Heartbeat: Episodes 3-4

As our not-quite-vampire adjusts to the fascinating capabilities of modern technology, he soon realizes that earning a living isn’t as easy as he’d expected. Meanwhile, our OTP takes a step forward in the romance department, but a new arrival signals upheaval on the horizon.

EPISODES 3-4

Taecyeon Yoon So-hee Heartbeat: Episodes 3-4

Centuries ago, Woo-hyul once rescued Hae-sun from a feral vampire; that was their first encounter, and the one that began their ill-fated romance. In the present, Woo-hyul’s heroic rescue ends with In-hae chasing the crook all the way to the police station, hah. She accidentally drops her wallet in the process, which Woo-hyul picks up. As he begins the long trek home, a department store piques Woo-hyul’s curiosity.

Cue a fabulous fashion show! (Taecyeon definitely gets a 10 out of 10 for his ability to pull off those garish colors.) At the end of the day, Woo-hyul returns home with a dozen shopping bags and In-hae’s maxed-out credit card. When In-hae finds out, she’s downright furious — does he have any idea how much she’s scrimped and saved over the years?!

Taecyeon Heartbeat: Episodes 3-4

Oh, but she needn’t worry, Woo-hyul declares. See, he’d hidden gold under the floorboards a century ago, so he just has to retrieve them — except they’re all gone without a trace. There goes Woo-hyul’s small fortune.

Once again, they bicker over who owns the mansion; In-hae has the title deed, but Woo-hyul argues back. “It’s my house,” he insists. In-hae begs to differ; he can’t lay claim to the house when he’s knee-deep in credit card debt. Well, she has a point there.

In an effort to clean up Woo-hyul’s mess as best as she can, In-hae decides to resell his purchases online. After a fascinating adventure through the subway station, Woo-hyul finally meets the buyer — who turns out to be his buddy Sang-hae! With Sang-hae’s help, Woo-hyul gets a fake ID, but it’s hard for them to keep their funeral staff jobs when Woo-hyul decides to take a nap in someone else’s coffin.

Having heard that the fraudster got caught, Do-shik pays In-hae a visit at her old apartment, where she’s in the midst of boxing up her belongings. Of course, that’s the exact moment a cockroach decides to scuttle across the floor, sending In-hae screeching and ducking behind Do-shik’s back, much to his amusement. Hah, so tropey but so relatable.

Do-shik offers In-hae and her boxes a lift home, which is how he ends up meeting Woo-hyul for the first time. He’s surprised by how cold Woo-hyul’s hand is, and In-hae hurriedly smacks their hands apart, explaining it away as poor circulation. Do-shik doesn’t seem particularly convinced, but he accepts her excuse anyway.

Taecyeon Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 3-4 Taecyeon Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 3-4

Since Woo-hyul is still stuck in his unemployment woes, In-hae decides he can earn his keep through spring cleaning. They get to work dusting furniture and wiping windows, leading to several cute moments that leave both feeling a little flustered, hee.

By nighttime, the house looks good as new. Curious about the mansion’s history, In-hae asks Woo-hyul how long he’s been residing there. In response, Woo-hyul answers that there’s someone he’s waiting for — he’s stayed in the same place for 400 years, hoping that maybe she’ll come back one day.

Already, we see the parallels between Hae-sun and In-hae. Neither lady is scared of Woo-hyul, and when he asks why, they both give the same answer — because he saved them. He may not be human, but in their eyes, he’s the farthest thing from a monster.

Taecyeon Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 3-4

As fate and our OTP’s magical connection would have it, it’s time for Woo-hyul to be a knight in shining armor once again. His rooftop brooding is interrupted by the sharp pain of his bite mark, and he rushes inside to see a chandelier about to fall on a dozing In-hae. Before he knows it, he’s sweeping her up in his arms, out of danger’s reach. Omg, he can fly again!

Just then, Woo-hyul notices a drop of blood on In-hae’s chapped lips. The parched vampire in him can no longer resist the sweet temptation, and he leans in to get a taste — which means he ends up kissing her. Oops. Naturally, In-hae retaliates by smacking the living daylights out of Woo-hyul, hah.

