The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 7-8

Our leading lady gets into all sorts of shenanigans at the hands of her kidnappers, as the king and his right hand man forge ahead in their mission to rescue her and investigate the kidnapping ring. And as the king will come to learn, sometimes, to convince a lady of his affections, a man needs more words than action.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 7-8

The fun is back this week, and boy did we have it in spades. Starting with the heroic rescue of the many ladies at the kidnapping den — from whom we learn that So-rang spent her brief time in custody haggling with the kidnappers over her selling price. She’s such a riot as a hostage, and I love her so much. But the operation ends up being a mini bust for Heon and Shin-won because So-rang and Hae-young have already been separated from the rest of the group before their arrival.

Fortunately, Hae-young is rescued after JA CHUN-SEOK (Yoon Jung-hoon), one of Shin-won’s men (with a big crush on Hae-young), trails her to the man she was sold to thanks to the pebbles she dropped Hansel and Gretel style. And this is how we confirm that the kidnapped women are indeed being trafficked as reluctant brides to creepy and perverted men.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 7-8

For So-rang, on the other hand, the adventures continue. She’s passed around from the kidnapping den to Lady Seo and Minister Jo’s hideout, and then to their henchmen for execution. But she ends up getting abducted from the henchman by bandits, and it’s starting to feel like she’s in her own version of Around Hanyang in a Single Night. Lol. Surprisingly enough, the bandits are all about rescuing kidnapped women, and settling them down in a village hidden in the mountains. So… righteous bandits? That’s a first. Heh.

As we come to learn, the head of the village (cameo by No Min-woo) lost his younger sister to the kidnapping ring, hence his sanctuary for rescued victims. The village also doubles as a lover’s paradise and accommodates young lovers who fled from the marriage ban. But since marriage is illegal and the village is Joseon’s best kept secret, they decide to keep So-rang for a few days to vet her identity so they can be sure she won’t reveal their secret.

Being a semi-hostage in the village doesn’t faze So-rang as she’s too busy being excited about the prospective clients she can make out of the young lovers. And it’s right there in the middle of her marriage compatibility sales pitch that Heon and Shin-won burst into the village — and get outnumbered by the bandits. Welp! It gets comically worse for Heon when So-rang offers him up as an eunuch who has the power to set up a marriage meeting between the bandits and palace maids, and I mean, he does have the power to do that, but not like this! LMAO!

Heon getting all riled up about the untrue story of his missing man-parts and Shin-won barely managing to restrain him never fails to crack me up. But the gig is soon up when the rest of the palace guards swarm in and Heon is revealed as king. To the quivering villagers, he decides to turn a blind eye to their “crime” of quasi-marriages after witnessing firsthand the happiness that love can bring to his citizens. He promises to lift the marriage ban within the year.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 7-8

Meanwhile, it’s already way into the next day, and with the king still outside the palace, Minister Jo assembles the other ministers to prepare for the worst. Yunno, since anything is possible outside the protective walls of the palace. Minister Jo would know this, considering he sends his henchmen — who are soundly defeated by the palace guards and the bandits — after Heon. And I’m baffled by how this man is still alive despite his many treasonous offenses against the king.

Anyway, as Minister Jo gleefully announces to the others that the king has vacated his throne, Heon arrives in all his full glory with a “One would think you couldn’t wait for my death.” Hehehe. In your face, Minister Jo! Heon then launches an official investigation into the kidnapping ring with Shin-won in the lead, and this makes Minister Jo and Lady Seo temporarily lick their wounds because the investigation is bad for business.

Okay, can we pause to talk about Heon’s arrival at the assembly in slo-mo and with the victorious music swelling in the background? Now that is how to make an entrance. Seriously, Heon spent way too much time blinding people with his radiance this week: from Hae-young to the villagers, and then to his ministers and attendants. But you’ll get zero complaints from me. The halo effect or not, Kim Young-dae is such a stunning man, and I’m a fan of the way his face is structured. Heh.

