This week Netflix released the film documentary which contained the Sulli interview just prior to her death in 2019. She admitted that being a k-pop idol was horrible and her life as a celebrity was a struggle. The pull-quotes on being a star/celebrity are gripping:

"I always felt trapped somewhere in the word 'pretty' since I was young. Whenever people called me 'pretty', I always wondered why they said that to me, what they were thinking when they said it."
She reminisced, "I felt like I always had to act pretty, and in reality, if I wasn't demure or didn't appear pretty, I would get into trouble. I think that's when my rebellious spirit started."

When asked about what she wanted to do when she was twenty, Sulli mentioned, "There were two things: The first was to receive psychiatric counseling. The second was dating." She added, "It was my first decision on my own. I don't regret it and I was happy. I didn't listen much to what my mother said and did what I wanted."
"People don't really think of celebrities as humans. When I started as a celebrity, the most common thing I heard was 'You are a product, and you have to exist as the best and highest quality product for people. Even if people didn't say I was a product, everyone treated me like one. I had to move according to their tastes, and I was afraid of my product value falling. I didn't know how to assert myself, whether I could share my thoughts, and speaking up about my struggles wouldn't change anything."

Sulli then shared, "There was no one around me who would say 'Choose for yourself', 'Decide for yourself', 'What do you think?', 'How have you been?' It was just about doing things without thought. It felt like I was going to die from the struggle. I just kept blaming myself. The only time I could control was when I inflicted pain on myself," she confessed.

When the interviewer asked if she ever thought it wasn't her fault, Sulli replied, "I couldn't think that way. When I first spoke up and said 'I'm struggling', it felt like everything collapsed," and she tearfully expressed her sorrow.

Comments: The entertainment industry demanding the perfect human image and reputation in such an inhumane way is appalling; she was not the first nor the last to go through this. She could never have a moment of being normal, like dating, because that would tarnish the “product” and image. She could not get any support to cope with the trolls, the hate comments, the anti-fans, the stress and anxiety to be pretty and perfect. K-pop is not a career but a game of survival.

Thank you for sharing the excepts and your comments. It really makes one scared for all the youngsters in K-pop and the experiences they have to go through.

This isn't remotely surprising but to actually have the verification from someone who has actually experienced all that before they died is something.

One of weirdest and saddest things to me is that stuff doesn't seem to have changed all that much. Maybe I'm wrong cause I have seen some agencies (or at least one doesn't have the dating bans) but still, the moment entertainers do things people don't agree with or mess up, they are treated like the scum of the universe. Not a person with even the slightest bit of understanding or compassion until hindsight kicks in years later (for some).

Makes me think of Jong hyun of SHINee. He tried to get help and they put a bandaid on his feelings and he never really got the help he needed before it was too late and we lost a truly great person with many talents. And he is just one of the ones lost.

What she faced wasn’t something unknown in the entertainment industry. It is already happening ages before her time. It is tragic and cruel but the only answer for celebrity if they want to pursue their career and survive through it is to totally think it through whether they want this kind of life or not and then beef up their mentality. Because people attention, whether it is wanted or unwanted is what feed them, in material and spiritual sense.

The problem with kpop, they started very young. Kids don’t have the ability to analyze what they being involved into nor know what they’ll facing in the future. Their only hope is to surrounded and guided by good adults that seeing them as human, not only as source of money, or in other words, like Sulli said, as a product.

One of the funniest bits in this weeks episodes of Perfect Marriage Revenge were the Shaman consultation scenes.

The actress who played the Shaman swung for the fences and was completely overacting!!

I'm not sure if it was intentional or not but it was hilarious

Trolling through the archives of Dramabeans (a recent fun habit), I came across this 2019 article by @missvictrix, "Don't Call my K-drama a Soap!"

What would all the PMR fans (myself included!!) think of calling that drama a "soap?" I think that our reactions might end up bringing some of @isagc's reservations about the show being somehow less "Korean" and more "global" to the fore, perhaps.

