A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 3

It’s a good day to keep secrets! Whether it be dog-related secrets or the really mysterious ones, our characters work overtime to keep the lid on these aspects of their lives that are not public knowledge. But sometimes, being in the know of a person’s secrets is a surefire way of getting closer to them. And I, for one, am all about that closeness between our adorable leads.

EPISODE 3

What’s worse than transforming into a dog in front of your student and spending the night at his house? It’s waking up in your human form the next morning, and getting caught in the room by your student’s uncle — who’s also your colleague at work! Yep. This is the crazy I-can-totally-explain-this and it’s-not-what-you-think kind of situation that Hae-na starts off this week’s episode with.

But if you think that’s funny, you should see teacher Seo-won sitting both Hae-na and Yul down like students to demand an explanation for what went down under his roof the previous night. Heh. Hae-na throws Yul under the bus by informing Seo-won that everything started when she went to fetch him from the police station. And Yul gets his lick back by claiming that Hae-na spent the night because was drunk and fell asleep on the way home. Lol. I mean, Seo-won already thinks that Hae-na is in love with the bottle, so what’s one more drinking excuse? Besides, better that than revealing Hae-na’s transformation into a dog.

Seo-won is slightly hurt to hear that Yul called Hae-na to the police station instead of him, but Yul says he didn’t call because he didn’t want to worry his uncle. And this whole exchange served to highlight the genuine affection existing between the uncle-nephew duo. Awwww. I love them already.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 3

Monday morning comes, and we are treated to Seo-won cooking up a storm for his nephew. Yep, our “math and face genius” (in @missvictrix’s words), is also a cooking genius. We’re also treated to the sight of Yul acting like a puppy — which his dog-loving self can’t keep at home because of his uncle’s fear of dogs. That totally explains why he’s now buying treats for Hae-na, and he’s eager to see her transform again. Lol.

Speaking of which, the vice principal has to pet-sit his daughter’s dog — and the dog ends up in the staff room of all places! Cue: A startled Seo-won opon entering the room. Hae-na — who already knows about his phobia — spends the day going all out to prevent Seo-won and the dog from coming in contact with each other. She claims a sudden allergy to dog fur to get the dog to stay in a cage. When that doesn’t work, she literally shoves Seo-won out of the dog’s sight, and fakes a phone conversation to alert him that the dog went home and the staff room has been cleared for his return.

But is it really a K-drama if Seo-won doesn’t end up face to face with the dog? LMAO! That shot of man and dog staring at each other under his desk had me in stitches for several minutes! Other teachers walk in on Seo-won being all terrified on his desk, but thankfully, Hae-na arrives in time to pick up the dog, and come up with an excuse for him. She also critiques their colleagues’ backward thinking that adults aren’t supposed to be afraid of dogs. Seo-won’s eyes soften as he stares at her in adoration, and through a flashback to their first day as teachers in the school, we see that he fell for Hae-na at first sight. Awwww.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 3

Later on, Seo-won thanks Hae-na for her not-so-subtle attempts to help him cover up the fact that he’s afraid of dogs. To her credit, she doesn’t push further into the backstory behind his phobia. And like she did earlier at work, she disagrees with his self-deprecating assessment that being afraid of dogs as a grown man is embarrassing.

Truly, Hae-na would know this since embarrassing situations are an all-too-familiar concept to her — from drunk-kissing Seo-won, to pulling his hair at the escape room. There’s also the part where she slept at her student’s house while “drunk,” and turns into a dog every night since the kiss! Okay, that last part is a secret for now. Still, she tops Seo-won in the embarrassment department.

Hae-na’s point in all of this is that Seo-won never avoided her or thought that she was weird despite her antics, and she feels the same way about his fear of dogs. “We are not weird. It’s just the way we are,” she says, and you can tell that he just fell for her all over again. Hae-na gives Seo-won a dog keychain to “help him build up an immunity against dogs,” and with that, their eventful day comes to a lovely end.

