More Seoul observations and stories:

One night I was walking around a working class neighborhood when I stumbled across perhaps the original “I (HEART) PIZZA CHICKEN.” I knew that restaurant was part of a k-drama but I still cannot recall which one. This location was nothing like the drama: it was a small, narrow storefront with the small area in front of the entrance that was cluttered with plastic chairs, delivery bikes, a large dirty container, appliances and a refrigerator. It was so bizarre, I passed on going in.

Coffee still everywhere. From brand name franchises to neighborhood joints to hybrid ones (like a cafe and hair salon), it overwhelms every commercial business district. But apparently it is still the place for young couples to date or college students to camp at a table with their laptop. Because of the holiday, they were not very busy. In fact, some days they were closed but opened the next day then closed the next.

I noticed a lot of cats. Feral cats. One reason may be that businesses and residences just pile up their garbage bags on the street curb. In one nearby residential neighborhood, the end of the street white trash bags were piled as high as a garbage truck (because a parked garbage truck was right next to it).

At the airport there was a young Black family (mother, father, 2 preschoolers and a newborn infant) arrived at the gate. One middle aged Korean woman quickly gave up her seat in the row so the family could sit together. Later, an elderly Korean woman asked the mother if she could hold her infant. She did and she was very happy while talking to the mother in Korean. It was a rare cross cultural moment between mothers. At first I thought this could be an American family stationed in Korea, but when the young boy zoomed past my row when playing hide and seek with his sister, their matching t-shirts said “(family name) vacation Korea.”

The scene at the airport is truly heartwarming. ❤
When I just landed in Seoul in 2019 and was confused where to go; there was a kind guy who helped me calling my accomodation so they could pick me up at the train station near Hongik Station. It was the first of many helps I received during my trip there. Those unforgettable moments were things I cherished the most.

I think so too.

3

It is a limit on the depth. It's possible to reply (comment level 3) to the reply (comment level 2) of a reply (comment level 1), but not to reply to a comment of level 4. It's very common to have this with nested comments. Otherwise it becomes quite difficult to read (with level 6 comments very narrow).

I think in 2023 3 am bath isn't a good anymore.

18-20 year young hot blood is different from adult blood. Youth surely is previous - health is all the wealth.

So 1 Jan 2024 is fighting - once more.

cold is cold - don't like it much but with cold comes the best of foods - from fruits to vegetables to dry nuts and whatnot.

I prefer it this way. fight on. -

2018 - 2019 - 2020 -2021 - talked about culture - Everyone has their own food culture - individual - whatever the society does or not matters not much - 2024 should go vegan -

Some consider Eggs veg. - many others non veg. - I don't want to waste time over it so i'll go ahead with non-veg as same as all dairy products with lacto veg.

Now if u eat pastries and cakes and anything that uses eggs - not urgent but still - then Lacto-vo veg.

As said so many times before your culture is yours - I don't drink or has ever touched meat and almost always stayed away from fast food and artificial drinks - whereas social culture is completely different or can be different and mostly is differently - completely generic fastfood culture.

No one can imose or force you to dine with them or farm their fancy gourmet - egging - peer pressure - social pressure nonsense works and raped by tv media but if others have any respect for you and you are firm on your way of life then no one should and not many would force you.

I had said before i want to taste sea food - not done so far and if as things go 1 jan 2024 - vegan will be on and as i'm all dependent on dairy products i'll be in a good pinch in cold season - the real challenging months coming.

politics time - i aligned two biggest elections in 2022 itself and aimed at both in 2021 and now in 2023 things have become much much entertaining -
state elections withing few weeks in one - and general aka major election n april-may
The biggest election - in sept-oct
1st election team is quite tech-social media phenomena - very much like Philippines elections or 2016 biggest election. They used AI tools in their campaigns and AI became hit among general public later. they hav good diaspora who is wealthy and funds democrats and at home they side with right wing nutjobs. liberal for yourself and authoritative for others - use a system and benefits from it and when others try to use the same system - start to point fingers and claim u will do this n that - who is it - FEW CANDIDATES fighting for representation - aka the earlier migratory birds. two of them are in UK too.

Debates are happening and they are really entertaining ones. Does any of these candidates even deserve to be there - the current is trash and the next would be not good either - the state of politics.

Indian subcontinent diaspora is quite politically active the earlier migrants whose 2nd or 3rd gen is in politics can't be named diaspora but these are the cooks who seek the same vote by intentionally evoking and playing the diaspora card.

Surprisingly Chinese Diaspora is not as much political achiever as you expect from them.

USA Election Vs. UK election Vs. India Election.