Truly, a man glows differently when he’s in love. And for Heon, the first step in admitting his feelings for So-rang is, well, denial. The second step: pulling her into his bathtub The Red Sleeve Cuff-style. Whoosh! Thud. Thud. There goes my heartbeat. The third step is a kiss — which doesn’t count because it’s more like a surprise attack. And I’m right there with So-rang when she says she doesn’t want it if he’s not sincere. I mean, how will she know that she’s the one the king loves — and not his late wife — if he won’t open his mouth to tell her?

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 7-8

Heon’s problem, on the other hand, is in the how to confess — because after seven long years of singlehood, his romantic cells are pretty rusty. But he’s forced to get the confession out on a romantic getaway at the summer palace after he learns that So-rang has applied to leave his service. Finally, we get a real kiss this time as he assures So-rang that he loves her, and she’s not anyone’s replacement. They’re all cute and lovey-dovey in the scenes that follow, and I could totally relate with the bashful attendants peeking at the couple from behind their hiding spot. Heh.

Heon and So-rang look so happy together, I could cry. But poor Shin-won is left to watch them from the sidelines, as giving up on So-rang doesn’t make it hurt any less. Shin-won plans to leave the king’s side after the trip, and Chun-seok is tasked with filling his absence. Unfortunately, Chun-seok has been forced over to the baddies’ side after Lady Seo threatened him with Hae-young, and it’s only a matter of minutes before Minister Jo’s assassins arrive with a poisoned needle aimed to take Shin-won out.

Chun-seok decides to protect Shin-won and he takes the hit instead. Oh no! And with his dying breath, he alerts Shin-won that the king is in danger. Shin-won rushes to warn the king, but he eventually gets struck in the shoulder by another needle, and collapses amidst Heon’s pleas for him to stay alive. For a few minutes there, I actually thought Shin-won died and I was ready to throw hands. I was so relieved when he turned up alive after all. Phew!

But losing the love of his life, his trusted subordinate, and the use of his arm — no thanks to the poison — in a single day is wild! How much misery can a person endure before reaching their breaking point? Shin-won ends up breaking his friendship with So-rang as he leaves the palace, and all of this is starting to look like his villain origin story. “I don’t have the ability to protect anyone now.” Sigh. Not this show trying to take away his self-confidence too.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 7-8

Really, Show? You couldn’t just give us the “welcome back from hiatus” gift of a full week of uninterrupted fun. You had to kill a minor character we liked, and then strike our second male lead with paralysis in one arm. Basically, almost souring all the feels we got from the cute moments earlier on. Ugh! Yes, Minister Jo and Lady Seo are evilly meant for each other, but the problem is they give off villain cosplay vibes rather than feel like real threats in the show. Their villainy seems totally pointless, and it’s almost like they exist because having baddies is a drama requirement and not necessarily because the plot needs them.

Even the dowager that I thought was one of the most unproblematic ones in dramaland has joined the league of meddling dowagers. What’s with her asking So-rang if she’s going to be a stumbling block or a stepping stone in the queen selection process? Pfft. My girl is going to be the queen and anyone who has a problem with that can take it up with the king. His Majesty has fallen in love again, and he’ll be damned if he allows those pesky little villains to put his woman in harm’s way this time.

Pretty bland actually compared to a certain other show this weekend. No opinion on the lead's chemistry here, but they lack alchemy.

Same here episode 8 was completely bland. The only thing that made this week watchable are the scenes with the villagers.

The back-half of Ep. 8 took such a sharp turn I was left speechless. Here I was still cackling about Kim Young-dae being labelled a eunuch in yet another show and then bam - murder, poison, separation 😭.

Please don't stop being funny show and do get our SML out of his funk soon. I refuse to believe he'll go dark side so don't waste time on it - just gives us hilarity and kisses!

Yes, this show is no longer enjoyable if they turned dark, revenge, and political schemes. More scenes of our bubbly heroine and childish fights between Heon and Shin-won, please.

I really thought they killed Shin Won, I said that is savage and dark show. Then they did all that other stuff and all I could think is why didn't they kill him. Just terrible, lol. At least we still have So Rang because she is the saving grace for this show.

