Ji Chang-wook and Wie Ha-joon become The Worst of Evil

Jumping out at us from under the woodwork, Disney+ announced that The Worst of Evil will soon be coming to our screens, kicking off promos with the piercing glares of Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me) and Wie Ha-joon (Little Women) in the crime-action’s first posters.

Against the backdrop of ye olde 1990, the story takes us into the gritty underbelly of the Gangnam region in Seoul, where an underground black market of drug trafficking has been steadily expanding between South Korea, China, and Japan.

To gain valuable intel and take down the organizations from within, our hero and police officer Park Joon-mo (Ji Chang-wook) is sent undercover to act as a gang member and infiltrate the mob. It is here that Joon-mo meets the charismatic Jung Ki-chul (Wie Ha-joon), the emerging mob group’s boss who prizes loyalty and brotherhood.

Although not yet featured, the series also stars Im Se-mi (Duty After School) as the skilled police officer Yoo Eui-jung. She is assigned to the same team investigating the drug trafficking case, and is described as having a bright and optimistic personality. But Eui-jung is in a complicated position as she is also Joon-mo’s wife.

On the production side, directing for the noir is being helmed by filmmaker Han Dong-wook (Man in Love) and PD Park Geun-beom, with writing by screenwriter Jang Min-seok (Secret Reunion). Disney+’s The Worst of Evil will be launching on September 27.

At this point, I know enough not to bother getting excited until I know whether it will be on Hulu. Maybe when it gets closer.

It's going to be on Hulu. And on time, not waiting until the entire series has aired.

Let’s take votes. Will we just watch Healer again, or will we take a risk on this drama?

I’ll make replies here and you can vote with your “likes,” if you want.

C. Forget Ji Chang-wook, I'm watching this drama for Wi Ha-joon.

This sounds more interesting than many of JCW's previous, post-Healer roles (he's playing a cop *and* a husband here), and I think he and Wie Ha-joon might have great chemistry. So I'll give this one a go. I don't know if it's a bad sign, though, that this is the first a lot of us have heard anything about this drama.

I have seen a few pic some months ago (and a clip where I found more charisma to WHJ than to JCW).

Maybe another option could be:

I barely survived Healer but it was well worth the stress of stepping outside my comfort zone, however this one sounds much darker just from the description so I will follow this one via weecaps or drama hangout thanks.

Please let it be the turn around in career for JCW, he deserves it. He has suffered because he has not found another writer and PD to match the quality of Healer.

I am interested in the husband/wife dynamic when they are both cops especially in the heavy end of policing. I don’t see how they will manage to maintain a marriage under those circumstances and surely with him being undercover he will have to stay away from the house and her to keep her safe. Her sunny disposition sounds like a hard sell in this line of work so it will be interesting to see if they can make it work.

The "optimistic FL" description is a red flag for me. Hopfully she'll be given more to do than just be "the girl character"... Noir thrillers ate notorious at not writing women well at all.

Still, looking foword to this.

I would love to be able to watch a gritty crime drama with Ji Chang-wook but that won’t be possible for me because of Disney+. Wi Ha-joon is a blank slate for me but he is also in the cast of Netflix’s GYEONGSEONG’S CREATURE which hopefully will air sometime this year so I will catch him there.

I've already started watching Healer again recently, so that one's covered. I'll give the new show 2-3 episodes in hope JCW managed to land his first good role since Healer.

Since this is on Hulu, changes are null that I catch it somewhere decent. *cries in potential. So Healer it is! 🙌

I've suffered along with every other JCW fan in the post Healer era BUT action suits him best AND I liked his his last drama If You Wish Upon Me (I'm not actually sure if Sound of Magic was before or after) so I'll sign up for this (I say it like I wouldn't have given it a shot regardless because hello JCW)

Personally I think it’s the worst of evil that Wi Ha-joon REFUSES to be in a romance-centric drama and keeps playing second-fiddle in action-y stuff. Sure, maybe he’s simply not into that genre, but what about my wishes as a loyal audience member?

Little Women lied to me, hoodwinked me, stole all my money and left me for dead. What a waste of perfectly good chemistry and hot people.

I don't blame him though given his most recent entanglement was with a woman who wandered everywhere with a whole backpack full of money, who instantly drank anything on the table even it had a blue color, who didn't seem to have any plan before jumping into action 😅

Now there, whom amongst us hasn’t drunk random neon-blue drinks given by shady people who want to kill you? I thought that was normal! *puts on clown makeup*

I wish his “entanglement” had more action going on and I don’t mean the punching and kicking kind 😒.

I see you've been drinking with @sicarius.

WHJ and JCW in action are always better than WHJ and JCW missing in action. This is far from my favorite genre, but I have totally given up on either of these actors ever appearing in a romance-centered drama that doesn't stink or pull the rug out from under us - at least until they're ready for ahjussi romances - so I'll probably tune in to take what I can get.

I have spent the last few years building up an immunity to neon-blue drinks, you see. The trick is to set them on fire.

Lady Nightshade, as her name would suggest, is clearly no stranger to poisons also ;)

2

It's true, I'll take them however they come - even if its the same kind of projects that make me want to scream into the ether in agony. Oh well, at least we'll always have Healer for JCW. The most I can hope from WHJ now is a secondary romance in Gyeongseong Creature instead of being SLS-ed. That'll be a small mercy.

2

@sicarius: You either set them on fire or mix it with vodka. That neutralizes the evil orchid by being even worse for you. I would know this, of course, as the resident expert on poisons and toxins.

2

@ladynightshade
But it doesn't last, and the orchid is dead. So win win, I say.

4

Right there with you Lady Nightshade. I want to see him in a romcom so bad.

(2023) THE WORST OF EVIL. Disney+. Stop! Do not proceed.
(2023?) JTBC’s WELCOME TO SAMDALRI. Proceed with caution,
(2024) QUEEN WOO. Paramount+. Stop! Do not proceed.
(2025) THE HOOLIGANS. Proceed with caution.

It probably sounds more ominous or dramatic than intended.
The first and third dramas I won’t be watching only because of the +streaming services that will be carrying them.
The second and fourth dramas I am cautiously hopeful will become available to US viewers on a streaming service I subscribe to. As for US availability nothing is a given nowadays. Just look at Kocowa.

I will see you (figuratively) at the Goryeo-Khitan War.

3 Kingdoms shows are so rare, and they have to self sabotage by being on a lesser used (I think) streaming service. So sad.
Are you sure I can't tempt you to join those of us over on the darkside... *hopeful eyes*
I will definitely see you in Goryeo nonetheless!! 🫰

You're not gonna watch Queen Woo??? A traitor to the 3 Kingdoms Gang, you are 🤣🤣🤣

I can’t help you with YouTube but MyDramaList (MDL) is a great place to start. 1. Go to the main MDL page for general news or 2. go to JCW’s MDL page for information specific to him:
1. https://mydramalist.com/

2. https://mydramalist.com/people/806-ji-chang-wook

I hope this helps.

Have only ever seen Wie Ha-joon as Son Ye-jin's little brother in Something in the Rain (which was an intriguing and fairly aggravating introduction to the concept that brothers are generally hyper-critical of their sisters' behaviour) and as the book artist in Romance is a Bonus Book. I was generally fairly underwhelmed by that show.
