This week there was a surge of news reports on the state of South Korea economic culture trends. As popular culture stories tend to mirror what is happening, it seems singles are increasing, their incomes decreasing, couples who want to marry do not become official because of housing and other costs, and those who do marry don’t want children. The long summary follows:

Single householders are proliferating, but their income and assets are not even half the overall household average.According to Statistics Korea this week, one-person households increased by 336,000 last year to 7.5 million, which brought their proportion of total households from 33.4 percent in 2021 to 34.5 percent. The figure surpassed 30 percent for the first time in 2019.
But life for singles is not without challenges. Their average annual income last year was W30.1 million, far lower than the average income of all households of W67.62 million, and 61.3 percent of them earned less than W30 million (US$1=W1,314).

Their assets also fell short of half the average for all households. As of March, the average assets of single householders were worth W209.49 million, compared to W527.27 million for all households, while their debts increased by 1.9 percent to W36.51 million. A majority or 54.6 percent live in small spaces of less than 40 sq.m. But more than half of them take a positive view of Korean society and their human relationships, polls suggest. A Statistics Korea official said, "As young people are increasingly reluctant to marry, the number of single households is expected to keep rising."

According to the Seoul City Government and Seoul Institute’s study, 34.7 percent of young adults residing in Seoul stated that they are struggling with depression. Among them, 44.3 percent were unemployed after graduating, while 42 percent had been laid off. The poverty rate for older adults may also feel knock-on effects from youth poverty.“If unemployment and high numbers of NEET youth persist, it will become harder for the youth population to become independent from their parents and they will continue to receive financial support from them,” an official said. “In turn, it will become even more difficult for these parents to save money for retirement."

Marriage is on the decline, but the statistics also seem to be skewed by thousands of young couples who have not registered their marriage yet because they see no immediate advantage.According to Statistics Korea, 213,513 couples tied the knot in 2020, down 10.7 percent and the fewest since the government began tallying the figures in 1981. It was also the sharpest decline seen since the Asian financial crisis in 1997.

But many young couples also defer registering their marriage to maximize their chances of finding a home amid a lack of housing supply. Real estate prices have soared since President Moon Jae-in stepped into office in 2017, making homes even less affordable for young Koreans.

The government does offer affordable housing to young couples, but there is a long waiting list, and double-income couples usually earn more than the eligibility cutoff point. Also, the chances of getting into a newly built apartment actually increase when both husband and wife apply separately instead of as a couple.

One 34-year-old newlywed who lives in Seoul still has not registered his marriage three years after tying the knot. He bought a home before getting married, and so did his wife, which means they would be penalized with higher taxes as multiple-home owners if they registered as a couple. "Taxes rose for people owning more than one home, and newlywed couples are exempt from transfer taxes for only five years if they sell one of their homes," he said. "I intend to sell one once I see how much further the prices rise."

Another 29-year-old newlywed said, "The government offers special housing benefits to newlyweds up to seven years after they get married, so I intend to register the marriage once I save up more money to move to a bigger home."

The number of newly married couples fell more than 6 percent to about 1 million in 2022, and the proportion of couples having no children reached an all-time high.

2022 newly first-time married couples 1.03 million down from 1.1 million in 2021.

Of these couples, 46.4 percent did not have children, a record high. Babies born to newlyweds came to 0.65 in 2022, an all-time low (14.5% lower than national birth rate of 0.76)

Korea has been struggling with a low birthrate and population aging, as many young people opt to postpone or give up on getting married or having babies in line with changing social norms and lifestyles, as well as in the face of high home prices, a tough job market and an economic slowdown.

The newlyweds earned a yearly average income of 67.8 million won ($51,482) last year, up 6.1 percent onyear, as more couples had dual incomes. Some 57.2 percent of the newlyweds had dual incomes in 2022, up from 54.9 percent a year earlier. The dualincome households earned 84.33 million won, compared to 49.94 million won tallied for singleincome couples. Some 89.9 percent of the newly married couples had loans, and the median amount spiked 73 percent onyear to 164.17 million won in 2022.

A surprising reason why couples do not have children: competition.

