Premiere Watch: A Time Called You

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Romance, time travel, fantasy
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Can you feel the hype? Netflix’s adaptation of the Taiwanese drama Someday or One Day has been long anticipated. And come Friday, we get to see if our Korean version matches the magic of the original. Jeon Yeo-bin is in the lead here as our grieving heroine. She gets to mysteriously/magically travel back in time to high school where she’s reunited with the lover she’s been mourning: Ahn Hyo-seop. Lucky girl. Also in the mix is everyone’s favorite up-and-comer Kang Hoon, who appears to be third-wheeling it (but beautifully). PD Kim Jin-won of My Country: The New Age is the helm, which bodes well for some emotional storytelling, so all that’s left to do is send out a wish that Netflix doesn’t muddle what doesn’t need to be muddled. Please, just let us be happy.

TL;DR: The Korean remake of Someday or One Day is finally here, so get ready folks!

I read that first line like the song from Lion King, “Can you feel the hype tonight” and cracked up 😆

I am looking forward to this so I can see if it was the lack of bonding with the characters in the original and not that I can not connect whichever version of the story is being told.

Netflix shared a sneak peek of an important scene on their YouTube channel and I must say I was rather disappointed? It just didn't seem to have the emotion of the original. But I'm still gonna watch it tomorrow 😅.

Yeah, what was that scene, really?! The emotions are missing (where is the melancholy and the despair?) And does the ML actor have a different interpretation for the high-school doppelganger character? Because he's too moony-eyed to be the wannabe-gangsta with a dash of mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
Also, I'm really upset at a Main Character no longer having a hearing-aid. 💔

+1 to all of the above. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt till I watch it in full though. Fingers crossed 🤞

Yes! After I watched the preview I wasn’t so enthused. Took me awhile to realize part of the draw of the original was how sad the FL was in the beginning and that made me really feel the rest of the drama.

It was great acting on the actress. This one seems shot well and has the look but not as much the feel. Maybe I just can’t resonate with the actress.

But I’m thinking if I go in without thinking about the original, it’ll prob be packaged well enough to be super watchable?

Noooooo! I hope it's amazing. However, if your expectations are really low then maybe this can only exceed your expectations. Remakes are always dangerous. Expectations have been set. Stick with the source material too close and it might be labeled as a failure for lack of creativity. Deviate from the source material too much and it will be a failure (ref See you in my 19th Life, or worse yet Avatar the last Airbender). It must be so hard as a writer - the pressure to come up with something better than a very well loved original.

That's so true! I've think you've nailed the problem on the head.

Of the two, I think I prefer when the remake differs. If they update things that are outdated, whether that's styles or, more importantly, social norms. Make the ladies more proactive! Give us more diversity! Get rid of a troubling subplot! These are changes that can greatly improve and refresh an original work while still holding true to its core story.

I think it's hard for a remake to excite and please fans of the original when that original was nearly flawless. That's the case here, so I expect that most who watched the Taiwanese version are going to be disappointed with the kdrama version.

Personally, I'm trying very hard to see them as two separate entities because my weekends are currently void of any interesting shows and I want that to change.

The problem is, if it's too different it'll just annoy people but if it's a shot by shot remake then why bother? Just go watch the original, which was perfection.

Also I do not believe that Ahn Hyo-seop has the chops to come even close to Greg Hsu. Which is a shame because Jeon Yeo-bin's casting seems kind of perfect.

This! Same with Kang Hoon - this is such goddamn good casting with both him and Jeon Yeo-bin, and this makes me a little excited to check it out. But I just don't trust Ahn Hyo-seop to give us even a fraction of what Greg Hsu has. He just ain't got it.

My most-awaited drama in this new season!! I'm very intrigued about how they are going to adapt the original Taiwanese, which it's a very special drama.

Pd: Kang Hoon looks great in that picture 👀

Ahn Hyo-seop - why he looks differently at different times? In the above photo, he looks exactly like Chan in 30 But 17. But his look in Business Proposal and Dr Kim S2 and 3 are a different look from that of 30 but 17. I thought he must have done bracing or something to his teeth to get to the BD look, and the 30 But 17 face was baby-ish given his age then. Yet, the above photo kind of reverting him back to Chan.

Am I the only one thinking this?

I think his face was... longer? as Chan in “30 but 17”.

You are not the only one thinking that.
First off, AHS’s actual age is 28 (as 17 April) and looks great imho. So he was 23 when he portrayed (if memory serves) the 17 year old Chan in 30B17 (2018). He looked the part to me. By the time of BUSINESS PROPOSAL (2022) he was almost 27 and to me he looked age appropriate for his character. With his recent dramas, in the promo pics I am seeing, he is reverting to looking more like Chan.

O/T. I think perhaps we should ask his adopted mom, our
own @ally-le what she is feeding him. New beanies may not be aware but during the live airing of 30B17 back in 2018 Chan was adopting by Ally.
She has two other adopted (kdrama sons) around the same age as Chan. (They could all be ‘Irish triplets lol).
Any guesses who the other two are?

As to what AHS is eating, he stated he trained and took up rowing to play Chan and was probably at least 20 lbs lighter from what I can tell. He’s face shape changes a lot with just a little bit of change in weight. As most actors can swing several lbs/Kg between shows, I wonder if he knows this and uses it to his advantage playing certain characters. Losing 5 lbs here and gaining 5 lbs there should be relatively easy for him at his age (and not at mine).

I hope this goes well. I believe that re-makes should only be done when the original was flawed and could have been done better. SOMEDAY OR ONE DAY was and remains a masterpiece - a new version was simply not needed. The best that we can hope for is that it is as good as the original- which would be great. It won't be better.

I know this sounds glib, but maybe Korean producers wanted to make it in their own language? That would be one reason to do a remake. Also, I never watched the original and may have never watched it, because I don’t watch a lot of Taiwanese dramas, and am happy to see a kdrama of a highly rated show. And with Ahn Hyo-seop, no less! I’ve been filling his career closely. So there’s that too. Anyway, definitely glad this show is here, even if it feels like it was made just for me.

Netflix seems to be banking on this series. They hired the hot pop group 'Newjeans' to do the featured OST. That must've cost 'em $$$.

Second, judging from the trailers it looks like a shot-for-shot remake of the original series. So they're unlikely to pull a 'Woori The Virgin' on us and discard 2/3rds of the original storyline.

I have faith in Jeon Yeo-bin to be a good female lead, but the big obstacle to redoing the series was always going to be finding an actor to replace Greg Hsu as the male lead.

I watched the first 5 minutes as I was running out the door for work. So far it's pretty close to a shot for shot remake. I'm having difficulty erasing the original from my brain. Where is my brain erase button? So far, so good though.

watched the first 3 eps and I'm dropping bcs I feel absolutely no chemistry between the two leads and I already liked kang hoon too much so I'm not here to see him being a second lead (I know nothing about the storyline so I'm just going of based on these 3 eps).

idk if there will be recaps since netflix dropped all the episodes at once, I think, but I would like to know if there's a place where i can just know what happens in this story without having to watch LOL

The chemistry did click for me until into episode 4. I also didn’t like the first at least 2 episodes, because of all the mourning—hard to feel chemistry when everyone is crying over someone dying, I guess. I’m more interested in the time jumps now.

I haven’t seen the original, and I’m only up to episode 5 now, but I think it has to do with getting the niece back to her timeline. Is she still stuck in the middle world? I think JJ must have gotten stuck there too when the plane crash happened and saw her or something and somehow got out and met her uncle and has a plan to get her back. I’m still wondering why In-gyu’s hearing aid is at the scene of the crime. 😆
