Behind Your Touch: Episodes 7-8

Though our psychic vet can see into other people’s memories, the truth continues to elude her as a series of deaths occur in their quiet town. Lifelong relationships are put to the test as neighbors begin to question each other and wonder who among them could be capable of such heinous crimes. Our heroes can only trust each other as they dig deeper into this case, and everyone is a suspect until proven innocent.

EPISODES 7-8

Behind Your Touch: Episodes 7-8 Lee Min-ki Han Ji-min

A serial killer is on the loose, and it’s up to Jang-yeol and Ye-boon to catch them. However, even with Ye-boon’s psychic abilities, there are far too few clues and way too much overlap to narrow down their search. Though they know the killer wears a green poncho and used a flowery kitchen knife, nearly everyone in town owns those exact items, which means anyone could be the killer.

By the time they find the other victim (the streamer who was kidnapped before), the whole town goes into hysterics over these ominous events. They hold a town hall meeting to discuss what to do, and the debate boils down to holding a rite or installing security cameras.

Meanwhile, Jang-yeol decides that if everyone is a suspect then Ye-boon will touch every single butt there is to catch the culprit. Thus begins their butt-touching-box service and Ye-boon’s hilarious attempt at being a thug, but so far, no one is a match let alone a lead. Luckily for Jang-yeol, the town decided to hold a rite, which means everyone will be gathered in one place for Ye-boon to use her powers.

During the rite, Shaman Park Jong-bae suddenly becomes possessed by the victims, and a woman’s voice tells the crowd that her killer is here among them. The foreboding message lingers in the air as the group disperses, and the seeds of mistrust are planted.

As the weight of the situation dawns on Ye-boon, she begins imagining how the killer will target her next, but Jang-yeol assures her that he will be her weapon and protect her. His swoon-worthy declaration seems to affect Ye-boon, but alas, no amount of unintentional chivalry will alleviate her worries so instead she dons Ok-hee’s helmet to cover her face. Pfft.

With helmet-wearing Ye-boon by his side, Jang-yeol receives a tip about a possible third victim — a missing coffee delivery lady — so they retrace her last steps. Their investigation sends them down a string of butts (including Sun-woo’s, which means his name is cleared for now), and once they find the crime scene, everything screams “murder” a bit too conveniently.

Since no body was recovered, Jang-yeol prioritizes finding the missing lady alive rather than catching the serial killer, and the next leg of their investigation leads them to the psychic cow farmer. When they begin questioning him, the cow farmer says that he hardly interacted with the missing lady, but Ye-boon knows that he is lying. Having seen his memories, Ye-boon recalls the two of them having a close relationship, and suddenly, everything the farmer does looks suspicious.

After dragging Jang-yeol away by calling his legs weak (much to his protests otherwise), Ye-boon tells him that the cow farmer has the same powers as her. She wonders why she did not see him kill the others if he is the culprit, but Jang-yeol simply tells her that it all makes sense. Before he can explain, the cow farmer leaves in his truck, and our ragtag team chases after him.

While tailing the cow farmer, Ye-boon and Jang-yeol lose him in the busy market, and she ends up following after him on her own. Just as her phone dies, the cow farmer pops out, and the two psychics circle one another, evenly matched in both power and skill. As she grapples with the cow farmer, Jang-yeol arrives right on cue, but instead of coming to her rescue, he gives her a passing glance and walks away. Ha!

Behind Your Touch: Episodes 7-8 Lee Min-ki Han Ji-min

Having figured out the truth a while ago, Jang-yeol finds the missing lady safely hiding and escorts her out. They return just as the fight between the psychics turns into a weird shaking contest, and in the end, the cow farmer wins.

As the case winds down, Jang-yeol reveals what actually happened (the lovers staged her death in order for them to run away from her debt), and though her situation is unfortunate, our strict detective will not let them off the hook. Before heading to the police station, Ye-boon shares a conversation with her fellow psychic, and the cow farmer says that he trusts her boyfriend. Heh.

Besides the lovey-dovey moments he saw between Ye-boon and Jang-yeol, the cow farmer mentions something odd: someone else was with them on the day of the meteor shower. This revelation is news to Ye-boon, and she realizes that this means another psychic is out there and they know about her ability. It seems her tall tale about being the next victim may not be so far-fetched after all.