Young South Korean couples without children cited “intense competition among students” and financial issues as why they decide to go childless, in a meeting with government officials held this week. The Ministry of Health and Welfare hosted six young couples who do not plan to have children in a bid to acquire ideas for policies that will help tackle the issue of the faltering birth rate in South Korea.

Several of the participants raised concerns over the hyper-competitive nature of the college entrance admissions, which starts from the very young age. "(Parents) constantly compare kids from their first birthday parties, even over which child started walking. I don't think I can engage in such endless competition," one of the participants said. Those who took part in discussion stressed that everything becomes subject to comparison among parents. One mentioned that a couple he knew got an expensive car way out of their budget so their children would not lose face in front of their friends.

"There are some people who call students with perfect attendance 'perfect poverty,' implying that they did not miss a single day of school because their family had no money to go on a trip," said another participant. "There must be something done about the culture of comparison among kids."

Some people said that they simply lack the time or finances to be good parents. "We each have our own job, and we barely have time to sleep at home and mostly eat out. I don't think I'll be able to take good care of the child, and I'm afraid he or she will resent me," one participant said.

Also “education inflation” is another worry. Young people seek the security of high paying corporate office jobs. But as probationary employees, most do not make it as hiring is biased toward high grades at prestigious schools. This causes parents to overspend on education, tutors and private academies for their children. It is like spending on the lottery.

I admit that I don't know enough about South Korea, but of the population of 52 million, 9.5 million live in Seoul, that is almost 20%.

Dramas regularly show that only living in Seoul promises success, the countryside is underdeveloped, offering little prosperity. If economic success is centred on one city, the pressures on this city are enormous regarding housing, transport, schooling, welfare etc. It is not surprising that people are unhappy living in such a place. It is similar to the UK with London. Decentralised countries like Germany do much better in this regard.

it is so weird that such intelligent people can be so insecure that they have to buy expensive things to show off. I think I wouldnt survive in Korea bc I dont have enough tact to not spell out the obvious. that concentrating on the outer layer and designer items is the opposite of intelligence, thus doesnt matter to me which college degree you flaunt. Not holding your own against social norms? why were you even born? we are born to challenge the system and live life on our own terms!
yeah, that gets you financially and economically punished but there are ways to be independent.

or they can come to Estonia where they can set up their own company in 10 minutes online. we only have TWO korean restaurants btw - in the entire country. the line to order is 3 months. there is immense interest towards Korean culture in Northern Europe. they could earn a fortune custom making hanboks and other korean style garments in Finland.
My teacher loves it here because its small and you can travel the entire country during every summer. plus she dreams of a country house.

7

I don't understand why people are surprised by these depressing statistics given that:
having children is expensive
housing is almost too expensive for everybody
divorce is complicated and messy
men think they have every right to be abusive (some women too)
have you seen the news? how many people are murdered byt their spouse or SO? scary!

- Be a society that increasingly makes life hell for most people, especially women.
- Make life even worse for women who have children.
- Give women other options (even if they're crappy ones) via education and the ability to work outside the home.
- Have widely available birth control.
- see points 1 and 2 again.

No mystery here at all.

Is this marriage/birth rate problem of more concern only in East Asian developed countries like Japan, South Korea etc., or is this something that is affecting other developed nations in West too?

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's complicated. Many (not all) Western developed nations have far less homogeneous populations and have longer histories of and/or more open policies toward immigration that partially offset falling births. Their birth rate/population trends are affected by immigration, differing birth rates among different sectors of the population, etc. Birth rate and population decrease are overwhelming concerns in Italy, for example, where births are well below replacement rate and immigration has not been a major contributor to population growth, but not in France where both birth rates and historic immigration have been much higher - partially due to government policies, partially to its colonial history and relations, among many other factors. Those are just two examples. Some Scandinavian countries have more ethnically homogeneous populations (like Korea) but also have government policies and programs that favor women's rights and provide extensive family support, and those have contributed to stabilized or increased births.

I used Neogen wine peeling pads for the longest time and loved it. Now that my skin has aged I have moved on to AHA/BHA peel pads from Dennis Gross

+1 for laneige lip mask

I love the cosrx snail mucin and have been using it for more than 5 years now. It works!

