Ahn Eun-jin finds her way back to My Dearest Namgoong Min

More promos have been released for MBC’s upcoming sageuk My Dearest, showcasing our tragedy bound leads Namgoong Min (One Dollar Lawyer) and Ahn Eun-jin (The Good Bad Mother) in a beautiful new poster and video teaser.

Set against the backdrop of the 1636 Qing Invasion during the Joseon era, the trailer begins with our battle-worn Lee Jang-hyun (Namgoong Min) finding respite by the sea. Reflecting back on happier times, we hear Yoo Gil-chae (Ahn Eun-jin) speaking to him in voiceover: “Do you remember the first day you saw me?” In reply, Jang-hyun gives his honest confession that his heart races whenever he sees her.

With renewed resolve, our hero takes hold of his sword again and turns to face the enemy and we hear Jang-hyun’s desperate warning to Gil-chae: “If you see smoke coming from above that mountain, you must take refuge.” In the sequence we watch as the feared danger forces their way into Joseon, wreaking havoc in the villages.

Gil-chae escapes with the crowds into the woods, but is forced to fight off one attacker. Fighting off tears, she bravely keeps her composure and comforts her friend afterwards. For the sake of their survival, Gil-chae determines that, “Nothing has happened to us today.” In the intermittent text screens, we read the epic declaration that despite the growing danger, a love that grew even stronger is about to begin.”

Taking us through (more) breathtaking landscapes, the camera follows Gil-chae as she runs to find Jang-hyun and she longingly wonders, “Where are you right now?” The teaser then comes to a close as our star-crossed pair finally meet and Jang-hyun tells her, “Don’t ever forget the moments we shared today.”

On the production side, MBC’s My Dearest is co-directed by PD Kim Sung-yong (The Veil) and PD Chun Soo-jin, with scripts penned by Hwang Jin-young (Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People). Part 1 of the 20-episode romance will be launching next month on August 4, broadcasting in the weekend slot.

I’ll just be over here deciding whether/when I’m prepared to get my heart stomped on for this. Maybe I’ll wait for part 2 to come out first?

"Part 1" is something I'm never happy to hear.

Yep, when it comes to emasculating sobbing, I prefer one complete slice rather than losing a single family jewel at a time. This one is shaping up to be Queen for Seven Days/Mr. Sunshine level of punishment.

Goodness, those visuals. At least we'll appreciate the cinematography.

Also, and maybe it's just me, but Ahn Eun-jin looks so darn young with her hair pulled back and minimal makeup. I know she's not, but that baby face...

I'm not thrilled to see this has been split into 2 parts, but everything else about this is throwing out my-personal-kdrama-catnip vibes!

These pictures are superb, it really is going to be an epic drama. I remember thinking that with opening of Curtain call and then having to drop it a couple of episodes later. I hope this one can maintain the extraordinary aspects of the story.

agreed. I couldn't stay with Curtain Call either but Namgoong Min and Ahn Eun jin? I'll stay to the bitter end no matter what may befall us! Its got epic written all over it so I'm in for the ride.

I am hopeful that this sageuk will bring success to MBC. Ratings have been in a sad state for too long.

@kiara: If and when you have time and are inclined to do so, could you please explain about the standing and reputation of these networks as I know very little about them. Thank you!

I'm not good at explaining things so I'll keep it brief. 😊 My love affair with K-dramas started during the early 2000s, primarily because I was fascinated with historical dramas. Back then, Mysoju was the site to watch Asian dramas for international viewers. Two decades later we are still nonfactors when it comes to ratings.😅

Anyway, MBC, KBS, and SBS were (and still are) the three main public television channels (aka the big 3). MBC holds the record for having the all-time highest-rated drama ( "You and I", 66.9%) and all-time highest-rated sageuks ("Hur Jun", 63.5%) but that does not mean KBS and SBS didn't do well.
Here is an example of a rating pattern from 2007.
https://www.dramabeans.com/2007/12/which-2007-dramas-were-the-most-watched/
MBC is at the top, but KBS has more national dramas.

For MBC to struggle at a 2% rating these days are disappointing and sad to see. 😥

I haven’t seen Namgoong Min in a romantic context. Have any of you seen him in such a role or roles? And, if so, did he do well?

I watched him in Beautiful Gong Shim. I really only remember him as another quirky character tho he was the romantic lead. I think it’s because the OTP didn’t work for me. Actually, the whole drama didn’t and I dropped it pretty quickly. (Ah the good ol days, or last year, when I had a ginormous backlog of dramas to pick and drop from.) Hopefully you’ll get a better answer than this.

Mugs, MBC’s MY DEAREST/LOVERS does look interesting and I am a NGM fan but after MBC’s JOSEON ATTORNEY (which in the ratings did not do well in the same F/S slot that MD will occupy) I decided to pass on this year’s possible upcoming sageuks/fusion sageuks and wait for KBS’s S/S 32 episode THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR later in the year.
In the meantime I have slowly begun the long-term watch of the 81 episode MBC’s JUMONG (2006) (Viki US).

Hello @marcusnyc! I hope you enjoy JUMONG.

I started MY DEAREST on a whim and I kid you not: it looks good. Sort of like WAR OF THE ARROWS but extended into a drama.

Oh-ho! I must make some time for THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR. Things are finally looking up in sageuk land it would seem.

It looks so grand and epic!

I liked the supporting cast too with Lee Hak-Joo, Ji Seung-Hyun (he was so good in My Country), Kim Mu-Jun (from Love All Play!), Kim Tae-Hoon :)