In-hae’s feeling dazed in the aftermath of her first kiss, but the smooch leaves Woo-hyul reeling for other reasons entirely. When he drank In-hae’s blood, he had a vision of Hae-sun in her last moments, almost as if the blood itself held her memories. Woo-hyul refuses to believe the implications, though — there’s no way the hot-tempered In-hae could be a reincarnation of the sweet and gentle Hae-sun, right?

Woo-hyul may have dug his feet firmly into denial central, but his curiosity winds up getting the better of him. He can’t stop wondering about the connection between him and In-hae, and through a series of fortuitous coincidences, Woo-hyul winds up getting hired as a janitor at In-hae’s high school. He’s happy to be in her vicinity, while she’s decidedly less enthused.

Meanwhile, Do-shik is harboring a secret of his own. There’s a curse in his bloodline; none of the men in his family have made it past the age of forty. Although medical tests show that Do-shik’s heart is perfectly healthy, he’s been experiencing abnormal symptoms, and he can’t help but fear that one day he’ll succumb to a heart attack too.

Determined to avoid his destiny, Do-shik retrieves an ancient ledger from his personal safe. It’s a family heirloom passed down through generations — and as the camera pans over the secret book, we see that it’s titled “vampire record.” Gasp! Is Do-shik related to Woo-hyul’s past too?

We may not have the answers to that yet, but Yang-nam comes through with another dose of his weekly wisdom. Likening Woo-hyul to a pot of boiling water that was taken off the stove at 99°C, Yang-nam explains that he needs In-hae’s blood to reach full mortality. There’s just one problem — In-hae’s blood is too cold in its resting state, so Woo-hyul needs to heat it up by having her fall into a deep, passionate love. Hah, the logic is ridiculous but it fits right into the drama.

That gives Woo-hyul food for thought, and when In-hae defends him from false accusations at school and clears his name, he begins to see her in a different light. It’s as if all the puzzle pieces are finally fitting together — their special connection, her ability to open the coffin, her staunchness in standing up for him. Connecting the dots, Woo-hyul approaches In-hae, calling her by Hae-sun’s name.

Elsewhere, Do-shik arrives at the airport to receive the successful chairwoman NA HAE-WON (Yoon So-hee), who has just returned to Korea. As Do-shik greets her with a radiant smile, we see her face — and she’s a dead ringer for Hae-sun.

Ooh, the plot thickens! It’s interesting how the drama is playing with the idea of reincarnation; usually, the hero’s lost love would either return with the same face, or with a different appearance entirely. Here, it’s both scenarios at once, effectively keeping us (and Woo-hyul) guessing.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that Do-shik is barely a contender in the romance department; he may be considerate and thoughtful, but In-hae often looks burdened by Do-shik’s kindness. Since it’s obvious she doesn’t reciprocate his feelings, I hope Do-shik will have a bigger role to play against Woo-hyul with regards to his vampiric identity, rather than as a romantic rival.

Taecyeon Heartbeat: Episodes 3-4

When Woo-hyul was first given his make-In-hae-fall-in-love mission, I thought it’d be pretty funny if he tried to matchmake Do-shik and In-hae but ended up catching feelings in the process. I have to admit I’m a little disappointed it’s not going in that direction — imagine the sheer havoc that wingman Woo-hyul would wreak — but petulantly jealous Woo-hyul is a treat to watch, so I’m not complaining.

Also, I continue to love the bits of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it humor sprinkled throughout the show! One standout moment this week was Sang-hae’s faux tarot-reading shop, which is really just a front for his actual enterprise of providing forged documents (and even white hair implants, hah) to immortal creatures. Our vampire trio, plus our sage feline, are an absolute hoot to watch — I can’t wait to see what other game plans they cook up, and how our headstrong heroine will thwart them all.

Thanks for the recap @solstices and for all the 2pm peppered throughout. I think you and the drama writer are competing on how many references can be snuck in 😂.

