You can only pick one: Rookie actress

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one rookie actress

DaebakGrits: The first rookie actress that comes to mind is Roh Yoon-seo. I really enjoyed her performance in Crash Course in Romance and 20th Century Girl. Well, I found her character in 20th Century Girl a bit annoying — in a pitying awww-you’re-a-dramatic-teenager-with-a-crush-and-I’m-too-old-to-sympathize kind of way. I haven’t gotten around to watching either Our Blues or Black Knight, though, so I can’t say that I’ve seen the full range of her acting skills. But even so, I’m impressed with what I’ve seen. While she played a high school girl in both Crash Course in Romance and 20th Century Girl, she made both roles feel distinctive, and I honestly didn’t recognize her in Crash Course in Romance after first seeing her in 20th Century Girl.

solstices: Choi Sung-eun! Making a memorable television debut in the anthology piece SF8: Joan’s Galaxy, she then thoroughly impressed me with her nuanced performance in Beyond Evil. As the resident butcher shop owner in the tiny village of Manyang, she was many things at once — a voice of reason, a lonely girl searching for her mother, the glue keeping their slowly-fracturing community together. Her turn as an impoverished high school student in The Sound of Magic further showcased her versatility through a deft interweaving of downtrodden cynicism and earnest vulnerability, reaffirming her position as an up-and-coming rookie actress whom I have high hopes for.

Unit: Roh Yoon-seo for the win! (Even the Baeksang Art Awards agree with me, heh!) I’ve loved her since Our Blues — I was surprised that it was her debut drama — and I look forward to seeing her in more non-high school roles. Hopefully, she’ll keep picking good scripts.

Dramaddictally: With no shortage of new talent in dramaland, this might be the hardest choice yet. But after careful consideration, I’ve decided on Shin Eun-soo. I had seen her in various dramas since 2016 (The Legend of the Blue Sea, Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol), but she first stopped me in my tracks with her lead performance in the 2022 KBS Drama Special Like Otters, where she played a gritty but vulnerable high school student trying to escape an abusive home. This little one-act drama packed a lot of punch and was entirely carried by its two young leads. Later in 2022, I saw her again in Summer Strike (well, as many episodes as I could make myself stick around for), and her character had a similar brash attitude with a tender underbelly. The thing that caught my attention (besides her voice) is that even as she’s playing characters that we think we’ve seen before, something about her feels off-beat and authentic. And I really like that her leading roles don’t have her playing “nice girls,” but likable and identifiable ones.

Roh Yoonseo I have only seen her partly in crash course in romance as I stopped watching early but watched some clips of the teens as it was funny and watched the last episode as I knew all the negative elements had gone and she was superb. My main viewing was in 20th Century girl and I did not recognise it was the same actress. I am tempted to watch the Our Blues episodes that she was in as it was a serious role to have for a debut but no doubt it is the reason she has had such good roles offered to her since.

By the end, I was watching Crash Course in Romance for her and the other high schoolers alone. She did such a good job!

I think I'm going to go with Kim Si-a for this one. I've seen her in three things, and excited to see what she does next!

I saw her first in Kill Boksoon, where she played the main character's daughter. She is a classic moody teenager with some extra angst thrown in as she tries to come out to her mom and figure out how to navigate some awful high school situations.

Then I saw her in The Silent Sea where she doesn't have a ton to do, but it's so different from the other role I had seen that I was really impressed. Here she's a skittish, traumatized, girl who has gone through a lot and been on her own for a long time.

And finally, I thought she did a great job as Yoon Ju-won in See You In My 19th Life. Her friendship/crush with Seo-ha was adorable, her untimely end was heartbreaking, and she really made me believe she was mature beyond her years.

She is honestly the best. Try watching Kingdom: Ashin of the North. If you think her acting in the 3 projects you mentioned are good, her acting as Ashin is 10 times more. The role itself has a lot more range and challenges, it also has a much longer run time. Trust me, please watch it even just for her performance. You won't regret it.

Oooh! I did want to mention her! I first watched her in Miss Baek but I didn't realize it was her until The Silent Sea. If you love her in all those three you'd love her even more in Miss Baek she's so amazing for someone that age!

Roh-Yoon Seo is the obvious and easy choice. She's had a string of hits in her very short career. Easy button.

