Live Your Own Life: Episode 5 (Drama Highlights)

Welcome to another week in Live Your Own Life, where I’m inspired to take my non-existent fitness journey very seriously. Maybe then I’ll finally achieve the K-drama dream of ending up in a love triangle with two chaebol heirs.

Gym shenanigans aside, Hyo-shim forgets about a dinner appointment with Tae-min, and his potential arranged marriage partner CHOI SOO-KYUNG (Im Joo-eun) is only too happy to take the dinner slot. Soo-kyung seems cool with Tae-min having feelings for someone else, but she’s also direct about her intentions to make him her man. Tae-ho, on the other hand, continues his search for his runaway granny. He comes this close to finding a clue, but gets stonewalled by a former nurse who attended to granny in captivity. Meanwhile, granny continues to recuperate at the Uicheon Villa — where Hyo-shim’s family lives — and her refusal to go to the hospital or to the police sparks curiosity among the tenants as to her identity.

Hyo-sung’s wife, YANG HEE-JOO (Im Ji-eun), continues to stake her claim to the villain throne. If she’s not nagging her husband about money, she’s forcing their son to play golf, and doting on their overly entitled daughter. You know she’s cold-cold when she financially cuts off even her parents. But Hee-joo is still many paces behind Sook-hyang in the villainous department. Sook-hyang’s latest act of villainy is beating up her daughter, Tae-hee, with designer purses, and attempting to marry her off to a 37-year-old man with a family history of baldness — for the sake of the company, of course. Jeez! Someone needs to stick this woman in anger management classes. And for the love of good hygiene, someone needs to stick Tae-hee into a hot bath, ASAP!

I have just finished the episode and here are my unsorted thoughts:

Granny is becoming my favourite character... and she is starting seeing Hyoshim as her future granddaughter-in-law. 🙂

Oldest Oppa's Wife on the other hand is becoming my least favourite character. Even Evil Aunt vying for the company is more entertaining.

Middle Oppa found his match in Aspiring Actress. I like her more and more.

Not sure whether the 2 Maknaes are a good match, they both seem to be irresponsible and bratty. How can they support and inspire each other?

And I still find Taemin dangerous.

Aspiring Actress is great! She has a lot of insights into human nature — maybe from her acting experience. Loved her verbal takedown of Second Oppa. I don’t think that’ll be enough to turn him into a human being, though. Well, he has 45 episodes to get there.

Taemin is dangerous if he is anything like his mother. He can potentially be a better villain that his parents combined.

Tae-min is all the more dangerous precisely because he is not purely bad and also because he does have his own independent agenda- which does not include marriage to Choi Soo-kyung, no matter how smart, beautiful, accomplished and well connected she is- or how much she wants him. We will see how that works out in the end.

I love Aspiring Actress. Middle Oppa does not know what a lucky man he is. And good for her for telling Middle Oppa what he needed to hear (which shows us that she is perfect for him- now he needs to learn how to be perfect for her).

The two Maknaes are definitely not a good match- right now. But with 45 episodes to go we may get a nice story in which they grow- and grow together- which is the best sort of love story. That is what I am hoping for.

Granny might just be everyone's favorite character. I am hoping you are right about her plans for Hyo-shim.

I was thinking about how perfect Aspiring Actress would be for Hyo-shim - she's going to have a family member who will stand up for her.

Indeed, she has already done so. Aspiring Actress is nothing if not feisty.

I have very little to say because I watch the show with FF.

- Hyo Shim deserves better and I hate that the family shows like one ray of humanity to lure her back into helping them.

- I like Tae-Ho and it is 90% because Ha Joon is playing him. His face when the owner of the gym said they should cancel his membership cracked me up. I also like his bickering relationship with the FL.

- The SML feels more like ML here. Probably because the SML has everything going on for him - SFL planning to get him, the evil mother and the director title. Tae Ho, meanwhile, just wants to find his grandma and exercise in peace.