For myself, I'll admit to thinking of weekenders as soaps (@oldawyer be gentle with me!), but PMR is more like the American TV show Soap from the late 70s [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap_(TV_series)] which was, itself, a parody of soap operas.

I think PMR could be called, as a parallel title, Makjang! (a deliciously hilarious (partial) send-up of Korean melodramas).

What do other Beanies think?

No offense to anyone who disagree, I can’t help but to present my case. Yes, it is a soap opera. Look at the trailer, evil step mother, sibling affair, cheating husband, rich and handsome CEO as main lead, woke up from death, time travel to the past to take revenge, all those things in 45 seconds clip. It couldn’t be any soaper than this. And the term makjang for me is equivalent of soap opera.

Because we already in the topic, I’ll say something.

I tend to avoid makjang the most because I know most of it is food only tasty but have no nutrition whatsoever. In lack of better words, it’s a delicious junks. Buuut, I read some of beanies reviews and most of you write positive things and said it’s there just to be enjoyed. You guys make it sounds like it’s harmless and only fun, or maybe I just not give your reviews an enough reading. I tempted and needed some light watch so I gave it a try, and voila! It’s delicious junks. This is not healthy for mind nor good for my single soul, but I watched the entire 6 episodes available marathon. Sung Hoon is so hot in here I couldn’t believe he is 40 years old. His character is so unreal because he is every woman imagination of man and the FL looks good beside him. The stories? It is what the trailer say it is I couldn’t believe I’m still watching. I blame beanies for pulling me in but realized I should have known better.

I would say it's a makjang but I have always thought that soap operas are very long series, as the ones which are broadcast here in Spain, from Mondays to Fridays, some of them have been on air more than fifteen years (as Amar en tiempos revueltos). They are simple and cheap, low quality in everything, but they have a huge power of hooking people to watch them (I don't watch them now, but when I was in my teens I was hooked to that kind of soap operas).

Soap operas are more similar to Korean weekenders, I guess. More slice-of-life, good hearted people and less over the top characters and villains.

Required fields are marked *

I think I connect soaps with being very long, and also having things continuously happening that draws out any possible conclusion. So I agree that weekenders - of the 50-episode-kind - fit the bill better than a 16-episodes K-drama.
When I watched Soap, I did not know the genre it parodied. Denmark didn't have that kind of shows, and it was only later you could see "Dallas" and then "Dynasty" on Danish TV (And the title "Dynasty" was "translated" to "Dollars", not being so much recognized as it's own thing as more like "more of the same American Spew").
Then again, English is not my first language, and maybe therefore I tend to call long, commercial, pop-culture TV-shows, frequently of questionable quality, respectively soaps, K-drama weekenders, and telenovelas depending on style and origin.

I dont agree with the classification of Soap either.

A defining feature of a soap operas is that they are continous and never end, at least till the broadcaster cancels them.

Makjang dramas are more akin to Telenovelas or Turkish Dizis

All four formats share very similar tropes, from Birth secrets, extramarital affairs, cartoonish villains, over the top acting, etc

......but they are not the same, like novelas, makjang dramas have a begining and a definite end, they are usually written and directed by one or two people and can sometimes be adapted from another storytelling medium.

Soap opera do not share those commonalities at all.

I completely agree as soap (soap operas) have many seasons with each season normally having more than 50 episodes and can extend a few years until viewers lost interest. Take Dallas, House On The Prairie and Big Valley as examples of a soap opera.

This from Google where it began in the 1930's "A soap opera, daily soap or soap for short, is typically a long-running radio or television serial, frequently characterized by melodrama, ensemble casts, and sentimentality. The term "soap opera" originated from radio dramas originally being sponsored by soap manufacturers."

A one-off drama like PMR can never be similar to the above.

Festival season or is it on - fmcg not doing good as much as i know. Yearly friday event sales and december sales will provide better view.