I also use the Cosrx Nourishing rice overnight spa mask in colder months. It helps keep my skin from getting dry.

Also use the Beauty of Joseon glow serum. Not sure how effective it is since I use a lot of other products too for hyper pigmentation. But I like how it feels on my skin.

The following are currently my Holy Grails in K-Beauty skincare:

1. SOME BY MI's triple retinol eye cream - it got rid of my panda eyes within 1 application and eye bags within 2 applications.

2. COSRX's Snail Mucin 96 Essence - My laugh lines all nearly disappeared after a couple of applications.

3. Beauty of Joseon's Ginseng Essence - My skin LOVES it and drinks it in. Bonus that it has Niacinamide in it which helps with anti-aging, collagen production etc.

4. SKIN1004's Centella Ampoule - 100% pure Centella and I use it as my main serum.

I am also currently using the following in my skincare routine:
- COSRX's Propolis Toner
- COSRX's BHA Blackhead Power Liquid as my chemical exfoliator
- COSRX's Advanced Snail 92 All in one Cream as my night time moisturing cream
- COSRX's Balancium Comfort Ceramide Cream Mist
- Goodal's Green Tangerine Vita C serum
- 3W Clinic Intensive Sunblock Cream Pa+++ Spf 50
- Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel
- A variety of different Korean masks (I'm testing out which ones suit me best).

@reply1988 Once I started looking into skincare routines, I decided to just go all in after the COSRX Snail mucin essence did its magic.

It's paying off big time and K-Beauty skincare is just as effective (and sometimes even MORE effective) than pricey prestige brands like SKII, Estee Lauder, Lancome etc.

You'll need to get used to spending time in the morning and before bedtime tending to your skin though.

1

@reply1988 Yep - the results are rolling along just fine. I figured that after another 6 months I may well end up consistently having "glass skin".

2

So I got the Korean Sunscreens early this year and I am loving it. I am using prescription Tretinoin on my skin now as that is the only way I can get it in my part of the world.

I really want to do something for the glass skin, even if it's 10% of what I see on screen in K dramas, it is worth it. But I am also vegan. Is there a substitute for CORSX snail mucin? I see it recommended everywhere but I am sad I can't use it. So I am looking for closest substitutes. Any recommendation appreciated.

@Dramaforever Try the Cosrx Galactomyces 95 Tone Balancing Essence which has rice as a key ingredient so it's vegan. I have a bottle of it sitting in my fridge that I haven't tried yet but will soon.

Bonus - it's a really affordable dupe for SKII's Pitera line given that it's like 1/10th of the price of SKII's stuff. Pitera is SKII's fancy marketing term for Galactomyces.

Goofty tv debates and fights and exact popcorn time you want - nothing of substance, nothing of value but always ready to point fingers and audience aka voter gets distracted and fooled again and again - this is why i like politic - voter is the one who brings all the -ve upon itself with their own decision n foolish action of voting.

Far- right this n that - so much hullabro but nothing material. 2024 will surely be important point as 2 big democracies goes into election and european union also has elections - too much money involved here - too much money here that can be made.

AMAZON - cancelled lots of orders - and with that reach 320+ orders this december - from 2020 april to 2023 december.
am a shopaholic now - purchased mostly food and food related stuff as well as electronics - Amazon fresh offline stores remind you of wallmart but i liked them better.

Amazon warehouses that destroy more than 125k $ worth of products per warehouse in western countries keep prices high in lower-to-mid economies.

One thing you even see in dramas - delivery guy or boy comes - pur product in front of door - takes a pic and scan and done and there are 1000s of video you can find on internet when someone came and took customer's product away - not a nice ay of delivery - this isn't proper service.

here things happen a bit different - delivery people can't just throw the package product at your house and go away -

I always get the product and schedule the stuff by date and day properly - know delivery staff and have specifically given instructions - and also done the same with all online e-com business and publishers -

In human society networking and knowing other matters - you can be anti-social who knows almost everyone important and good thing is that almost always these people need you so a basic material friendship is build upon time - so you are spending much money - providing suggestions and feedback - at times even help out - so in return you get some help too. Easy give and take hich involves hahahee and sincerity too.

That's how things go if you behave well - now back to amazon - let's see how things go in next 2 weeks - have many orders.