Bonded by their secrets, Seo-won and Hae-na naturally grow closer. And instead of setting Hae-na up with Bo-gyeom like he promised last week, Seo-won ends up roping himself into spending more time with her. Lol. They go shopping to pick out a gift for their colleagues’ wedding — totally giving off shopping for their newlywed home vibes — and if we didn’t already know this from the dining hall scene last week, we see that Seo-won has quick reflexes. So, he’s a reflex genius as well. Nice!

Seo-won and Hae-na also make arrangements to attend the wedding together, and he shows up at their meet-up spot looking like the groom. As if that isn’t enough to get our hearts racing, one of the other teachers — who desperately wants to be a third wheel on Seo-won and Hae-na’s “date” — approaches. Cue: Seo-won’s Yellow Umbrella of Swoon to shade him and Hae-na from Ms. Third Wheel’s prying eyes. *Blushes* And this is where the drama wraps up for the week.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 3

Ms. Third Wheel is none other than YOON CHAE-AH (Lee Seo-el) — the monitoring spirit teacher with a big-time interest in Seo-won. Chae-ah stalked Seo-won’s movements long enough to spot Hae-na leaving his house the other day, and this led to her giving the “Back off of Seo-won” speech to Hae-na at work. Possessive much? Hae-na, of course, claims to not have any romantic interest in Seo-won. But you know how famous last words work, right?

Chae-ah also appears to have a secret of her own — and no, I’m not talking about the symmetry of her butt. (Why did we even need to know that? Is it because this is a dog show?) I’m referring to her seemingly super-rich status, because there’s no way she could afford all those luxury items on a high school teacher’s paycheck.

We can’t end the week of secrets without talking about The Suspicious Mr. Lee. Bo-gyeom who definitely knows more than he lets on — and he’s almost impossible to read. One minute, he’s releasing the vice principal’s dog to go after Seo-won, and the next minute, he’s setting up Seo-won and Hae-na for more interactions with each other. He also prefers to brood around in his camping spot, and says cryptic things like “I don’t know what I was in my past life, but I just love to be around nature.” Sir, who are you?

For now, we are nowhere close to unravelling the mystery that is Bo-gyeom. We are just left with more questions — like why he has a secret basement hideout that contains antiques and a suspicious wooden chest. And why he has flashbacks of a long-haired man wrapping a scarf around a woman’s neck in a Joseon-like setting. We also get a brief scene of the woman being chased in the woods, before returning back to the present where Bo-gyeom longingly gazes at the same scarf in the wooden chest. Hmmm.

In the meantime, the drama continues to be fun, and elicits tons of giggles from me. It’s obvious that the show doesn’t take itself too seriously — and we clearly need that light-hearted tone to balance out what I think will be the dark spots as we go on. Dark spots being: the origin of Hae-na’s family curse, the reason behind Seo-won’s dog phobia, and what seems to be a rather unnerving backstory that has been set up for Bo-gyeom.

Ah the power of montage scenes! I know some might see it as a writing cop-out but I think when done well, it really helps fill in gaps or enhance things in a time-economic way. I really liked the montage scene here that confirmed what many had already said last week about Seo-woo feeling a little more than ‘indifference’. So cute!!

Loved this episode a lot overall, lots of laugh out loud moments and I love that the ML is here to play cupid (I think??? I hope!) rather than be an actual love rival, because he’s a real cutie and although I’m all for the OTP, it’d be sad if he was sad too. Also gumiho vibes anyone? The glimpse at the two toned long hair in the Joseon flashback had me going ‘this looks familiar???’. The fairy-tale/kids movie/whimsical vibe is the best - hard hitting, high-octane fantasy is good but sometimes you just need some airy-fairy magical sparkles kind of fantasy to put a smile on your face. Especially if there might be some darker spots coming, as you pointed out too @unit.

