Would You Rather #14

In dramaland, leading ladies often find themselves torn between the love of two equally attractive men — a choice none of us would want to make! But what if you did have to pick between the frustrating lawyer and the adorkable police officer? In this weekly feature, we ask you to make the difficult decisions — and we aren’t limiting our options to dreamy oppas.

Vote via the poll and feel free to use the comments to explain exactly how you were able to choose! So, Beanies:

WOULD YOU RATHER #13: RESULTS

Would You Rather has returned after a brief hiatus! In case the wait was too long for you, let me remind you that our last poll pitted life in a video game against life in a manhwa, and the results were our most decisive yet! A whopping 84% of you chose life in a manhwa!

Sure, maybe my verb selection of “trapped” versus “live” made the choice easy for some of you (@kurama), but, as @gikata and @miky88 pointed out, being “trapped” in a video game also implies the possibility of escape. A manhwa life is, well, for eternity — or until the writer stops creating new stories for you to be reincarnated into. At least, I assume that’s how it would work? (The Extraordinary You universe was a bit hard to wrap my brain around.)

But, ultimately most of you chose to be a manhwa character because being trapped in an AR video game a la Memories of the Alhambra poses more danger — assuming the author of your manhwa isn’t out to kill you — without the option of being reincarnated as new character. Instead, a video game promises action, battles, and a finite death should you fail to meet your objective. I’m with @kate88hammond on this one: I’d rather live out life in a manhwa than end up “a pile of sand.”

Having seen neither of these dramas (or any gumiho dramas at all... I need to get on this), I have to choose entirely based on the theoretical situation and not how it played out in either of these two drama examples. SO, it's got to be gumiho for me. A roommate is a roommate - you can always have mutual agreements, they will help you pay rent, and you can move out if things don't end up working. If they happen to be a supernatural being? That's fine by me as long as they do their dishes.

With a housecat: first of all, you have to live with a cat, which I and my houseplants have proven ourselves unable to do. You'd also have to deal with the fact that something that used to be (presumably) a beloved pet that you took care of (including cleaning up its poo) is now a person. What if you let it sleep in your bed? And now it's a human man? Creepy.

I can't answer this properly because I have not watched the gumiho's drama yet.
So I'll keep reading what other beanies say.

Pd: if a pet (cat, dog, bird, fish turtle or even silkworm) turned into someone as gorgeous as Kim Myung Soo, I would thanks the Heavens forever.

Most of the previous Would You Rather's got big nopes from for both choices. Now I'm having a hard time choosing. I'm a bona fide cat lady - I have 9 - so that choice is really tempting. As for a gumiho...wasn't a big fan of the Roommate drama and don't find that actor appealing. HOWEVER, if we're talking Lee Dong Wook as a gumiho, that's a whole 'nother ball game. LDW for the win!

Or Shin Min Ah. Lee Dong Wook or Shin Min Ah. Or both. This is getting complicated.

The choice is sharing space with a aloof and annoying cat man (I disliked MEOW THE SECRET BOY) or having a beautiful female predator. The latter has many variations, but traditionally a gumiho is a creature from Korean mythology that is almost always a female who can shape-shift into a beautiful woman. Most of the time, gumihos are considered evil, especially in more modern myths, because they transform into women so that they can seduce men and prey, and later eat their heart or liver. It is believed that a fox turns into a gumiho after living for 1000 years, and gumihos are the only foxes to kill humans with their bare hands. At the very least, it would be more interesting to live with a fox especially since there is a possibility she would transform into an uncanny human after a 1000 years of acquired knowledge. (Some tales say that if a gumiho abstains from killing and eating humans for a thousand years, it can become a full human.)

When my cat makes himself comfortable on my lap, he first twists and turns for a long time, holding his rear end in my face. Honestly, I wouldn't be thrilled if he suddenly turned into a man.
So the choice is a gumiho as a roommate.

I'll take a Gumiho anytime any day. As @anne18 pointed out, I need someone with unmatched strength as I am of a weak heart.

But there's a clause, the Gumiho must have gotten its liver nor should it need one in a hundred years.

Gumiho for me. I live with a male cat who … putting it nicely, has a strong personality. Him in human form is something I would run away from! 😼

I'm a cat person, but the question specifies that the cat turns into a MAN, not just "person" or "hot romantic lead". So I'll take my chances with the gumiho and hope I get a "fox".

Whoops. Hoping for a "fox" was too vague. I'd settle for Kang Han-na, who is presumably waiting on the sidelines while the rest of you are bidding on Jang Ki-Yong.

But at my age a good housekeeper might be more valuable.

Good Sir, I choose Kang Han-na over Jang Ki-yong any day! I couldn’t understand why the two male leads were fawning over Suzy’s character instead of Kang Han-na in Start Up…
I mean just look at her!
Now I second guessing my choice…
Kang Han-na or cat human?
Yeah no competition, Kang Han-na all the way!
I wouldn’t even mind if she eats me

I am a scaredy cat but a gumiho turning into a handsome charming man sounds tempting.

