American TV show creator Adam Conover recently spilled insider information on how Netflix determines if a show is a “hit.” The platform has set up algorithms to track a show’s viewership under some strange criteria for producers and viewers. Netflix operates under a points system for producers. First, Netflix ranks as the highest positive score for the first show watched by a new subscriber or one who re-activates their account. Second, Netflix ranks highly if said viewer binges watches the series in one sitting. Third, Netflix ranks positively if the viewer finishes the series episodes within a week. If longer than a week, then the show starts to accumulate negative points. Or if a viewer does not finish the series, more negative points.

Basically, Conover, as a show runner, said Netflix is trying to force shorter series and shorter episode run times in order to meet the algorithm’s scoring system. But he concludes that there is a large segment of viewers who still like weekly shows (appointment viewing) and longer season episode counts so they can actually learn and care about the characters. He stated some of the most popular shows streaming (Friends, The Office and Seinfeld) took several seasons on regular TV to get a cult following.

Beginning in November, 2021,, Netflix now ranks its titles by the total number of hours viewed. Previously, Netflix measured a program's viewership based on the number of subscribers who watch at least two minutes of it, an approach that critics felt was too low a bar to measure the popularity of a program. This change is apparent if it is trying to get advertising contracts with some objective ratings. Still, how Netflix or other streamers “count” viewership cannot be readily confirmed to potential advertisers.

I am curious how the beanie levels are ranked. I've been in the site so long I still can't figure it out. Only the first levels like candy, jang geu rae I understand.
Not it matters much, but curiosity be damn.

@pohonphee
If you mean how as in "is there a meaning to the order and ranking of them?" Like "why THAT order", then as far as I know, no, the decision to put each level in the order they are is random.
The creators of it are no longer with dramabeans so if there is some secret to that I don't if the new staff would know or not.

As for what each level is or means- what drama it comes form or references - here is my glossary! It's not finished and I never work on it but it will probably interest you anyway:

If you mean "how does each level work in terms of levelling up etc"

Hi Kiara. I am approaching an unexpected spring hiatus with no Olympics or presidential election at hand. I have the last two episodes of AGAIN BY LIFE left (hanging in there for the bean) and I just started the jdrama ROKUHOUDOU COLORFUL DAYS (ten 25ish min eps.) and that is all I have going probably until later in June with the arrival (hopefully on Netflix ) of the Hong Sisters’ ALCHEMY OF SOULS and SIG’s CAFE MINAMDANG.
Maybe now is the time for me also to tackle LONGEST DAY (48 eps., oh my) on Viki. I don’t know.
If I chicken out I have my eye on the cdrama MEDICAL EXAMINER: DR. QIN (2016). The latest in the franchise (MEDICAL EXAMINER DR. QIN: THE MIND READER (2022)) is now available on Viki but the early reviews on MDL are fairly negative so I may go back to the original.
I recently enjoyed and finished the 12 episode jdrama mystery DON’T CALL IT MYSTERY. I hope Viki picks up more jdrama mysteries.
I am a bit behind on my upcoming sageuk watch list but I think tvN’s JOSEON PSYCHIATRIST YOO SE-POONG
(12 eps.) (Kim Min-jae, Kim Hyang-gi) (Aug.1-Sept. 6, 2022) may be the next one up. Once again hopefully it will be available for viewing on a legal site in the US. We were aced out on BLOODY HEART.

I'm filling the void by watching a wide variety of films across different genres and different countries. I just finished watching an indonesian comedy about a teenage boy whose good looks wreak havoc on his life (its stupid but hilarious).

Regarding older dramas, i do have a few on my list but none are compelling tbh.

Its hard when you have a run of decent dramas and then the tumbleweed is rolling as nothing new is appealing as a replacement. I felt like that after the golden era of 25,21, A Business Proposal, and thirty nine all finished I liked them to various degrees but I only had Friday with nothing to watch. What’s the last decent drama you watched? What genre do you like?

