Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 17-23, 2018

Christmas is nearly here, but that doesn’t seem to keep people from tuning into dramas.  Numbers for Monday-Tuesday dramas keep going up, save for Dance Sports Girls, who stayed within 2 percent. On Thursday, front runners An Empress’s Dignity and Boyfriend jumped to 14.6 percent and 9.2 percent respectively. Things must be getting real intense (or real romantic) for these shows!

And I’m sure I don’t even have to say it, but SKY Castle had impressive ratings yet again this week. All the way to an 11.3 percent, no less. (Since I was finally able to tune in, I now understand the hype.) The other weekend shows, like My Only Ally and Memories of the Alhambra, are still doing well, but Priest actually got its lowest rating to date with only 1.4 percent.

SKY Castle is now 7th highest rated cable drama behind Goblin, Reply 1988, Mr. Sunshine, 100 Days My Prince, Signal and Woman of Dignity.

With 10 episodes more, how high it can be?

@ordinaryguy92,

Thanks for the stats for MBC's humorous family cooking show, DAE JANG-GEUM IS WATCHING. Sadly, it has slipped below 1%. I can only chalk it up to its late Thursday night time slot. The finale is next week. I hope it ends on an up note.

It also surprises me how low the viewership is for OCN's GOD'S QUIZ: REBOOT (2.4% & 2.5%). It's an engaging forensics drama with a great cast. And it's a treat to see Ryu Deok-hwan back from the service. I like the entire cast, and have been appreciating Kim Joon-han as cranky CODAS chief Kwak Hyuk-min (who also played a self-sacrificing heavy in TIME), and Kim Jae-won as the avenging Smiling Man.

I can understand how OCN's exorcist encore, PRIEST, is drawing low numbers (Sat. = 1.4%) in the wake of GUEST. I initially wasn't planning to watch, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. Last week, it turned a corner, and yesterdays episode knocked it out of the ballpark. This is a completely different kind of story from GUEST, and I'm enjoying it. Viewers who tired of the Energumen Of The Week may want to reconsider as the show hit the afterburner last week, and continues apace with another corkscrew twist that strikes me as plausible. In fact, it explains a lot. Daebak!

Thanks also for what appears to be your timing assistance with subtitles. ;-)

Shame with Priest because it's put more details on the whole procedure and is beautifully shot.
I finally warm up to the God Quiz, I couldn't get past initial silliness but now the plot has more weight and I recognize in our hero cute judge from Ms.Hammurabi.
But stuck up sell out from CODAS is ready to get killed off in my books, I'm willing to send Red Cry after him.

@shach,

In GOD'S QUIZ: REBOOT, my sense is that the initial silliness had to do with Doc Han's being out of the loop for 4 years, and the family reunion aspect of his return. Watching the first season gave me some insight into what made him tick, but I didn't pay enough attention to the interpersonal stuff. I finished rewatching it a few days ago, and now I have a much better handle on the team dynamics, romance with Detective Kang, and past history. I only have three more seasons to catch up on. I'm impressed with how well things that happened in the first season are woven through this season's story arc.

I've been enjoying season 5 so much that I hope season 6 is in the works... but the ratings concern me. This is one Kdrama that lends itself well to multiple seasons. Ryu Deok-hwan was 23 when he started it, and has matured over the franchise's 8-year span. He first grabbed my eye with his intensity as King Gongmin in FAITH about 3-4 years ago. Such a commanding presence.

As for CODAS chief Kwak, I've wanted to wring his neck on numerous occasions. I'm getting a few inklings that there may be more to him than merely a craven desire for power and prestige, but he surely comes across as ethically-challenged and opportunistic. The one who really rings my chimes (not in a good way) is that horrid female GM Seo of Hangju Pharmaceuticals. She and the crooked chief judge in LAWLESS ATTORNEY could be fraternal twins from Hell. ;-)

Join the forces in wringing Chief Kwak's neck! I really really hate him, especially in the last episode when he put the flash drive containing the evidence to the coffee cup. Oh Man.. he did it again, covering the truth and his fault 9 years ago.

I hope someone will save Chief Jo. When she told Su-an she's going to resign, I had a bad feeling about it. I don't wanna Dr. Han is losing someone precious to him....

I can't think any other actor plays Dr. Han other than Ryu Deok-hwan. When he's playing the character, I'd thought he's a genius.. :)

2

I start to watch earlier seasons! I'm still on season 1, it has it flaws but I like it a lot, maybe because I already knew what to expect.
I don't see redeeming qualities in chief Kwak, he was willing to put in line his scientific integrity and the future of CODAS as court approved source of reliable evidence, not to mention, but it's writers fault but digital autopsy never fully replace real collecting of evidence.

@ordinaryguy92,

When I saw this week's DAE JANG-GEUM IS WATCHING, I was surprised to see that ep. 12 wasn't the finale. Was the show extended? In AsianWiki it now states 16 episodes.

I couldn't figure out how they could possibly wrap it up this week. Surprise, surprise...

