Beanie level: Water maid

Ok, they absolutely knocked it out of the park in the last 15 minutes of episode 5 of Queen of Tears!

Singles Inferno 3 – What a mess! Where did they even find this guy Gwan Hee?! More importantly, why am I sitting and watching 10 hours of this narcissistic guy playing mind games with girls?

I literally skip him and just watch the hosts’ comments. He always says the same two things anyway, it’s funnier to just watch the reactions.

Whatever he said in the last 2 episodes went right above my head. It almost felt like he was a robot repeating the same thing over and over again just changing the sentence structure.

I’m really enjoying the hosts comments this time – they’re far more real than usual, maybe it’s because Gwanhee is so bad even they can’t stop themselves

The hosts at the beginning of every episode: today I’m gonna try to be kind to Gwan Hee. 😌

Those same hosts everytime GH opens his mouth (aka. every two seconds): I’m so done. He’s exhausting. Why do this girls like him again???? I missed the memo. I’m not even surprised he said that. 😒

When another participant does something they don’t like: Omo, that’s SO Gwan Hee. She’s female Gwan Hee. He’s acting like Gwan Hee now. 😬🙃

        😂😂😂🤣 I love them.

Da Hee calling him a ‘manipulative coward’ was by far the best moment of this season for me. I can’t imagine how irritated she must have been to let that slip out, considering they are very polished in their comments always and want to avoid controversy.

Tabong, dramaforever – agreed and agreed! 😊

I still think the panel aren’t pushing it far enough. I mean, he’s pretty much a narcissist at this point. But then again, women’s issues / rights are a controversial topic in South Korea. So yeah, strongly agreed that “manipulative coward” was a surprisingly great thing to hear.

I wonder if Gwanhee feels ashamed watching this played back.

I agree too, but it’s scary to think of the repercussions. People can be brutal and no human deserves to be cancelled over a reality TV show which is heavily scripted.

I am hearing that people are hounding Min Ji with hate comments on her IG, that she closed off the comments. It is sad that people take it out on the girls, because the girls on the show don’t see his behavior towards other girls. They’re watching these other interactions along with us and it must be a surprise for them too.

If anything, I am blaming the producers and editors of the show. We really didn’t need to see so much of Gwan Hee. It is just not interesting. Just how wholesome was that interaction between Min Woo and Si Eun, would have loved more such interactions between different people.

Also, I don’t think GH will be feeling anything but proud at this point. He must be thinking he stole the show like he predicted at the beginning of the show. If he had that much insight about himself, he wouldn’t be the Gwan Hee we see 😉

Haha great point about Gwanhee feeling proud. Also ugh – really true that people are taking it out on the girls. He really did lead Minji on and gave her no hint whatsoever that he’s also interested in Hyeseon. How was she to know? I feel bad for her. She said she wants to be an anchor right? Hopefully this doesn’t derail her public image and anchor career prospects.

I think I was watching ep7 or 8 when I decided to stop watching because they kept giving him airtime and all he could said were those repeating words and logic which didn’t sound logical at all. He is a narcissist and I wonder why interesting girl (to me like Hye-son) couldn’t see this trait in him. I was bored so I noped out.

@mmmmm as drama fever said, the girls don’t know what he’s saying to the other girl. Also, I can see how he could be charming – he’s an athlete, he’s quite funny, and he’s tall. Haha. These are such superficial traits but combine them with his flirting and you can see why!

I started When I Fly Towards you last week and now, I am in the second last episode. I love, love it. It is like a warm hug. Makes me feel all nostalgic. It is only my second Chinese drama. The first one was Hidden Love. I liked that one too but found the heroine’s voice too irritating after a point (I LOVE the OST of that drama though). This one is more about friendship and that period in their lives more than romance, but I still love it so much. There are very few books or dramas / movies that make me tear up because of the beauty of it, this one does.

Oh there’s a correction – I found Hidden love’s heroine’s way of speaking irritating, not her voice. I wish she had changed it once she went started at university, instead she continued to speak in a childish voice.

This is something I learnt about on the site and it’s to do with dubbing. A lot of the actors have regional accents or speak another language so to get round it they are dubbed by voice actors and for some reason the one woman with the childish voice is everywhere. I stopped watching Chinese dramas for a while as it was proper annoying but now more people are doing their own dubbing and there is a wider range of voice actors so we get a true reflection of the variety of female voices.

Oh really? That’s interesting. I was really close to dropping Hidden Love because of the childish way of speaking, but it had rave reviews and I persisted. It is a beautiful drama overall, the romance was very cute and I really didn’t have a problem with age gap too. Someone told me that she changes her way of speaking after she grows up, I kept waiting for it happen until it was ep 20 and I finally gave up 😉 The heroine in this drama speaks a little childishly too, but definitely way better than HL.

Another good 2023 Chinese drama, “Love Me, Love My Voice,” had to do with voice acting/dubbing. The male lead and a lot of the side characters are voice actors/dubbers and work for a famous voice acting/dubbing company that they co-own. So a little behind the scenes look at the voice acting/dubbing industry. The drama is based on the novel “Really Really Miss You” by Mo Bao Fei Bao.

