You can only pick one: Non-human drama character

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one non-human drama character

mistyisles: It was harder than I thought to only pick one non-human character (versus a pair or group), but I’m going with Lee Yeon from Tale of the Nine Tailed — mostly because of his varying dynamics with the rest of the non-human cast. From the tricksy fox to the caring brother and everything in between, I’m so glad Tail of the Nine Tailed 1938 put him back on my screen. And one of the only complaints I have about it is that we didn’t get nearly enough scenes of him interacting with his past self and cringing at who he used to be.

solstices: Manhwa characters notwithstanding (I love Eun Dan-oh to bits), my choice would have to be Ok Eul-tae from Bulgasal: Immortal Souls. Not only does Lee Joon put up a heart-wrenchingly nuanced performance befitting the complex lore, but Eul-tae’s story — and his fraught relationship with Hwal — is so compelling. Much of his suffering was brought about by his own actions, yet how can you fully blame him when his torment was borne from abandonment, neglect, and loneliness? It’s for a similar reason that Rang from Tale of the Nine Tailed almost took this spot, but considering I still haven’t gotten around to watching 1938 yet (I know, it’s on the list!) I think it’s only fair for Eul-tae to be the victor. (At least he’s no longer second fiddle?)

Unit: I’m a very simple person. I see the prompt for a non-human drama character, and I instantly pick Do Min-joon the alien from You From Another Star. My pick, of course, has everything to do with the fact that the character is played by Kim Soo-hyun. Seriously, he could have spent the entire drama just breathing, and he’ll still be my favorite non-human character. Bias aside, I love a good cold-hearted-until-love-came-around hero — which describes Do Min-joon to a tee! And no, he wasn’t closed off by choice. Spending 400 years left behind on a planet that isn’t yours will do that to anyone. The year the stars finally aligned for him to return to his planet, the heroine barged in to upend his quiet existence. Cue: Do Min-joon going from being irritated with her, to grudgingly helping her out when she was in trouble, and then falling in love with her. For someone who decided not to use his superpowers to help others (because people took advantage of him in the past), Do Min-joon had no problem using those powers — to the point of recklessness — to help the woman he loves. Multiple times! That, my friends, is true love. But it wasn’t just about his powers. It was his comforting presence around the heroine at the lowest point in her life that made me love him even more. Plus on the lighter side, like many other non-human characters, Do Min-joon was super rich. He had one of the coolest apartments ever in dramaland, and his library was to die for! Do Min-joon, you will always be famous.

Dramaddictally: I’m going with a gumiho on this one because I find these mythical foxes so fascinating. And my favorite one of all is Kang Hanna’s ditsy and dating-experienced character, Yang Hye-sun, in My Roommate is a Gumiho. (Okay, I know, technically she’s a former gumiho who recently became human but she’s been alive for like 700 years, so we can look past that, right?) I tend to like Kang Hanna in general, but I’m not used to seeing her do comedy. It suits her! Here she’s the fun counterpoint to the uptight male lead gumiho — and for my money she steals the show. She might not be the smartest former-fox on the block, but she still knows how to needle her age-old frenemy and put him in his place (like, she beat him to the punch at becoming human after all). Plus, I loved her developing relationship with Kim Do-wan’s innocent and ready-to-cry character, which was really the reason I stayed live-watching this one. Sorry lead couple! I prefer my gumihos with a sense of humor and a side of adorkable.

Kkokdu!! Nah. Only joking.

I'm gonna have to go with a bit of a deep cut, because I decided to insist that I had to adore the character from the beginning to the end of the drama. Due to the nature of this drama, though, I'm going to need to be a little obtuse.

My choice is Kang Yeo-rin from Mystic Pop-up Bar. As half of the younger OTP in this drama--she kicks ass, literally and figuratively, throughout the show. I loved her from the moment she appeared...and all the way through the end. Gah! What a fight scene!

Alternate choice (with less spoiler potential) from that same drama: Yeomradaewang, leader (goddess!!! icon!!!) of the underworld (played to the hilt by Yum Hye-ran). She sure chewed up that scenery!!

You know, our dark deity boy in ill-fitting pants could've been actually very fun, if the show was a fantasy revenge thriller about him hunting and punishing baddies instead of what we've got.

Shin Min Ah's gumiho character "Gu Mi Ho" from "My girlfriend is a gumiho". She was so cute and a delight to watch. The story was coherent, the OTP romance sweet, and makes for good light watch even today (trust me because I only watched it recently for the first time)

2. Webtoon character, Kang Cheol (W).
3. Grim reaper, 444 (Black).

My favorite non-human character is Holo, who happens to be one of my favorite ML's in K-dramaland too. He is an hologram but he evolves to develop human feelings. He is nice, he is cool, he is gentle, he is caring, he is charming, he can sacrifice for others...

But there is a tie for the first place! Because I have to add Seon Woo-hyul, our charming vampire from Heartbeat 💔.