I'm now going for 1 jan 2024 - for change - this needs fighting.

handling cold season isn't easy so need to get ready to - this time it is becoming one big challenge.

Let's see how cold season goes.

2023 - I did only 2 things - milk 1 or 2 odd litres a day - water 500ml to 1litre a day - cookies sometimes or not. that's it. I like fruits but 2023 there can't be fruits - so whole diet was almost liquid and days in between nothing - that's why 1st of August i faced the consequences of my foolishness.

2024 - all this has to go and change -

Vegan - demands no dairy products - then i'm done for - so need to shift to fruits n vegetables back.

Meat - i said long before - i want to try sea food - now when it gonna be - who knows - if ever it gonna be - who knows - all if left to future.

I Won't go into ethics n moral and blah blah how meat n meat eaters r this n that - this self claim authority looks good on their character - and if someone's life is their pleasure then that's that - everyone has their own freedom - Things is such creatures are the ones most loud, most appallingly hypocrite and delusional - that's why named them facemasks.

I'm for carbon percentage and both meat and dairy products do that a lot - but some can't do without their taste buds so what can be done and the same cry all the time for this n that.

Crude and natural gas both struggling - so in 2021 i was talking about short selling - 2023 we get a Short selling drama - news is korea gonna ban short selling in 2024 - the basic short selling is of options - more a theta decay earning and knowledgeable people earn throw delta too. I'm into it. the other short selling is of stock itself whic actually help ascertain which company has good balance sheet or not - their fundamentals sensible or not - helps investors escape frauds - so govt intervention almost always is to help politicians n their crony friends.

Now AS I always say cold season - action season - protest season - so good for defense stocks
another one is - yes - Pharma sector - cold - medicine - hospitals - medical services - so yeah cold season u aim for such companies and funny is i recommended few to others

and they milked good profits and when i saw the rise n profits i felt hapy for being accurate but i got nothing material - it's frustrating - ur views r right n u get nothing - zero increase in bank balance.

In 2021 said i never did forex - gonna try in 2024 - change

Stock market - gonna be active - why should others have all the fun . If i'm doing good work i should get someone benefits too.

In addition to the many, many weekend-airing dramas I have to watch (26 hours until Castaway Diva!) I am going to be watching the filmed musical stage adaptation of The Prince of Egypt, which was just released on BroadwayHD. I've been waiting for this one for a while, since it was announced a long time ago so I am quite excited!

I'm obsessed with Castaway Diva. I'm counting down the hours.

A part of me is just waiting for the confrontation between abusive dad and Bo Geol (& Woo Hak) because I'm genuinely so confused about what his plan is. The boys are grown men. He can't force them to live with him (unless he's planning on knocking them out and holding them hostage) They don't *have* to be on his family registry (I don't think; I'm not sure how it works. In America emancipation is a thing but in SK, holy hell if you don't have a family history)

I think he wants them, especially Ki Ho, to be broken and reliant on him.

He said if [Ki Ho] is a bad son or he's guilty, he needs to catch him. If Ki Ho is guilty of something, does abusive dad want to handle the situation, making Ki Ho indebted to him or does he want to turn him in which would in turn ruin Ki Ho's life or at least make it much harder so again abusive dad would be "needed"?

No matter what, Ki Ho wouldn't go to his father though haha so now we're in delusional territory. (Well actually we entered it when he said he was going to gift the tie to Ki Ho)

I just read 2 news about two new pairings in kdrama that I never know I needed. 1. Lee Joon Hyuk and Han Ji Min, 2. Choi Woo Shik and Park Bo Young (even better in new show written by the writer of my beloved summer). 2024 seems very promising.

I also just watch movie Twenty. It’s a little bit a culture shock in the beginning because the jokes just so raunchy I couldn’t believe when I read the sub. I was like, did they really said that? In that situation?. But after 15 minutes I get used to it and enjoying it as it is. It’s funny I cracked a laugh a lot of times. Surprisingly, though the script was vulgar there was no scene that is erotic. I’m reminded about time when people used to be able to crack a joke like that without getting cancelled. Good times it were when people were stronger and not so easily getting hurt and offended by words. Anyway, don’t try to find moral lesson from this movie, don’t take any lesson actually. If that happen in real life this boys especially KWB’ character probably would be in jail.