I also thought he'd try to make her fall in love with Do-sik, which I'd have been totally okay with. The actor playing Do-sik is really likeable and, at least so far, the character is likeable too unlike most SMLs.

This show is fun.. Its ridiculously hilarious, in a good way.
I love watching Woo-hyul getting scared or being pushed around by In-hae. He is just such a softie vampire with her.

I totally wanted him to be the wingman and I Hope he does that. That would be so much fun.

I like that his personality is just nice. He is not angry with his mates when they mess up, nor is he outright ragey when the gold is lost nor he throws a pity party for himself for reaching this level of poverty. He takes things in his stride and actually is willing to work towards a better life. He is not pulling the 'I am the rich chaebol how can you expect me to clean etc'.

I did not expect that twist. Its nice! Will the show surprise us or will it all be about 'first love'?

I miss all the references and meta, so appreciate the recaps for that!

This show is so silly but in all the most charming ways. The episodes just zip by, and the laughs don't feel cheap (and I did laugh this time around, not just smile). I continue to love Cat Man because if a cat were human, that cat would absolutely be a sage philosopher with no real self-consciousness or regard for people. In addition, the joke about everyone in the metro wearing a black puffer jacket was spot-on (where I live, it's a black windbreaker, but same difference), and I live for every moment Woo-hyul discovers a modern convenience for the first time (the escalator scene was my personal favorite). That "kiss" also genuinely surprised me. Finally, I was very happy the show rejected indulging in either a straight-up love triangle or reincarnation story.

As I mentioned before, as a non-kpop fan, the only 2pm reference I got was the very direct one when In-Hae told Woo-hyul to meet the buyer of the coat at that exact time. That was cute, if a little on the nose. And that house! It's a perfect set for this show.

I think this show is charming, as you say, when it isn't trying to be too zany. Then it feels a little strained--there were parts of the 3rd episode where I felt the humor was based on Taecyeon's mannerisms alone, which rate a smile but not a laugh.

In fact I really warmed up to it on episode 4, after the surprising kiss, which led to some pretty funny lines spoofing the bloodsucking/sexual seduction metaphor that's always a part of vampire lore. "My first kiss was with a vampire" (That connection was also made with the "hot blood" conceit.)

Speaking of that idea, the Cat man is a consistently funny character, and like @mayhemf I appreciate that Taecyeon is portraying a really kind, considerate and honorable vampire--although some of that, and the humor echoes What We Do in the Shadows, which is also funny in an uneven way.

There are two things that always worry me about jokey fantasies like this one though, and I mentioned this last week:
1. will the show try to tap into some sort of epic vampire hunters vs. vampires story in a too serious way
OR,
2. will it fall into a sappy, overly sentimental exploration of the nature of love across the ages.

Having said that I don't want any serious themes, though, I kind of appreciate the shows early connection of real estate development with vampires!

I chuckled when the cat man removed his own fur with a lint remover after he transformed into a human. I do that after I visit cat homes. Oh, and that second it took the vamp to get cat man's "putting blood on the table." Love me some dry humor without any sounds effects telling me to laugh.

While I do expect some sentimentality (kdrama!), I'm also hoping the show keeps it light. The weakest parts have been the earnest first-love flashbacks.

EP. 3 was funny as always but I hope they get past the tsundere phase soon. All the screaming and anger is getting a bit much and it's just the second week. It's all very valid on her part ofc, I would probably commit a crime if someone maxed out my credit card or kissed me against my permission, but the whole bit is getting tired. When do they start falling for each other 🥺🥺

Also I love how she's so poor, she's forced to live in shabby rooms with cockroaches for roommates and uses broken headphones... But she also has the latest Samsung foldable smartphone 🤣🤣

EP. 4: "how does he have more game when he just woke up" 💀💀
The poor guy is getting pepper sprayed next week?? Yeah, he makes the dumbest, creepiest move every episode but still... It's getting old, can he just catch a break??