I have two Chinese dramas I loved this past year: Stealth Walker with Zheng Yi Cheng (Viki) and I loved loved Killer and Healer. It's only on YouTube (Mango tv) and it's a Republican Era.
Korean, very disappointed lately.
My obsession right now is an 18+ Thai drama "KinnPorsche". BL, Mafia, but the best production I've seen in a long while in any genre by any production company. A combination of comedy, action, emotion. Great writing, cinematography, filmed on location, acting, directing, you name it. Unfortunately it's VIP on IQIYI so you have to pay.

Thanks @linda-palapala for the cdrama tips and also the existence of MangoTV Drama on YouTube.
For one reason or another I passed on the current cycle of dramas (just finished TOMORROW and about to finish AGAIN MY LIFE) so I am in a kdrama hiatus until about the third week in June with the arrival on Netflix of the Hong Sisters’ ALCHEMY OF SOULS and SIG’s CAFE MINAMDANG.
I am in the mood for cdrama mysteries and just started MEDICAL EXAMINER: DR. QIN (2016) (Viki US).
Of your two recommendations I think I will start KILLER AND HEALER. A Republican Era mystery (with the 30s costumes and look) sounds good right now.

Don't know if you've tried currently airing cdrama "Heroes" on Tencent/WeTV. If you are in the mood for a potentially bad-ending jianghu/wuxia drama.

"Potentially" because it's set in the Song Dynasty when official corruption was rampant. It would be very tough for good guys to do right. Live comment spoilers indicate bad endings for almost everyone, good or bad. Although to not stray from history, some seriously bad people should live on. However, most cdramas are not known to be faithful to original novels. So...

According to social media posts, fight scenes apparently gets better after ep 8, where I stopped. Not quite Hong Kong wuxia back in the day but much better than most fighting within the past few years.

The older generation characters were interesting. The drama kills them off at a good pace.

The main reason that I stopped is I don't like any of the main female characters who are either the pouty-talentless type or the manipulative-conniving type.

I dropped it after ep 10.

Weakening the FL was the first "sin". Changing ML's worthy competitors to not worthy was the second. Spending too much time on ML's court intrigue was third. Taking away FL's crushes and long-time antagonism towards ML, which he completely deserved, made the plot too boring and predictable.

Not to mention the script might have plagiarized from cdrama "Royal Nirvana" when it added, on its own volition, the not-from-the-source court intrigue events.

It you like "anti power struggle court intrigue" bad ending drama with good acting, "Royal Nirvana" might be worth a look. Its fans have a high tolerance for frustration and depressing things.

I agree with you about female characters. One reason I liked Stealth Walker was the female cop was so well written, neither pouty nor conniving. She was strong and brave, yet loving.
My favorite female character in a costume drama is the actress who played the doctor and "love" interest (ha) in Nirvana in Fire 2 (can't remember her name it's been too long ago).
Too many female characters in c dramas these days are your pouty, bouncy or manipulative types. Like you, I can't watch those dramas.

In December I quit my job for my mental health. After almost 6 months of job searching I've quit seeking out a librarian position for my mental health. I've accepted a position teaching kindergarten at a private school in the Fall. I've found 64 webinars to watch over the summer and signed up for 3 summer long trainings (Elevate, Elevate phonics, and something about 5 days to PLAY for a play oriented classroom). My principal said these are good ones to have under my belt but my background is in English and Library Science.
Any of you Beanies have some advice for a newbie teacher? Especially one who knows nothing?

I am not a teacher but I have found that joining a psychotherapist community online has helped with making links with people with more experience and offer support. There must be an equivalent for kindergarten teachers online or in person that you can connect to before the term starts. I am sure there will be lots of ‘things I wish I knew before starting my post’ types of resources and checklists etc or short cuts to do certain tasks.

Also sites like the website Teachers Pay Teachers, have some great ready made resources free or very cheap.