It's Friday evening here and my brain is mush. So here are this week's ramblings:

1. I accidentally got a friend of a friend hit by the Namgoong Min Accident Truck (TM). Didn't mean for it to happen - was chatting with my friend about MY DEAREST and grousing that I can't get it where I am yet and she said: "I'm gonna watch it with my friend and as a precaution, I am sending her Namgoong Min's Instagram account to have a look to brace herself."

But did my friend's friend have a look before she sat down with my friend to watch MY DEAREST?

Reader, she did not.

Accordingly to my friend, she exclaimed "OMG!" at the beach kiss and well... another one for the Namgoong Min Accidental Ward.

2. Languages - I have been learning French on Duolingo in an attempt to make it my fourth language. It has been going okay BUT...

... hilariously, because I'm catching up with so many K-Dramas, I'm picking up Korean informally and much faster than French (it's also easier to pronounce than French)*

*Which I guess can be credited to me having Chinese as one of my languages. I'm having fun picking out words that mean the same thing and sound almost the same as certain words in Cantonese or Hokkien.

3. Work has been like Hydra-like - so many deadlines, so many fires to put out, so many (human) cats to herd.

4. I'm going to watch THE MARVELS with friends tomorrow and are excited at the prospect of watching and supporting female superheroes and Park Seo-Joon (even if he has what amounts to a cameo).

5. I love baking but why am I stuck on repeat with making Banana Bread? I could bake sourdough bread, I could make brownies, I could do some pies but no - have been doing variation after variation of Banana Bread - Banana Cranberry Bread, Banana Walnut Bread, Banana Raisin and Walnut Bread, Banana Coconut Bread, Banana Carrot Bread, Banana and Chocolate Chip Bread...

My friends and family members don't seem to get tired of Banana Bread though...

The Namgoong Min Accident Ward definitely needs to keep building extensions LOL!

Banana bread is relatively foolproof to make if you have the right recipe. I just endlessly tweak it. Baking is my hobby but normally I just eat a small piece of whatever I baked to check for taste and texture and everyone else gets the rest. My friends definitely have a "free bakery service" going courtesy of me but in exchange they need to agree to eat not just the successes but also the failures LOL!

I find your bits about picking up some Korean words incidentally very interesting. If I may ask, do you normally watch Kdramas with Chinese/Cantonese/English/ French or Korean subtitles?

2

reply

Required fields are marked *

@mmmmm I usually watch with English subtitles because English is my first language (a postcolonial reality) and I read fastest in that language.

Cantonese is a language in itself (spoke Cantonese has 7 tones instead of the 4 tones used by Mandarin) but on most streamers, what's offered is standard Mandarin translations but I don't usually use that subtitle language as I can't read Mandarin as quickly as English.

I'll tell you a hilarious thing which made me want to wish the pox on Netflix - I was happily watching WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS and got to episode 20 when I discovered that NETFLIX DID NOT INCLUDE ENGLISH SUBTITLES FOR THAT EPISODE.

Required fields are marked *

@mmmmm It's interesting because I'm seeing overlaps between Korean, Japanese, and Chinese cultures.

Japanese written language still has some Chinese characters and many Koreans still have Hanja (Chinese) versions of their names.

So I'm in the odd position of being able to read some parts of Japanese sentences (though pronouncing them in Mandarin instead of Japanese) and I can say the names of many a K-Drama star in Mandarin if they have a Hanja version of their name.

I love to bake as well—muffins, scones, biscotti, cookies, brownies, layer cakes, etc.—but, like you, I seem to be stuck repeating the same recipe: “Kitchen-sink” cookies, which are like chocolate-chip cookies on steroids. Family and friends always ask when I’ll be making them, and how many I’ll let them take home.