This! “My girl is going to be the queen . . . “! @unit, yaas! High five. ✋🏼
I loved all the campiness surrounding Heon’s glowing face. I also loved the flowers and fireworks and the battle plan chart to romance was fun. But I knew it wouldn’t last.
Chun-seok’s death scene was heartbreaking. When he told Shin-won he was his family. I was glad I was home alone and could ugly cry. Then when Heon found Shin-won more tears. While I’m glad the show let Shin-won live, did they have to strip the poor guy of everything? That’s called existing, not living.
I don’t know where the show will go from here, but please, find a miracle cure for Shin-won’s paralysis and let’s get back to the fun!

Like, Chun Sook, you tell Shin Won that the bad guys are Minister Jo and Lady Seo.
Shin Won, you tell Heon who So Rang really is! Oh, and also who the bad guys are.
Sheeeeesh.

Include me in on Team Shin-won. For some reason your comment brought this to mind.

O/T. In the American series THE FUGITIVE (1963-67) the one armed guy was the baddie the good guy (the fugitive) chased all over to clear his name. 78 million viewers tuned in for the final episode.

Hum...

I'm not fan of the couple. We really could see the King falling in love with So-Rang but not her falling with the King. She lied so many times that honestly now it doesn't work for me. So-Rang is fun to watch when she uses her antics but in love mode, she's kinda bland.

Poor Shin-Won! I was happy he was leaving the Palace, he deserves to be happy too! But not like this...

There was a cameo by No Min-woo and his brother, I'll (No Jeong-hun), singer in the band Hoppipolla!

I loved the village sequence with the stunning cameo of No Min-woo who I have really missed since My girlfriend is a gumiho. That was the most effective way for Heon to see for himself how the seven-year marriage ban has affected the people who only wished to live happily with their beloved ones. In the eyes of the law, they might be criminals but they actually did nothing wrong whatsoever and that is why Heon told the guards to leave them alone. There are no lawbreakers here. Before he left though, Heon promised to lift the marriage ban within the year which I really hope he could achieve sooner than later by marrying So-rang and making her the queen.
My heart aches for Shin-won though. He could have been So-rang's husband for seven years now. They could even have a baby by now but evil people's greed stole that happiness. Be it, minister Jo who probably killed the crown princess, or lady Seo who attempted to kill So-rang, they are the ones responsible for this draggy marriage ban.
I also strongly agree with you @unit I don't understand why minister Jo and lady Seo exist in the drama. As if having a villain is mandatory for Kdramas. Lady Seo, the so-called woman stuck at home, is now playing the dowager in her hands and could easily make her evil daughter a queen if Heon was a pushover! Minister Jo is really rude and has committed several crimes so how can he remain unscathed? The evil duo's arrogance is over the top as if they were the king and the queen of the country. Instead of being interesting characters serving as a real threat, they are caricature figures who exist to infuriate us and just win for the sake of winning.

"The evil duo's arrogance is over the top." I could not agree more. Furthermore, if the translation is correct, it infuriates me every time "Lady" Seo refers to So-rang by calling her the B word. No, "madam," that's you.

I was fast forwarding through so much of episode 7 because of Minister annoying and Lady why are you here, that I decided to pause and will catch up with a binge watch on my return from my holiday in a couple of weeks. I am so over fun shows being ruined by unnecessary darkness. Who was the perverse man cutting off the women’s hair before he did away with them why do we need a character like him?
Glad to hear the main couple are finally together looking forward to seeing how this progresses when I am able to binge it.

I totally agree, either have no villains or make them just as camp and fun as the the leads. I don’t mind Lady Seo tho, at least she is pretty to look at (yes, I’m shallow)

I haven’t finished watching episode 8 yet, but I’m not feeling King Heon’s and So-rang’s chemistry. Don’t mind if Shin-won turns evil tho, at least we’ll have an interesting villain for once. But from what I’m reading it seems he is paralysed and yeah the disabled/ disfigured villain trope needs to die

When I saw the previews last week I thought "Is that No Min-woo?!" and I was right. I never get tired of seeing him. And then he had his brother, singer I'll, with him (at least I think that was his brother). How cool is that? But to the Queen Dowager I say "Piss Off!" and can a crocodile come and eat Minister Jo and Lady Seo already?! And eat her daughter too. So we can get back to the FUN!!! And find a cure for Shin-won's arm, that's very important.