I don't even watch or have interest in A Good Day to be a Dog and I feel for the folks who are into it. It must be frustrating that it always seems to be preempted plus it only airs one episode a week. I know I have been annoyed every time that has happened to a show I was watching (May I Help You & The Kidnapping Day). It definitely makes it feel like one should just wait until the series ends to try it out

SBS really did the actors and those of us watching THE KILLING VOTE wrong. 12 episodes. Episode one aired Thursday, August 10. Episode 12 will air (if it isn’t preempted) next Thursday, November 16.
I would love to see a spin-off so that Park Hae-jin could continue in the role of Detective Kim Moo-chan. It is like this role was written for him. He’s been great in this part.
Kim Moo-chan has been the best kdrama cop for me since Kim Nam-gil’s criminal profiler Song Ha-young in SBS’s THROUGH THE DARKNESS (2022) (Viki US). SBS can produce excellent crime dramas but the airing schedule needs more thought.

It was scheduled to air one episode a week but there was 3 week gap between episodes 7 and 8. Then there was a 2 week gap between episodes 10 and 11. Episode 11 aired yesterday and hopefully episode 12 (final) will air next Thursday. I have been watching on Amazon Prime in the US.

I have a wild fantasy, that all that time is used to make sure there isn't a fatal drop in quality from the middle of the season, as so often is. Instead, the writers are thinking the script through, checking that their ideas match up while they brush up and sand down the dialogue.

Once upon a time, I read a manga called Perfect World which is about a wheelchair bound architect and former classmate reuniting and dating. When I first read it, I instantly thought this seemed like the perfect story to be adapted to kdrama (I don't think it's been done).

The thing is, I don't know if wheelbound bound characters are shown in kdramas especially for a prolonged period of time and I don't know if there's backlash or issues when able bodied people take roles of folks with handicaps & disabilities. (Yes, I know there have been deaf/hard of hearing characters onscreen played by hearing actors)

I thought it would be fine since a drama could include flashbacks to before the character was in a wheelchair but yeah, I think about this every now and then. Would this be a good adaptation? Could this be adapted nowadays? Would any actors want to play that role?

Lee Kyu-hyung played a wheelbound character in Life. Went to medical school, graduated amongst the top of his class and became a HIPAA guy. His character was a prominent one.

There's also a wheelbound character in My Ahjussi - one of the MLs siblings.

Both characters were well received amongst the ton of other disabled characters in dramaland that got otherwise.

In the manga I mentioned, the wheelchair bound character is the MAIN male character and so far, I don't think any of the shows mentioned featured those characters in a main role. So now I wish the manga could be adapted even more haha

To have the main character going through all that and still showing that even with his hardships, he still manages to have a satisfying life and someone to be with.

Me neither for My Mister. I remember the ML had 2 brothers. One who got a bit famous early for a movie he wrote but then was never able to reproduce his success and he blamed the failure of his next movie on that actress but it was his issue all along. They almost have a relationship but he refuses to pull her down again and she regains her courage as an actress and her fame. This brother starts a cleaning business with the other brother and actually seems to enjoy the work. I believe there are only these 2 brothers and neither is in a wheelchair. Maybe a different show with a similar name?

2

Required fields are marked *

Or maybe you are thinking of the grandma who is disabled and needs the ML to carry her up the stairs. The inability to walk may have occurred later in life though. She also is deaf too I think.

1

I agree it is not that easy to give opportunity to people with the ailment or handicap that is meant to be portrayed if that person is supposed to be different some of the time.
Also, if, to take an example, the character has spastic cramps at certain times in the script, I do not suppose someone actually suffering from palsy can just control when and how to look cramping.
There is also (and this part is really unjust, but ...) if there are very few roles for some certain handicap, then there will also not be so many actors and actresses that have experience - and they won't get it easily, either, because there will only be a role maybe every second or third year.
Another unjust problem is that it is easier to hire someone who can go places that are not handicap friendly. It would of course be better to raise awareness of lack of access, so that it would be easier every year to find locations that had good accessibility.
And of course it would be great if there were more supporting roles for diverse people - not in stories about being different, but just in stories where maybe the local convenience store had someone in wheelchair behind the register, or some other more or less marginalised group.

I don’t know what the laws are in SK, but the US passed the Americans With Disabilities Act, making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of disability. There are codes requiring accommodations for buildings, sidewalks, public transportation, parking, ATMs, etc. to be fully accessible.

There was a drama (I think it was Would You Like a Cup of Coffee? in which a customer had trouble entering a cafe because she couldn’t get her wheelchair over the threshold without assistance. The cafe manger put in a ramp after that.