I'm not sure what exactly you are searching for, but finding some support / inspirational groups may be indeed helpful (though if they would make you feel small and insufficient, get out of them 😉)

As a teacher of 5-7yrs-old kids, here is some general advice from my experience:
- don't expect that everything will go as you planned
- first weeks are usually for getting used to the rules and structure (structure is important!), don't have much higher ambitions
- have clear simple rules and be consequent
- be respectful (I highly recommend books by Elaine Mazlish and Adele Faber like How To Talk So Kids Will Listen... or How To Talk So Kids Can Learn)
- time put into creating good class relationships (some class-building activities) will definitely pay off
- be kind to yourself and don't try to be perfectionist
- don't forget to relax (and switch off), preferably with kdramas 😄

I will look into those books for sure! I'm still waiting for the principal to tell me what curriculum and pacing guide. I'm assuming that will help with a lot of my questions. But in general, I don't know what I'm looking for because I've never taught before. I feel like I won't know what I don't know until I'm in the classroom --but I feel like that's too late!

Ha, yes, that's exactly how it is 😄
I still remember my first class (2nd grade then) when I realised that the reality was totally different than what I had assumed (the actual knowledge and abilities of the kids included) and I had to completely rework my entire teaching plan 😄

Don't worry much though... be open and flexible... and keep positive thinking 🙂
(There is now other way how to become a good teacher than gaining experience year by year by actual teaching 😉)

Embracing the unexpected is a really good one! And being kind to yourself - I'm still working on that one, some days I feel like I'm the worst teacher ever. But everybody goes through the same problems, so finding people you can talk to and ask about stuff makes a world of difference. I'm a bit shy, so I have to force myself to do this one, but hanging out at the teacher's room is super helpful on a lot of different levels

Firstly, congratulations on your job! Working with young kids is a lot of fun. I find myself a better fit with older - elementary and middle school- kids, but this year I've been posted as an auxiliary teacher at kindergarten and learned loads of stuff. My tips are: put a lot of thinking into planning routines, activities and setting up the space. Try to observe more experienced teachers and don't be shy to copy their best tricks and to ask for their help. Prioritize having positive interactions with kids instead of focusing on inadequate behaviors, and don't take things personally when your beautiful planning doesn't work out. There will be crazy moments, there will be frustrating moments, and there will be really rewarding and sweet moments. Kids are awesome

I've taught for 35 years, mostly now at the University level, but for about 10 years at the 7-12 grade level. (In an interesting coincidence with your circumstances I also worked 5 years as a librarian/archivist.) I'm also annoyingly prolix, so I could fill pages and pages with teaching tips. But I'll restrain myself to 4 generalities that I hope will help.

Note that I have never taught students below 7th grade, so I can't help in terms of content/lesson plans. But as @reply1988 says, there are some fantastic Internet resources out there for that.

But here are the generalities:

1. First, keep in mind that EVERY teacher has good days and very bad days. When you have a great day--students are attentive, interactive, fun and you get the sense that you've really taught them something-- you will walk out totally exhilarated. When you have a bad day--student discipline problems that you handle wrong, you botch a lesson, or you have a parent come in and swear at you (that probably won't happen in kindergarten at a private school) -- you feel that you've made a terrible mistake to take the job. But remember, the students generally won't be as aware as you are about the ups and downs. So do your best to keep an even keel, trying of course to duplicate what made the good days so successful.

2. Be flexible. Understand that even the best lesson plans sometimes won't work, or technology will fail, or students will be unusually disruptive. If something unexpected happens, just try to achieve one of the goals that you set out for the day, and then let it go. Sometimes the unexpected is a disaster, other times it works out incredibly well.

3. This will be different in kindergarten, but one of the toughest things for a new teacher in handling a class day to day is maintaining a balance between an atmosphere that stresses authority/order/discipline and one that is friendly/informal/playful. You need some of both, of course, but generally you have to decide your comfort level, and what best fits the teaching persona you want to project. For me it was relaxed and at times silly, but of course at times I paid the price with some failed, rowdy classes. Others, very successful teachers, really ran tight classrooms, which at time were resented, but because they did it in caring way, were respected. I kind of feel either way is fine as long as you are comfortable with it.