We have our adorable but cheeky little golden puppy. We take him to doggy day care sometimes to interact with other pups, so I always wonder what his day’s like, who he made friends with etc

If he turned into a human child I could interact with him more and actually know what he is thinking (I’m guessing it’s usually about food lol)

But I don’t have a cat, and no thanks I’m not a furry either. But then I don’t want to be eaten by gumiho, tho I’m a woman so I wouldn’t be eaten right? According to the classical myths & legends?

I haven’t watched either drama but I guess I choose the cat human, no romance but we can be friends and laze about all day

I’m allergic to cats (would I be allergic to a man that used to be a cat?) and I’m irrationally petrified of foxes. So I choose taking antihistamines over living in fear.

I didn't even think about this, but now I desperately want to know the answer. Would you also be allergic to a man who used to be a cat? Allow me to overthink about this for a sec.

I guess it depends on the nature of the transformation? A person could be allergic to proteins in the cat's skin or saliva (or urine, but lets just not), so would they produce these same proteins if they turned into humans? It seems like there are two possible scenarios: 1. the cat-turned-man is an actual man who is fully human with real human DNA and everything and no longer makes the proteins that cause the allergies or 2. The cat-turned-man looks like a man but is still essentially a cat, so the cat cells would just rearrange themselves to be human-shaped (and presumably shift to have more human characteristics), in which case he would still make the proteins and therefore trigger the allergy.

I don't know if there are clues in this drama about which one it probably is, so now I'm hoping someone who has actually seen it can weigh in and help me out. Does he switch back and forth? That would seem to suggest he might have retained his essential catness (not to be confused with Katniss). Was he transformed by some outside supernatural being? That would make me lean a bit more in the actual-man-direction.

This is honestly amazing!!😅 And this is why beaniedom (not to be confused with Benidorm) is the best place ever. I will await further enlightenment from fellow beanies!🤓

In the drama the other ML (who is not a cat) is allergic to cats and he sneezes even when the cat turned into man is next to him. There is no explanation. Maybe the cat-man still has some cat fur on the clothes 😅

Thank you for this additional info - antihistamines it is!🤣 I feel like this could be the premise of a drama, although it would be impossible to do it better than I Am Not A Robot (in my opinion). It also leads me to wonder, what happens when someone who loves and owns cats falls in love with someone with a severe cat allergy? This can’t be that uncommon - what do they do?!🤷🏻‍♀️

I think it depends how allergic the person is - for some people it's incredibly severe. If it's milder (I have a friend who is mildly allergic to his wife's dog, who was there before him), then you can manage it with allergy meds and frequent cleaning/dusting and careful grooming. If it's more severe though, I think it results in difficult conversations and decisions.

4

@jls943 those would be very difficult conversations and decisions 😢…but as you say, there’s no way around it if the allergy is severe. I guess if you could afford it, you’d keep separate homes and only ever stay together in one of the them on a visiting/temporary basis. This would probably work well for a pair introverts.😅

2

Yeah, I feel like this is definitely a mark in favor of "still essentially a cat" for sure. Not totally conclusive, but definitely persuasive. It's tricky though, because as you say, cat-man could still just have cat dander on him or something. OR, I guess a third scenario could be that he gradually turns more and more human, so gradually sheds fewer and fewer proteins, which would be interesting.

I’ve liked every Gumiho show I’ve seen and the actors. So it’s an easy choice for me. Would I afraid of them eating my liver? Not the kdrama ones! Specifically, LDW, Kim Bum, and JKY. Any of those, any day would be just fine. 😂

I'm not sure that the gumiho roommate would do more than its share of the chores, but I'm certain than an house cat that is used to be pampered would not.
Yes, gumiho come with risks.. but also some magic.

Gumiho. My condo association rules stipulates no cats and dogs, except for emotional assistance animals. They say nothing about gumihos who are able to roam around with human likeness 24/7. I also like a roommate who can take care of themselves and chip in for shared expenses.

Also the whole switching back from cat to human to cat - seems very stressful if it can't be controlled. What if he turns back into a cat right when you're lugging your shared groceries home.

This is hard! I love cats and if the man turned into a handsome one like a japanese drama I remember vaguely I could live with that. Aren't gumiho's a bit on the dangerous side, always wanting meat to eat and side eying your liver? Lee seungi-gi was always broke and on his toes buying meat and placating his gumiho but if its a male one and I had the money, why not? foxes are so pretty! Let me see????????

Cat guy was just an anthropomorphized house pet living his best life. Fox guy, by contrast, was a demon who sucked the life force out of his female victim. I'd rathe be a house pet than a demon. Though, admittedly, they did address the issue in the series of cat guy's short cat-length life expectancy
