Supernatural-comedy drama Zombie Detective releases character teasers

I’m much more enthused about Zombie Detective after watching these hilarious character teasers. It’s great to see Choi Jin-hyuk (Rugal) in comedy again after a long line of serious roles.

Starring as the titular zombie detective, Choi Jin-hyuk’s character wakes up on day to find that he’s become a zombie and has no memory of his past, human life. After two years of the zombie life, Choi Jin-hyuk the zombie becomes a detective to find out the truth about his own identity.

Choi Jin-hyuk’s character teaser emphasizes how unlike a typical zombie he is. In an acrostic poem style (that doesn’t translate very well to English), the teaser says that there has been no zombie like him before.

Choi Jin-hyuk is shown to be petty-minded, as he doesn’t share something out of frame with Park Joo-hyun (Extracurricular). He’s also frail, as can be seen when he collapses in the streets. He’s full of greed, as can be seen when he eats everything in the fridge in the middle of the night. But he’s also full of affection, as he embraces Park Joo-hyun in a warm hug.

My favorite cut is of Choi Jin-hyuk enjoying the heck out of blowing bubbles in his way-too-small tub. The teaser ends with a flower-decked Choi Jin-hyuk swinging in a hammock: “The world’s first lively and sweet zombie can be seen August 31.”

Similarly in an acrostic style, Choi Jin-hyuk narrates Park Joo-hyun’s character teaser. She’s an investigative program PD, whose personality is refreshingly direct. In the teaser, she’s described as a person who is more zombie than a real zombie.

She has extra-human stamina, as can be seen when she chases something in the streets. As she peers into an office, her tenacity is praised by Choi Jin-hyuk. Again, she’s described as a human shockingly more savage than a real zombie.

KBS Monday-Tuesday drama Zombie Detective, directed by Shim Jae-hyun and written by Baek Eun-jin, will begin airing on August 31.

I think it's going to be funny but I don't like the makeup I think it's disgusting, I know that's exactly what it has to be but 16 episodes with a man with that look could be too much.

Maybe his zombie looks will improve as the story advances, something like in the movie Warm Bodies where the zombie becomes less disgusting as he learns to be human.

This being like a tv show Warm Bodies would be pretty cool. A cross between Warm Bodies and iZombie maybe??

It reminds me the humor of Warm Bodies that was super funny. If they don't take themselves seriously, it could be fun to watch.

That movie was what I thought as soon as I saw these teasers. If it's anything like that I might watch

Warm Bodies is a great film. I just rewatched it last week and it's just as good now as I remember.

A zombie who talks and interacts with humans in a non-brain-eating way reminds me of a zombie in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series who is always campaigning for undead rights and once complains:

"Huh! Priests!" said Mr Shoe. They're all the same. Always telling you that you're going to live again after you're dead, but you just try it and see the look on their faces!"

Pratchett also had a wizard who was annoyed to discover that after dying he was undead instead of properly dead:

He still looked dead. Pale face, red under the eyes. A dead body. Operating but still, basically, dead. Was that fair? Was that justice? Was that a proper reward for being a firm believer in reincarnation for almost 130 years? You come back as a corpse?
No wonder the undead were traditionally considered to be very angry.

There was a really interesting BBC series called In The Flesh, where the story was that a cure had been found for the zombie disease. The now ex-zombies moved back into the community but had to deal with the hatred against them and also come to terms with what they'd done while they were zombies (ie killing and eating people).

It was a great examination of prejudice and... yeah, okay, this is going to be nothing like that.

LOL I was just going to say - that was an interesting and intelligent (if a bit depressing) film. I don't think that this will be that...

Oh, In The Flesh! That was a really good show. I wish there had been one more season.

This is not going to be that kind of show lol. If anything, it gives me iZombie vibes, which was kind of dumb but entertaining for a season or two.

And I just realised that I was referring to a film called The Cured, which is about cured zombies being reintegrated into society. I haven't seen In The Flesh, sounds like a foray for my rainy weekend.

Ah its the tall plank of wood! I thought it would've been really cute if he had reunited with Jo Yeo Jeong (I Need Romance) in You Cheat, You Die, since there both airing on KBS, and also both dramas are airing close together. If it nails the campiness, that'll be a good place to begin!

Also it seems like Tunnel the only drama of Choi Jin-hyuk's, that was well liked and put together judging by the reviews/admiration online. Everything else that he's been in has been meh city.

Also Korea rn is really milking that zombie trend? Which they have been doing a good job making it fresh, but I feel like it'll be like The Walking Dead in 3-5 years where audiences both get bored/tired so I say tread cautiously...

I thought he was really good in Tunnel, Justice, and Devilish joy.
In Rugal? Idk what happened. But I didn't like anything about that drama. Hope ZD goes well for him though. He kind of needs it at this point.

NOW I am sold! I was tired of watching him in roles which spelled agony with a capital A.

I am glad he has a fun role. When I initially read the news I expected it to be line Vampire Detective where the story is serious. This looks fun.

... it says it will debut in September 2020. I can't believe it will happen. For me, I told it will debut by 2021 if Covid-19 still not back into under control.