Thanks for sharing I will look that one up as long as it’s not one of the extra long ones which I only watch when there is tumbleweed rolling in K drama land.

Love Me, Love My Voice is 33 episodes at 45 minutes per episode so equivalent to a 24 episode k-drama.

What a great tid-bit! I honestly thought the Hidden actress was speaking the way she did to keep the young/naive image..

Welcome to the world of C-dramas! 😁
If you ever want recs, I’m sure there are a ton of us who will be glad to give you some, myself included.
I can’t speak on “Hidden Love”, as I don’t liked the FL actress (Rosy Zhao Lu Si), so I never go near her stuff— I’ve only ever watched 1 of her dramas and that was more than enough— but I agree with what others have already said. Lots of times, the regional accents of the cast does have an impact on one’s watch of a Cdrama, especially if the drama isn’t dubbed (wherein a universal accent is used by the voice actor/actress cast) or when the cast dubs the drama themselves. I’m okay with it when it’s for modern dramas, but even as a native speaker myself (I’m Chinese Canadian who can understand and speak Mandarin [the dialect in Cdramas] and Cantonese), hearing the difference in accents for costume dramas will take me by surprised, especially when it comes from actors/actresses with a stronger accent or when they have a very specific/niche way of pronouncing certain words just because of where they’re from (e.g. The Beijing accent or the Northeastern accent)

For me, When I Fly Toward You was far better than Hidden Love.

In the first, their relationship was really well balanced. He’s better than her at school but still needs her for English. He’s introverted but he still shows his love.

In Hidden Love, I didn’t like that she never fell in love with someone else, since she was a kid, it was him…

I agree, WIFTY is better for me too. I love their relationship. At the beginning, I was surprised that she was so straightforward, but he needed someone like her. Also, he always showed that he cared in very small ways and she was always perceptive enough to understand that too. Talk about soul mates! You could always tell that he found her irresistibly cute, which added to the balance you mentioned too. She always ‘talked’ about his cuteness, he always ‘showed’ in his eyes how cute she was.

I loved When I Fly Towards You and really enjoyed Hidden Love. I also enjoyed both of the novels that they were based on. Unfortunately, When I Fly Towards You is only half translated so I had to read using google translated. There are tons of really great Chinese dramas.

I think you made a good start. Hope you find many more dramas you enjoy in 2024.

The Matchmakers journey wouldn’t have been half as fun as it was without the Beanies. It is also the first drama that I actively participated here. Thank you for the fun ride.

My first fan wall post, hope I\’m doing this right.
I\’m over here sitting in shock after ep 15 of The Matchmakers. I take back what I said, I so wish 15 and 16 aired one after another. I need to know!

Ep 15 was pure fun. Skip the preview if you can and just watch ep 16 directly. I am cautiously optimistic about it.

Great idea! I’m going to skip the preview! Tbh though, I really do think this is going to have happy endings all around. The general tone of the series just doesn’t lend itself to an unhappy one. (She says with eye twitching, still experiencing ptsd from Heartbeat…)

        1

Yes, that’s what I am holding on to. The tone doesn’t seem to indicate sad ending. The drama has been extremely consistent all 15 episodes, so hopefully no surprises

Thank you for the warm welcome. I am embarrassed to admit that I first discovered Drama beans in 2012, when I watched my first K drama, Secret Garden and got so obsessed that I googled about it aggressively until I arrived at this page. However, it took me 11 years to actually open an account and start participating actively.

I participate in live discussions on reddit, but I am starting to find the average audience there much younger. So while they offer great perspectives, sometimes I just want to see things from older audience’s perspective.

Agree about live watching. The worst was live watching CLOY, I just cannot explain the torture I underwent waiting for new episodes. And we had 2 breaks where we had to wait 2 weeks for the next set of episodes. In spite of all that, I prefer live watching over binge watching, there is just something sweet about looking forward to a particular day in a week because of a drama that is airing.

Wow! So, welcome…but also not? You’ve been around for quite some time! We do have quite the contingent of folks who, **ahem**, have been around the block a few times. 😉

Are you going to stick around and chat about the next drama? If so, what’s that “next drama” going to be for you?

        1

Thank you. I’ve been active here for 2 months now I think and I really really really love reading all your comments and insights. I feel every single person here is highly intelligent. So, I am definitely planning to stick around. However, I am not very consistent in my drama watching. I watched only 1 drama from summer 2022 to summer 2023. Have watched at least 10 in the second half of 2023 I think. So I’ll definitely come and check out drama beans comments when I am watching a drama.

I am now watching My Demon (love it), Park’s marriage contract (Ok OK, but will definitely finish), Samdal Ri (I don’t know why I am watching it, but I am up to date with the episodes)

I’m afraid that live-watching on DB can be a little bit addicting, once you’ve started!! That said, plenty of people just dip in and out when their mood strikes. You’ll find your happy place, I’m confident.

It’s been great getting to know your takes on MM. I look forward to our future interactions!