I also had a little giggle over SW “solving” HN’s problem by buying all the cakes left - I know people in dramas always be doing the most, but this felt like a very chaebol move even though my dude is on a teachers salary (idk what it’s like in Korea, but if it’s anything like it is where I’m from, teachers don’t earn whole heap unfortunately 😭). But then looking at his house, maybe he’s already quite well off to begin with?

I’m a sucker for the kindness the OTP show each other without expecting anything in return. I love how respectful they are of each other’s secrets and idiosyncrasies. Quite a contrast to the typically pushy SFL who really doesn’t stand a chance.

It’s also fun that the nephew knows Hae-na’s secret — more potential for comedy hijinx. And we’ll have to see what the deal is with the potentially centuries-old SML playing Cupid who perhaps needs to atone for something in his distant past.

Finally, Hae-na‘s sister is hilarious and supportive. I’m so glad Hae-na has her people around to help her navigate life with the curse.

Yes, kindness without expecting something back is so beautiful! I particularly like the way Hae-na simply wants to help Seo-won maintain his dignity. She gets nothing from that, but she knows keenly what it feels like to be left in an undignified spot (every time she changes) and goes out of her way to ensure someone else doesn't have to experience that. Her devotion to the cause all day brought such a smile to my face!

Yes, I really liked that we're finally seeing Hae Na's kind personality, as in the webtoon. She didn't have to be so nice and considerate towards ML, but she's just a good person at heart… or maybe she already likes him, idk 😂.
And I really liked the montage of Seon-woo slowly falling for her, it was really well done. It wasn't just love at first sight 🥺

I am live-watching this because I've always liked Park Gyu-young and I want to see the beautiful Cha Eun-woo in motion. He is indeed gorgeous. I enjoyed the first 2 eps more than this ep. In ep 3, slow motions were overused. I know the leads, especially CEW, are charming human beings, but the slow motions didn't really elevate my feeling while watching, actually it kind of annoyed me.

In the first 2 eps when the back stories were set up, I understood the reserved expression of CEW, and in ep 3, I expected him to be more expressive but I think CEW didn't do really well. I can see micro-expressions are not his expertise, same with some other actors, such as Hwang Min-hyun, but I still enjoyed his performance and the show so far.

Yes, CEW did rather well in the setup, but you could see him stretch his limits in Ep. 3 when asked for more. (And I think we should both duck for cover : -)

Yeah, that's why I really wanted Seo-won played by someone like Yoon Hyun-min, someone who can be really expressive even when playing a cold and emotionally repressed character. Ohh well!

Yoon Hyun-min is really good at playing tsundere and still being so emotive. But won't he be little old to play Seo-won.

I guess if we an older actress like Gong Hyo-jin, gosh they would have really hit it out of the park.

Hmm, but the vibe would have been very different then. For now Cha Eun-woo in motion works fine. 🙂

This episode was really cute. I am so glad she changed her approach and did it with sensitivity. I also always love if the ML has the crush first, it just always works out better. Bo Gyeom is obviously supernatural, but what kind of supernatural, idk because I didn't read the spoilers in the descriptions. No guesses, but he is very mysterious and is shipping our leads, as am I.

Looks like Seo Won liked Hae Na from the first time he saw her. I found it incredibly sweet.
Seo Won thinks he is setting Hae Na up with Bo Gyeom and Bo Gyeom, maybe cos he saw her kissing him, seems to be setting Seo Won up with Hae Na(when he sees her in the cake shop and then calls to remind Seo Won of his promise to buy him cake) Hilarious.
Is Bo Gyeom a time traveler? Not sure how to read what we saw this week.
It’s bad enough this is one episode a week schedule, but Viki says next episode is in 2 weeks. Not sure if that is a mistake, but maybe binge watching this show might be the way to go.