4. Most important: retain your enthusiasm and affection for the students. This might seem obvious, but there are going to be times when you are tired, and the students are wild, and you'll (rightfully) say, these young wretches are so ungrateful, and I'm getting paid so little to deal with them! Still, if you remember the formative impact that you will have on all the children you encounter, and try to treat them with respect, showing them that you care, even as you have to yell at those who ignore you or talk back, you'll not only enjoy the...

@isa
Congrats on finally becoming your own drama’s FL ... also its writer, producer, cameraman, costume department, technician, child actors (students) management, marketing specialist ( you will need to get new students and parents sign up for your class), consumer (parent relationship) advocate; all in one. Yes. Being a kindergarten teacher is like running your own movie production. And the best part? You are in charge. Oh, I forgot, you will also become a mommy, the babysitter, family therapist, scientist, baker, cook, housekeeper, and a nurse practitioner - feeling their temperature with your hand, putting cute bandages on cuts and scratches of all sizes. Do you have any training as an actor? I hope you do, it helps to run the classroom the most. I had years of experience as a child actress on the stage before becoming a teacher. That was the most helpful experience for me in the classroom. That and my love and understanding for them. You absolutely don’t have to love them as their parents or grandparents do. No, that kind of love only gets in a way of an effective classroom management. The best teacher is a combination of a cool, but still authoritative, assertive and caring aunt and ... a Disney World greeter. Yes. All those fun, beloved kids movies’s characters in costumes that greet them at theme parks. Have you seen kids of all ages running to them to take pictures together and give them a loving hug? Now think about it. Wouldn’t you want your students to look at you the same way? How much knowledge and learning can you achieve while having their attentive eyes AND years hanging on your every word? A lot. Hey. I’m not telling you to get in some stuffy character costume and start dancing with kids. You will have some entertainers or field trips, guests scheduled for your class for that purpose during the year. No. I’m telling you to become as entertaining, kind and charismatic without a Disney character costume or a makeup. You will be fine as you are, without any special mask, if you find all that inside of your soul, and encompass your classroom (including yourself) in kindnesses akin of a Disney character and cool strictness of a loving aunt.

So develop as much charisma as possible in a short time (remember Mr. Gu’s line from MLN? “ lose weight in an hour and meet me on the bridge”? Yeah. That short of a time frame. Get a new haircut, buy cute, comfy clothes, shoes, like you want to impress your cheating husband and get him back. Yes. You will need all that to keep 20 + wandering eyes and short attention spans on you for at least 10 minutes of a circle time.
Some practical advice. The best in you situation as someone who never worked with young students. Your new school must have a summer camp. Or after school daycare. Sign up as a teacher’s assistant for 4-5 year olds class, you can do it just a few times a week shift, if you don’t work all summer. You will meet most of your future students, you will get to know the school and...

Congrats, and yeah, kindergartners are hard since so many of them are learning how to "school" for the first time. As others have said, structure, structure, structure. Have very clear places each child will sit (if they're at tables or clusters of desks color-coding them can help with everyday interactions - "Blue table come up and get your art supplies." "Green table line up for lunch." "Oh wow, look what a great job purple table is doing sitting quietly."). Also, with really young kids, master talking like Mr. Rogers - I found standing very still and talking slowly and calmly helped greatly - if you're too agitated or excited, even in a positive way, they tend to get really agitated and excited as well, and then you're herding squirrels (this was a really tough adjustment from working with teenagers where if I didn't come it with a lot of energy they zoned out). Good luck and I hope teaching goes well!

Congrats, @isthatacorner! I’m only speaking to you as someone who needs to hold the attention span of a 5 year old for 5-10 minutes, but try to look at all your students in the eyes at least once a day. You may pick up on something that’s there (good or bad). The eyes speak volumes and you might be the teacher that figures out if that child is being bullied, abused, or going through a rough time. Alternately, you might be one that he shows his precious rock he found on the way to school, or that he just learned to tie his shoe, or maybe she has a new baby brother at home. I’m sure you’ll be a natural. All the best!!!

Summer - slight drizzle or even a slight rain can turn things way more.