Poor Shin-won :*(

My initial enjoyment is being chipped away, episode by episode. I'm really grateful for the recap to help me remember what I've watched, and I may have to finish out this drama by reading the recaps.

The drama excels with a cheerful, energetic, yet lush romantic vibe, but with each episode, I can see why the king would like Sorang, but I just don't get Sorang's feelings for the king. Sure he's cute. Why not get a dog instead? I really like Kim Young-dae, so I'm bummed that his character here is so uninteresting.

And it was quite a jump to make being out for the night during your average day at the palace=vacating the throne.
And did they kill off Chun-Seok just because they couldn't decide which guy to set Haeyoung up with?

I'm glad you noted that Ban Ran-tan (Valentine?) was a cameo by No Min-woo. When the episode aired, I couldn't find any info on who Ban Ran-tan was. I was wondering why he caught my attention. Him being No Min-woo explains it.

How can you say that the evil minister and the evil step-mother are not necessary to the show?
It was the evil minister who had the princess killed (thus starting the problems for the king, the marriage ban etc.)
and it was the evil stepmother who tried to kill our heroine, starting her off on a journey of wanderings that led her to meet the king. And also causing Sin Won's marriage to be stopped. The marriage ban also stopped it, which was because of the evil minister killing the princess.
I mean, the whole story wouldn't exist without the actions of those two people. And you say they're useless?

Much as I liked this show's first few episodes, I find myself fast forwarding a lot of scenes now except the funny ones, esp So-rang's antics and the shining effects on the king's face and the reaction of chief secretary and chief eunuch. Which means that I might as well drop this show now as my remote may not be able to handle it. Great premise, unsustained.

A bit late to the party, but I just got caught up! There's a lot about this I really love - the old-school fusion sageuk vibes, with a modern (and surprisingly raunchy!) twist - it's been a really fun watch, and a long time since I've laughed out loud this much during a drama. The female lead's a riot, and the male lead wants to believe he's cool and badass (and granted, he has his moments) but mostly he's a giant dork, and I love them both.

Personally, any SLS I had for Shin Won died around episode 3 - way too much wrist-grabbing and dragging the FL around - which I physically cringe at this point when I see it. But I still wanted a happy ending for him, so this last episode was pretty depressing. Poor guy can't catch a break.

As for the romance, I like them together and am rooting for them, but while I get where the FL is in wanting to be sure he's sincere... it rings hollow since she deceived him in the beginning, and even paid others to lie to him, about the very thing he struggled through in order to be able to love her. Until that's out in the open and dealt with, I can't get on board 100% - plus, I'm worried about how much melodrama the show's going to milk out of it once it's revealed.

So having finished all of episode eight of The Forbidden Marriage, I can definitively say…
yeah that sucked bro…

I mean props to TFM for least managing to kill off a character (unlike a certain recent drama…)

But I still standby with my initial verdict Heon & So-rang have no chemistry. Oh yeah for sure I get Heon’s attraction to So-rang (I’m also attracted to her mate), but So-rang’s attraction to Heon makes no sense to me.

Part of it is that Heon still doesn’t know that So-rang conned him and that Heon’s always saying the most unromantic shit like a lady’s maid is a King’s woman which is just a gross way to display his affection? He is basically telling her she has no choice in the matter? Not cool bro

Anyway let’s get to my favourite sad boy Shin-won, this episode really screwed him over. He loses his subordinate, his arm and So-rang 😭

I need a montage of his healing asap, nope I take it back I don’t want him to be the villain but I would like a voice over of his journey of finding himself again. Feeling lost and miserable to eat praying love back to himself again. I would definitely read his memoir 😉

Four more episode to go! Let’s see how this all ends…