Hae-na's dream sequence at the start... Why was everyone's lips so red?? Some real salted pollack roe vibes (iykyk)

This dream sequence was so over the top imo, I was just thinking, "why can’t we just stick to the webtoon’s plot line, lads?" T-T
although tbf, her imaginations are so chaotic it's funny… like, that dog collar looked so sus, very out of place in my wholesome doggy drama

Hae-na’s anti-fan coworker is just so extra, straight up stalking the poor man… but why does she seem so rich in the drama? Getting driven around by a chauffeur and everything??
Don't tell me we're getting more evil chaebol characters, I've had enough of that with Twinkling Watermelon

Why can't I have a hot guy making me such delicious breakfast 😭😭 also, Yul doing doggy aegyo went on for too long imo?? Idk about other people, but I just cringed. Felt like weird fan service or something…

Her butt is assymetrical??? How does that even work??? Do I even want to know??
Yet another cringe moment that felt so unnecessary. why did they make her character so off-putting… in the webtoon, she was kinda catty but still acted like a normal human lol. Also, Ms Han out here looking like a rich Disney movie villain
in between all of her cockblocking. her characterization in the drama is something else.

Lmao, I liked how she saved Seon-woo from the VP's dog… She shoved him to the hallway like she's a Strong Woman or something. I also liked that we were finally seeing Hae Na as a nice person, like in the webtoon. She didn't have to be so nice and considerate towards ML, but she's just a good person… or maybe she already likes him, idk lol

.
I also really liked the montage of Seon-woo falling for her was good, it was well done imho.

Mr. Lee is somehow meaner in this version, bc he keeps shoving dogs at Seon-Woo, fully knowing he’s terrified of dogs… esp since... Anyways, it's balanced out by him playing matchmaker. Feel like they made it too obvious too early that he's doing that, esp vis a vis the cake shop, but maybe that's how it was in the webtoon and I just don't remember. just keep an eye on him, folks.

They also handled how ominous Mr. Lee comes off as when it's mask off. the scary music, a spooky basement??

it appears he found out a solution to the global housing crisis -
just carve out a whole studio apartment on school premises?

Also, isn’t this the same school as in Twinkling Watermelon?? Like the school Chung-ah, Se-kyoung, and Eun-gyeol goes to??

S/o to Hae-na's eonni's shirt - "I don't sleep :)"
never have I related to a kdrama character's shirt more

Aww, look at Sean-woo being all brave and assertive so he can be around his crush 🥺 we in for some cuteness next week. It's funny how much Seon-Woo just straight up despises Ms. Cruella Deville in this version… also, all her cockblocking got her is her love rival & crush having a classic umbrella-related Kdrama Romantic Moment™️

My first comment, but I am a sucker for connecting K-dramas to each other with cameos giving us the feel that characters from different ones exist in the same world. Taxi Driver pulled this off with a cameo from the ML from One Dollar Lawyer interacting in a scene with the ML from Taxi Driver.

I just got a chance to watch this (what is free time again? *sobs*) but it made me feel so much better after a long day! I love how bright everything is - it made me laugh when Yoo-na gave Hae-na some dress options that included a black one. Ain’t no way she’s picking that with this color scheme!

Yul is such a sweet kid. It took him a minute to comprehend her transformation (understandable) but then he absolutely took it in stride and was totally ready to cover for her the next morning! I’m excited for her to have an ally who knows her secret at school. And Yul’s relationship with his uncle is also great. The secrets flying thick and fast as Hae-na left their house in the morning had me laughing so hard!

I’m happy so many people didn’t read any of the promos, so that Bo-gyeom’s secret is going to be a legit reveal! I’m also glad that whatever semblance of a love triangle we had with him and our leads at the beginning is fading fast (not that there aren’t others waiting in the wings) so that we can focus on what I’m really here for: Seo-won and Hae-na being adorable together.

I'm eager to see the Dark Spot that you mention.

The family curse similar with Shin Yu's but I hope it's not as dark as him. But then I remember they show us how Seo Won and Hae Na past in Joseon era .. since it related with dog, will we have a fun back story about the curse?