@nerdy:
Haha and well said!
Taeho is such an entitled little sexist jerk right now and who knows for ?/50 eps but Ha Joon’s reactions are funny to me as well.
And, there is such a rich vein of justifiable hatred (as well as admiration) in KDs for chaebols and their conspicuous consumption. In this weekender, you have to laugh at the absurdity of hitting your adult daughter with designer handbags and then tossing them to the staff for wrapping up. I thought she decided to buy them because she might have damaged them in the process of being violent but then again, unlikely that she would have that much self-awareness.

She's buying them because they're really strong bags for hitting. I'm sure if it was a designer soft canvas bag, she would have been like "I'm not buying one. Too flimsy."

Yes Taemin is your typical chaebol ML rn but Hyo Shim is not interested in him romantically. In that area, Tae Ho wins since he has her attention, despite being a jerk. Technically, both are ML archetypes but Tae Ho wins because he is the chosen successor and is the FL's love interest.

Hyo Sung's wife continue to descend into the unlikeable characters. The topping of the week - the argument over the $1000 bill from his mom. The man earns something reasonable as top management in Tae-san but he only gets $300 when he's on his best behavior and $200 when he's not. I'm done with her character and we still have 45 to go.

I scoffed at Tae-min when he turned silently walked out of the gym the first time he saw Hyo-shim as Tae-ho's personal trainer. So imagine my joy even I saw him step into the game thus week. If anything, to put Tae-ho in his place. The reaction from Tae-ho as everything unfolded, especially when the gym owner asked Tae-min if he should take Hyo-shim off Tae-ho's service and back to his - that rude awakening... I liked it.

Last week, a beanie talked about Tae-min's egalitarian nature and I saw how it both endears him to me the more send also how it can easy become a pain. Sadly, we are already down that road. I don't know how Tae-min will react next week if it so happens that circumstances beyond her control made her miss their date not once but twice.

My advice to Hyo-shim : tell him to send a car. That way, he will be aware of any last minute roadblock which I'm already envisioning will rear its gear again.

Tae-hee and Hyo-do. No difference between the two. And, she should get a proper bath.

I felt a teeeensy bit of sympathy for her when she lists all of Hyo-shim's mother's complaints, but the $1000 thing was so dumb. She's has control over the finances and is just controlling in general. She should already know how much money is coming in and out. Her husband wasn't taking the $1000 from their bank account. It's more reasonable that her MIL got the money from somewhere else and gave it to him because his wife's a tyrant.

I'm enjoying this show very much, to the extent that I have spent spare hours doing research on Naver to try to understand what may be in the wings other than the obvious romance (and, for the record, I only began the show because of Ha Joon).

Since the happy ending for Hyo Shim and Tae Ho is fore-ordained, I'm more interested in the plot possibilities and twists of Tae Min/TV Lady and 2nd Oppa/actress. The spoiled baby couple is of little interest - especially after the brat slobbered all over the glass because of a designer bag.

The (deceased) grandfather's role has been cast (according to wiki) - presumably for flashbacks - and I think he will be an all-out, first rate SOB - he treated his eldest son horribly and, of course, flaunted his concubine to all. I think there may be a secret birth lurking in the wings - doesn't every weekender have one?

Meanwhile, filming began FOUR months ago according to ig page of one of the support actors - mostly outside/location, including at least one all-nighter at the Han river - so I hope we will continue to see some great camera work, such as that shot of the inmates at the Villa climbing three stories of stairs.

Granny may be the glue that brings it all together and I really like how the last scene was with her and Hyo-shim. Granny has sacrificed a lot in her life - looking forward to seeing their bond grow.

Hyo Shim need not shoulder all the issues of her family. They are all adults my goodness especially her younger brothers. Her mom needs to be nicer to Hyo Shim and just leave her alone. The brothers especially that nasty student Hyo Jun need ro work for his daily expenses if he does not like being supported by a "mere fitness trainer".