Behind Your Touch: Episodes 7-8 Han Ji-min

What a great mid-series twist! While I don’t necessarily know how this would work out logistically (didn’t they need to be touching the cow?), the sudden tension a third psychic brings to the show is just the kind of mystery-thriller element I think the show needs. There is already a growing sense of unease as our protagonists slowly realize that anyone could be the killer, including the people they once trusted, so the added element of psychometry to this mystery enhances the suspense. Ye-boon isn’t the only one with access to people’s memories now, and the powers she used so indiscriminately may come back to haunt her. It could become a double-edged sword down the road since in order for Ye-boon to use her powers, it allows the other psychic to use theirs as well. As a result, as our heroes whittle down the suspects list, their chances of getting caught also increases.

Though I like the current dynamic between Ye-boon and Jang-yeol, there’s no denying that these two will/should end up together (they practically act like a couple in everyone else’s eye). They’ve been opening up to each other unconsciously for a while now, and despite their bickering, there’s a lot more endearment hidden underneath their complaints and squabbles. I find it cute that Jang-yeol says the most romantic things to Ye-boon without an ounce of romance, and her reactions are equally adorable because of how easily elated and then deflated she gets because of him. Also, with the existence of a hidden psychic, Ye-boon and Jang-yeol will be forced to rely on each other even more since the slightest touch with anyone else could jeopardize their safety and reveal all their secrets, so it only seems like the natural progression for them to finally see what everyone around them has been saying about their relationship.

Behind Your Touch: Episodes 7-8 Lee Min-ki Han Ji-min

Besides our main pairing, the show also spent some time this week developing the other love lines. For Aunt Hyeon-ok, her relationship with Jong-muk finally makes some progress as both characters overhear the other’s true feelings, and the introduction of Hyeon-ok’s scummy ex-husband lit a fire under Jong-muk to finally act. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Hyeon-ok and Jong-muk romance scene without some twist, and true to form, our middle-aged lovers run off like teens only to stop by the hospital to check out his bad knee. Heh.

The other romance line revolved around Ok-hee, and her story was one of the highlights for me. While her crush on Jang-yeol was funny at first, I was happy to see the show take her down a different path and stress her friendship with Ye-boon over her infatuation with Jang-yeol. It wasn’t about giving up on love for her friend’s sake but emphasizing that friendship is just as precious and important as romantic relationships. The cherry on top, though, was Ok-hee’s new crush on Da-eun’s brother, and the visual gag of Jang-yeol turning into a squid (a common symbolism in Korea to denote an unattractive person) was both terrifying and hilarious.

@lovepark Thank you for the recap

Ep 8 was a laugh riot. I got seriously invested in the killer chase, momentarily forgetting that the drama's premise was hinged on being nuts that the chicken dance vs twerking face off took me off guard and when my brain started to click again, I enjoyed the red herring so much that everytime I rewound the scene, I had fits of laughter from noticing each character's expression. Absurdity indicates this show's ingenuity as much as squid face indicates Ok Hui's crush 😂😂

As I expected, the drama sailed the "Unni" and Ok Hui ship that I no longer am disappointed with the slower pace of Ye Bun and Jung Yeol's relationship. That french conversation was chef's kiss and Unni guy slapping the high schooler and saying it hurts me more was a parody of Jang Nara's character in "School 2013" kdrama. Coffee girl Ae-Ran's backstory is also a reference to Kdrama recent tropes where the old sibling is frustrated with the responsibility of looking after the younger sibling, so lies and goes to play with friends, only to come back home to hear that the younger sibling is lost/dead (Link: Eat, Love and Kill and Strangers Again)

Han Ji Min and the directing team are doing a commendable job because there are so many scenes that could quickly turn sour, but they are all holding well on their own. For instance, subtle comedy can be trickey, especially for non-comedians, but the scene where Ye Bun was trying to slap a sticky note on the butt was enacted as casually as if it were the character's daily job with a squint-eyed wide smile and sing-song voice.
Same goes for being gullible which can become aggravating, but there were two set ups which ended up being laugh-out-loud funny.
1. When Ye Bun was putting together the criminal's thought pieces of being anxious with Ok Hui, she had a delayed dawning of the truth with Ok Hui's expression mirroring that of viewers which is "she is so simple minded to a fault of being understood as dumb".
2. When Jang Yeol interrupted Ye Bun's narration of her imaginary death in a storyboard fashion, she cut him off and went on to finish it with utmost sincerity.