Honorable mention: Nam Shim (Are you human too?) and Monkey King (Hwayugi).

Although I briefly considered the turtle in Alchemy of Souls (far superior to the turtle in this year's My Lovely Liar) I think I have to go with the evil spirit that possessed Kim Tae-ri in Revenant. Complex back story for an evil spirit, and (mainly) because she possessed Kim Tae-ri!

Part of me wants to say Van from Island, just because of Kim Nam-gil, and there will always be a part of me that loves each of the Bulgasals for different reasons (Eul-tae is such a good pick, @solstices !) but it's probably actually Lee Rang from TOT9T and TOT9T38 for me. I love Yeon too, and all the other non-humans that they are introducing in 1938 (which I just started this week) are great, but there is something about Rang. When his character was introduced in the second season they did the little freeze-frame and it said "Likes: Lee Yeon. Dislikes: Lee Yeon." and I laughed so hard. So so true. I love the fraught brother relationship, the love for animals, the hatchet-throwing, and how he always ends up taking care of things and accidentally letting his inner softie show. Pretty jazzed about his budding romance storyline in 1938 so far!

So, I'm choosing Choi Jin Hyuk as zombie Kim Moo Young. A zombie refusing his zombitude, training until he regains his dexterity and trying to solve crimes.

Because the ones I would have chosen have all been taken I am going for two unusual ones that I know no one else would choose.

Two cats because they perfectly demonstrated the multiple personalities of cats:
The cat from The man’s voice webdrama.
The cat/man from Meow the secret boy.

The cat/man from Meow is an excellent choice. He was so endearing.

The first character that came to mind was Choi Kang Chi from Gu Family Book. He was so sincere. When he figured out how to make the flower sprout, he had this childlike quality I found really endearing. But the poor guy also went through alot of painful and lonely times.

After thinking on other shows, I remembered Heartbeat but I didn't even remember the character's name until I saw other people mention. I did like his character so I guess he would be my 2nd choice/honorable mention.

Not human anymore counts, right? In which case — Arang from “Arang and the Magistrate,” with honorable mention to the delightful trio of helpers from “Showtime.”

Also, if only the “Hotel Blue Moon” trailer at the end of “Hotel Del Luna” weren’t just a tease, the character played by Kim Soo Hyun might vault to the top of the list.

Mountain God Ryu Hong-joo : TOT9T 1938.
And the reason is obvious : her entry into the story. Immediately she got introduced I knew she was moving up the charts. Add in Kim So-yeon playing her character with such finesse, there's nothing to not like. She was the glue they held the trio mountain god friends together - Yeon, herself and Cheon-myung, and the reason why I was still trying to accept Cheon-myung's antics - she understood what he felt deeply.

Honorable Mentions...
Lee Rang : TOT9T 1938.
Han Ji-pyeong's hologram, voiced by Yeo Jin-gu : Start Up.
J(Amy)e : Love In Contract.

Son, O-gong from A Korean Odyssey. He didn't change very much--as the Monkey King he never had patience for humans, except for the female lead. I felt for him and got mad at Lee Yeon at times for being harsh at him. Our boy didn't shy away or pretend he wasn't hurt by his brother abandoning him. And I cried my heart out at the ending of season 1 and got annoyed that the future can't be changed. Still, he got his cute mermaid partner this time.

Shin-yu the Dog is presently my favourite, and any day is for him a good day to be a dog. Also, after ten years with him the most challenging part of the Spell of Fortune is fulfilled so that we can hope and expect for Hong-jo to perform that spell and get even richer and luckier.

I love titular girl (and boy, but that's a huge spoiler, so shhh!) in ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE, but it was YSH's Jade Emperor and his flowery goat that completely won me over there. Every scene with them (plus poor, eternally trolled King of Hell) was pure gold. Technically that would make two characters, but once you see the drama and understand WHAT that goat essentially was... yeah, still counts. And to this very day I envy Jade's hair stylist, best xianxia hair I've ever seen in a kdrama lol.

I can't pick one! Here is my list:
My favorite has to be the mermaid from "Legend of the blue sea"! She's beautiful, naive, smart, and a dork all in one.
I agree on the gumiho girl from "My roommate is a gumiho". She is adorable!
The vampire from "Arang and the magistrate" ONLY because it's Lee So Hyuk who is mostly bare chested and had a longish hairstyle. And the ghost girl, Shin Min Ah, who is the most adorable feisty ghost ever!
And the Cells from "Yumi's cells" because COME ON. hilarious! Especially the GIANT hunger cell! I can soooo relate LOL
From "Sweet Home" - I love Song Park as a monster with sharp black blade-wings. Also PROTEIN!man.
From "Tomorrow" - the main reaper trio is BOMB.

Could it be that there is a little mix-up? Lee So-hyuk was the vampire in "Scholar who walks the night". As far as I remember, there is not vampire in "Arang and the magistrate", only "regular" ghosts. Lee Joon Gi was the male lead in both dramas, maybe that is why...
