total crap shoot now.) I signed into Viki today and there were license requests for 6 dramas including this one although on Viki it is called: BILLION STARS.

Since Kocowa has all the licenses of the big 3 networks, there’s no license requesting for US. Viki will stream anything Kocowa releases since they have a partnership (for now, I suspect it won’t last and Kocowa will take it back once its apps and membership become sustainable). However these series become restricted outside of US because Kocowa owns it and did not give Viki rights to stream outside of US. Only cable dramas will need license requesting, so anything from tvN or JTBC users need to initiate

I love melodramas very much because of the intense and raw feelings they give me if the script makes sense and it's just not about noble idiocy (like in Uncontrollably Fond). Seo In Guk has become one of my favourite with the course of time, thanks to his performances in THE KING'S FACE, I REMEMBER YOU, and POLICE UNIT 38. As for Jung So Min, I don't like her ways of always pouting her lips, but she is very pretty with this haircut in the stills. I'm looking forward to it.

I am hoping it wouldn't be the case at least in the Korean version. I know Japanese dramas don't have taboos about these type of cases, but I really hope they stop at being a melo/psychological thriller.

I’m so intrigued with this story! I couldn’t get into the original Japanese drama, so I’ll definitely have to check out this remake. I’m dying to know what happens that made the original so darn riveting and even controversial.

I’m quite excited for this pairing. I like Seo In-gook, but haven’t watched enough of his dramas, so I’m looking forward to seeing him here. LOVE Park Sung-woong and I can ALREADY see him as a devoted and loving teddy bear big brother towards Jung So-min, which is probably gonna be all sorts of cute... and possibly heartbreak?

I heartily vouch for the original... And what I liked was that it wasn't all that painful in the beginning. So it'll be interesting what angle the Korean version will take.

I stopped watching Japanese dramas cos I feel like many of them often have a very clinical approach to depicting human emotion..or maybe it's an acting problem. Korean dramas seem to tell the story more melodramatically, whereas Japanese dramas tend to tell it more dry...? A'way, I hope this version brings something new to the story.

I actually checked out the first ep and watched the majority of it, but I don’t think I finished it. I definitely agree with you about J-dramas being more “dry,” or like, they’re very real. Very slice-of-life. The characters may be dramatic and exaggerate, but the overall look and feel of J-dramas are very raw. Which is nice, but can be kinda slow and boring to me sometimes.

I read that Seo In Guk has this to say about the upcoming drama:
“Our drama is a remake, and I hope that the fans of the original work will look at this drama in a different light.”
https://www.soompi.com/article/1220995wpp/smile-left-eyes-drops-previews-seo-guks-monster-character
So I think we should expect something different from what the Japanese drama presented. He also had this to say about his character:
“His emotional state is different from the normal person’s. The first impression I had of Moo Young was someone who’s not normal, but has an intense desire to be.”
Oh, wishing my life away, but I am so anxious for September 26 to get here.

Whoa.. this could be a remake of the Japanese drama, Sora Kara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi, with the same English title. I really doubt k- drama can follow the same plot though. I watched the Japanese version over 10 years ago and still mesmerized by the performance of Kimura Takuya. It was a life-altering experience. My head was messed up for a while before could get back to reality. It was that good.
