2020 SBS Drama Awards

Namgoong Min

Last, but not least, SBS held the final awards ceremony of 2020. Shin Dong-yup returned to host, this time with Kim Yoo-jung joining him. The broadcaster had a very good year, with several ratings and critical hits. The star of one of its biggest successes, Namgoong Min, took home the Daesang for his work in the sports drama Stove League .

Namgoong Min played Baek Seung-soo, the general manager of an underdog baseball team who manages to lead a ragtag crew to victory. Stove League started off with ratings of 5.5% before hitting a peak of 19.1% over its run.

As he accepted his award, Namgoong Min shared that his first fixed role on a drama was with SBS (My Big Family, 2002) and stated, “I’m happy to receive such a major award [from SBS]. Every single person who worked on Stove League was precious and I’m grateful to the beautiful cast and crew who worked with me. Of all the dramas I’ve filmed so far in my career, I think Stove League was the most perfect.”

Before, it felt strange to see masked up, dolled up actors. But it’s definitely much stranger to see no masks knowing the pandemic isn’t under control yet. To be fair, there were masks on the red carpet but having a partial mask requirement seems to defeat the purpose. At any rate, I hope 2020 will be the only year masks are a necessity.

Congratulations to all the winners and check out the full list below.

Penthouse got 9 winners, the most awards it got on SBS Drama Awards! Good job, the Penthouse team like ratings did.

It was 30 years of SBS Drama Awards. But only the two hosts got facemasked. Good idea.

I can't believe how Namjoon Min earned his fifth SBS Drama Award winner. Look at him, he debuted on SBS drama two decades ago and of course, 18 years ago. He's now a veteran young actor as same as Uhm Ki-joon who won his SBS drama awards for the fourth time.

Gosh, my fave Kim Min-jae had his second and third SBS drama award winners. Great job for Kimand the Brahms family along with Park Eun-bin.

Congratulations to Namgoong Min. Stove League's awards were well-deserved. SBS definitely had the fiercest competition among all their hits despite the fact that Han Suk-kyu won the Daesang for the first season of Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. Penthouse sweep, but I feel sorry for Yoon Joo-hee for being the only Hera Palace parent to not win.

DYLB won Best Couple, no surprise there =) but still love that they won. Also it was great to watch KMJ play Traumerei for real. (Though they said performances were pre-recorded).

Odd to see "Excellence" and "The King: Eternal Monarch" in the same sentence. "Excellency" perhaps...

Lee Min-ho has never NOT won Top Excellence at the SBS Drama Awards: City Hunter, Faith, Heirs, Legend of the Blue Sea, and The King: Eternal Monarch. It's in his contract.

SBS out of the public channels employs a lot of movie stars/big name veterans out of the public channels. Congrats to Nam Goong Min, someone who started from the bottom to the top. Remember (2015) was a blessing to his career, and gave him the boost to reign top in drama land. From then on, every project he's chosen has been solid writing wise expect that rom-com he did. He has a good eye for projects, even Stove League would've not been made had he'd not called up the writer telling her he'll take part in the show (Every network turned it down/MBC said no b/c they thought it would flop since it had no romance/and it was about sports).

Kim Hye Soo would've been my other pick for the Daesang. Joo Won wasn't Daesang worthy, Kim Hee Sun who played multiple ages/roles would've my pick for it. Anyways, this just showed me that the dramas I enjoyed last yr were mostly from tvN lol.Now it they did their own ceremony, that would've top of the cream!! But I'm mostly glad that don't b/c there's way too many award shows now.

I too mostly watched TVN shows last year. I didnt know NGM did that. Stove League was a solid story and happy it got made.
I read somewhere on an interview that he learned form his past mistakes and changed his outlook on acting. He previously never wanted to accept roles if he is not the lead or something. I think his turning point was when he accepted the second lead role in Girl Who See Smells and accepted various roles after that to showcase his acting range. He is a really great actor.

Yeah, every other network said no to it b/c it was a drama about sports which for K-dramas was a new thing. Until NGM called up the writer, and said he would do it, then SBS picked it up. MBC's loss, I say!