Tbh, I prefered the idea of him trying to get her to fall for Discount Im Siwan, since he needs her blood when she's in love or whateve, but they gradually fall for each other. I think that trope is very cute.
Instead, it seems that he's gonna try to woo her at the same time as Discount Im Siwan for that optimal love triangle action bc who doesn't love those

Wonder what effect So-hee's character will have 👀👀 is she a vampire too? Was the red outfit a clue or just a joke?

"But she also has the latest Samsung foldable smartphone"
PPL baby, PPL. I found that funny too.

Is the 2FL a vampire? I was struck by that too. Not just the red coat, but also her pasty face, lipstick game, strong! I have a feeling she's a property shark, or perhaps another vampire hunter. But it'll be fun if she turns out to be a vampire herself.

I'm tiring of the screeching too. They could have done the bickering better. But at least, while they're not falling for each other yet, by E4 they are seeing each other in a more positive light and getting interested. Slow burn? I'm thinking each will get pulled by the second leads first before finding their way to each other by the end.

Actually I think that’s quite normal for non super rich to have nice cell phones. It’s a computer you can put in your hand, and a lot of people use it as the one tech device they have. I teach at a school where the parents are all hardworking immigrant families who don’t have a lot, but almost every kid has a nice cell phone.

Is the writer Taec's fan? The ML is called handsome every five minutes. Besides the FL obviously being his first love, the show is well written otherwise.

Required fields are marked *

And I am surprised no one is talking about the age gap between the leads. When the FL is 6 year older than the male lead, the show is automatically classified as the noona romance. Here Taec is 11 years older than Won Ji An and the show and the audience do not mention it at all.

2
11

Required fields are marked *

Probably because they don't look that far apart in age. In my experience, most viewers don't comment on age differences unless it's obvious because they don't necessarily know the performers' ages off-hand; I, for one, had no idea Taec is 11 years older until I read your post.

As for the excessive commentary on his looks, I noticed it as well in the first two episodes and as I said last week, although Taec is certainly an attractive guy, women practically falling over themselves in awe of his handsomeness seemed like a bit much to me (I respectfully submit that he's more adorable than classically handsome). But this week, I'm starting to feel like these comments are some kind of inside or meta joke. I mean, practically every drama in the world includes multiple lines reminding viewers how good looking the main protagonists are in case we somehow missed it or didn't immediately agree, but in this show, the comments are so frequent as to feel more significant. So either it's a joke, as I mentioned above, or maybe it's integral to the plot somehow? Like as a vampire he holds sway over everyone who sees him?

10
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I don't think the actors look that age apart, and the actress is not well known so the audience's reaction is not that surprising. However, the show's approach is also slightly unusual, every other drama made a huge deal out of the age gap. In Taxi Driver Lee Jae Hoon and Pyo Ye Jin are 9 years apart and she spends first season calling him ahjussi. Same thing happened in My Liberation Notes. Here no one sees it.

> Like as a vampire he holds sway over everyone who sees him?

I do not think so, his poor friends don't seem very successful on the dating front. As you said, it is probably a meta joke...

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's hilarious that he also is completely convinced he's super-handsome because people keep telling him that - but he can't actually see himself, at least in a mirror, and has no idea how often he looks goofy or pretentious or otherwise makes a mockery of his looks. I think it's also poking fun at lookism a bit. All these people are so focused on his outward appearance that they can't see that he's not even human (yet).

I noted the age gap and thought it was weird, but in this case he is meant to be a Vampire so it works, but I think if Taecyeon is a lead, they have to find rookie actors because any actress his age is unlikely to be a rookie and very likely to outclass him in acting. So a rookie actress it is.

It's only called a noona romance when the female character is older than the ML and their love story is focused on it.

In this case, he's a vampire and an old one, the age doesn't matter anymore.

Taecyeon is often casted with younger actresses like Kim So-Hyun, Kim Hye-Yoon.

As for the drama I'm loving it and not only because Taec is the best at playing funny and cute, but because the comedy and all the ridiculousness is absolutely working for me.