But I meant the scene when the previous king was abusing lee hyuk as a child.
I think the child abuse with Ari is taking her innocence away and training her to be manipulative. Children should be allowed to be children.

Well, I'm glad that Memories of Alhambra is getting good views. Is 7.4 considered good or more than good? I am loving this drama more and more! The technicalities are great. And Hyun Bin is charming as ever!

Yes it’s high for a cable drama, but at the same time for a star studded like Hyun Bin and Park Shin Hye + high budgeted drama, it feels lacklustre for a rating. For all the hype it tried to build up prior to broadcast, ratings should be over 10%. Then again Hyun Bin hasn’t really reached his peak again after Secret Garden which is sad cuz he’s a great actor.

@13infamyss I believe Memories os Alhambra losing steam has nothing to do with actors. Hyun Bin and PSH are doing the best with lacking script and direction. After watching ep. 7,8 ( no spoilers) I realized what is wrong with drama’s flow - when the characters are in the game playing mode, the scenes are going fast. When it’s normal drama setting, everything slows down to the point it feels like the drama doesn't progress at all. The reveresed time line, when the time lapses and connections get explained backwards and repeating scenes, dialogues are the biggest mistake of this director. It’s not the right progress for this type of drama. They should’ve kept going, following the characters as they straggled and battled to survive, not to go back and slowly explain things. I will keep watching, but I don’t have high hopes for this script to deliver more than a mediocre drama.

TBH, I tend to blame the writers, not the actors. You can put A+ actors in your drama, but if the plot sucks so bad, the writing is too sloppy, those A+ actors can't save the drama and ratings.

And look at how Sky Castle is shooting up with its ratings and they have non-high-paid actors. I haven't seen Sky Castle yet, but now I`m really curious as to what's making the Korean viewers glued to their screen and spend a full hour watching Sky Castle than Memories of Alhambra. They're airing at different times, but the former has already skyrocketed in ratings.

But yes I agree that Hyun Bin is def hard carrying this drama now. I appreciate more what a great actor he is that he can still make me sit and watch this drama despite my lost of interest already of the story.

you haven't met Kim Eun Sook , i guess :)

1

@alasecond People always have issues with Kim Eun Sook’s writing, but at the end of the day, she still bags all these dramas with phenomenal TV ratings, and both international and domestic audience rave her dramas. Also remember Hyun Bin’s popularity soared high again after starring in her drama. So, while I don’t agree she’s the best writer ever, I can’t say that she writes bad plots either. She doesn’t - she proves it drama after drama after drama again.

2

Precisely,
so your hypothesis that script makes or breaks is not true.

also, KES has stuck gold with this director. he elevates her work to amazing levels - last three hits, their quality and flow is very different from KES's original stuff..

and then i hear there are dramas like empress dignity which again refute your claim.

My point is , it works both ways.. sometimes leads make it work and their brands.. sometimes it is the script.

And lastly, the sole truth, its futile to associate any kind of intelligence to a customer. Customer is fickle .. period. nothing more or nothing less.

3

This writer's dramas never really had blockbuster numbers like Kim Eun Sook, like W's highest rating was 13%. And it had lee jong suk and han hyu joo. I don't know whether it has to also do with the fact that netflix airs it at almost the same time. Maybe more people are watching it online?

Looking back, that is true. I've googled again her past works, and she didn't seem to have A+ actors too on her resume until Lee Jong Suk and Han Hyu Joo. It's just sad that TVN/production team spent $$$$ filming in a foreign country and headlined Hyun Bin and Park Shin Hye, but they're not getting results they are hoping because of her sloppy writing. I just checked Ep 8's rating, it's now gone up to 8.5% which is good. And at this point, I`m just hoping that ratings do go up because of its actors, but not so much because the writer/plot deserves it.

Actually I used that argument before that TV ratings do not go up because people are watching online, but Descendants of the Sun, Reply 1988, Goblin, and the latest Mr. Sunshine (to name a few) were phenomenal in TV ratings despite its big rivalry with online because there's something about their storytelling that keeps Korean viewers stick to watching on their TV instead of online.

Actually only Mr.sunshine had Netflix exclusively at the same time with tvn. Goblin, dots , reply 1988 were added to Netflix at a later time, after their whole run ended on TV , so they wouldn't count I guess. And I credit mr.sunshine's rating mostly to the multistar casting and the patriotic script, Koreans love these larger than life kind of dramas lol. I mean it's a topic to cash on. MOA is based on fantasy and magic, which is not a popular topic in Korea ( like look at dramas like Are you human too, or I'm not a robot, which also had robot/tech based stories and did poorly at the rating. So considering that 8% in cable overall is still a good number. At least for this writer.
And scriptwise, yeah she has the tendency to go overboard at times but this time the logics and theory behind the game are still working for me. I do keep telling myself this is magic, not a plausible setup for a game lol. But I'm still giving her creativity a chance hehe.