Hyo Seung's wife is just awful and Hyo Seung should divorce her asap for his own peace of mind. Take his son, Phillip, with him and let his wife take care of their spoiled daughter on her own since Rubi is the only one she cares about anyway.

I can't wait for TaeHo to find his grandma through Hyo Shim probably. It looks like Grandma Choi is already softening to the sweetheart Hyo Shim it seems.

Tae Hee outsmarting her mom and attendants was a relief. It would be awful if she gets put in a asylum. Now she only needs to pawn those jewels and wish her mom would get hold of her again.

Episode Five was really a continuation of the introduction, including fleshing out some of the main characters. Our middle brother’s girl next door attended a performance of MACBETH- and was brutally shamed by her ex, but we should note that the part we saw on the stage was Lady Macbeth pushing her plans… which was clearly intended to tell us that Evil Aunt was really modelled on Lady Macbeth, as someone whose ambitions for her flawed husband are limitless. Later we got to see that her husband has a serious flaw indeed- and we learn of the abused childhood that caused it.

Oddly enough learning of her husband’s past makes Evil Aunt not less evil but more human. I can see why the writer has chosen Lady MacBeth as her role model because Lady MacBeth is arguably one of the most complex female characters ever written by Shakespeare.

Street girl Tae-hee has run away from home to avoid an arranged marriage. Our 2FL just joined our 2ML for dinner and made it clear that she is very much in favor of their arranged marriage – she literally had her eye on him even before it was suggested. This last is both positive and negative news for our 2ML: On the one hand she genuinely wants him. On the other, she is not willing to take no for an answer. Was this marriage really suggested to her by her parents or is it possible that she is the one who actually put the idea in their heads? Subtly of course- this young lady is very sharp.

Tae-hee’s (and ML//2ML’s0 Grandmother has become the first character in Kdrama history to make a friend and ally out of The White Truck of Doom (others die- she gets a ride, others die- she gets a temporary place to stay and hide). If I was Evil Aunt I would be quaking in my boots.

I'm worried that when this sharp TV Lady realises who is the object of Taemin's affections, she will start some machinations and may make Hyoshim's life really hard.

I agree and expect this. She may not be purely evil but she is definitely possessive, and she believes that the agreement of the family means that Tae-min is already hers (and he better not forget it either).

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Agree - she seems to be standard k-drama character.

For the "arranged marriage" plot to begin so early in the drama, I can't help but believe that Tae Min will soon be forced to give in - either a long engagement or a "Marriage of convenience" since TV Lady doesn't appear to care for Tae Min as a true marriage partner.  Perhaps her threats against Hyo Shin will be the catalyst as once more Tae Min sacrifices and Tae Ho gets the benefit.

Required fields are marked *

It may be that Tae-min will end up in the arranged marriage, but I suspect that he will do his best to at least stall it off. This is a fifty-episode drama so that really needs to happen in order to achieve maximum drama. Our 2ML needs to feel free to pursue the FL and early marriage would cut that off.

From the limited exposure that we have to TV Lady it seems to me that she very much does appear to value Tae-min as a marriage partner- not from some one-sided crush but because he is simply the best of the best- and she wants the best. She is also wanting a real marriage beginning with her demand for absolute fidelity. It may be terribly calculating but at the same time it is almost terrifyingly realistic.

Nor is her calculation simply based upon external facts. She and Tae-min know each other. She knows a lot about his character first hand. This also means that she is well aware of the fact that he is not in love with her at all. That does not matter to her as she is not demanding or even interested in a love match. She is interested in a marital partnership based upon mutual benefit- and then becoming the ultimate Power Couple. It may not seem like a great foundation for a marriage but that may simply be our modern prejudices operating- there are surely worse things than going into a marriage not blindly but with eyes wide open.

I think it was meant to emphasize the fact that the two men are family- and set up to be rivals. Their muscular bodies demonstrate a shared value in being fit and strong- Tae-ho probably learned this from Tae-min's example.