9TAILEDVIXEN'S NEWSLETTER OF FRIDAY MUSINGS:

1. Work continues to be brutal this December. The holiday season always comes with a spike in domestic violence cases and this year is no different.

Aside from that, it's all the usual year-end wrap-up stuff that's doing my head in (I'm looking at you, the Neverending Annual Report Because The Organisation Really Outdid Itself This Year)... plus prep for the coming year. Oh joy...

2. I'm sorting out my holiday season reading list - usually some fluffy historical romances and contemporary rom-coms set around Christmas time.

3. The year-end online sales have been AWESOME for picking up various beauty products (or beauty-related products):

- Imagine my surprise when I restocked a batch of specialist shampoos and conditioners for my bleached and coloured locks and the seller sent me a a free foldable travel hairdryer from a famous brand.

ME: *Jaw drops*

- I stumbled across a SOME BY MI coupon that got me a couple more tubes of my Holy Grail eye cream for 75% off! WOOO!

4. I haven't made art for a while due to work so Imma dusting off my half-written Work-In-Progress fantasy novel to try to finish writing it by mid-2024.

Am also seriously considering writing poetry again (I used to be surprisingly adept). Might branch out into writing lyrics.

We'll see - but the important this is that putting hands-on art creation back into my life will be good for my soul that's in danger of becoming cynical.

5. Have been getting myself into gear to reboot my fitness levels in the new year to get my body back in fighting shape. This is part of my ongoing self-care programme.

A friend of a friend is trying to get me to sign up and pay up for some expensive AF diet program. She oversold it to me and I did my own research and have decided that nobody should trust a diet programme that claims to enable you to lose copious amounts of weight in 90 days and requires you to buy a whole lot of supplements.

6. Still stocking up on supplies for next weekend's baking and marmalade-making marathon.

My friends are very much looking forward to the boozy Christmas marmalade I make - apparently it's good for 1) basting meats and 2) getting mothers into an accidental happy hour mood during breakfast when they unknowingly slather it on their toast hahahahahhahahahahaha!

7. My fall down the Hallyu Rabbit Hole (TM) continues and I've been taking quite a few friends with me. It's amazing how talking about K-Dramas or K-Beauty stuff I use or K-Pop piques people's interest enough for them to start getting curious... then asking for recommendations... then me watching them go: "OOOOOH!"

I shouldn't laugh though - my BTS-loving friends are watching my exploration of their discography, videos etc with much delight *cough cough*. In retaliation, I got them hooked on K-Drama OST ballads hahahahahahahahahaha!

I lost 8 kgs in 2020 during COVID by Intermittent fasting. I gained 2 of those back last year and STRUGGLED to lose those again until this past month, when I went back to more vigorous IF. I am doing 18-6 now. I finish my last meal around 12.30 P.M and then have my next meal / coffee at 6.30 a.m. I just can't avoid eating in the mornings, so this schedule works for me, but most people I know finish their last meal around 6 p.m the previous day and then have their first meal at 12 the next day. It really works as long as you're careful during your eating window. Caloric deficit is the key at the end of the day. And consistent caloric deficit. Especially in the first few days when your body is still figuring out what's happening. Once it goes on fat burning mode, things get really much easier. Fasting gets easier too, so it's actually the first few days that is the key I feel.

What worked for me this time after struggling is getting an accountability partner. My friend and I started this round of IF together and we decided to report to each other after every successful hour of fasting. Just the thought of a successful text kept us from snacking and after a few days we didn't even have to text, we had gotten used to not snacking. I work from home, so I was in an extremely toxic habit of boredom eating. Highly recommend doing it with an accountability partner in the first few days. It works.

Weight gain is hard to deal with at any time of year.

I have just invested in a top of the range under desk treadmill as part of my back recovery plan and now a day of meetings is no longer a pain (literally) Instead I get my 10k steps in walking so slowly I am practically walking backwards (aka no sweating). I paid the money because this treadmill is really quiet so no one is disturbed by it even if I am not on mute. When I announce my step count my colleagues get jealous!

So thinking about some ways to get movement into your day may help. My Smart watch helps with the motivation and reminders to move and complete my goals.