Lee Min Ki is known for comedy, but here his character is not written much for him to go beyond the expressions of side eye or exasperated looks. I read that the latter half of the show will have less comedy with the mystery taking the forefront, so I am glad that they made the mystery part to be interesting with the killer being one of the villagers.

I do not see any foreseeable conmection between Ye Bun mom's suicide and the serial killing. It could be that there are two killers with the election guy being the obvious suspect for Ye Bun mom's death, but then the drama could change it into another red herring. I would be bummed if the motive behind serial killing turns out to be a reason similar to "My perfect Stranger" kdrama. That's lousy writing.

I was wondering what the hand-slapping punishment was a reference to! Thanks for reminding me!

Ye-bun's narration of her inevitable end was LOL since that was sort of how I expected such a story to unfold - minus her death.

No thoughts just Jang-yeol telling Ye-bun that he’ll be her weapon.

Lol jk.

At the end of episode 6/beginning of episode 7 I was concerned that everything was going down too serious of a route, but my fears were quickly assuaged by the snake antics, LOL. I had my doubts about how they would balance things, but I’ll be satisfied if they keep it like what we had this weekend. It isn’t quite as zippy as the previous episodes, but I’m actually liking how they’re developing Ye-bun and Jang-yeol’s relationship alongside the investigations so far!

When I started watching this drama I wasn’t really expecting or anticipating any romance, but the super duper slow burn between Ye-bun and Jang-yeol has me on the edge of my SEAT oh my gosh. They both are very slowly realizing that maybe they care about each other in more than just a “solving crime while touching butts” kind of way, and it’s actually done incredibly organically. Color me surprised. Also, Han Ji-min said in a video recently that the PD contacted her with this drama and said he would “make her into a romantic comedy queen” with it, which I find amazing and hilarious, so I am very excited to see how this develops!

I wish we’d gotten just a BIT more on that front this weekend, but we did get:
-Ye-bun insisting on following Jang-yeol so he wasn’t alone
-Jang-yeol telling her to get out of the car, but without actually putting up a fight and saying it in the softest way as if he both knew she wouldn’t listen and he didn’t want her to
-Ye-bun thinking about him (even when she was brushing her teeth) and constantly looking across the way to his rooftop to see if he had come home
-Ye-bun’s Seonwoo filter temporarily transferring to Jang-yeol when he said “I need you… to help me find a serial killer” LOL.
-THE HEAD PATS. And Ye-bun’s face when he tells her she did a good job!!!
-Jang-yeol’s smile when she comes back after her (hilarious) gangster play-acting
-My absolute favorite: “I’m your weapon”. It sounded straight out of a sageuk romance and I don’t think Jang-yeol even knew what he was saying! 😭 She’s his crime detector (I saw someone on Reddit say “pocket CCTV” fjsjsjd), he’s her weapon, and I’m SO into this. Two weirdos falling in love is my favorite romance genre.

@mayhemf mentioned how great both actors are at advancing all of this in their expressions without actually explicitly saying anything, and it’s so true. It’s just a joy seeing actors of their caliber working together and I can’t wait to see more, both as the show goes on and in another project that they will definitely do together that maybe is a bit more explicitly romantic (let me be delusional, okay?).

Also, I am SO pleased with how they took Ok-hui’s storyline in episode 7. They didn’t drag out her jealousy over Ye-bun and Jang-yeol too long and she realized how silly she was being and I was so satisfied. And then we got THAT scene with her and the teacher and I was in TEARS from laughing so...

…hard!! Someone on Reddit actually said that Ok-hui’s actor Joo Min-kyung actually studied abroad in France, which explains why her French was so much better than his, LOL. Dramatic fall, heroic catch, cheesy, ridiculous lines in French, and fireworks to boot! They really went all out for them, lmao!

The way they dealt with Ae-ran made me appreciate something about this show that I have been noticing throughout the run. This show makes almost everything and everyone a punchline, but it didn’t make Ae-ran being taken advantage of a punchline, it didn’t make Ali’s struggle as an immigrant a punchline, and it didn’t make the brief appearance of a trans character a punchline.

