Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 19-25, 2019

I’m sad to report that ratings are still looking pretty… well, sad. At the beginning of the week, Let Me Hear Your Song could barely stay around 3 percent. And Welcome 2 Life, which had been performing okay thus far, is now having trouble making it past 5 percent. The Wednesday-Thursday shows are doing a bit better, but not by much. At this point, I’m feeling bad for any show and its crew that have to take the weekday slot.

As usual, the cable shows are getting most of the viewers, from youth drama A Moment at Eighteen to thriller Class of Lies. Let’s not forget the popular weekend dramas Watcher and Hotel del Luna; numbers for both went up this week. The former aired its finale this Sunday and the latter will air its finale this next Sunday. Hotel del Luna has already hit double digits more than once, so I’m hoping its finale is able to too, or maybe go even higher.

This is what you pay for discriminating against Beautiful Mind. ManH was talked more about its ratings and now those same ratings have become a norm. I'm sure someone is losing money here.
And sept has 23million $ suzy.

Omg. Switzerland? I kept thinking it'd be some hot tropical jungle. But Switzerland? But wherever he goes, he'd be DIVINE. I read an article last week about him, and holy moly he looked so hot! He's going to have a soldier's close cropped haircut. I imagine him being tough and cool and hard and I can't breathe.

@yyishere I guess Swiss mountains look like North Korean mountains? Honestly, I was surprised too.

1

So, @yyishere . . . linky-dink to said article?

0

I think the Swiss location was to show how rich SYJ 's character is; I would have assumed they would have filmed the North Korean border elements in Paju (as other films have done).

The trip seems an expensive tangent from the story premise. Again, I am worried that this series may be more style over substance.

why if I hear Switxerland I imagine him hopping over green hills yodleing merrily lee-yi-oa-lee-yi-oa-le-hi-hoo!

They will paraglide from swiss alps to north korea. Hahaha

@bbstl @wishfultoki @kurama

But do jungles look the same? Isn't the story about Dimples getting lost in a jungle? Unless he makes his way to a mountain, shirtless of course - this is a very importsnt part of his character to show his resilience. He rips his shirt in the jungle, and from the 2nd ep onwards, he has no shirt, just abs to keep him warm.

The story is about lady lost in jungles. Dimples will rescue her. Can he be shirtless at swiss alps? I thought it is cold there. Ahaha

1

I don't think there is jungle in North Korea... The heiress paraglide from South to North Korea, I'm pretty sure it's more like a normal forest than a jungle.

@katakwasabi If there is a lot of sun, the weather can be warm. Even if in winter, you can see people in T-shirt on the terrasses of the ski stations.

Welcome 2 Life is a weird watch for me. The episodes don’t follow each other naturally. It’s like you are thrown in the middle of a new case in Rain’s parallel life with each episode. Also the number of random grim murders is off-putting when you don’t even know how they relate to his “real” life. I think that has to do with drop in ratings. The show is asking the audience for patience but not helping them piece together any clues.

I am so behind in my dramas. The last dramas I watched were A Moment at 18 ep 1 and Rookie ep 1. Too lazy to continue watching, it's like I know I'd enjoy watching them, but it's just too much of an effort. Only the thought of Hyun bin stirs my interest.

According to the linked Soompi article the new MBN Wed/Thur drama GRACEFUL FAMILY had a nationwide viewership rating of 2.7 percent (which probably is not that bad).
GF is available English subbed under the title ELEGANT FAMILY at
OnDemandKorea.
Here is the referenced Soompi article:

Availability update. GF is also airing on Viki!
I went to Viki to check the "Coming Soon" list to see if MY COUNTRY is there and noticed the availability of GRACEFUL FAMILY. It may have been on the CS list but I don't remember seeing it which gives me hope that JTCB's MY COUNTRY will still be picked up by Viki.

Melo Suits Me's ratings just proves how a drama can't be measured by ratings alone. This high quality drama is such an underrated gem. I hope its ratings rises next week even just a little bit.

I just realize why the executives in Beom-soo's company want to halt Jin-joo's drama because her story is not common to attract the rating. Sadly, it happens to "Melo Suits Me." :(( This drama is so good because it's authentic and unique. But not everyone likes something like that... :(

Sadly, yes.. :( For me "Melo Suits Me" is such a thoughtful drama. I can relate some unique characters, even Eun-joong's talking to his dead boyfriend. Aren't we unique in our own ways?

And I love their uniqueness are blended with other characters, like the three girlfriends and the bro (is he a gay?), Eun-joong with So-min, and Jin-joo with Beom-soo....

But I have to admit, jtbc is not afraid of showing us different and unique drama for us even though it's not always a hit...