If I recall correctly, Namkoong Min's brother was disabled in a wheelchair. But he was discriminated against until he was hired by the team because he was a baseball stat genius.

I believe in Korea, there are three societal pillars: health, education and wealth. Negative elements of each one is fine for a dramatic plot, but it not a part of the cultural representation of the ideal Korean person (very healthy/fit, well educated/smart and gainfully employed/rich).

I think it's possible, as part of the trend of making dramas about disabled people in order to break Korean prejudices. In the Korean mentality, so to speak, the "folk mentality", where is opinion of some people that if someone is ugly, disabled or poor, it means that they did something bad in their "previous life". It's something that no one would openly admit, but rather something that persists among some people. The same applies to wealth, that someone deserves it because he apparently led a previous life in accordance with the will of the god(s). There is also such a thing as the belief that pretty people are good because God favors them, and therefore they deserve more from life. That's why in Korea people strive so hard for perfection. In a sense, this is supposed to be a visible sign of blessing from the gods.

"I don't know if there's backlash or issues when able bodied people take roles of folks with handicaps & disabilities. (Yes, I know there have been deaf/hard of hearing characters onscreen played by hearing actors)"
There is no such thing. There will soon be a drama where ML is deaf and played by a hearing actor. In South Korea, I don't think there has ever been a case of this type, where there have been protests from viewers on such matters. The only thing they care about is whether the actor is pretty/slim enough for the role.

In 2014, Park We was paralyzed from an accident. In 2019, Park decided to start his YouTube channel, WERACLE, to encourage disabled people like him to never give up. It's also meant to show the non-disabled how even a person in a wheelchair can live a life filled with gratitude. WERACLE is a combination of Park’s name and the word miracle. We is also meant to include the rest of humanity. Today, WERACLE has more than 548,000 subscribers. He has done videos on the challenges of being disabled, he has written a book, and has interviewed many celebrities.

The current terminology preferred by the communities is people with disabilities as they don’t want to and shouldn’t be defined solely by their disabilities. It is also congruent with international human rights norms. Unfortunately, Korean hasn’t adopted the preferred terminology as yet.

Didn't Song Hye Kyo have a doctor or hospital administrator friend in a wheelchair in Descendants of the Sun? Also the ML's brother in Stove League (what a great series). Although it's probably difficult for many reasons to use actors with the same conditions IRL as the characters they're playing, I still enjoy and appreciate the inclusion of these characters in stories.

Much to my own surprise, I've watched two very good dramas featuring female leads in wheelchairs: Jirisan and 365: Repeat the Year. Both times were unexpected, I wasn't aware that the main character would be using a wheelchair. I enjoyed Jirisan a lot, it was different from other dramas in many ways. One unique aspect was the female lead becoming injured in the course of the drama. It was so natural and understated. She was still very much herself, just in a wheelchair. Actually, the more I think about Jirisan, the more I like it. I think it's now my favorite drama by this particular screenwriter. The female lead in 365 was already in a wheelchair when the drama begins, and it's mostly seen through a negative light. You see the female lead struggling to come to terms with the accident that caused her life to dramatically change. However in Jirisan, the female lead has a similar life-changing incident, but the screenwriter doesn't show the character's inner struggles much. Instead, she shows you how her life changes, how her colleagues treat her a little differently than before. How when she could easily scale a mountain, now she has to crawl across a bridge on her hands and knees. Jirisan actually does a really good job of depicting a wheelchair bound person. Just thinking about it makes me sigh because the drama had really beautiful moments.

Anyway, it occurred to me that the prevalence of kdrama gifs, which I've seen not only on Dramabeans but all the other forms of social media (facebook, instagram, tiktok, etc) might be part of a feedback loop (sorry for the awkward tech metaphor, can't think of what else to call it) in which actors, directors, and show editors actually think about how certain parts of their performance might look in a gif; or how they can design a scene or interaction to be something that people would choose in a gif. Or, most likely, these actors or producers are influenced by gif/meme culture, and so tend to act or design a scene in a way influenced by gifs. Of course, gifs themselves often draw on video clips and music videos, which are themselves exaggerated short form videos, so these music videos must be considered part of this gif loop.

I got thinking about this because on Seon-ha's fan wall, there are scenes of Rowoon where his expressions are exaggerated in ways that are more effective in repetitive gifs than they are when you watch them in the show itself. Now, that could just be Rowoon's acting style, and I'm not sure that Rowoon thinks about gifs, but I'm sure his background in kpop music videos, which are staged in a way that is giffable must play a role in his acting, so that could be influencing his performance

Now, I could get snarky about a type of acting that works better if it is broken up into 3-5 second intervals, but I won't. No, not only am I the cheerful, enthusiastic ray of Dramabeans sunshine, always praising actors and writers regardless of the show, such frequently giffed actors such as Rowoon, Junho and Taec-yeon are my masculine role models, whose kdramas never fail to stir deep emotions within my soul which have absolutely nothing to do with the spectacularly beautiful actresses they are always paired with.

