Demons are out for blood as Island concludes its run

TVING’s promotional rollout for the second half of Island has begun with a flashy teaser with shots of our returning cast: Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, Cha Eun-woo, and Sung-joon.

When we last left our demon-hunting pseudo-priest crew, we had only started to scratch the surface of the demonic underbelly of Jeju island. The concluding half of the drama promises to pick up where we left off while also delving deeper into the backstories of our three heroes: Ban (Kim Nam-gil) the demon hunter, Won Mi-ho/Won-jeong (Lee Da-hee) the high school teacher with a mysterious link to the demon realm, and Yo-han (Cha Eun-woo), everyone’s favorite hip-hop loving priest. We’ll also learn more about Ban’s connection to the Taejangjong monastery and his former co-demon hunter turned baddie Goong-tan (Sung Joon).

The teaser opens on some flashback scenes: monks clothed in white, close-ups of Ban and Goong-tan looking exhausted, and Won-jeong performing some kind of spell. We then see present-day Yo-han looking extra broody and ready for violence, and end on some interspersed shots of demon rampages, Goong-tan forcing Ban to stab someone, and a bloody Yo-han in the arms of Ban, all while Ban asks Won-jeong in the voiceover: “Did you really mean to kill us?”

Not sure yet how I feel about the drama splitting up its run like this, but streamers have recently started employing this tactic to keep people hooked on their service for longer. On one hand, it can combine the best parts of both the binge-able season drop and tension-amping serial release, but on the other hand, it can sometimes leave you with two tonally disjointed halves without much connective tissue. In this case, I’m really hoping that Island’s campier style doesn’t get erased in the second act in favor of a darker tone.

With director Park Bae-jong (Fabricated City) and writer Jang Yoon-mi (Jinxed at First) at the helm, Part 2 of Island will premiere on TVING on February 24.

I know most people have written this show off, but I had loads of fun watching the first half and am pretty confident I'll have loads of fun watching the second.

We really need a hero to exorcise/slay to split-shows-in-two demons that have overrun kdramaland.

Then for an encore they can take a show at the bad-costume demons.

yes, im still peeved they decided to split the show into 2. it totally kills the momentum for me (ahem The Glory ahem)
its equivalent to someone telling you a story then just stopping, leaving you hanging & confused but when they come back to finish you either forgot what they were talking about or you're just not bothered anymore.

ffs I didn't even know Island was splitting into 2 till i went on twitter and saw a post about it.
production companies need to know that certain shows do not need to be split in to 2 parts.

nonetheless id still be tuning in in hopes that Kim Nam gil would do more main charactering than just brooding in the dark mf

I also missed the memo about Island getting split in two. So, I watched the last 2 episodes of the first half expecting the story to carry on the following week... Gutted doesn't even begin to describe my feelings when I finally realised!

I wonder if the reasons shows have been getting split into two parts is to aid the writers and production teams. It's been said that dramas tend to start off strong and lag off towards the end so maybe they end one part where it might start lagging and start part 2 with renewed perspective, energy, motivation, etc.

I like this theory and it does make sense as the stress of meeting deadlines etc. week in and out must get to the cast and crew. The schedules add a lot of stress to the actors with the long hours etc and impact on other projects. But I think maybe filming it in two halves works for quality of life for the staff but for viewings they should schedule to show it when it is finished so we watch it as if it was one rather than two part project. That would be a win win for all and avoid the annoyance of being left hanging for months in between. Yes, I am looking at you, Yumi’s cells 2. I made the decision not to start Poong part 2 as I am going to binge it when it finishes airing. Having got out of the habit of weekly watching with the unwanted gap, I am quite happy to wait.

Ha, I knew something was sus with Van killing Wonjeong in the past! Part1 tried WAY too hard to convince us that he did in a moment of a demonic insanity and there was no other reason at all. Add to it how weird and guarded he acts around Miho...

Father Hallyu looks sick, depressed and not-so-swag anymore. If CEW can keep up with such character development, it's gonna be huge milestone in his career. Critically, I mean.

Miho is nowhere to be seen. Lol, did drama gave up on even TRYING to make her a proper main character and not just walking plot device?

I would have loved to form my own opinion about this drama, but part 1 is not available anymore from effin Amazon Prime.

This annoys me to no end!

😮 It's definitely still on Amazon Prime in the US - I just checked. I don't know how to look for other regions, but I remember several beanies had trouble finding it via Prime's search function even though it was there.