The bro is gay! This show is breaking stereotypes and discusses topics that are not usually seen in dramas!

Maybe because JTBC is a cable network that produces quality shows like Melo Suits Me and Age of Youth HAHA

2

@sensationalfantasy, agreed! I actually love this topics, it's so refreshing. And I love how these big crowd doesn't make it any problem like when Miso's manager told her that the bro is the lover from the producer, and who the producer asked him if the caller was a man or a man (when the sister's friend called him. He said it's OK and to take the call if it's a woman).

In most society, things like gay is quite stereotyping, including in SK, and it becomes a big issue like we've seen in "DS60D." And I actually just came a crossed an old web drama, "The Boys Next Door" (you might have watched it), when the people around them "assumed" they're gay just because what accidentally "happened" to them... The story is quite refreshing and it shows how we - the society - usually presume something.

I think they are not done with WATCHER yet if you watch past the end credits of the final episode.
I'd take that as a preview for a 2nd season.

Let's mention the big ratings hit of the past week: Love Alarm, on Netflix. They dumped 8 episodes at once and called it season 1 but I think they just are splitting the typical series into 2 parts. Oh my god, this is a GOOD drama. The quality is top-notch and the story's interesting. On the one hand you have a lot of the usual drama tropes like a girl taken in by her resentful extended family but it's all done very well. On the other you have this premise that sounds like a fluffy romcom idea but is actually more serious: the love alarm is an app you get on your phone. Once you have it anyone else with the app who "likes" you will ring your alarm. But the line between lust, love, and twisted desire isn't clear. The love alarm has far-reaching ramifications on society and the show doesn't shy away from that. (For instance a woman thinks she's being stalked but then her love alarm rings so she's reassured, but the ringer was her stalker who then assaults her). The love alarm outs gay people and alienates people who aren't as attractive. And right in the middle of this you have 3 people in a triangle... it's so well-drawn. Even US media is talking about it.

Sorry to break it. They have not filmed more episodes, so sadly it is gonna take long time before seeing any season 2 and a conclusion for Love alarm.... Cast have moved on with Kim So hyun filming for The tale of Nokdu and Song kang in When the devil calls your name. Reason I have not even started to watch Love alarm because of this. Just irritating having to wait a long time for an ending to the story...

Lee najung did an interview recently and said this was the best drama she has ever made. Everyone is excited for another season which netflix has to green light. The drama is top 10 trending worldwide on netflix which is crazy considering how it wasn't even promoted heavily nor did they have the massive budget of Kingdom.

It's crazy how low ratings have been these days. It seems that less and less people are watching TV since there are always reruns or they can just look the episodes up online at a later time. I was just talking to my Mom about how before, everyone would rush home just to watch something on TV or else you'd miss it. Baker King Kim Tak Gu getting over 50% ratings before sounds like a fantasy now.

They had this same problem in the States/Canada Tv industries and I think it's for the same reason. A show or two gets massive, a new audience is discovered, someone makes heaps of money and then they try to recreate that by pumping out ridiculous volumes of content. Some of it is excellent but a lot of it is generic pulp used to fill time slots.

Then they start to extend shows or cut them. Quality falls. People don't know what they're getting into with a new show. Will it be cut? Will they announce it's seasonal? Will it end badly? How do they choose what to watch when there's a dozen new shows starting? You don't have everyone at, say, your work watching the same show because of the huge variety available and so the sense of community around watching is gone.

And so people delay watching or don't pick up anything new at all, waiting to see how other people feel about it or what ratings it got or what the reviews say. Netflix wading it with its antics isn't helping.

Ratings will continue to fall as long as the industry is pumping out huge volumes of content just for the sake of pumping out content. The fact is, everybody would watch a bad show if it was the only one on and everyone else is watching it. They're not going to watch 10 bad shows and they're certainly not going to sift through the 12 airing to find the two that aren't bad.

Unfortunately, as long as the industry is making money from quantity rather than quality, ratings will continue to fall.

I agree. The American shows just don't do it for me so I don't watch TV. It's just the format doesn't sit well with me. I hate seasons. Lol. I do agree with your comment though and Netflix obviously isn't helping.

It's funny coz I was just listening to Tablo's podcast earlier about how our choices of film gets affected by sites like say rotten tomatoes. That (reviews) becomes our way to filter out "good" or "bad" shows now as compared to before when we watch it ourselves and decide if we like it or not.

Still, it makes me wonder if one day, TV would just be gone for good. Like everything would be a web drama, web show, or the like.

A lot of it has to do with the watching model. The #s we get in this column are just the regular Nielson's for watching live. I don't think they include DVR copies that are watched within the next 24 hours. They definitely don't include online/app views.