But has anyone else thought about the role of gifs in kdramas, or at least in kdrama fan culture?

That would actually made me sad.
Thinking that an artist is doing something for a gif.

That reminds me of how choreographers now while designing kpop choreos have to think of something easy that can be used for "a challenge", instead of what they really want to do.

I don't like the idea of artists putting a limit to their imagination or accommodating to other people or trend.

Yes, its true it would be sad if that was all they were doing, but I am thinking of it kind of like an influence or a single element rather than providing a major purpose.

If it does happen, I think you are exactly right, its just like kpop choreographers putting in that "challenge" move or some sort of distinctive signature move that will characterize the dance to the song, and allow it to be replicated on Tiktok.
But I really don't know how much it runs through the minds of actors or directors.

For me it always felt like the actors or just the whole staff were having fun, and that was reflected on the screen. And that makes the viewer want to capture that moment.

Instead of facial expressions I do it with quotes/lines of the show or just something or someone that I find memorable/precious. I don't make gifs but my phone is full of screenshots of kdramas too.

I remember that it took me like an hour and a half to watch one episode of You Are My Spring because I kept taking screenshots and rewatching my favorite scenes. The dialogue was so freaking good, I felt like I had to capture EVERYTHING.

Also, maybe some directors/actors get inspired of other projects. There are a lot of gifs, memes, short videos of iconic drama scenes or comedy moments. So it's not that they were aware of the trend itself, but more like they liked the style of an specific show. Or like they say the "senseu 센스".

Idk if I explained it correctly. I hope that made sense. Those are my two theories.

Thanks for the shout-out, my friend. But as you clearly also appreciate, I’d like to think that all of us who devote ourselves to the craft of creating short clips of our beloved dramas to rearrange and recontextualize for the enjoyment of others—I’d like to think we have our own distinct styles. Cecilie, Blue, loveblossom and I (just to name a few others)—we all do it a little differently and bring different points-of-view to the table.

In the main, though, to answer your central question, I’d say no…I don’t think that ”gifs” in particular have affected the production of dramas. Maybe their promotion, but not their creation…

…unless, WAIT. That’s why we have so much Ha Joon on our screens recently! It’s for the gifs. Because, man, to paraphrase an old joke, “I just finished typing and mousing and working to capture so many of his adorable expressions, and BOY are my fingers tired.” Right, @dorotka? 😉

I believe that now there are moments that are designed to be memeable. Every writer or director probably dream of producing a legendary moment. With the memes and gifs, 15 sec of glory can be reached more easily.

I've had a weird watching and reading year because I have had allergy reactions, lost my voice often and daily getting hoarse, and I am in a terrible work situation. So I didn't finish anything or post about books or tv since about June. I know I havent been here in even longer. That was until Doona about 5 minutes ago.

It gave me a very peaceful kinda vibe. I really enjoyed that aspect. It was almost soothing to watch. I liked that it was short so I didn't give up halfway. I just have no idea how I feel about that ending. It was left open ended and for me, I want the HEA wrapped up and presented to me in a box with a pretty bow! I feel like they gave me a box of Schroëdinger's cat instead. Am not pleased.

Btw, I'm getting my voice back more consistently now and that bodes well for work. Small wins.

Hello, beanies de mi corazón. 💚
I hope you had a great week!

I just found out the show A League of Their Own was cancelled. If I really like something they always kill it.
Apparently The Bear almost got cancelled too?? Jeez.

I started the show Fresh off the Boat. I'm loving the vibe.

I also started Castaway Diva, and I'm really grateful for the dramabeans staff. Thanks to the awesome recap I didn't have to finish the horrible first episode.

Also if you spend 15 years trapped in an island I would expect you to look/act like Bok Sil from Shopping Wang Louie, not look/act like the main leads from Melting Me Softly.

This show reminds me of so many other dramas. Our Blues, SWL, Still 17, Dream High, Start Up, and even Heavenly Idol. LOL

I really like Woo Hak and Ran Joo. I'm curious about them.

That's why it sucks to get invested in shows nowadays. Granted I haven't watched new live action shows in some time but the animated shows I liked get cancelled and it just KILLS my interest in trying anything new.

The way things are nowadays, shows aren't even given a chance to grow or the shows have potential but people aren't watching them because they have a million other options and only so much time.

