You can only pick one: Short-form or web drama

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one short-form or web drama

missvictrix: Okay, brace yourselves! I’m going to pick the disastrous, metarific Lotte Duty Free Shop PPL web drama thingy that is commonly called Seven First Kisses. Truly, it is the best worst thing you’ll ever see! Our heroine gets magically dropped into seven equally and fantastically ridiculous K-drama romance scenarios and is oh-so-briefly pursued by — get ready — Lee Jun-ki, Park Hae-jin, Ji Chang-wook, Kai, Taecyeon, Lee Jong-seok, and Lee Min-ho. That is the power of the Lotte conglomerate imagination, when you watch this mini drama. And if you’ve just had a terrible day, trust me, watch this and you’ll be feeling loads better afterwards, even if it’s just from all the chortling you’ll do!

mistyisles: I deliberated between a few choices for this one, but my final pick is White Christmas! It’s very dark and heavy, and I remember concluding after my first viewing that its ending (intentionally) left me with more questions than answers and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. But it did hold up to a rewatch later (though it has now been years since then), and it gave me an undying love for its entire young cast. Unlike some K-dramas that I watched early on and am scared to go back to now for fear of tainting good memories, this is one that I do want to re-watch again, because I think there are a lot of aspects to it that I’ll appreciate more now that I have a different perspective on K-dramas in general (and on life, for that matter).

DaebakGrits: I didn’t even have to think about this one because Splish Splash Love is the standard by which I compare all other web dramas. The isekai genre is my all-time favorite, and Splish Splash Love is a cute little example of what happens when the heroine is magically transported to another world or — as is the case with this web drama — the past, and uses her skills (a.k.a. her limited knowledge of Hangul, history, and mathematics) to survive and thrive in her new reality. This web drama single-handedly made me a forever fan of Kim Seul-gi, and I’m still sad that we haven’t seen her in more leading roles. Overall, this was a fun story, and if the K-drama gods wanted to remake it as a full-length drama, I wouldn’t complain — so long as the ending gives us ample time to see Dan-bi reunite in the present with the reincarnated versions of all the historical figures she met while in the past. (My one complaint about the web drama is that there wasn’t enough modern day Yi-do (Sejong the Great).

Dramaddictally: I’m going with the recently aired drama One Day Off. This thing blew my mind. At only eight episodes (roughly a half hour each), it made a big impression with everything from its genre-hopping to its narrative, themes, and visual storytelling. Focusing on the everyday life of a teacher who takes one-day trips to escape the monotony, it manages to address love, politics, family, aging, death, and other eternal questions in bite-sized chunks that feel very current and of the times. Lee Na-young is masterful in this role as she interacts with all the one-day characters she meets along the way. Generally, I find that short-form dramas have a hard time developing a full story and leave me feeling like something is missing. But this drama understands the short-form medium and exploits it in the best way possible. Rather than a drama, it feels like an extended independent film — but even that is not giving it enough credit for how artfully it pulls off what it’s trying to do.

I just started To Jenny. I love everything about it so far (I adored the ML as the SML in Our Beloved Summer so definitely looking forward) and that kid? She is adorable. S.Korea must have some kind of mines where they mine these jaw dropping gorgeous men and insanely talented child actors.

TO: JENNY is probably the best "short series" (2 episodes).

But for something really short (21 minutes), shot only on an iPhone, LIFE IS BUT A DREAM (2022) by director Park Chan-wook is remarkable.

Clearly my favorite short drama is “To.Jenny”. A story which made me smile for more than two hours. Lovely.

Another favorites of mine are “The happy loner” and the KBS Drama Special “Understanding of dance”.

If we count longer (several episodes) dramas, I can add “Girls Generation 1979” or “Vivid Romance”.

So if I can only pick one, that one is Splish Splash Love for all the reasons @daebakgrits cites, and despite the woefully/comically green performance from baby Ahn Hyo-seop.

I did quite like To.Jenny and would recommend it, but I have to agree with @missvictrix that Seven First Kisses is wonderfully, magically, intensely terrible and brings new meaning to "so bad it's good."

There are so many good KBS special dramas in addition to the webdramas or short ones.

Adolescent Medley : My first drama with Kwang Dong-Yeon. The story was cute and the OST was great.