I’m not saying these are perfect examples of representation or social issues or anything (and I don’t expect anything of the sort from this show) but I respect the show for not stooping to that level even when they’ve got their heroine going around touching butts. Because I’ve seen shows make jokes about all of these things before and it always rubbed me the wrong way, so this show doing the bare minimum by not going there is appreciated.

Detective Na has some serious internalized misogyny going on, so I’m hoping they address that and make her confront it.

Overall, this show is still a ton of fun and I’m really looking forward to see how they develop the relationships in the second half!

Thank you for the recap @lovepark. This is still the drama I look forward to the most every week. I thought it will be getting darker due to the serial murder case but Episode 8 give me a lot of laughs. This is a drama that is a good stress reliever after a stressful week of work. I laugh at how Ye bun acted as a thug lol. I think that this drama is funny and heartwarming because most of the characters are doing well with their roles. Episode 8 is funnier for me. The long imagining of ye bun's death, the crying in the story of Ae ran, the showdowb with the cow farmer lol. I adore Han ji min but I adore her more watching how good she is in every scene. This drama is getting more interesting and I am looking forward the most to what will happen to ye bun and jang yeol. 2 of the villagers already thought they are a thing. And I am expecting that if the writer have given a good story arc on her aunt and ok hui, I am sure the slow burn romance between ye bun and jang yeol will be worth the wait!

This show is So much fun. I don’t mind the murder elements et al. It works well here. The leads continue to be delightful and I am loving them more as the episodes go. They are definitely an ‘item’ 😀

My favorite scenes that I remember
> ok hee realizing her misstep and correcting it right away. Kudos girl.
> snakes and their butts.
> Shaman sneaking in a rite PPL innocently. Lol.
> Da-Eun’s brother and ok-Hee moments with fireworks!
> Sebastian Wernerbe Berber Caburiels Stravos
> The Helmet!!
> Bong and Gwang-Sik’s face off. Lol. And our detective walking past them 😂😂
> I am your weapon 🥰🥰🥰

I love this show. It is such a joy to sit down and watch each episode.
Somehow the balance of ridiculous and zany moments work in combination with the darker aspect. There are heartfelt moments and the comedy is not at anyone's personal expense.
While it obviously helps that the writing is clever, the actors are really outdoing themselves with the comedy.
The two leads are killing it, especially the FL as she has to do the more wacky aspects.
Sitting on the back of the bicycle with Suho and watching her gleeful smile while trying not to fling her arms around him, just pinching his jacket. There was no dialogue and hardly any physical action, she's sitting on the back of the bicycle but it was so funny.
Again, dressed as the tough chick with the red lipstick, hardly any dialogue but hilarious.
I like that the ML's comedy tends to be more deadpan and it flys under his own radar, he is oblivious to it as his character is more serious.
I really wouldn't care if there wasn't any romance whatsoever as they are so great bouncing off one another.
However, it does feel very organic in the way they have slowly become closer to one another. I hope the show doesn't rush it.

I was going to say the same thing about humor. I love that the jokes are not at someone’s expense. In fact the two people who were the butt of few jokes is actually the leads. Be it her balding head or him getting hit by a dog bowl. That’s where the show shines.
It has not treated any side character disrespectfully. They all stand on their own and hold their own. They don’t serve any purpose for the leads. Even 2ML isn’t there just for a love triangle. This is why there is no dull moment. I am invested in all the characters.

It was nice to see the shaman’s shamanism actually work. It gives a little credence to the absurd fantasy elements of the show. As I said early on, the show gives off Camilia Blooms vibes which puts the serial killer thread right in line with CB’s plot fault.

But adding another psychic as a serial killer is going slightly overboard. The deceptions are getting more numerous so if the writer’s intent is to drag this out to the end then that is a problem.

The suspects are down to Grandfather, Candidate No. 1 and the potted plant man at the office where the coffee shop woman's last contact before fleeing to the dairy farm. The coffee shop owner is running an indentured servant debt scheme which needs to be outed since she is a de facto crime boss. Candidate No. 1 is getting the vibe of a sleazy politician who will profit if the town is raised for development, hence the property value drop because of the murders. Grandfather continues to lurk in the shadows with blank stares (maybe split personality? Dementia?)