I think a beanie language club would be brilliant.

A beanie (sorry, I can’t remember who it was) once mentioned how great it would be to have a K drama based on beanies. I think the language club could represent the found family element, like the book club in When the weather is fine. There is a K-drama with a bunch of foreign students at a uni in Korea. I only watched one episode as it was really low budget, I think Beanies: the drama, would be a better sell🤣

Oh, you mean So Not Worth It.

LOL a kdrama about beanies should be a comedy or slice of life.
But I vote for a comedy where beanies are so sick of bad dramas (or bad endings) that they decide to writer their own drama. And everything that they write actually happens to them. Or even better, the kdrama their correctly watching becomes real but beanies try to "fix" the story and at the end beanies get super involved in the show and become the main characters of the drama.

Yeap, I'm reading too many reincarnation webtoons these days. LMAO

I really wish I hadn't watched the movie. Then Seo In Guk could have reigned King of all my favorite SK actors. Now he's tumbled down into the abyss of forgettable. And no, just because he was convincing as a killer doesn't mean he was a great actor as killer. There is a whole line of other disgusting characters that could have filled that role just as easily.

the matter with SM Ent selling Shinee movie to Russia... it really bothered me. But today on live we got a hint that the members didnt agree to it. but they cannot stop it. just the problem is, because of the sanctions in EU anyone doing business with Russia will get restricted.
I mean if they are not all hypocrites.
why it is bad: tickets are taxed and taxes go straight to the war machine.

I will wait and see. I was so upset that I regretted everything. I felt deceived. But it seems like not everything is quite so.
I hope they can leave SM. bad company...

there is a piano playing upstairs.
my relatives have already sent me 6 calendars. never turned a single leaf on those things. I have one on my wall stuck in 2014. I could have a freak display of calendars all showing different time.
no time for dramas bc im taking part in this project repairing jeans and I got 12 pairs to fix... artistically... but cannot do fast bc fingers hurt. its tough material

anyway looking forward to Seo In Guk and really wishing for a Park Bogum cameo but the guy is stuck in commercials. they kidnapped him...

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

The problem of lurking full time on Dramabeans is that you feel present, even though you aren’t entirely. Case in point: My last Open Thread was at the end of September.🫢

Veteran Beanies might remember my weekly (un)employment misfortune posts in the past on the Open Thread, a sort of coping diary if you will. About a decade later things seem to finally be looking up. I handed in a request at work to get another job in another department with the necessary work adjustments. If all goes well, I can start over sometime in the first half of 2024. Gone are the endless rejections and job firings, now it is the employer who must figure things out on my behalf while I rest some more in sick leave and get everything ready. It took me two and a half years to take this step, so I am very proud of myself!💪

My free time is no longer limitless, so I hope the getting ready part also includes Dramabeans, K-dramas and other entertainment!🙏

Hello Beanies! It's been a while!

I have been trying to get into a twice a day skin care routine with all the steps- cleansing, toning, serum, eye cream, moisturizing, sunscreen to achieve clear skin... I hear it takes a good few months time to show results.. hoping I stick to it for a long time.

I am watching Vincenzo and aside from it being super fun, I noticed how clear Song Joong-ki's skin is!! Better than any other actor on the show! My skin could never!! I looked up his skincare routine and apparently he does regular masks and routines with the products he endorses. He washes his face with milk and eats apples daily!! He has also written a skin care guide book for men.

Anyway I keep pausing my drama to read up on some or the other skin product or skin care activity.

I'm just ramped up on my skincare as well. Previously it was just cleanse and moisturise and slathering on sunscreen and sticking a hat on when I go outside.

Now it's cleanser, exfoliator, toner, snail mucin, serum, eye cream, and moisturise (with SPF50+ moisturiser); face masks twice a week; and slathering on sunscreen and sticking a hat on when I go outside.

The basic twice-a-day routine doesn't take long (maybe 5 minutes or so?). It's only the mask that takes 20 minutes at a time.