Good luck on your mission hope you can report back with some progress news soon.

In the meantime, all I can do at the moment is eat sensibly and only indulge for one holiday meal and then go back to eating sensibly.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Christmas Mode has been activated!🧑‍🎄In my case it wears off quickly, so I always try to postpone the activation until right before the Holidays. Alas, still ten days to go and the jingles on the radio got to me this morning!🔔😅It should be fine if I can distract myself from Christmas songs. Fortunately, there is plenty to occupy myself with today. I have been on standby all morning to receive all my parcels with non-Christmas stuff and passed those hours with some digital paperwork and writing for the Dramabeans end of the year review. Next week is the final countdown with some time fixed endings, so today is my deadline for the things with more time flexibility. As a reward I am going Christmas shopping with my friend next Monday, although we probably will be in the bookstore all day!🤭

Our Health Ministry calls for masks again as the Covid-19 cases nearly double to 13,000 in a week. The ministry anticipates an increase in Covid-19 cases as individuals travel to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, coupled with the potential for the spread of the virus during our upcoming school holidays starting from December 16. The ministry is also appealing to the public to prioritise safety by wearing masks when venturing outside.

While I never take off my mask at work or around the public (except when I ran in several running events recently) ever since the pandemic started and had 3 vaccinations, it is still scary because there are 3 vaccinated people confirmed with Covid 19 in my office. I tested myself this morning and thank god it's negative.

I wish everyone to stay safe especially during the festive season. I'm planning the spend the rest of my annual leaves at home watching the rain and maybe waiting for the flood (the rainy season has just started here and it always get worst with heavy rain and floods)

Recently I had a two week get away (in order to use my annual leaves before the end of the year) backpacker solo travelling around the north and west parts of the Peninsula ~ joined some fun runs event, climbed the wettest hill in the country (yes, in the rain) and ended the trip with Coldplay's concert .. which is the reason why I'd been away from dramabeans for so long.

Now I still have a few more unused annual leaves which I can't carry to the next year but the end of the year is too soon and I still have too much work after the 2 weeks break .. I really hope I can watch the rain and not completing some work if I ever got the chance to use the leaves.

This week, Netflix released a viewership report for the first half of the year. (The spreadsheet is available here, if you scroll through the text down near the video clip: https://about.netflix.com/en/news/what-we-watched-a-netflix-engagement-report )
For the kdrama enthusiast, there are a couple of interesting highlights. Keep in mind this is just from Jan 2023-June 2023. Also, its hard to tell if the precise numerical ratings are exact, since they rounded off the number of hours of engagement. Still, The revenge drama Glory was the third most watched program across all of Netflix, beneath the Night Agent (My detailed review: AWFUL!) and Ginny and Georgia, (a soap opera-y U.S. show which I just checked out but couldn't take more than 5 minutes of)

#15 was the game show combat series designed to display beautiful athletic Korean bodies, Physical: 100, which I admit I watched some of for underlying, deeply moving theme of human struggle in a hostile world. It also had contestants saying the line, several times "He's (She's) no joke" which I've started saying myself about various things, including various sundries-- "that shaving cream is no joke."

At number 16 is Crash Course in Romance. at 23 is XO Kitty, an extended metaphor about the impact of the Hallyu on disaffected American teens, at number 17 is Doctor Cha. Alchemy of Souls 1 (40th ranked); and had more hours viewed than Alchemy of Souls 2 (46th) not surprising, because it had more hours. But surprisingly Mr. Queen had beaten out Alchemy of Souls 44, in a battle of soul shifters ; The good bad mother 48, Bloodhounds 50 and then 3 older shows, Extraordinary Attorney woo, Business Proposal, and that evergreen Crash Landing on You, which I think was viewed briefly and intensely, by Netflix viewers spending a week in Switzerland.

There's more of interest. I would have liked to see where King the Land and a couple of other shows fared had they extended the time period, but speaking of Kings, I'm happy to say that King, Eternal Monarch which Netflix keeps recommending to me (should I give in?) is still on the list, at 425, where it will be forever, presumably.

If Lee Min-ho on a white horse appeals to you, go for the Eternal Monarch.

