Script reading for SBS’s upcoming legal drama One Dollar Lawyer

Script reading stills have been dropped for SBS’s upcoming action law drama One Dollar Lawyer, starring Namgoong Min (The Veil), Kim Ji-eun (Again My Life), Choi Dae-hoon (Insider), Lee Deok-hwa (Business Proposal), and Park Jin-woo (Military Prosecutor Doberman).

The drama promises to be a snappy courtroom flick centered around Namgoong Min’s character — Cheon Ji-hoon — a lawyer who fights the corrupt rich while only charging his clients 1,000 won (essentially $1) in legal fees. Notorious for taking on, and winning, David vs. Goliath cases, Ji-hoon is colorfully described as a lawyer with a sophisticated perm and the personality of a London back-alley gangster. Do I know what that means? No. Am I intrigued? Most definitely. He’s assisted by his secretary Sa Ma-jang — played by Park Jin-woo — who is the Watson to his Sherlock.

Working with him, or should I say against him in the courtroom, is prosecutor Baek Mari, played by Kim Ji-eun. As someone who comes from a long line of prestigious legal professionals, Mari is considered legal royalty. She’s poised and self-assured in the courtroom, but when she meets our wildly temperamental lawyer, her smooth career trajectory comes to a grinding halt.

Lee Deok-hwa plays Baek Hyun-moo, Mari’s grandfather and founder of the top law firm “Baek.” Amidst his success, Hyun-moo is a lawyer that leads by his heart. It’s his pathos-driven sense of justice that will have him pushing Mari toward Ji-hoon in the first place.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a legal drama without a power-hungry bad guy, which is where Choi Dae-hoon comes in as prosecutor Seo Min-hyuk. Hailing from another prestigious family of lawyers, Min-hyuk believes in playing the rich person game to get ahead: leveraging connections, getting into prestigious schools, and marrying rich. He’ll have his sights set on turning “Baek” into “Baek and Seo” by putting a ring on our female lead.

The rest of the cast includes names like Lee Chung-ah (Awaken), Gong Min-jung (Hometown Cha Cha Cha), Ha Sung-Kwang (From Now On, Showtime!), and Kim Chul-yoon (Military Prosecutor Doberman), among others.

With the writers Choi Soo-jin and Choi Chang-hwan (Heart Surgeons, Defendant) behind the script and PD Kim Jae-hyun directing, One Dollar Lawyer plans to air in the Friday-Saturday slot on SBS.

Watching this because of Namgoong Min. He picks good scripts 90% of the time (10% being Black Sun).

Also, how is Kim Ji Eun getting to be the FL in dramas with popular, good actors that will guarantee views? She's pretty but her acting is kind of stiff? Kind of reminds me of Jin Se Yeon, who's just all pretty with little bit of acting skills.

Oh she's just a total favorite! Can one explain a favorite? Not sure! XD I just like her edginess and also her career path -- she always picks interesting supporting roles for the most part. If you haven't seen VIP (with Jang Nara) it's a fantastic drama and Lee Chung-ah is the queen of supporting characters there. Between that and Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, that oughta do it for ya ;)

She was very famous for her role in the movie Temptation of Wolves with the very famous scene of the umbrella by Kang Dong-Won! I don't count anymore the parodies/tributes of this scene. The kiss scene was pretty famous too :p

She was the lead in Flower Boy Ramen Shop.

But she likes strong women roles like in Because This Is My First Life, VIP or Awaken.

@Kurama: I have been watching any online clips of “Temptation of Wolves” that I can find and want to see it badly but as usual to my frustration, can’t find it streaming on any accessible platform. Thanks again for introducing me to this gem. Now, if I can only find the whole film!

It's an old film now. The quality of the videos on internet are not very good.

But the umbrella scene is so famous, it's sad to not know the original movie.

It is really too bad that Kim Ji Eun will prevent me from watching this. I love Nam Goongmin and Lee Chung Ah, but she legit takes me out of every scene she is in.

Nam Goong-Min \o/

But why Kim Ji-Eun? They already acted together in The Veil and it wasn't a long time ago.

I have a theory they're a couple in real life, that's why she keeps getting added to his projects. This is pure make believe, of course, but it's the only rationale I can think of lol

Honestly, I was more nasty and thinking she has a sponsor... 🙄

He has had the same girlfriend for years. In my opinion, he just enjoys working with the same actors if he had a good time working with them before. It's important to get along with your colleagues on the set, since drama usually takes about 6 months to be shot, many hours a day.

Namgoong Min! I like his acting so much and he does look very cute in those glasses. Lacking knowledge of his older roles, I was a bit shocked to find out that he had done all this disturbing characters before Chief Kim demonstrated his wonderful comic timing. And, something interesting about his last and other names. His last name, ‘남궁’, is one of those rare Korean last names which is more than one syllable and interestingly, he has only ‘Min’ ‘민’ as his first name as opposed to most Koreans who have a first name and a generational one so his are cool and unusual.

I know some people might have not known the exchange rate of KRW to USD but I’d have liked if the translation had retained the original title, One Thousand Won Lawyer (천원짜리 변호사). Let people who don’t know learn something new. This is a KDrama so it is fitting to keep the original title and it is incongruous to have the ‘one dollar’ there.

I agree that sometimes keeping the original and then having an explanation in the subtitles works better than a complete loss of meaning.

This made me laugh out loud with flashbacks to the thread about hair styles interfering with viewing enjoyment to the extent one beanie had to cover the top half of the screen. I can’t remember who the beanie was (sorry if it’s you) but that one comment had me crying with laughter and even now just thinking about has made me cry with laughter again.

Not about perms but wanted to mention how rare it is for me to see a wig which has suited a character to a T. In Hotel Del Luna, Lee Taesun’s chronologically ancient character, Yeonwoo, wears a wig which is for all intents and purposes nothing special but he just looks so natural wearing and it suits the contours of his face so beautifully.

*raises hand sheepishly* That might have been me - it was in a discussion on someone's fanwall but I can't remember whose. I have definitely scrolled down to block the top part of the screen so I wouldn't have to see distracting Hair. I had trouble recognizing Namgoong Min in the photos above because he's sporting a handsomely styled, black, normal-looking 'do and the only thing I've seen him in is Chief Kim, where he had deliberately unflattering spiky dyed hair that I NEVER STOPPED NOTICING despite how much I loved the character. *shudder*

It was on someone’s fan wall so I caught it by chance and it was the best entertainment I had that day. It was the the level of outrage that hair and make up had been allowed to create a bad hair day and no one had challenged it.
Thank you for the laugh that day it’s the gift that keeps on giving as I am experiencing the same joy remembering it now. 🤣

Having naturally curly hair and having mildly suffered because if it throughout my life, I’m always game for mocking any and all perms. You are dead set right that a good perm is an oxymoron.

It depends on who is getting the perm. Non-black people getting a perm means curls, black people getting a perm means straight hair. So a good perm isn't an oxymoron. Also I will die on the hill that Lee Min Ho had the most fabulous perm in Boys Over Flowers, terrible terrible drama, but he had great hair.

Yep as a Black person you would be going for the ‘Sol glo’ type curly perm 🤣 from the film Coming to America. There were so many sections from that film that my brothers and I would reenact. It was a first in a long time to have so many black characters on the screen in so many different income streams. We loved it.

Why does it feel like this show and mostly Namgoong Min`s character has a "chief Kim"s vibe????
If so, I would love to watch it!!!!
If not.... Still, I think i will try to watch it, because Namgoong Min is very cool. I like him very much.