And I've been switching over to K-Beauty skincare. Reasonable prices and much better results (for my East Asian skin at least).

All that and no smoking, no drinking, cutting down on fried foods etc and staying well-hydrated with lots of water helps a ton with skin health. (I fail when it comes to getting enough sleep though...).

Sorry about the rambling - my Inner Beauty Goddess gets activated upon talk of skincare haha!

Oooh thank you for sharing, and for the tips! Yes good diet, hydration and sleep really need to go along with the routine.

I will check out some exfoliators, skin mucin and some Korean products sometime.

For snail mucin, go with COSRX. They are the ones that carry the 96% snail mucin essence.

And it freakin' works!

Omona, I just made the conversion and that's crazy. As a "hot weather" hater, I feel your pain.

Where I used to live it would be hot even during this time of the year. It would rain but the rain would only make the weather hotter. It was horrible. In this city at least you'll feel refreshed when it rains. I prefer the weather here.

Hi, beanies de mi corazón. 💚 I hope you had a nice week!

Beanies, how has it been your relationship with kdramaland this year? After reading this year's round up list I noticed not that many shows came to my mind. I'm not even sure I've watched 20 shows this year.

I left behind my fear of dropping shows this year, so I have many dramas I dropped even without finishing the first episode.

Thanks to Ryeoun I had a lot of fun with two shows (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse, Twinkling Watermelon), he's probably my favorite actor this year for giving me something fun to watch.

And I know I'm betraying my real favorite actor, Kang Ki Young, because I didn't even try to watch The Uncanny Counter 2.

I also betrayed my favorite actress, Moon Chae Won, because I haven't finished Payback. I was enjoying that show more than most people, but I lost the timing to watch the finale and now it's on hold. 🥺 Same with My Perfect Stranger. 😔 I really hope I finish them soon.

I think this year I enjoyed more the shows with actors that aren't that famous or that weren't on my radar. I feel like the shows that no one was looking forward to became my faves.
I find funny that even tho I'm a hardcore romcom fan, my favorite shows this year were about parent-child relationships, kidnapping, superpowers, the trolley dilemma and a flower boys guesthouse. LMAO

The beginning of the year was kinda meh, but I'm having fun rn. Maybe I'll get more beans that I expected this year.

Anyway, enjoy your weekend beanies! Viva la vida 🍉!

This is a topic I've probably mentioned before (but honestly it's just always relevant). I just saw a video about the an actress who was blacklisted from the korean acting world because she had an affair with a director and he subsequently left his family to start over with her. She lost her career and even mentioning her can cause backlash; he still makes indie movies & teaches about filmmaking and the only projects she can work in (from what I understand) is his films. It's been 8 or 9 years since the relationship was announced.

This once again made me think of (a) what is the line of professional & personal life? (b) this is why it sucks to know about people's private business (c) oh the sexism/misogyny at play that she's the homewrecker at fault who deserved to lose everything while the guy who left and cheated (and had a history of cheated) can still go on working. (d) can people ever come back from such scandals? Like when the majority of the country seems to hate you?

Its unfortunate for how things went down for her. It looks like the industry is not as forgiving. I agree both are at fault but she lappears to have lost more career-wise. But if you think about it, they are both adults. They must know the repercussions of their actions and should've anticipated this backlash.

The industry and the public can be merciless. It's crazy!

Example: Yoo Ah In. Yeah he did what he did but the way he was treated afterwards was abhorrant. I wonder if anything even happened to the guy who threw coffee at him.
Then you have the folks who are just victims of lies, speculations, or rumors and even when debunked it STILL follows them around forever. There was some idol guy accused of cheating. He didn't but people still demand he be dropped from his group. Some actor lost his budding career due to cheating accusations.

And I don't understand how him cheating on his girlfriends = he doesn't deserve to work.

I am not familiar with idol news but i would understand it better if the cheating idol would be on hiatus instead of leaving the group completely.

