Premiere Watch: Joseon Attorney

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Sageuk, romance, legal
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: In what is turning into a veritable season of sageuk, our next one to land is Joseon Attorney. The drama’s English title was recently bestowed an awkward but meaningful subtitle as well (which we’re ignoring but I’ll reference here): “A Morality.” Despite the proven fact that one can’t really judge a drama’s tone or quality from its promotional material, I will say that this one gives off very promising vibes. More than a story of subterfuge and palace politicking, Joseon Attorney looks like it will widen its perspective and, in looking at justice for the common man, will also take our hero on a journey of discovering true morality. Hence the subtitle. Of course, this is all conjecture and hopeful thinking until we see our breaking-the-mold attorney and princess duo in action.

TL;DR: Woo Do-hwan, Bona, Cha Hak-yeon, Joseon adventures in justice

@missvictrix: Since, sadly some of us will be unable to access this, would you be able to write longer weecaps and include more pics? Thank you.

I am hopeful that by the end of the weekend episodes we will know if it is more of the usual or if we can finally get a period drama that is a fun light hearted watch where nobody dies.

Why Friday-Saturday? I need drama during the week!

MBC is probably confident enough to stick it in the most competitive weekend time slot. I want to be optimistic, but Idk.

SBS is doing pretty well.

But it's just more I would like they spread dramas over the whole week and not only on 3 days. I watch them in the train on my way to work.

I'm casually optimistic it'll do better than Kkokdu at the very least.

WOO. DO. HWAN.

I usually don't watch multiple sageuks at the same time, maybe confusing..... but can't miss this!

Joseon Lawyer sounds better than Joseon Attorney? Ah well. xD

I don’t know what to expect anymore from today’s sageuks.

We may have to wait until later this year for a pure historical (daeha) drama in KBS’s THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR.

Meanwhile I have put OUR BLOOMING YOUTH on hold to concentrate on WDH’s JOSEON ATTORNEY (Viki US). I am declining to add ‘: A MORALITY’ to the title. I will return to OBY later in the year to claim my bean.

PS. After OBY (with 2) I would just as well not have to deal again with a character of a woman disguised as a man because frankly in OBY I have not been able to suspend disbelief but maybe it will be pulled off better here.

Well its fair to say they packed a lot into episode one and didn’t make it easy to like the male lead’s character even with explanations he is out of order. They also stated loud and clear that Palace politics will be ALL OVER this drama😡

She's a princess, did we really think that there won't be Palace politcs?

It’s the ALL OVER that is frustrating. Chief Kim was all about office politics but it had humour, friendship and hopes and dreams. Something in the rain was toxic in the office and at home so there was no relief apart from the early stages of the romance so it was a less enjoyable watch.

I’m okay with palace politics if it’s presented in a creative way or from a different angle than the usual sageuk. I’m tired of the stereotypical scheming ministers, imperious Dowager Queens, nobly idealistic Crown Princes, and hand-wringing eunuchs. I hope Joseon Lawyer avoids these cookie-cutter tropes and gives us something fresh and original, à la Under the Queen’s Umbrella.

That being said, I will NOT be pleased if we get a Woo Do-Hwan drama that’s all politics and no romance.…

(I haven’t watched episode one yet.) My understanding was that this would be part revenge drama for WDH’s character.
I hope @reply1988 you can give it another episode or two before pulling the rip cord.

It’s definitely got the revenge element on the table, and I felt for the puppet king. I don’t get just how powerless the King is portrayed in so many dramas they literally have no control when it comes to handling their ministers.

My region’s Viki has just listed this in the ‘coming soon’ section! Note to self: You might have to wait for a loooong time as Viki’s ‘coming soon’ at times is indeterminate. But I’m still happy!

if you're aussie (which I think from vague memory you are!) - if you click on the episodes tab for the show it actually says ep 1 'available today' which has me hopeful that it will indeed be sometime today!!

I'm happy for you! This feels like a proper 'event drama' of sorts for us beanies and it would've been unfortunate if some of us had to skip it for access issues.

It’s just the translation process, it will be available later today. That happened with me with a couple of dramas where it came out a day after other sites but mostly the delay isn’t too long. It’s worth the wait for the quality of the subs. I just wanted to sneak in early to see if I had finally found a sageuk I could watch without raised blood pressure from the ministers winding me up.