Tying ties next to each other? Another demonstration of the family ties.

I'm loving the girls in this show. HyoShim was a sweetie as always in Ep 5 and has already made a place in granny's heart. So engrossed was she in her family troubles that she totally forgot the dinner with poor Taemin. TaeHee's confrontations with her mother are always so much fun! She is the only one who can get under her skin. And MiRim was such a queen throwing all of that second brother's bs back in his face. It will be fun when these three fiesty girls become friends.

Looks like the main romance is finally starting next week. About time too coz our leads have chemistry but hardly get 5 minutes of screentime together. The shower scene of the chaebol brothers showing off the result of their labours in the gym did somewhat make up for the lack of romance though!

Required fields are marked *

But I suspect that she will change him a lot more simply because he needs a lot of growth.

For all that Tae-min and Tae-ho are alike in many ways, the truth is that Tae-min is far more mature than his cousin. No wonder TV Lady wants him- that is actually a very sound judgment on her part. Which is why it will actually be entirely rational for her to pursue him with all she has got because he is head and shoulders above all other apparently suitable candidates. She cannot simply be seen as someone with an irrational crush- she has a totally rational one- and the backing of both her family and his. I really feel sorry for Tae-min.

TaeHo is a lost little boy behind all the posturing. That's why he needs his grandmother so much. And HyoShim too will do wonders for his self esteem once he recognizes her worth.

TaeMin is indeed more mature of the two. It's difficult to read him (except for his crush on HyoShim). When he sees TaeHo being trained by her, even when both are being nothing more than trainer and client, he goes back quietly and mulls over it. You get the feeling he thinks many steps ahead like a chess player. If he turns out to be evil, he will be much more dangerous than his mother.

The fact that our leads have limited screen time together is one of the more encouraging things about the way this show has started- we are getting to know all of the characters.

Looks like the one episode a week thing is here to stay. Arrrrrrggghhhhhh.
The demands from the mother (Seon Soon) if what Hee Joo said was true, were unreasonable. It sounded like she was just harassing her son. If true. Hee Joo taking the money his mother gave him and wanting to keep it was beyond evil. Knowing his wife though, wth was Hyo Seong thinking, leaving the money lying around?
I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Hyo Shim, seeing all the pressure people were putting on her. I would’ve snapped by now.
I was so glad to see Mi Rim(?) taking Hyo Jun down a few notches. Richly deserved.
I agree with every beanie commenting on Tae Hee’s appearance. She needs a bath pronto. Lol
Seeing Tae Min being stood up made me think if he’s the villain, they’re not doing a good job of making him look like one. I hope Hyo Shim has the opportunity to explain and apologize.
Hyo Shim beating up Hyo Do was the highlight of the episode for me. I rewound and watched it 3 times 😁 The sight of him cowering at the sight of her afterwards was hilarious.

I do not think that Tae-min is being set up as a villain, but rather as a proper second lead. He will probably walk on the dark side at times, but it will be in reaction to circumstances. He is one of the people who needs liberation in this show - and Hee-joo is another.

Do you think there will be redemption for Hee Joo? I fully agree as far as Tae Min. He seems more like the 2ML than villain. But Hee Joo has been so irredeemably evil so far it would be a hard sell for me

Required fields are marked *

I have previously noted that her husband and son need liberating - and really from Hee Joo.

"So why did I add Hee-joo?" is the question at the heart of you question. The answer is simple: Because she is so obviously, utterly miserable- and at least as trapped as anyone else in this drama. When I see Hee-joo I see someone living in hell- a hell of her own making, it is true, but really also imposed upon her by Korean social expectations for how to have your child succeed in life and the need to dedicate everything to that end. In her case she has so completely absorbed those ideas that she has become obsessed.

So how can she break these self-made chains? Particularly given the messages she is sent by her society? I honestly do not know. Maybe we will have an answer after the next 45 episodes- or not. It may be that there cannot be a redemption arc for her because it is simply impossible.