I wouldn’t prefer to work with people who cheat on their partner either. It reflects what kind of person he or she is, and I think that might affect their professional abilities as well as their relationships with coworkers. In YAI case, it’s different. He needs help, not punishment. People there are too judgmental I wonder if they have anytime left to look at their own life and try to make theirs better while understanding that people may and can make mistakes sometimes. If that doesn’t hurt other people, it’s the help they might need, not the punishment. It’s just lazy writing off a man in his prime time. Cancelling culture is so convenient in this regard.

Why do you think it would affect how it affects their work/professional ability as well as their relationship with coworkers?

0

If he can cheat on someone who loves him and whom he is supposed to be loyal to, what about others? The world doesn’t have only him for us to work with. If he changes his mind, do it properly like a real person. Cheating is dishonesty on the person’s part.

1

Should your coworkers inform you when they cheat, so you can take appropriate action in your workplace?

3

@elinor I don’t know what is in my comment that makes you think I’d want to know my coworkers’ personal life, I thought I responded to the idea of knowing someone (in this case, a public figure such as a director) cheating on his wife with a coworker. In that case, I’ll feel sorry for the wife. If you happen to change your mind, be a man and tell her first and take responsibility. Divorcing and paying the alimony (or whatever) to compensate her feelings before seeing another women. Will I continue to work with him? Ofc if I don’t have a choice. But if I were a director who had power to choose whom I could work with (ie to select the cast) and I knew this for sure, I might want to work with others who I think it’s a better choice. It isn’t the master of the craft I myself prefer to work with, but I would person who doesn’t cheat or do something that hurts others.

Please be noted that this has nothing to do with the cancelling culture that judges people based on rumors or something people did in their personal life that doesn’t affect anybody (did drig but didn’t sell), but I have problems liking the same actor if he was proved to be involved in let’s say the Burning Sun incidence. I think I understand the what the cencelling culture is coming from (high moral standard), but I don’t agree with it because they take it too the extreme (cancel first, fact check later, too harsh of a punishment inappropriate for the crime), so it becomes toxic instead.

I think it might affect the relationships in the workplace because if he could cheat with a coworker, he could do it again. I think the same thing happened with a popular YT a channel before where the other 3 cofounders decided to let go of another fcofounder who cheated on his wife with one of the crew. All of them were friends, his ex wife included. They even issued an apology to viewers in one of their videos.

1

Actually, I’m their video, they issued an apology to the other crew member for spoiling the team. They actually ensured viewers that nothing of the sort should happen again. They valued the crew members, and would hate to think that they should become stressed because of unprofessional reasons.

1

Far from me to support the act of cheating of a spouse ( women do it, also), but that cannot be an indicator solely of someones professional conduct. There are diferrent emotions at hand, and the personal ones cannot be controlled as the profesional ones. And because we don't know exactly what went on in a marriage/relationship prior to cheating. We think we know and we can certainly relate it to our own lives but we really don't. So if we don't know, we shouldn't judge and cancel out someones livelihood over personal issues that are private.

5

Like or hate it but Kpop isn't selling music, it's selling a romantic fantasy. sasaeng culture is all about inserting yourself into a romance with your idol, whether as wish-fulfilment (I can feel important because I support somebody who is living a life I admire) or as a literal romantic fantasy (maybe they will date me some day). If they're cheaters then nobody wants to do either of those things so they can't sell their albums.

This is why indie artists can get away with things that idols can't. Because they're actually selling music. Kpop idols aren't.

In this case, if I remember correctly, it has been said that the director's wife had took care of his disabled mom for long time and that he used fund reserved for their children's education for personal use and did not pay for their living expense for a long time, and when the wife approached the actress, the actress told the wife that she should controll her husband better or something like that. In the addition, as the wife refuses to divorce, the story will never end. Hence the public is less inclined to forgiving them. Their careers are both nearly finished in Korea, which is a pity, as I think she is good and charismatic actress. Many of her fans did not understand her choice as she used to date handsome famous actors and she said in an interview that when she is interested in a man, she would make some signal so that the man could pursue her and she is always successful in get the man she wants. Now he directs movies in which she stars and the movies often go to some movie festivals. But at least they stlll get to make movies.