I think that's part of the reason I've only been watching kdramas; they already have set end date and run time so it won't be disappointing in that way. A drama has to unbelievably bad for it to be cancelled.

The crazy thing is that they even cancel shows with good ratings.
They just don't care anymore.

Yes. The only kdrama I know that got really bad treatment was A Piece of Your Mind. The ratings weren't great so they cut the episodes to 12 out of nowhere.

There's probably other similar cases, but usually they just let the show end (with the original 16 episodes).

Cancelling shows is not a recent phenomenon. The two most heartbreaking cancellations for me were both British series: The House of Eliott (1994) and The Paradise (2014).

I wonder about the future of Running Man now that Jeon So Min is leaving. She along with Lee Kwang Soo added a certain level of physical comedy and bad luck humor that made the show funny. So Min also added some innuendo which I don't think anyone has done or could do.

I've seen people talk about how the cast is old now which is why they do alot more segments that feature sitting and talking or eating; relying more on wit and banter. Like I've said, I've seen Jae Seok in other things when he was running around or being physical so I don't know how much truth there is that the cast can't physically keep up with the show anymore but recently I did have a moment where it was like "wow, they really are older now and they look it". I don't mean that in an ageist way but still, yeah, they certainly look different.

I also realized, for me, I only like/can stand Ji Seok Jin depending on who is paired with, not on his own. He's not funny or entertaining to me.

The only draw for me to the show would be Yu Jae Seok

I think it is rare for any Korean variety show to last more than 10 years. But the international fan base is what drives the network to continue making it (including a really bad spin-off).

LKS left in 2021 citing health reasons but many people thought it was hurting his acting career. Since he left he has been in 3 movies and 3 dramas (two scheduled to air in 2024). But since he left RM, he has been a lead in 4 new variety shows (including higher paying Netflix ones). Maybe, he was just tired of RM and wanted to change.

When JSM joined the cast in 2017, the rest of the year she only had 3 drama cameos. Since then she has had leads in 4 drama series and 4 drama specials. She also starred in 4 movies (two to be released in 2024).

LKS career really did not change much, but it seems JSM has capitalized on RM fame to get more work and diverse roles.

I figured they leave due to being tired of being on the show and need a change. Kwang Soo was on the show 11 years!

I didn't know Kwang Soo had been doing so much especially on the variety front. I only knew about his shows with Jae Seok (The Zone & Korea #1) and a recent one about farming or something.

I certainly didn't know So Min was still acting. People have made it sound she as if completely dried up as an actress due to the show (though I thought she joined the show in the first place cause she was going through a dry spell in her acting career)

I started watching UF. I gave up after a couple episodes. I couldn't take the way he treated the girl. Dumped her in a road in the middle of nowhere, threw her phone into the ocean, costantly yelled at her. Nah. I mean, i can't stand Bae Suzy and I also would have left her in the middle of nowhere LOL But I hate seeing men treat women like that.

In HTalk I made a new friend. She's supposed to help me with English and I'm supposed to help her with Spanish.
But she's also learning Korean! She told me she learned a little kor from kdramas! Just like me! And now she's taking classes.

It would be funny if we end up practicing Korean instead of the other two languages. LMAO

Romanization makes it more confusing.
I think it's better to use hangul and repeat the song how many times you need to get used to it.

I just think of it like trying to learn a rap song. 😂
"It's not that we're slow. The song it's too fast!" kind of mentality.
Also ballads help a lot! Some of them are really slow.

3

For a kindergartener like me, it helps to sing along actually. But in the long run, it would hinder me from improving my Hangul. That's why I stubbornly choose Hangul.😀

2

And you stubbornly chose well. You'll become a pro in no time. 😉

Postcards from my Sleepy Saturday Brain:

1. I am still in the Namgoong Min Accident Hospital Ward. Symptoms worsening after watching BEAUTIFUL GONG SHIM and now watching AWAKEN.

2. Converted another friend to K-Dramas (or at least, K-Drama Oppas). So now I have a nice little circle of people I know who send each other K-Drama clips on FB.

3. Been writing a fantasy novel for a while now and had no freakin' idea a major character looks like Ji Chang-Wook. For years, I have known what this character's build is like... and until I saw Mr Ji in action mode, I didn't know I was describing the exact same build (tall, lithe but muscular, slightly narrow shoulders). And now I have a face for him (Ji Chang-Wook's face) and hair (Meguro Ren's long sliver hair in MY HAPPY MARRIAGE). This is certainly motivation to keep on writing the character. HA!

4. I'd forgotten how shopping online on a major sales day like 11.11 can wreak havoc. Grrrr...
