Drama viewership ratings for the week of Nov. 15-21, 2021

Let’s see how our new shows are faring, shall we? Early in the week, Idol: The Coup remained under 1 percent, while Secret Royal Inspector and Joy stayed strong. Also in this timeslot, The King’s Affection hit its highest rating with its twelfth episode.

Then, later in the week, Melancholia‘s numbers went down, and The Red Sleeve Cuff‘s went up. The Red Sleeve Cuff and Now, We Are Breaking Up are now in a super tight race, both getting around 7-8 percent. Overall, it seems like our sageuks are performing really well!

I usually get bored when Sageuks focus on familial conflicts and internal plotting, but face off between Crown Prince and The king in Ep 3 of Red Cuff of the Sleevewas so good. Deserving ratings so far.

NWABU have higher ratings than Happiness wow I'm surprised. I think Happiness deserve more ratings, it is well written and high budget drama and unique in itself. And lastly, both the leads are slaying their roles.

I wonder how it compares to Jirisan which is on the same network but has higher ratings. I personally agree that it seems underrated or people are sleeping on it!

Jirisan is in the best timeslot @sat-sun9pm with no competition whereas happiness (fri-sat 1040pm) is in overlapping competition with nwabu and red sleeve slated at fri-sat 955pm, and on sats with jtbc and ocn dramas (sat-sun 1030pm). Happiness’ timeslot is the crappiest and disavantaged timeslot of all. It also doesn’t help that it is airing simultaneously at tving with uncut version of the drama, hence viewers are divided. It happened to Yumi’s also, but without ocn drama.
Hopefully, with Bad and crazy, ratings will start to pick up at that timeslot because it is not a tving original unlike yumi’s and happiness.

I think Happiness is faring relatively well. Definitely deserves better but it’s not doing badly, IMO. Higher ratings than Yumi’s despite the less than ‘GP-friendly’ story and genre. And like mentioned, terrible timeslot with overlapping competition, and TVING is keeping full episodes to themselves while cutting several scenes from showing on tvN and other OTTs (so Knetz may prefer watching there).

Also, while buzz may not directly relate to ratings, Happiness has been the most talked about tvN drama for the last couple of weeks. And only Happiness’ leads made it to the top 10 for talked about actors in the latest report.

Jirisan still doing well, is it getting better? im still hesitant after reading some negative comments about the special effects and storyline.

despite the negative comments (at DB and elsewhere) I'm still watching it.
In my opinion, the storyline is good, the mystery is there, but when the story+mystery were executed into the show, it become less interesting, far from gripping. I don't know why.
so far, again my opinion, the most boring eps are ep 3, 7, 8. Gosh, not even my love for Kim Eun Hee+ 2JJH can prevent me from snoozfest for those episodes.
but still, I have a soft spot for the writer, who wrote my favourite mystery Sign (SBS, 2011), and I'm still hoping that she has it for Jirisan to get better next eps, so with that hope i'll continue watching it.

The ratings for YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN continue to rise. I am curious to se the effect of an amnesia arc- will some viewers be turned off?

When will this ridiculous trope be abandoned as even a cursory research should enable any writer to recognise that amnesia is in fact very rare in RL. I know, I know. RL is a foreign country to melos.

I FF on episode 18...it's so totally ridiculous. If they had to use amnesia, it should have begun and ended in a single episode. But this drama does have wacky characters, so the amnesia sets them up for total exposure. Better end by next weekend though.

I am no fan of the amnesia trope- at all. But, by briefly 'regressing' our ML to an age- 22- psychologically perhaps there is a dramatic purpose served? The age gap is a central question in this show- so by having our titular Gentleman briefly reduced to thinking he is actually younger that our Young Lady perhaps he gains some sort of perspective? The writer has done a good job so far so I am actually curious as to see if this time the amnesia will actually serve a real dramatic purpose. I thought that all that he would forget only the FL but here he has forgotten the children that he loves and also his deceased wife who was so dear to him. It is actually a much more believable case of amnesia than the much more convenient ones which we usually get in a kdrama.

I did not expect this given how much I am enjoying King's Affection but I think Red Sleeve Cuff is even better. I have not seen a performance by Lee Se-young this loose and natural, and I love the friendship between the apprentice court ladies. (Huh, I just realized that I don't use the word "ladies" much nowadays except when referencing sageuks). Based upon the character previews, I am just waiting for the other shoe to drop and Deuk-ro to show his true colors -- I am already invested enough fear for our OTP (at least as much fear as can be felt in light of known history.)

Chimera is surprisingly good so quite sad that the ratings are low.
The Red Sleeve and Secret Royal Inspector & Joy are my sageuks so I am glad to see they are both getting decent ratings.
I have to catch up on Idol, Happiness and Jirisan.