3

@fay17 sorry, I`m not too sure why having Netflix matters. Do Koreans use Netflix? Anyways, even before Netflix-era, Koreans have all kinds of access to online stuff. The online streams we, int'l fans, are provided to watch dramas in real time (no subs) are Korean-based. They also have massive base for torrent websites. So Koreans have always had the choice to either watch the drama online in real time or at a later time with or without Netflix. It's just that there are exceptional dramas that make them tune in to their TV instead than online.

Yes, as I have mentioned 7-8% is a high rating for cable drama, but it is not phenomenal as what perhaps the production team and cast would hope for. It doesn't help when Sky Castle, another weekend drama, is now getting the kind of ratings they are aiming for. ^_^

0

@13infamyss Netflix has the better quality reels, so it should be better than illegal online websites or torrents I think?
About sky castle, that's what I said, these are the more conventional makjang dramas (like woman of dignity in past), so these kind of shows would always cater to the older generation or maybe more female viewers, same goes for mr.sunshine which has the conventional hero centric, love for the country, as the theme.

MOA is altogether a different genre, like the writer's previous ones so this would appeal to certain group of people, like not every one would watch a matrix movie. So based on that I feel MOA isn't fairing bad. I have been a fan of this writer's nine lol so to me this feels like going back to a certain familiar world. And since such A-list actors were cast, I guess they could think of going to a foreign location , and it gives the drama a more realistic feel too, I liked the game more when it was set in Alhambra. So it would be too early to call it a failure or not meeting the expectations, I think. Even lots of dramas this year went to foreign locations and had been a rating did, at least compared to that, MOA is still managing to be rich in content and have decent ratings , so quality wise at least I would say it has been good so far.

3

*rating dud.

0

@fay17 lol sorry to barge in... the illegal website I use has many dramas (including MOA) in1080p. As do good torrents...

1

Lol @sicarius I know, I use them illegal sites myself lol. While I do personally believe that on Netflix shows tend to look much more promising and beautiful visually, [ I love that bluish tone it has], but I am not willing to buy their subscription on a regular basis. And they don't have much kdramas which I what I mostly watch these days.
But if I consider the hassle of downloading episodes each week[since I hate storing anything on my laptop], then maybe the regular netflix users would find it more convenient to just watch it over there.

0

@fay17 Hhehehe I shouldn't stream but like you said downloading is a hassle so streaming it is (would never get Netflix myself. I don't even know said bluish tone lol)

3

@fay17 I Agree that MOA cannot be considered as fairing bad. The genre itself could be little complicated for some audience, for example, older people and those who are not into gaming may not be able to appreciate it that much.
All the translated comments I have seen are praising the drama. I don't really think getting high ratings will matter that much. I know that is a good thing but creating a buzz among the people and attracting their attention is the important thing I guess. I don't really know how the profits work for the production.
Guest had around 4% rating but it is still considered a hit because of the buzz it created. I will take Hyun Bin's this drama over his last drama hit Secret Garden any time of the day. It is little regretful that the heroine of the drama is not as compelling as the hero but Hyun Bin's Yoo jin woo is a great pull for me. I will just take this as a hero oriented drama.

BTW, heard that the copyright (not sure if that was the term) or something of the star writers like Kim Eun sook, Secret forest writer and MOA writer is purchased by some big company. Which hinders public broadcast stations to get them into their productions. I don't think it is copyright but something like they joined an 'agency' and the productions will have to bargain with them for their scripts.
Any details??

1

True, the writer might no be a big name like KES, NHK, Hong sisters but she is a creative ones. I love all her scripts (Nine, W, MoA) and polished her skill so much better now. It might be due to preferences of certain people, which contributes to medium viewer but I am so glad Netflix aired it here 😊. I never though Mr Sunshine has a good opponent this year but then, I'm so happy to join kdramaland back.

KES can open her own agency and charge hefty fees :P

1. If you are a tv channel desperately looking for high rating drama

2. If you are an actor desperately looking for a successful drama

she'd be the richest lady in korea if she became more business minded

First time I ever appreciate a drama so much. Memories of Alhambra is an outstanding drama with good casting and definitely a refreshing concept. I applaud the writer and director for this master piece of work. I finally found a drama that is not the typical lovey-dovey cliche romantic story. This had got to go down as Hyun Bin's best drama and performance alone side gis melodrama The Snow Queen but sadly he's very underrating. He's such a capable actor who's freaking versatile. Sadly he had a couple production that is so much more memorable and meaningful than Secrect Garden but they're not well received.

I couldn't have agree more Memorise of Alhambra is a masterpiece and is Hyun Bin’s best performance of all too. I was first introduced to him and his works through Secret Garden because it was so hype up. His portraying of Kim Jin Won is not bad but I still don't get the hype about him, the drama and the Sega couple. Not until I watched some of his other dramas and film like The Snow Queen, World Within, Friends, Our Legend, and The Fatal Encounter: I've come to realize how capable he is as an actors. I find those low rating and bad receiving dramas of him more meaningful and also have more depth than Secret Garden. So it's very disappointed that those great dramas are not being recognized. He acting is superb in those roles. I even find My Lovely Kim Sam Soon better than Secret Garden. Hopefully he'll get recognized for Memories of Alhambra because it's his best now.
