War, gods, and desires in Arthdal Chronicles: Aramun’s Sword

The upcoming Arthdal Chronicles: Aramun’s Sword has dropped new character teasers with each one highlighting the motivations of its main cast. Taking place eight years after its previous season, this newest installment to the series will follow the journey of its four central figures as they write their own legends and leave their mark on history.

Playing the role of twins Eunseom and Saya is Lee Jun-ki (Again My Life), and while he may be a departure from the previous iteration, he sure fits the look of the leader of the Ago Tribe and future god of Arthdal. In his teaser, Eunseom declares, “For Tanya. For my people.” As he plows down his enemies, he promises to become Aramun Haesulla (the god of union).

Returning to his role as Tagon is Jang Dong-gun (Arthdal Chronicles). Described as the bringer of war and the first king of Arthdal, Tagon makes his grand entrance and whispers, “How foolish.” He announces boldly that he is both order and balance, and ends with the declaration: “It’s finally time to unite Arthdal.”

Joining the cast for the first time is Shin Se-kyung (Run On) as Tanya. Her title is the one who takes advantage of the gods — Arthdal’s “great mother.” Unlike the others, she dresses in white and stands against violence. In the teaser, she realizes that this war will not end until one side is annihilated, and she feels that it is her duty to stop that bloodshed. As she holds a ritual, Tanya proclaims, “They will listen now to the cries of the living and all their sounds.”

Finishing out this quartet is Kim Ok-bin (Love to Hate You) reprising her role as Taealha. Now the queen of Arthdal, Taealha will exploit anything to achieve her goals, and her ruthlessness is on full display in the teaser as she easily holds her own against her foes. She advises someone to never forget the things you wish to possess no matter what, and at the end, she states, “If it’s not a game I prepared, I will not play. I would rather upturn it all.”

Directed by PD Kim Kwang-shik and written by Kim Young-hyun (Arthdal Chronicles) and Park Sang-yeon (Arthdal Chronicles), tvN’s Arthdal Chronicles: Aramun’s Sword premieres on September 9.

I'm so excited for this, despite there not being a magic horse. This also looks totally different and that it might be more seriously written than season 1. Season 1 was unintentionally camp, so hilarious, this is not looking that way, hmmm, we shall see. This doesn't look funny.

I hope that there is a good explanation of what has transpired in the intervening years between the end of season one and the beginning of season 2. I'm also wondering if the story will continue past a second season. Once again, it sucks that the streaming platform was changed. :(

The change in styling is rather distracting - did we just time-travel an era or two? - I'd prefer them to stop at recasting half of leads. Taealha looks like she's cosplaying Disney cartoon witch with that feathered collar and crazy crown. SSK looks lethargic, like she always does in serious non-lively roles. And where did they lose Eunseom's curls (new wig is meh, LJG deserves better) and twin bro? OK, MDL says Saya's teaser is coming in a few days, phew. Got all worried for a second. Saving the best for the last, I see you, show^^ Don't they dare to mess with his styling as well, THAT would be really unforgivable.

She does look like a Disney villain in a Disney+ show. How fitting.

Kim Ok-bin can wield a sword. It's about time they give her something to do other than yell.

I recall there was a scene in Season1 when she fought to protect Tagon. But it's unlikely writers will let her fight him or Eunseom, and Tanya isn't into such things at all... We only have Saya left to potentially spar with her, I suppose.

I've heard S1 was a mess but idk the costumes and LJG are enough to convince me to give this a go!! But based on the teasers, it looks like it's quite promising!

Ooooh Taealha! She's not a physical fighter so it'd be cool to see more action from her besides what other trickery she has up her sleeve.

Everyone looks epic. Really want a serious, intense battle!

Have you seen Kim Ok-bin in "The Villainess?" She's the Korean version of Kill Bill.
She earned a black belt in Taekwondo and more.

At least we can finally see something this time. It was hurting my eyes and trying to adjust my screen brightness didn’t work.

But the costume looks so cheap (like the one in Scarlet Heart compared with the expensive one in The King Loves). How much did they have to cut the budget down? Probably no trip to Brunei either.

Give me Lee Jun-ki in an action, romance, adventure, saeguk, mystery, yeah, just about anything and I will be there to watch him. (it). Add the rest of this cast and I am so excited for it to begin!

Checking in to say I'm re-watching Season 1 and like it a lot (episode 8 so far). Song Joong Ki playing twin roles is gold. The passion he put in his Wahan tribe-self, versus the more quiet, calculating and superior Saya, made me forget there was one man playing two parts. Also admired the interwoven plotting the writer gave us. Too often characters are given sudden strengths or interests out of the blue, which restrains our belief in the story. However from the beginning, the writers low-key underscored Tanya's Dad as the tribe's inventor & maintenance genius who came up with fire for the tribe and was always puttering, lost in his "pre-historic tech". By including this character note in the intro, then later, when the Wahan tribe is scattered into Arthdal as slaves, it would have seemed forced to make us believe that Tanya's Dad's curiousity about the metal forge, or learning Arthdal's written letters just popped up. And you can bet his working in the 'Forge' will impact the plot more later on too. The writer did such awesome job of 'seeding' the plot ahead of big events to give the story credabilty. Same with the well-nuanced characterization, especially Tagon, who, unlike the simple greed Taelha has for power, fights regularly with doubts and guilt/hate feelings in his psyche formed by his harsh Dad as well as his self-loathing for being a 'monster...an 'Igutu'. He was a villain I found easy to be drawn to, likely because he was an outsider. Not easy for a writer to accomplish this in an action drama, but the writers succeeded also with Eunsom, his twin Saya, and Tanya too, who makes some iffy choices 'for the good of all'. The side characters in this drama were functional but our red-headed bodyguard "Hae Tuak" stood out for me. So now I find myself in a binge-watch state of mind...wanting to see what will happen next. But waiting a week to see the next chapter puts dents in my memory for detail and lessens my character addiction. The large world of Arthdal is a lot to take in, so watching it all in a week and a half has changed the intensity for me. I could barely take-in the set design or costuming, so if they weren't up to standard, it didn't register, or keep me from liking this drama a lot. Loved the period it's set in too...so unique for an historical. Looking forward to seeing how this pair of writers do with the next season. Lee Joon Ki alone is worth the ride.

I'm currently re-watching season one while waiting for the upcoming episodes of season two. I too like the attention to detail, hints of things to come, and characterizations. And I also think that Tanya's father will play an important role in relation to the development of advanced weaponry.

I didn't actually watch season one when it first aired. I think I watched it a little over a year ago and as I wrote above, I am re-watching it now. It might have its faults, but I still like the show.
