Lee Jun-ki fights for Arthdal Chronicles: Aramun’s Sword

After leaving its viewers on a cliffhanger for four years, Arthdal Chronicles finally returns with a new season. Reprising their roles are Jang Dong-gun (Arthdal Chronicles) as Tagon and Kim Ok-bin (Love to Hate You) as Taealha. As for the other main characters, Lee Jun-ki (Again My Life) will be taking over the role of Eunseom and Saya (previously played by Song Joong-ki), and Shin Se-kyung (Run On) will be joining the show as Tanya (previously played by Kim Ji-won).

The new season will take place eight years after Tagon ascended to the throne and will center around the legendary “Aramun’s sword.” The short teaser plays on this concept, opening up with a shot of a city with a statue of a warrior wielding a weapon. Black smoke emerges from the sword until it covers the entire screen and turns the surrounding area into ruins. The leads’ faces are then flashed on the blade, and someone pulls it out of the ground and thrusts it towards a stormy sky. The title cards read, “The master of the sword/Who will become the rightful owner of Arthdal?”

Alongside some major actor changes, the newest season of Arthdal Chronicles has found a different streaming platform as well. While the first season aired simulcast on Netflix back in the day, the second season will stream on Disney+ for select areas.

Despite its initial buzz, Arthdal Chronicles was met with mixed reviews during its original run, and while it was not a complete ratings dud, it definitely performed less than expected. The odd airing schedule and strange division into parts may have contributed to some of the disgruntlement, but hopefully, Arthdal Chronicles: Aramun’s Sword will surpass its predecessor and offer a satisfying, long-awaited conclusion for its fans.

Screenwriters Kim Young-hyun and Park Sang-yeon are penning the script again and have joined hands with PD Kim Kwang-shik who directed the epic sageuk movie The Great Battle. Arthdal Chronicles: Aramun’s Sword premieres on September 9 on tvN in the Saturday-Sunday timeslot.

I have not watched the first season (which My drama list divides into three parts). It's been on my radar because the PD and the writers are a great team with very good dramas to their credit, but I know it got mixed reviews.

Btw, Lee Jun-ki looks amazing in that pic.

I watched the first series so I could watch Lee Jun-Ki, and having low expectations I enjoyed it. I have a very high tolerance for fantasy/mythology i.e. I'll take what I can get, and this had enough world building, great cinematography and acting, and echoes of other better mythologies, that I could swallow it quite happily.

"but hopefully, Arthdal Chronicles: Aramun’s Sword will surpass its predecessor"

That's a pretty low bar, but...
... I really hope this one flops. As in the most expensive spectacular flop in kdrama history. There have been too many mediocre sequels to shows that didn't deserve ANY sequel, and I think only an expensive disaster will teach them that only GOOD shows deserve 2nd seasons.
Original Arsedal was not just bad, it was offensively bad, not just Vagabond-level so bad it's almost good. So unless DB feedback says everyone loves S2, I'm staying away.

@sicarius: Thanks for this bit of backstory. Did you ever manage to find the coconut and melon flavour?

Yes I did! I hunted down that elusive coconut ghost eventually. That story can be read here: https://www.dramabeans.com/members/sicarius/activity/924296/

Alas, now, there is both an Ube melona (💜 - and purple has been my favourite colour since I could recognise colours), and a Pineapple Coconut Melona (🍍 - which @katakwasabi and I predicted, and also Pineapples and I go a long way back), it's like they're stalking me at this point, honestly, but neither of which I've found, because both of which I think are exclusive to the PHL or something, thanks Binggrae, anyway, we never give up Hope.

We know they're capable of terrible lighting, so maybe sock puppets will work. @lordcobol

This... teaser, if you can even call it that, looks more like a generic fantasy game ad. It's supposedly airing in just a month, and that's the promo material they're trying to entice people to watch it with? Hmm... Then again, I'd be naive to expect better from The Mouse. Next time they'd better to focus on LJG, he's the only one who can try to salvage it at this point. And no, despite my harsh tone above I do NOT hate this project just for the sake of hating, I just believe he's too good for this in its current state. Hope the actual show proves me at least partially wrong... Whatever the result will be, it'd better to inspire him to return to sageuks for good - it's been so long since MLSHR, we've been SUFFERING!

I can’t be the only one who is enjoying the first season. I think though it was quite slow, but the story was very authentic and pretty brilliantly written. The directing also pretty solid. And I said this as someone who rarely like fantasy. The only and a major complaint I have for season 2 is they change the actors who played Tanya and Eunseom. I think SJK and KJW played their character so well I don’t want them to be replaced. And to be honest, SSK’s acting isn’t my cup of tea. And one more complain. It takes to long to produce the second season.

I feel bad for the show that the season 1 execution was so messed up. Read somewhere that there were scheduling delays, staff were overworked till injuries, production teams were not paid...way too many issues. We could see the production quality go down drastically in the later episodes. The project was too ambitious at the time.
Hopefully lessons were learnt from the past and this season turns out better. Should commend the makers for continuing with the project and taking the story to completion.

Ooops...I defintely walked into the wrong room for the Aarthdal discussion. The knives are all out it seems by the comments...but I'm happily all in. I thought the Aarthdal-era backdrop was a fresh take on an historical period that's rarely done anymore (has anyone seen the wayyyyy old 1890's movie called "Quest For Fire"?). The sheer novelty of watching how a civilization slowly changes as a conquered tribe is forced to blend into the skein of its' conquerors way of life, building new connections and a more diverse culture. It fascinated me...yet also disappointed because series #1 never gave us the satisfaction of seeing the outcoe of the BIG battle for power at the 'non-ending'. I'd like to see season two, yet won't because Disney has the monopoly on it here. Sad.

I originally started the first one primarily because it was supposed to be set in Gojoseon, the 2000 BC period of Korean history before Three Kingdoms, and before most of any currently still with us Korean Written history. It was marketed as being about the founding myth of Dagun and Korea as a nation itself.
But I always felt that it was having a massive identity crisis between being an epic fantasy, being a historical fantasy, and being a historical retelling of a myth or having anything to do with that inspired period of history.
It wasn't historically accurate enough to any period, let alone the period it claimed to be a historical, but it wasn't well thought out enough or focused enough to be an epic fantasy.
For all that they put so much work into things like the languages of the tribes and the [Ancient Korean Elves with Blue Blood], I was never satisfied by anything it was trying to do, and genuinely seriously attempting.
I've written about this a lot (a lot) already, so my comments on the final recap of S1 sum it up better though.

So the story starts 8-10 years after the season 1. Saaya just discovers about Eunsom - what happens to that.

My husband and I really enjoyed season 1, even though my husband isn't really into K-dramas. I was really excited that it was renewed for a 2nd season, then I was extremely disappointed they were replacing 2 of the main leads. But I do enjoy Lee Jun-ki, so I'll give the 2nd season a try. But Disney +??? I'm not getting a subscription for Disney+. Should have just kept this on Netflix.

Arthdal Chronicles is by far one of my favorite TV series ever. The production, the writing, the acting, the costumes, the sets, everything is just so amazing.
I just finished rewatching season 1 to get prepped for season 2 and I cannot find it in Canada! I'm so disappointed. Even all the streaming services like Asian wiki, drama cool, kiss Asian Etc all say there's English subtitles but there aren't any English subtitles added to the episodes. 😭
I've gone through at least 15 different links LOL
Can someone please upload it with English subtitles. It would be greatly appreciated from this Canadian girl eh! 😘