43 to 30 - you expect but below 20 at night time and that in summer.

scroll refrigerator - 1000$, 2000$, 3000$ - This is like monthly salary of majority of population and here what we have digital and water dispenser. middle income aka middle class buy this?

i3 11th vs. ryzen 5 - fighting which one to go for.

violence - always fault of violent games. blame anything. society never looks within. facemask abound. tears for media and then everything casual. though much respite for supreme court.

I'd happily rewatch Reply 1988 all over again but those darned movie-length episodes intimidate me. Perhaps it is possible to have too much of a good thing!

It’s probably that episode length that means we don’t get things left hanging which is where the other dramas that could have been good go wrong.

Had an emotional meltdown at work, because: life. So there I was, driving back home with swollen eyes when Spotify kicked in Evie's podcast and it was a bunch of people ranting about kdramas with stupid endings. Suddenly, I didn't feel so miserable anymore, and ended up having a laughing fit about love triangles featuring cats and robots. If anybody out there is having a bad day too, don't feel lonely 💚

Just listened to the podcast what an excellent episode I can see how it lifted the mood. Thanks for sharing the gift of hearing others dissecting the reasons why they hate the endings.

It looks like Evie will be on a break for a while so it’s great timing that we discovered the podcast now because we have time to catch up on the back episodes.

Hey everyone! I started watching I Need Romance and thought I would ask for some noona romance recommendations. One of my pet peeves of noona romances is when they try to “make up” the fact that the guy is younger by making him a chaebol heir, or he becomes a doctor (cough Witch’s Romance cough), etc. The fun in a noona romance for me is that the power dynamics are switched in many ways, with the female lead being older and more successful. It kind of spoils it for me when, in the end, the younger male lead ends up even being more successful than her. Does anyone have any recommendations for shows where this DOESN’T happen?

Doesn’t matter how old they are! My favorite noona romance OTP is probably Dal-ja’s Spring. While Tae-bong does have a successful past, he hates that part of his life and is entirely comfortable making a career change to a lower-paying, less prestigious field. A central theme of the show is Dal-ja always comparing herself to others and being obsessed with doing what society tells her she should do, who she should marry, etc, and the best part of the show is seeing her realize that what matters is what SHE wants, not what her friends or family think she “should” want. She’s older, has a more successful and lucrative career, and Tae-bong is fine with that—her competence and self-confidence in her job is what attracts him in the first place. That’s exactly what I want in a noona romance, and I’m wondering if there are shows with similar dynamics out there.

Any recs would be appreciated!!

This is an interesting topic and I realised when I googled it that I had seen a few of the classics.

I looked it up as a search because I wasn’t sure but couldn’t find any information on the age difference but I think the woman is older in Good doctor. They are both doctors in training she is his senior so I assume she is older not sure how much more. There is a mix of genres in this show. I discovered it recently as a recommendation and quite liked it.

Encounter there is definitely an age difference and status difference he doesn’t become more successful than her. This is a more straight forward romance.

I hear your voice the age and stage of life means he does not become more successful than her. This also has multiple genres.

I have no recommendations, since I'm sure you've seen all the ones that I have, but it strikes me that The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry and Search:WWW, although not technically pure romances, leave the older woman in a relatively successful place.

I like the noona romances for the same reason you do--the woman is portrayed in a more equal, even more powerful position than is usual.

What drives me crazy about them though, is not that the women gives up this position--even if the man becomes successful, the women generally keep their jobs and often don't even marry the younger guy. Its that the women often spend the whole show obsessing about the age difference.
When older men are romancing younger women in kdramas, sometimes they get teased by the younger woman but their worry about the age gap never becomes a main theme of the show, at least in the shows I've seen.

So its the noona's worry about the age gap that tends to undermine the message of women's strength and independence for me. Also, I have to admit, as someone older, I'm very sensitive to people treating age as handicap!

What's up, Fox meets your criteria and still is one of my favorites. First drama I watched where I truly understood the societal difficulties of a noona romance.