It demonstrates the value of star power: It is not the story but the ML and FL which draws the audience for NOW WE ARE BREAKING UP. (But not me- Song Hye-kyo is indeed beautiful but not one of my favorite actresses}

Spot on. I have seen a few of SHK’s performances and while she has been adequate in all of them, I have never been deeply moved or challenged by her acting. Hopefully, she is a nice person and that is one of the reasons she keeps getting work. Being beautiful and ageing slowly (by using any means available!) are also career enhancing.

I am really sympathetic to your point of view. As I can’t stand any of the neighbours except the little girl and feel sorry for the gym trainer so they as well as my liking for the leads means that I want to keep watching. I feel like the neighbours’ awfulness is deliberately amplified to make the claustrophobic situation more amplified and remind us of how we as individuals do get on each others’ nerves if we behave selfishly and/or callously. It has also made me think of two of my neighbours. They are selfish and awful people who constantly slam their doors, speak really loudly on their cells starting from the courtyard to their doors and just behave like immature jerks. They constantly interrupted my work from home during the lockdown. I didn’t want a confrontation with people with whom I hadvto share an outside common space and common walls so it has been an arduous exercise in endurance as I have continued to remind myself that this too shall hopefully pass.

The competition between The Red Sleeve and NWABU is a sad (or good?) example how a drama can't rely too much on big names (average qlty) actors with weak plot/writing.
I probably will get a lot of hate for this, but The Red Sleeve is too good to be on the similar rating with NWABU.

Good example. NWABU is turning into a dumpster fire. I will be glad if Red Sleeve breaks away and takes the lead. Sends signal to the industry that viewers ultimately would like substance.

I am making an exception since I generally don’t comment on dramas I am not watching. A couple thoughts on Jang Ki-yong now appearing in NWABU (which I am not watching). I became a JKY fan after watching his performance in CAHM. The only JKY dramas I have seen beside CAHM are KILL IT, GO BACK COUPLE and BEAUTIFUL MIND.

Ratings wide NWABU is so far the best average ratings drama that JKY has been in since GO BACK COUPLE (2017).

I'm watching this (NWABU) with several others of similar taste (not necessarily on DB) and we think he's doing very well in it. I really hope SHK's character evolves a bit more. I like him in this, but not so much her---but that's probably my own biases talking.

That’s funny because after ep 3 I thought, all this poor guy gets to do in this drama is stand around and stare “meaningfully”, I don’t think he said 20 words in the first 45 minutes. And I really like him so it feels like a big waste. Must admit, the show is quickly shaping up as a hate watch for me . . . just how badly do I want the Bean? 🤔

Now to two dramas I am watching the sageuks: tvn’sSECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR & JOY and MBC’sTHE RED SLEEVE.
In my mind I have a sort of Taec vs Junho horse race going on. The race is not an an even ‘track’ because among the variables its tvN (cable) vs MBC (terrestrial) thus Junho is the favorite.

So after 4 episodes if I am calling the race I would say:
“As we go into the first turn it is Junho in the lead by a head (about 2% to 2.5% lead in the ratings.)”
There are still 12 episodes to go. I will report after the next four episode when the guys are in the back stretch.

Can't say enough that I LOVE RED SLEEVE CUFF! Love the cheerful gossipy life of the court maids and court ladies and between them and the bubbly princesses, the sweet grandpa King that one time is caring and the other time is scary (typical grandpa attitude!), most of all the sweet adorable main couple!! I didn't know that it's based on real history story, I really hope it's happy ending.

It will have a relatively happy ending- as far as the times would permit. Remember that this is the middle of the 1700s, a time when life could be short and infant mortality very high (BTW- where are the guns? A real tiger hunt circa 1750 would absolutely not have relied upon bows). The real life story can best be described as bitter sweet but definitely not a tragedy in the dramatic sense.

Looking at the time slot too it is past prime time at 10:30 pm for Mon Tues. I think they are doing well for themselves. I have been watching thru Viki and the English subs have been slow, presumingly because of the lack of popularity.

Viki subbers are all volunteers (which is why they are often better at it as they tend to better understand the context). Even really popular shows can be slow to subtitle. It is more a matter of luck than anything else. Right now episode 5 is at 94%- almost time to watch it.

At first, I hated the the story twist in Young Lady and Gentleman. But now, I understand why it happened, it's to prouve that the heart never forget even though the brain does 💖. That's why I'm loving it. It's so new of an idea. Also I love how it didn't take much episodes to revive YK and DD's love 🥰. It seems YK starts to feel something again towards DD. That's why I'm so satisfied ☺.

The show has a wonderful way of underlining those moments when their souls are connecting: Once again, as our Gentlemen is persuading Dan Dan to stay, we hear the wonderful gravelly voice of Louis Armstrong singing. This music serves to remind us that at that moment our two leads are growing closer together.