Like Otters : it was about 2 lonely teenagers. Ro-Woon from KTL was way better used in this one.

The Palace : the story is about the friendship between a maid and the Queen. There was almost no male character.

Everything and Nothing : the theme of prostitution among teenagers is pretty rare.

The 8th Sense : It's a BL drama but the drama was more focused on grief and on the transition from a student life to a working one.

Splish Splash Love : of course for the couple. They were great. And KSG in a main role, finally!

I am with @mayhemf. I really quite liked the short drama You Drive Me Crazy starring Lee Yoo-Young and Kim Seon-ho.

Sure, the plot is basically the tired old story of whether or not men and women can really be friends, but it's done really sweetly in my estimation. The FL is wonderfully imperfect and our ML has his pros and cons as well.

There's also a scene when our main couple is fighting that takes place in a narrow, empty street at night whose banter and staging seemed much more like a stage play than a filmed drama, and I was quite taken by its presentation.

Whenever I walk by the imprints of shoes that were made on a sidewalk when the concrete was wet these days, I think of this drama.

Thank you for mentioning this one, I had not seen it before and I loved it. The OST was perfect for them too. It’s the second drama I have watched recently where they had a pet hedgehog. Really surprised they are being promoted as pets. I wonder if it was a fad as one drama was from 2018 and the other 2020 and I have not seen it in any other drama.

7 first kisses is SUCH a throwback!

I watched that, My Secret Romance and Noble, My Love in quick succession and was convinced dramaland was the most cheesetastic place in the world 😅.

I haven't watched very many of these (but I'm ready to take everyone else's picks as recommendations!), but I'm going to have to agree with @daebakgrits and go with Splash Splash Love. In fact, I literally just finished rewatching it last night and it was even better than I remember. I love the doppelgangers of all the people in her life that she meets in the past, and then when it happens in reverse with the few remaining characters at the end! And I always find it fascinating when actual historical characters show up in dramas. I'll just be over here watching my favorite parts and impatiently waiting for Yoon Doo-joon to star in something else.

I know it's a drama special so that's why it's counted but I just cannot think of White Christmas as a short form drama... 😅
I mean, if you count it, are you also counting all the 6-10 episode "full" form dramas that AREN'T specials? Lol

(It was before it's time, in so many ways. It would do numbers if it came out now, new, on Netflix. But it's 12 years old instead 😂)

6
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'd count anything 8 episodes or under as "short", at least for K-dramas, although obviously there are shows in this length range that weren't released as "drama specials".

2
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's exactly my point though.

Newer streaming only dramas like My Name, Black Knight, D.P., Weak Hero, even the two halves of the Glory as stand alones, aren't thought of the same way as web dramas, mini dramas or the majority of the "short" dramas as seen and mentioned here, and for good reason, in my opinion.
But White Christmas at 8 full hour episodes, is considered so because of how it was released, even though it's got more in common with shorter streaming only dramas, than it does with say, Splash Splash Love, or To. Jenny, which are basically a movies, or Wednesday 3:30PM with it's 20 minute episodes.

I think the definition of what exactly is meant here, needs to be clarified more, either individually, as you have done, or in general, because to me, there are at least two kinds of "short form" drama being discussed, and they're both very different. 😂

6
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I suggest going with total time (whatever that threshold may be) instead of number of episodes. I was going to mention Noble, My Love which is twenty episodes but fifteen minutes each, so total run time is five hours. I found that series cute but with all those short episodes I forgot where I was and never finished it.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I personally would count the shorter streaming-only shows, but maybe that's because the really short 1 and 2 episode drama specials do feel more like movies to me than dramas, at least structurally. Given that the first several k-dramas I ever watched were all 50 episodes or more though, my definition of "short" is probably a bit skewed.

Web dramas are my go to when I want a quick k drama fix Love playlist is my favourite. I also enjoyed Scripting your destiny, A teen, Let me off the Earth, and It’s ok to be sensitive.

I have to add Two lights: Relumina in the category of drama adverts. It raises the issue of the impact of losing sight at a young age and promotes a device that enhances limited sight. It holds a special place because it was the first ‘drama’ we watched alongside Everything and nothing in our Watch and Discuss K drama club.