But then at that time, Haena looks like Seowon slave, to show the loyalty to her master she became a dog .. the story of manga Fruits Basket just pops up in my mind, it's sad ...

After this episode I believe it was a combo of two factors - him having a crush AND knowing she likes someone else. He distanced to save himself from a further heartbreak and that's totally understandable. But I guess the kiss and her following HIM around with all those flimsy excuses reignited his hopes anew, since he is surely NOT stepping aside for another guy's sake anymore)))

I am really enjoying this drama and I can not believe we have to wait two weeks for the next episode. Until then I will be replaying the explanation scene at 6.11 mins - 9 mins. I literally have tears running down my face just thinking about it. When he accidentally said he couldn’t communicate with a dog and then turned into a description for a drunk person that was comedy gold! All three of them played their parts perfectly.

I know the second female lead is going to really annoy me in future episodes but I am really looking forward to the rest of this series as they are doing a great job bringing these webtoon characters to life. After settling for some mediocre dramas to pass the empty week I am so glad that I have this and Twinkling Watermelon to start the week with a smile.

The whole dog in the school situation was a little bit too long. But now, they can talk.

I was surprised she didn't talk about her curse or that the nephew didn't have questions... If someone could help her, it's him, he knows her secret and lives with her target!

Chae-A's clothes look so inappropriate for a highschool teacher. She teaches male teenagers... In addition, she acts like a stalker. I don't understand why Seo-Won is not more honest with her, he's a genius and she doesn't hide she's interested in him, so tell her you're not!

It's funny but it was like CEW took the same role "the ML who looks cold at the beginning but who fell first for the FL" in 3 different stages : highschool in True Beauty, college in ID: Gangnam Beauty and now he's an adult :P (he just didn't take them in the order)

I think Seo-won is smart with lots of different things, but I would bet knowing how someone else feels about him is not high on the list hahaha! And honestly if someone came up to me and said the things she said behind the school, I think I would feel equally confused. What a weird strategy.

Perhaps he just doesn't know how to be strict enough without crossing into rude territory? They work together after all, she's not just some random admirer he can tell off and never see again afterwards. The awkwardness leads to some humorous moments, but I really dislike the idea that Mr. Lee is an evil, past life noble who is out to get our OTP. I said after the first week that the past life connection was unnecessary in the context of the premise and present day school dynamic. The situational set-ups have been good so far.

The slow empathetic attraction between Han and Jin has been well done, but the projected interference by teachers Yoon and Lee is not.

I think EYE should duck for cover when I say I thought Eunwoo did well both showing how Seowon fell for Haena, and how it has become more serious, and the stakes surrounding fear of dogs had some peak comedy moments (Haena shoving him out of the way, anyone?) while still being touching because I think everyone can relate to having an embarrassing secret that matters more to them than it should to anyone else.

OK, that was - somewhat unexpectedly - sweet? Like so many things could've gone horribly wrong after initial 2 episodes... but just didn't. Wow. Most importantly, FL successfully graduated from tactless stalker to not-so-secret anti-dog bodyguard and that was really cute. Good luck trying to cool the guy's feelings after all that lol))) Not that he still has any resistance to her charms left anyway, poor thing is a goner and apparently was like that for a while. My heart broke a little seeing him all adorably smitten from the get-go... only to be kicked where it hurts with realization that she crushes on his friend instead. Ouch.

Didn't expect him to re-enter the competition this early tho - did he mistake her post-kiss attention as a budding interest? That's some confidence in his lip locking skills over a short peck lmao. But I appreciate the fighting spirit! And he's actually pretty smooth and smart about it ("friendly" reminder to hyung about his piled up paperwork had me rolling). SFL who replaced FL in stalker department - with vengeance! - should take some lessons from him.

Very little progress to the curse-lifting kiss goal so far - I assume the story will go in "heat him up until he dgaf about dog fur as long as he can kiss her again" direction? Shouldn't take a lot of time with the current pace. And HN seems starting to sway as well - aside of her obviously being affected by his moves (boy's got some game, and not just with umbrella), what's with all those sudden compliments, huh?)))