Why in kdramas, I'm not sure how accurate this is to real life, do people keep investing ALL their money into stocks? They can be struggling and/or working multiple part time jobs yet they invest everything into stocks.

Is the stock market different in SK? I don't know about stocks but in the U.S., it seems to be more of a moneied people type thing (except with the recent GameStop thing).

depends on what stocks and the price. like how many you need to earn something vs how many do you get for a certain sum. I am planning to buy some shares but for not a very large sum. I failed the finance course anyway

The SK stock market is similar to US but it basically has mostly local companies, like Samsung. More than 10 percent of Koreans own Samsung shares. And a growing number of teens (350,000 plus) own Samsung shares. How? There is no age limit in stock trading, but those who are under 20 years old should open their stock accounts based on the consent of parents or legal guardians.

Just like in other countries, people have the idea that investing in stocks is an easy way to make money. They get lured in during news of stocks increasing in good times but more often than not get burned when the bubble bursts. There is at least one TV channel and several YT accounts dedicated just to stock investing and day trading. In some respects, it is the most "legal" form of gambling in South Korea.

How do the shows you've seen pop up in "my shows"? I have tried just finding the final on DB and giving it stars, but it takes forever and it seems arbitrary whether it makes the show, uhm, show on my page or not.
And for the shows that are there ... I should have some beans somewhere that I should be able to see that I had, right? But I only have the ones in my tag, from my Beanie Prize for writing in the discussions of old dramas.
I saw I should "just caoun't which dramas airing in 2023 I had seen ... but that doesn't magically make beans appear on my screen. How do I do? 😭🤯😩

Last year about this time, I was having a bit of a panic because the results of the annual Dragon Poll (it's now called the Dragon Poll) were neck and neck across all categories and I had no clear winners for anything.

Well, this year is going to give us a bit of healthy competition but it's also shaping up to be a bit more clearcut.

All the strong showings for Best Drama have their fans, so if you have an opinion head on over to the blog and vote in the 2023 Dragon Poll (this is now called The Dragon Poll)

My mother watched her 1st (and only) kdrama and it was Weak Hero Class 1. I guess she was intrigued by what I said about it such as how they managed to develop and break a bond so effectively in like 4/5 episodes. Couldn't talk to her about it cause she had no thoughts or feelings on it.

I think because of the S2 casting as well as Park Ji Hoon's new drama, my interest in the drama was reignited. Plus I just learned the webtoon officially ended. I also learned that the drama was a "sleeper hit" that gained recognition over sns. I was a little surprised by that but then it didn't seem *as* surprising when I learned more about the lead actor. He seemed to have a niche of small dramas projects that don't necessarily appeal to the masses. I think some of his dramas are categorized as "idol dramas". Weak Hero Class 1 was also a short drama with only 8 episodes with a run time of under an hour.

I can totally see why Ji Hoon said this role was a turning point in his acting career. It's almost crazy how well suited he was for the part considering his cute idol image.

I wonder what the cast chemistry will be like in S2.

Guys why did I not realize Matchmakers was so good sooner? I've gained like 4 beans in the last 3 days lol... binged Moon in the Day and then Matchmakers and also went back to feel like I'd really watched One Day Off and also caught up on Good day to be a dog... it's been a good week for dramas and beans.

Once upon a time, I was talking about steamy kisses/make outs in Kdrama which led to wondering if married/dating actors can have those types of kisses. As far as I know, the folks who tend to be on the lists of best kissers seem to be single or at least not married.

The person I was talking about this with said in Kill Me, Heal Me, the kisses are pretty tame but the looks the guy gives are smoldering which led to wondering "do married folks have to show the steaminess in other ways aside from the actual kissing".

Recently, I saw an interview with Ji Chang Wook & he was asked what was the worst option to him: his significant other having a kissing scene & him seeing it or him having the kissing scene and the SO seeing. I can't remember his answer but I remember him saying thinking about/imagining the scenario was starting to annoy him. He also mentioned he felt a little of that with The Worst of Evil because his character's wife kissed the bad guy (I did not know that haha).

Anywho, I don't watch that many dramas where romance is a focus and I don't know enough about korean actors & their personal lives to know if there's any truth to this.