The less obvious choice? How about Kang Myung-Joo? The mature woman who knocked it out of the park in See You in my 19th Life. She played the role of the mother from the 18th life where she had 2 incredibly impactful scenes where she matched the intensity of Shin Hye-Sun. The first scene if the imagined dance with Ji-Eum and the second scene where she's introduced to Ji-Eum in Ju-Won's room. Those 2 scenes might have been the most impactful of the entire series. I'm tearing up just thinking about those scenes.
She's played tiny roles in very few dramas, but I'm cheering her on to see more of her.

oh my, yes!!! Kang Myung-Joo was mesmerizing!!! I immediately googled her after watching her in See You in my 19th Life. She really made an impression with her restrained and steady acting. Korea does not lack talented actresses of her age, but she really stood out. I really want to see her more from now on!!!

Shin Eun-Soo was pretty good in DDSSLLS, Summer Strike or Like Otters but the roles were pretty similar. I wish to see her in new register.

Roh Yoon-Seo showed different characters and I was really good.

I like Kim Hwan-Hee but I watched her only in When the Weather is Fine and Here's My Plan. I hope to see her in a new drama soon.

Choi Myung-Bin, she's still a kid-teen, but she was great in the both roles of brother and sister in The King's Affection. I liked her in 25-24 and Missing: The Other Side 2 too.

Not sure how many dramas an actress needs to have under her belt before she's not a "rookie" anymore, but my vote here for this You Can Only Pick One is clear:

Won Ji-an, currently of HeartBeat and an episode of D.P. 2

She's electric on screen. Really makes you care about her and her character's arc. I look forward very much to her future work.

Roh Yoon Seo for sure, but Kim Si A, I didn't even realize she was the same girl in both Kill Boksoon and See you in my 19th life. So Kim Si A with the slight edge

My first thought was the young actress who impressed me greatly playing the young girl/king in King's Affection, Choi Myung Bin. Then I wondered if a child actress can be considered a "rookie" so I looked up her CV and was amazed at the number of productions she's been in since 2016 She was in Young Lady and a Gentleman, Twenty five, Twenty one as the grown FL's daughter and at least a half dozen others in guest or supporting roles She even won the 2021 KBS Award for "Best Young Actress". I believe she's a legit rookie on the rise.

My vote for the rookie actress who has impressed me the most is Jung Ji So. She has to be one of the most talented rookie actresses in the industry at the moment. As much as Song Hye-Kyo's performance as Dong-Eun was praised, I think Jung Ji So, who played her younger self, had the more challenging role of showing us the day-to-day, tangible and visceral pains as a victim of high-school bullying and the isolation that results from it. Overall, I think her acting was quite nuanced and she was able to show a broad spectrum of emotions, even despite her short appearance in the series.

I agree with everything you said, and I think she also managed more than should have been possible in Doom At Your Service, given the poor material she was working with. She's my runner-up--with the caveat that she's been acting for a decade.

I haven't seen her performance in Doom At Your Service yet and didn't realize how much experience she had acting! I guess that's the tricky part about how we define "rookie actors" nowadays, especially since award shows like Baeksang nominate certain actors/actresses as best new actors/actresses even though some of them have years of experience acting, either as child actors or worked mostly in film (i.e, Koo Kyo-Hwan).

Exactly! I have her as my runner-up because most of her roles are as the younger version of a character who is played by someone for most of the drama. I think we can make an exception for newly adult former child actors.

My pick is Kim Hieora. I found her incredibly compelling in Bad and Crazy (and in everything since). She was completely unknown to me when I saw it, but from her first scene I wanted to know and see more of her. I think we've only begun to scratch the surface of her talent. I'm convinced that she can do anything, and I'm looking forward to watching her try.

Side Note: Well, I just learned that the bestie in 20th Century Girl is played by Roh Yoon-seo. Embarrassing to discover that when I've watched that and Crash Course more than once. And I've also seen her in Our Blues and Black Knight. I'm not usually someone who doesn't recognize faces or remember names, so I'm going to chalk my ignorance up to her disappearing into the role. lol

Great pick with Kim Hieora! You nailed it. She went from relatively unknown to budding star is a very short about of time. She more than impressed me in The Glory and I didn't even know that I've seen her before in Attorney Woo

Shim Dal Gi who played our tragic villainous ghost in REVENANT. That was THE performance, and she didn't pale a bit near blazing fire that was KTR. Tho apparently she's been around for a while. How many years exactly it takes for one to graduate from rookie-dom?

For a pure rookie actress within the last year, Jung Ho Yeon debuted in SQUID GAME to rave reviews and a US talent agency contract.