SML being all sus for unknown reasons - with ominous BGM and creepy basement lair to boot - seriously breaks the sugary fluff mood. Stop that pls. I'd rather have him not doing anything at all than switching between cupid and whatever THAT was. Sis and vet guy keep being SO coupley, why they aren't an item yet, again?

P.S. Airing schedule is an abomination, get a grip, MBC!
P.P.S. Dear FL and show's stylists, you call that basic ass look "dressing up for a big formal event"? REALLY?!

No question: he looked like the groom! (Guys have it easy, one *could* argue, but girls have all the fun with dressing.) Yeah, but I’m also unsure about SK wedding apparel. Sometimes, people dress to the nines, sometimes it’s all very laid back and casual.. at least her style is kept consistent throughout the episodes 😬 after all, I loved the cream yellow colors to the bright yellow swoon umbrella! *chef’s kiss*

With 3-piece suit THIS tight fitting guys do NOT have it very easy, I'd say, one needs great body proportions to pull it off. Good thing the drama didn't need to worry about visuals with him as ML lol.

I think I've read somewhere once that in SK in depends on wedded couple's request? Like some demand their guests to follow a certain dress-code while others don't care much... But just like everywhere, trying TOO HARD is seen as an attempt to overshadow the OTP and thus frowned upon.

Yes, color is great on her, but otherwise... I did not get a proper look, but it seems like there were more interesting ones among options her sister offered her. Pity. She's lucky he finds her irresistibly cute regardless.

FL's first choice (the black and white dress) was so much better than what she was wearing in the end. It would have also matched with ML's suit...

Heavens, no! That dress looked way too much like infamous black-apron-over-white-dress/blouse soviet school uniform for girls. Google it, that was a horrible page in human fashion history...

Sorry, I meant "ugliest shade of brown EVER" aprons, rare black and blue ones were quite fashionable in comparison^^

"FL successfully graduated from tactless stalker to not-so-secret anti-dog bodyguard"
👏
Wonderfully expressed!!

Really what us with the single episode per week then skip ... just drop two episodes like last time.

As someone who read the webtoon before this, I can say that they're nailing the wackiness spot-on. Overall I'm not impressed by Eun-woo's acting, but I have a weakness for softer/nice male leads, so I'm enjoying this

This drama is doing all the right things for me! <3 <3 I'm in love. Loving the moments between our two leads. Them bantering at the bus stop was everything ^^

and the scene where Hae-na is watching Yu-na and Woo-taek eating cake, and Woo-taek suggesting the Matryoshka doll got me laughing! 😂😂😂

What a fluffy and cute drama. Though I am not that into the ML, is the first time I am seeing the actor in anything. And I am already annoyed with 2FL. Please go away.

I'm loving this show, it's so bright and happy. And I'm glad I read the webtoon after the first week, reading it was fun and I'm still really enjoying the drama knowing what's likely to happen.

Thank you for the recap! I promised myself I was not going to watch any new Kdramas weekly again. I should wait for all episodes to binge watch because I get addicted and the waiting is torture! But I love Park Gyu Young so against my better judgement I started. Now I am going to be twitching restlessly for days.

I came to share that the ML finding the FL with his nephew in his room was comedy gold. I was mortified for them but they explained it well.

And I love the romance that is blossoming and how the ML is getting more assertive in creating opportunities to spend time with her alone by blocking both his hyung to go shopping and that annoying teacher with the umbrella. He's still being cautious but I can tell once he throws that to the wind, she (and all of us) might be in some trouble.

I just need to find a way to endure till the next episode. Why did I do this to myself! Lol.

I plan to wait until all the episodes are available, as they're currently releasing them fortnightly, which is quite frustrating. I reckon I'll return in the new year and binge-watch the entire series.