As for the romances, pretty meh. Our leads should continue as unwanted partners in crime (literally). I never bought Ok-Hui and the Teacher's emotional affair. The captain and aunt, well, some things were never meant to be.

For me, grandfather is unlikely to be the murderer, but is definitely going to bring a further twist. We know he hated Candidate No. 1 in the past and then suddenly did a 180 to join his campaign. Smacks of grandfather's own personal agenda to get revenge for something done in the past - which then would also make sense of him swiping the donors list earlier on - but I can't see him actually murdering people to get back at the Candidate.

I'm pretty sure his failure to acknowledge Ye-bun is connected to his revenge plot: possibly something happened to her parents due to Candidate No. 1, grandfather knows about it and has sworn to get even, deciding to avoid Ye-bun on every level so that she is not complicit with what he's doing. Completely ignoring her as protection.

@lovepark

Thank you for the recap.

Love your collective noun "a string of butts" 🤣 😂 🤣

Your screenshots are perfect ... especially the two crouching psychics ... drama doesn't leave any opportunity to go "butt" first.

"Jang-yeol says the most romantic things to Ye-boon without an ounce of romance ...". Deadpan is an art Lee Min-ki excels in. You're spot on, Han Ji-min's hilarious reactions are what really elevate their scenes together. As they say acting is all about reacting and these two veteran actors really know how to play-off each other for maximum laughs.

The third psychic reveal twist came at perfect time and really adds to the tension. Maybe there was another meteor shower psychic power dispensing cow on hand, or maybe they touched the same cow while the two know psychics were passed out
... I do seem to remember a bright light and then they were both knocked off.

The Aunt and Police Ahjussi love track doesn't interest me at all ... except that fencing scene (channeling 25-21) ... that was just awesome 👌. I may or may not have watched it on loop ... just saying. The runaways stopping at the hospital was lol.

Ok-hee is a character I love ... even her introductory scene spewing words at Ye-boon was perfect. The actor has a thin line to walk to not let the character become farcical. And the squid eeks  ... it still has Lee Min-ki's distinctive lips !!

Joo Min Kyung manages to imbue Ok-hee's character with so much warmth. Her eccentricities are loveable, she is musical (plays the accordion), is a great friend not just to Ye-boon but her entire girl gang. She's the one friend we all want to have in our corner. Ok-hee is my most favorite drama character this year and I want to be her friend. I will always go to her store and will not set foot in Suho's store.

Isn't the show making Suho look sus. If all the years of drama watching have taught us anything then it is probably a fake-out. Obviously there must be a twist after all why would Suho take up the role ... is he a gangster, drug dealer, little brother of the Seoul drug dealer our ML is after, undercover police officer, what exactly is Suho upto.

I understand why people are finding it difficult to relate to a show which makes believe that touching a cow while caught in meteor shower will make you psychic.

All in all a wild ride ... I am looking forward to the hijinks of our otp, Ok-hee, her brother and even the shaman. Ok-hee's brother has some awesome translation skills ... makes me wonder how our drama watching experience would be like if he was in charge of the subtitling!!

I'm starting to think that Suho possibly is the politician's son who he abandoned when he was really young after Suho's mother died. On rewatching the episodes, Suho makes a lot of cryptic comments especially in the episode with Tofu being found buried and abandoned. The way he looks at the politician as well, something doesn't feel right.

Question about the coffee shop delivery girls. Were they implying that they were also doing other things besides delivering coffee? Or am I just being suspicious after watching "Moving"? Is that a common thing in Korea?

Someone asked a similar thing elsewhere, and I gave the best answer I can give based on other dramas I have seen with those sorts of coffee shops (if someone has more info, please let me know!):

Yes, I believe they are indeed implying that here. Old-fashioned coffee shops in South Korea are called “dabang”, and they have a long history, although they have largely been replaced by your Starbucks-esque cafe culture. While the majority of these places do/did operate as just coffee shops, some also offer sexual services. From what I’ve gathered, they’re very rare in highly urban areas like Seoul but are not uncommon in more rural areas, for a variety of reasons. These activities are illegal, and are sort of akin to the room salons you find in Seoul nowadays (you know, those private rooms where gangsters and villains often hang around). On the surface they’re “just bars” or “just coffee shops”, but they often have seedy goings on as well. I think it comes down to whether there is proof of these goings on occurring as to whether anything is actually done about them, because again, they also do actually serve coffee.