I love KBS specials and one of my favourites is The taste of curry which was one of my first K drama watches and amazed me because the OST included Malaika, a Swahili song. I really want to know how it came to be included.

The man’s voice is a 2 part drama which I thought was really funny because it captured the attitude of a cat so perfectly.

@Anne18 Do watch it. As someone who had personaly seen someone go through this horrifying disease, this movie gave me a front seat show of what truly my friend's life has been like. Much like Han Ji Min's character, she is beautiful, resilient, does not appreciate anyone feeling sorry for her; From an RN she eventually became a much sought after fitness instructor, her medical background giving her an edge many others do not have. It gave me a lot of insight about how lacking in something might eventually enhance other senses we did not know existed.
I also loved the piano piece in this (and the hands that played them lol! Ugh, that pesky hand fetish).
Oh! I remmber making an appointment with my Opthalmologist right after this movie and having a lot more respect for him.
(Spoiler)
This drama is also one of those that made me think about their characters and their future - beautiful couple with a heriditary disease. Chances are their kids or grandkids can inherit it, though it's quite rare it seems. Perhaps, they would be better geared towards guiding their children were it to happen to them? Does Soo Seo eventually take up what he is truly talented in? Reading music for blind people is not new, there are many mega successful blind musicians in the world (Steve Wonder for example).

🤣 @attiton Give the naked fireman a try. Watched it recently. The story wasn't airtight, but can't ask for better in a 4 episode murder-mystery cum rom-com (which are surprisingly, anything but discordant together). And thankfully, the fireman (Lee Joon-hyuk) who can set you ablaze with his hotness is not so naked, even though he offered to be 😆

2

@midnight assuming you've also watched APAD, I wanted to share an amusing similarity between the two dramas 😅. When Lee Joon-hyuk is sending off his mentor, the latter asks him if he had eaten (names some dish). To this Lee Joon-hyuk asks "Can you read my mind?" with the same wide-eyed innocence that a drunk Woo Bo-young asked Lee Joon-hyuk's character in APAD. His characters are polar opposite in the two drama. And the male-female dynamic is completely flipped here and there 😂.

1

@anne18 So, this word, "thankfully," are you sure that's what you meant? 😈

One of my close friends, a nurse, developed this in her early 30s,her symptoms showing up in the middle of the road while she was driving home from work. She is one of the most resourceful and happy woman I know, raised two fabulous kids (has a super supportive and loving husband) but through this movie, I recognized her everyday struggle. The way PHS's character struggles with accepting his life, I kept wordering how difficult it must have been for her knowing she might not be able to see or recognize her own kids as they grow up. But as it ended, I realized how resilient human beings can truly be, especially if they have someone to love and be loved in return, and have a supportive community.

Every short-form drama seems like a good enough drama to recommend to someone. So here I am recommending all of them (except, forgive me Soundtrack#1 🥱). What can you possibly not like about these tiny bundle of joys? They help a lot during drama slumps! However, Eun-joo's Room, if it can indeed be put in this category is a standout drama for me. It will always be in my top 3 overall, and besides how relatable the heroine is, what's good is you can finish it in 6 hours!

If you don't even have that much time try this https://youtu.be/JjgNT-BF30A

Another short sweetie I watched recently is Her Bucket List.

And... I know keep repeating all these recommendations like a drum that keeps beating itself 🥁😬 but... Have a Nice Dessert / Drunk in Good Taste is definitely sweet!

And a big yes to Page Turner, You Drive Me Crazy!

And... Lee Joon-hyuk fans please listen to The Naked Fireman recommendation. Both his character, and the story is very brave!

I must admit I have not watched too many but my favorite in the list is:
1) Soundtrack #1 - There something about this melow, beautifully paced simple love story that makes you as warm and cuddly as the scarf Seon Wo keep tying around Eun-So. Completely missing many of the K-drama tropes, this has been my comfort watch many a weekends. Plus point is it's dubbed in English so sometimes I watch it when working, sipping my hot Chamomile tea.
2) Splash splash love: Like others, I loved it.-The chemistry was so cool (though the King did not really look or act much like a King lol!) This was my first Seguek. The ending was quite thought provoking - how the King and the Queen are reborn as common people while the musician has found success, at least that's how I saw it.I have always felt Mr Queen was inspired by this.