I have the feeling that there is a very personal relationship between DoSik and HaeWon, more that just two people working together, maybe they both are from vampire slayers families? I'm also intrigued on how WooHyeol will react when he sees her.

I enjoyed episode 4 as it was the first one that had me immersed. I was struck by the novel storyline that a character has Hae-Sun's face while our heroine seems to have her characteristics. It might be a new take on the reincarnation trope--which really, I have never disliked but fresh ideas are always welcome.
I do find myself with a touch of SLS despite Taecyeon's sweet vampire.

The odd episode was a bit weaker (some strained jokes, too much screeching, etc) than the even. I felt the same for Episodes 1 and 2. Too soon to call it a pattern? Still, overall, good fun.

I'm now thinking the triangle will be between FL (soul reincarnated) and 2FL (who merely looks like her). While I wanted the trope upended, this may be enough of a twist. As discussed upthread, our vampire is oh so vain. He'll likely believe (at first) the 2FL is the one, despite the clues. She looks the part and will likely butter him up, feed into his vanity. Of course, we all know she's evil. (That coat was not subtle!) Now, does she just want the house, or is she in the league of vampire hunters?

So perhaps at first our vampire be the wingman to 2ML to get the FL's blood hot while he pursues the 2FL himself in his mistaken belief? And in the process, will our OTP find themselves being attracted to each other despite the second leads? One can hope.

But of course, in the end, our vampire will understand the fallacy of his shallow ways (looks don't matter, etc). Defeat the evildoers (or perhaps truce out by sharing his blood with the sick 2ML). Our OTP reunited. The house saved and returned to all its nightclub glory! Amen.

If this theory is wrong, even better! I like a show that keeps us guessing.

It is odd that i found certain scenes in even episodes boring. In ep 4, the entire scene of Woo Hyeol smelling ox blood and his neighbours complaining of his mansion blocking the redevelopment project was boring.

Then there was another bit about Dong Seob asking if Woo Hyeol made the delivery and paying him, which the later refused.

I do not know why these scenes are even there or why they are kept them for more than few seconds

I absolutely adore this show. Taec is killing this role! Who would've thought a vampire trying to be human and make a cold hearted girl fall in love can be this enterntaining. @solstices Thank you for the recap.
You are right about the blink and miss funny scenes.

1.When Woo Hyeol asks for a brush and inkstone, the FL says," use a pen unless you want to be hit by a inkstone" and there was a sound effect of a whip snap or slap with Taec's hilarious reaction to it.
2. When the FL and SML go for dinner, the FL looks at the menu and asks the SML to pick the dishes not because the food is pricey, but because she has no clue about the dishes.😂😂

The drama is good and most of the credit goes to Taec for being effortlessly funny, but it gets draggy whenever there is obivious plot progression such as the SML being cursed and the butcher scheming to get rid of the mansion.

I'm really enjoying this show, it's got a kind of TOTNTails vibe with its wacky, ridiculousness that doesn't take itself seriously.
Compared to Kind the Land I think this show delivers more consistency with the comedic tone overall.
The two leads are playing off each other really well and the side character of Lee Sang Hae is hilarious, he easily steals the scenes he is in.
I look forward to the light hearted hijinks and just hope the show doesn't go really dark and trauma heavy.

Oh man, I am LOVING this drama. Nothing better than a drama you love airing on Mondays and Tuesdays, making that otherwise dreaded start of the week so much better.

I wouldn't put my money on it, but I would love it so much if the FL isn't descended from ML's first love. Not only would it be a really fresh plot point, especially in Kdrama land, it also would IMO be a little too coincidental if the FL happens to be descended from BOTH his beloved butler and his first love (unless maybe the butler got there in the first place because of the first love). I'm also wondering if his first love is now a vampire. Also, like, how would his FL have any descendants if she died in that flashback scene?

Last week, my money (and hope) was on the FL not being first love. That'd be fresh. This week, I wondering if the twist is that FL is the soul incarnated, and the 2ML only *looks* like his first love. And this will place our very much looks-first vamp hero in a pickle.