Jo A Ram debuted in THE KILLER'S SHOPPING LIST in 2022 and was very good in DR. CHA.

To be honest I have seen everyone's works mentioned and I like them too, but no one come close to Kim Shi Ah in Kingdom: Ashin of the North. If you have not watched it, it's just a movie, so it's short, and she's even just the child role. But oh my god to talk about ability to ACT. She's truly the winner.

My votes go to the woefully underrated but heartbreakingly talented and charismatic Shin Go-Eun in Gangnam Scandal. It's the first drama in her filmography. She is a gem. And a spirited second vote to Kang Myung-Joo, who played the quietly heartbroken and regal mother in the 18th life in See You In My 19th Life. She lifts the level of mom acting in dramas way way high with her acting. I don't know where she came from, but dramas could use more of her magic.

Daebakgrits- If you had seen her performance in OUR BLUES you would be even more sure about Roh Yoon-seo. She is not just talented and skilled, she is magnetic: She has that special charisma that used to be what we meant when we described a performer or actor as a star.

Wow! Good selections by the DB team and the commentators.

My choice would be... Won Jin-an in D.P. She caught my attention in episode three. I didn't know they were the same actress while I was watching If You Wish Upon Me but Won Jin-an was outstanding in this drama and she didn't disappoint in Heartbeat.

There are a couple of rookie actresses from King the Land that I hope they get more roles and they are... Kim Jung-min and Kim Chae-yoon. They worked with Sa-rang in King the Land.

And Seung-you (Rose from Heartbeat). I liked her in Heartbeat and the Golden Spoon.

No, Kim Yoo-Jung may be just turning 23 but has more than 10 years old experience in showbiz since her days as a child actress, so she no longer counts as a rookie.

She even got her first lead role at 16 years old (a fantastic feat, no less) for Moonlight Drawn by Clouds - and even that one is a huge hit.

It depends on how you define "rookie." Some award shows define a new actor as one who has not been nominated before or had their first significant role, for example, their first lead role. Others define rookie as their work during the first year after their debut.

Choi Sung Eun!
She is superb in Beyond Evil. Her role is minor in this one but she captivated me with her beauty and acting in complicated character for such a rookie.
Then I watch the Sound of magic with her being in the struggle high school student-role which I don't recognize her at all.

And she is said to be the rookie that win the casting audition for female lead in new Netflix movie My name is Loh Kiwan with Song joongki.

She is surely versatile as an actress. Just waiting for her getting the main role in a hit movie or drama.

Apart from actresses already mentioned..

Shin Ye Eun - probably is not considered a Rookie anymore. She is good in most of her roles. Happy to see her being cast in Jung Ji In's (Red sleeve director) next drama with actress Kim Teari and Moon Sori. Waiting for this.

Han Ji Jyun: She was very charismatic in Cheer-up although the drama was meh. Looking forward to her next work.

Are we supposed to pick from the list above? Then my choice is Roh Yoon-seo from Crash Course in Romance. But the (very young and) rookie actress which I would be looking forward to is the adolescent girl (Kim Shi ah) playing Joo Won in "See you in my 19th life".

I'm not sure who do we call rookie actresses but if we talk about someone who rose to fame/prominent roles in the last few years who's in their 20s. I think the most impressive one would be Roh Yoonseo without a doubt. She had only been in a few stuff but she kills each and every one of it.

But also, I would like to mention both Roh Jung-eui, watching her ever since her teenage roles down to 18 Again and Our Beloved Summer was such a treat. There's something about her subtleness that is interesting to watch.

If we're talking more that hasn't been a lot of dramas yet (but they should!) then it's a crime not to mention Park Yoona (Secrest Forest, True Beauty), Lee Eunsaem (Black Dog, The Red Sleeve, All of Us are Dead), and.. Park Sewan (School 17, Just Dance, Alice ultimate weapon). While Park Yoona and Lee Eunsaem are barely in anything but I just find them very eye-catching EVERYTIME!, Park Sewan is in this kind of limbo where I wouldn't exactly call her a rookie actress but she also needs to be on my screen more with a good script of course.

I had never been impressed with a young actor before until I watched "our blues". I watched this movie because of actor Lee Byung Hun. And then I especially loved the role of Roh Yoon Seo, a class president who is good at studying and has a strong mind. Then I found out about this actor and watched "20세기 소녀", "일타 스캔들", "택배기사". I really like this girl, so I chose Roh Yoon Seo!