It was an interview he did after Chief Kim, Drama-beans has the interview here! I read it too, and I think Remember's success in igniting his career lit a fire in him to do better. Yeah, I wish he would do more films, he said he turned down film offers which he later said he regretted. Alas, slow and steady wins the race. And he's engaged to be married as well, so his personal/professional life are going great :)

And also the other winners. I have yet to see Penthouse but maybe I will just skip it since I can only handle so much makjang.
I really like Stove League. He was really great in it and the story was interesting. I never thought I'd watch any show about baseball but I did for him. 😂

Loving all 4 youth/new actors and actresses! Jo Byeong-gyu and So Juyeon would make a cute couple for a rom-com, wouldn't they?

Stove League is the kind of drama that blows you away out of nowhere.

A sports drama with no romance but I’m so glad to have watched it upon Beanies’ recommendation. Namgoon Min has good eyes for quality projects and his acting/character is certainly the show’s anchor. Then Park Eun-bin is such a bright spark delivering her manager’s role in a most no non-sense and energetic manner. And Jo Byung-gyu is equally impressive as her side kick who goes on to be the lead of Uncanny Counter. And all the supporting characters have their episodic sub plots to go deeper into what and why they act the way they do.

It’s kind of funny when you look back that we have only one match on display midway the show, as opposed to showing the ‘after’ of this type of story. It is engaging from the beginning till end and I do want to know what NGM’s character does post-baseball.

And I know nothing about baseball before the show but get to learn a little as a result of the watch.

Congratulations, NGM!

I'm sorry, I'm having trouble figuring out who won what, so I'm just here for the frocks. In contrast to MBC, which had a lot of very classy but generally conventional dresses, SBS's selection is so much more exciting! Is Kim Seo-hyung's collar actually a torture device from jTBC, forcing her to pay tribute to her SKY Castle character? Did someone put Lee Sung-kyung's dress in the washing machine with a duster? Go Min-shi's dress is a lovely colour, but Scarlett O'Hara was so much better at getting a new outfit from some curtains.

Good choice of picture, NGM's style in Awaken is the best! :p I'm happy for him and all the cast of Stove League. It was a great drama even we knew nothing about baseball.

I'm happy for Park Eun Bin! She was great and showed her acting talent in Stove League and Do You Like Brahms, 2 very different characters but she nailed them.

Kim Yoo Jung was very good in Backstreet Rookie for the fighting scene or the emotional ones. I'm happy she won an award for it.

Lee Min Ho? Really? Woo Do Hwan deserved an award for both of his characters!

I'm so happy for Stove League. I love it so much. I did not know I would be interested in a drama about sport sans romance, but I was throughly invested it.

P.S. Park Eun Bin is so beautiful. Also happy about the Joonsong win.

Did they actually give a best actor and actress awards to Lee Min Ho and Backstreet Rookie? Seriously? How? Somebody please explain what excellence did they find in these shows.

really happy to see Park Eun Bin winning the award... and the joonsong couple award!

the quote from DYLB comes to mind, instead of getting 7-8 from all judges, how about getting a 10 from one or two and give them a performance they will never forget for life...

happy to see the actors getting recognition!

overall great year for SBS!

Park Eun-bin got a well deserved Top Actress Award for her role in DO YOU LIKE BRAHMS?. It was well deserved but to me the irony is that she could almost as easily received that same award for what she did in STOVE LEAGUE. She is a fabulous actress, one of my favorites.

And I am proud that the SBS drama awards did not back down from giving Kim Yoo-jung an excellence award for her stellar performance in BACKSTREET ROOKIE, even though there were people who chose to take offense at some elements in the show- none of which had anything to do with her or her performance- but rather was because the writers chose to be too faithful to the Manwha it was based upon. To them I would point out that the greatest American Opera is Gershwin's PORGY AND BESS. When it premiered there were puritanical complaints about it too, even though the novel that it was based upon had received great praise for those very same things. Should Gershwin have taken out the offensive parts? Today we are very happy that he did not.

Han Suk-kyu is a legend and he's always daesang worthy but it's nice to see some appreciation going for the younger actors even if they are not at his level yet.