Korean "scandal" redemption or forgiveness is a hit-and-miss hypocrisy. On average I think the exile period is 1 to 2 years depending on the facts and circumstances. Seo Ye Ji bully and gaslighting scandal (which affected a drama production) has caused her to sit out for the past two years. Her agency was just hit with an spokesman advertising breach of morals clause judgment of 1/2 the appearance fee because of her scandals. Lee Dong Gun was put in the doghouse for almost 2 years because of his divorce to Jo Yoon-Hee. Because of her marriage, she lost her KBS radio show and any acting role for more than 2 years because she was expected to stay home and take care of their child. Celebrities caught DUI with property damage are getting longer bans because of their reckless behavior. Recent idols who have been convicted of sex crimes have been banned for life.

Comebacks are usually timed when the public has forgotten about the scandal or some bigger controversy is in the news. But usually, the returning person can get a cold public reception. However, there is a new trend by "bold" celebrities who do not wait for public acceptance but "self-absolve" themselves of their misdeeds. For example, singer Eru, who was convicted of drunk driving last year, attempted a comeback just 10 months after halting activities. Although he withdrew from a drama he was set to appear in, his period of reflection was brief and the public did not seem to like it.

So there was backlash for her working and there was backlash for her divorcing? Wow, people really can't win.

With Son Ye Ji, I thought she worked on something recently and it was fairly successful after she pulled out of a previous project. I don't know what's happening with that lady's career. From what I've seen, people just have a hate on for her no matter she does.

The world right now still think of men as more superior than women in general. Think of another world that if the same thing happens, the men will have a bigger backlash (like you are the one who left your family because of another person)?Married people are not sacred; you should have the ability, responsibility and intelligence (if you don’t have self control) to know what you should do when the feelings aren’t the same anymore. At least that’s what I think you should have.

I suppose people’s feelings can change, but there are ways to deal with it properly without anyone’s misfortune. And as far as I’m concerned, many women want to settle down properly, whereas their men see to be on a hidden agenda to hunt down beautiful and shiny and younger women.

Anyway, I think it might stem from the fact that women know women, and they don’t know men. Women are men’s mothers. They know and expect how other women, their daughters and other women should behave. They give a pass to men simply because they aren’t them. They give harsh judgment on other women maybe from their sense of superiority (eg, I would never do that if I was in her shoes (cos I’m better than her), when in fact, both men and women are at fault. I don’t know. It’s just my 2 cents.

(a) what is the line of professional & personal life?

I have no idea. I do not like to get into marital/family affairs tbh, no one knows what happens in someone else's house, even if their private life seems to be exposed on the news.

For ex. I didn't like LBH that much after finding out he was cheating on my unnie LMJ. But she didn't leave him. it's her decision, she most have a reason. So I can't really have an opinion about it, I don't know anything. It's their business.

Same with this case.
I found out about their affair in a review someone made of his movie. It was kinda funny because the movie was about and actress that was having an affair with a director. And she was the one playing the actress.

For me the craziest part is that his wife refused to give him the divorce, but they kept making movies about their affair and stuff. No way they didn't see the "hate" coming. But again, that's their business, imo. I love his movies, and I still like her.

So where's the line? Idk, I think everyone draws their own lines.

(c) oh the sexism/misogyny at play that she's the homewrecker at fault who deserved to lose everything while the guy who left and cheated (and had a history of cheated) can still go on working.
He has the freedom of being his own boss, so I'm guessing that helped.

(d) can people ever come back from such scandals?
Yes, they do. People that have done actual crimes came back, so yeah...

For me the interesting thing about these two is that they don't act like they want to come back. At least that's the vibe their movies give me. Like they're in their own world.