I can only remember the ones I didn't like lol - Something in the Rain, Temperature of Love, Sunbae..., Encounter, Now We're Breaking Up, Thirty-Nine, etc.

Would second I Can Hear Your Voice if you haven't seen it already. Another reasonably good one is Witch's Romance - becomes a bit melodramatic towards the end but the OTP and the lead's best friend are great.

I truly love Witch’s Romance and didn’t think his potentially-becoming-a-doctor in any way discounted her long career in journalism (although scandal journalism) or made her “lesser”.

everyone's recs are great, and I'm going to chip in with much older and outer while fitting your criteria (ML are not polished to look successful just to look in balance with the FL).
you might have watched these too, but you might want to check them if you haven't:
1. My Queen (Taiwan, 2009) starring Cherryl Yang and Ethan Ruan
2. Last Cinderella (Japan, 2013) starring Ryoko Shinohara and (RIP) Haruma Miura
3. Kyouwa Yaisha Yasumimasu/I'm taking the day off (Japan, 2014) starring Haruka Ayase and Sota Fukushi

From what I can vaguely remember, while these dramas have flaws, I really appreciated them for showing the younger male leads' quality character that attract the female lead (other than their hotness) or addressing age and non-age problems in the relationship quite equal. Hope the list helps!

Definitively Encounter would be the one.
The Chinese one: rational life is also a good example.

Cdrama—Find Yourself, I’m pretty sure she stays his boss throughout.

Kdrama—When the Camellia blooms. There is no difference in the levels of their employment or power and it’s not even really part of the plot.

I noticed a few days ago that KBS’s DEAR M is back on Viki US’s “Coming Soon” list. Perhaps TOMORROW’s Jade Emperor has sprung it from hell or purgatory or wherever it has been.
Supposedly it will begin airing in June in Japan on U-NEXT.

Two Cdrama FL I loved and one I hated
The one I loved were Qian Wei (Legally Romance) and Ning Meng (Master of my own).
I could not stand MLs of both dramas. For Legally Romance, it was delivery of actor and for Master of my own it’s the character of ML. I completed both dramas solely for leading ladies. Both were driven, smart and lovable. The major credit of this goes to Song Zu Er and Seven Tan. Both were lovely and charming.
The one I hated was FL of Romance of Hua Rong. The character was supposed as lively, carefree but it came off as someone with mental age of 5. I could not even finish first episode. Why writer think that lively equates as behaving like a toddler? What’s up with infantilizing a grown woman?

I like Seven Tan as Ning Meng, she didn't turn her character to be halpless, happy go lucky, immature heroine. And not one fiber in her that is overacting. Watching her is like watching someone via CCTV, just a person going through her daily life with its up and down. So I understand the hype about her while she doesn't have the conventional C actress beauty ie Reba, YangMi, ZLY.
Saddly Master of My Own loses its romance momentum and too focus on SFL and SML.

The film 'Broker' premiered at the Cannes film festival, got a 12 minute standing ovation. Bae Doona reunited with director Hirokazu Koreeda for the first time since 'Air Doll' thirteen years ago, and IU playing a single mother. Its anyone's guess when, where or how I'm going to get to see this film.

Read one critic's review which was positive but not okay with what he deemed an excess of heart. Off to find news articles - thanks for the heads-up.
I think Cannes audiences would give a standing O to a film of paint drying.

It’s been a pretty stressful week here - I was so worried when the Littlest one got covid that she was going to get really sick, and she was fine. Then this week she got some random other virus and all of a sudden we were in the emergency room. We had two nights in hospital and it just really sucked. It’s only the start of winter here 😭

On the bright side she is back to her normal bubbly self today. I’m feeling very grateful to all the doctors and nurses and the accessibility of medicines here.

There are a lot of super strength bugs going round at the moment so glad your precious one recovered well.

Same thing happened to my friend and they fobbed her off with tests and ‘we will see you in a week when the results come out,’ with a two year old that’s not an option any parent wants to be offered. She ended up in hospital the next day and thankfully made a speedy recovery too.