I’m sure others have experienced what Ae-ran has experienced with being trapped by debt to her boss, and I’m hoping that boss gets what she deserves by the end!

Thanks for the info!

I thought the officers were being overly judgy and dismissive of her that it made me wonder, but then they seem to be actively dismissing every bad thing that’s happening in the town so it was harder to tell. (And the male officers blew off this case right after they blamed the female officer for her husband’s constant cheating so it was like a double whammy of misogyny oi.)

FWIW I don’t think the other officers were blaming Detective Na for her husband cheating, unless you’re referring to something from an earlier episode I don’t remember! But her reaction disappointed me the most, and I hope they address the issues she in particular has with internalized misogyny. The reaction to Ae-ran’s disappearance was so sad and true to life, and I’m really glad that Ye-bun and Jang-yeol listened to her coworker. It made me glad that they showed that Ae-ran is someone who is loved, deserves safety, and has her own story. I’ll be curious to see if they revisit this and how they’ll handle it. I don’t expect any big social commentary from this show but they’ve ultimately shown sympathy for marginalized characters and I’m pleased so far with that.

I don’t remember the exact phrasing but the officers made a comment like, “why do you think your husband keeps cheating?” Like it was somehow just her fault. Might just be me interpreting it that way. The fact that it seems to be a running joke doesn’t thrill me, but I would be happy if they did take a scene to address it later, and give her a power moment!

100% agree I loved our MC’s reaction to the coworker and that there was zero judgment, just true concern. Loved loved loved it.

This drama does have hilarious laugh-out-loud moments but is slowly becoming into a dark noir. Let's see how that works out ig. As long as Ye-bun and Jang-yeol complete their enemies to lovers arc, I'm happy. I think they'd be really cute together. If only they realize what everyone else has :'(

you know who else is cute? Ok-hui and the French school teacher. match made in heaven tbh. will he call her UNNIE even after marriage tho?

I *never* skip the intro because that song is absolute FIRE but I *just* got the Dr. Rearview line 💀💀

Same! This show’s OST is lit! Parts 1-3 (HIPHOP, It’s You and GOTCHA) are so bop. Part 4, while mellow, is also good.

Thank you for the recap!!

The camera perspectives are always fun and interesting.

Holy cow! MacArthur Shaman is legit! Wait...so doesn't that meant MacArthur is a legit god??? I know he's taking too much advantage of his newfound fame, but I'm glad things are working out for him.

We know Da-eun's brother's long French name before he know his korean name! Guess he will forever be "Da-eun's brother".

The cops are right: the ones who go off alone are the first to die.

The duel was just amazing. I loved how it was all scary and tense and I was mentally shouting at Ye-bun for being such so reckless...and then Jang-yeol locking eyes with her and walking away brought a great twist - in more ways than one.

I hope the potential third psychic is a red herring. They didn't even touch any part of the cow.

This series has surprised me to no end. I am amazed at how well it has carried. I absolutely loved episodes 7 and 8 and adored Han Ji Min. I was getting a bit annoyed at her constant kiddish behaviour in the previous episodes, but 7 and 8 showed why she is such a great actress (her soliloquy about how the serial killer is going to catch her and when Jang Yeol interrupts, she is - "I AM NOT DONE YET! I AM JUST GETTING TO THE PART WHERE I GET KILLED....hahahahha!!!). Her expressions were gold, and so was Lee Min Ki's exasperation with her. Did I also see indulgence there? I did, you bet!
Lee Min Ki is acing it with whatever limited range he has been handed. His expressions when the two psychics played tag with each other's body parts and walked away were so good, lol!
I am sure he does NOT like it when she goes mooning after our convenience store cutie pie (good-looking guys like him are psychopaths, LOL!) - how he tries to dissuade her from following her crush around, hehehe!
But my favourite scene was when she bullies Jang-Yeol at the police station into assuring the coffee shop girl that they would help find Ae-ra! And he is like, "Yes, yes, of course!" hehehehe!
Their chemistry is off the charts. And the little lines of caring...it's killing me.

I love this show a lot--it makes me giggle every week. I'm just worried that it's going to devolve into something super-frustrating in the second half, like Heartbeat....
