[Drama Chat] Still waiting for that second season

One harmless but polarizing topic among drama fans is whether we want a sequel or not. Some people prefer to leave a masterpiece untouched while others want to see more of their beloved characters. Some days, you’re even those two peoples at the same time.

Still, whether you like them or not, multi-season dramas are now here to stay. Even if your average sequel almost never manages to live up to its promise (because the best sequel is the one we collectively wrote in the comments in the Episode 16 recap) sometimes you reaaally need an actual sequel. Y’know, for closure and sanity’s sake.

What shows are you still waiting for a sequel for, despite there being zero indication that the drama gods are interested in making one?

I don't specially like second seasons but I was waiting for Vampire Prosecutor one!

Otherwise, I would like a sequel with the sisters of One Spring Night, overall the big sister who raises her child alone and get rid of her husband, and of Unfamiliar Family with the big sister and Kwon Yul's romance and his mum being a great MIL!

I think it would be interesting to have the same concept of The Package, with a new country and a new group of tourists.

Sometimes, I don't wish a season but just one episode to get a real end, like in Heartless City and Awaken with the "mystery" of the death of the ML or Tomorrow to see the ML in the world of the living because these dramas just gave us a little piece of hope.

Vagabond!
It's not so much that it was a "masterpiece" and I'm not waiting for it since I don't think it's gonna happen but the ending made it *seem* like there was supposed to be more. After some time, I just considered it a "how we got here" story but still, if you actually watch it, it does leave you feeling like what the hell? Where's the rest of it?!
And it can also induce delirious laughter because of the balliness of starting a series with the final scene.

I honestly don't even know if I would trust a sequel. I don't know how many shows have had multiple seasons but the first one that came to mind was Taxi Driver. I watched both seasons and while S2 was pretty much a smash hit and had good performances, it was still missing that spark that made S1 better. But that could be a matter of perference. In universe, the characters are in a better place mentally & emotionally and that's a good thing but I also think S2 leaned a skotch more towards levity in part because of that. Again, not necessarily a bad thing but it's just something I always thought when watching.

D.P.2, I don't know what "went wrong" there because from what I remember, it was truly a continuation of the established world. Nothing was miraculously changed or solved but it just wasn't satisfying as S1 (from what I remember). The most interesting deserter was the singer. That was THE most affecting story in the entire season. The character and actor were the standouts (sidenote: that actor is gonna be in Weak Hero Class 2 and I *think* it's in part because of his performance here even though the characters are totally different)

Re D.P. 2. Trying to recall but for me I don’t think there was enough of Jung Hae-in’s character. He was still terrific but he became a bit tangentially involved in the investigations. His physicality continued to be outstanding. Choi Hyun-wook was a stand out in D.P. 2.

A consideration against a D.P. season 3 might be (and here things get a bit touchy) the ROK Army (as an national institution) has taken it on the chin twice in the D.P. series. D.P. definitely brought out emotional responses in SK particularly from Army veterans so I am not convinced going through it a third time would be so beneficial. It is one thing in dramas to take on the police force and politicians and business elites but taking on the military (of a nation that is technically at war) I think needs prudence.
O/T. I recalled commenting during the airing of Netflix’s BLOODHOUNDS that the ROK Marine Corps came off much better in BLOODHOUNDS than the ROK Army did in D.P.
O/T. 2. Based on the pure boxing ability displayed by Jung Hae-in in D.P. and Woo Do-hwan in BLOODHOUNDS my dream casting is to have both those guys in an action drama (maybe BLOODHOUNDS 2) but they would have to be on the same side. If those two ever went head to head against each other I don’t want to consider the outcome.

Vagabond was my immediate thought when i saw this question. It’s a very fun drama to watch up until the moment you realise they can’t possibly wrap it up and it just leaves you hanging 😭😭😭

I feel like if they do ever do a sequel they’ll have to recast the cast because getting everyone back together would be impossible to schedule.

Grid. I know that some dramas end with a cameo of solid actors that makes you wish for a second season, like Kim Soo-hyun taking over Man-wool's job in Hotel Del Luna. I'm very sure a number of beanies and viewers would love lurve to see a second season with Kim Soo-hyun headlining the cast.

Grid gave a last minute cameo of Yoo Jae-myung(villainous I presume) and an intro into the universe of time travelling lady.
I know writer Lee Soo-yeon has written a second season before a la Stranger so I'm hoping there'll be news soon. But with Dominant Species in the works, I don't know if I should bide Grid 2 goodbye.

A second season of Insider.
A second season of Strangers Again? where I pray they right the wrongs they failed to straighten out in the first season.

I'd want them back in all honesty. They have chemistry, a burning one. And they seems to still love each other despite becoming strangers again twice.
I'll want them back where they really end the cycle of being strangers and never part.

If they are going to repeat the cycle they did in season 1, then I'll be better off without a season 2 and if a season 2 is okayed, I'll be better off with them one sunset apart.

It's a pity, but hey, it's like that.
Korean version can get an identity with cold blue-gray colors. I don't dislike it, as I watched it twice, it's more about comparison.

FOS2 is quite different from FOS1 in terms of storytelling and pacing. One could feel bored for the first half but when ‘everything’ shown in the first half was pulled together to its finale is one of the most spectacular storytelling’s I’ve seen. From that perspective, there are comments that S2 is more superior than S1. A S3 will be most welcome as I can watch the CSW and BD pairing forever.

My Liberation Notes. I want to see Chang Hee as a funeral director and have some Six Feet Under like stories. Mr. Gu needs to sober up and figure out how to liberate his life from the club life. Mi Jeong and Mr. Gu could see if they could actually be a couple or if his alcoholism would get in the way. The sequel could explore the older sister's potential step mom story too. But mostly, I want to see Lee Minki play a funeral director because there would be a lot to do with that.

As a person who didn't read the book, the storyline was pretty confuse.

For example, they were crying over the death of the aunt, but I couldn't feel anything because I had no idea who she was... She wasn't in the past storyline.

But my main issue is they made the FL like a supporting character of her own story.

4
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

I read the book (after watching the first episode then thinking maybe I should read the book first) and you hit the nail on the head re my criticisms: the time-hopping broke the continuity in the book especially how the FL was the connecting thread, really the anchor, of the whole story throughout her life, and overall I felt the book was more female-centric. I really think that they played with the time not just to give themselves more flexibility but in particular it seemed to me like they got a studio note to add more storylines for male characters, so much of those you see in the show are not in the book and the women's roles are reduced. In the book there is a refrain that it's a woman's lot to suffer, and yeah, in showbiz too. But I loved the dancing segments.

Not really. My reason for getting into K-drama was really its one season format after getting burnt by multi season shows that most often than not could never wrap gracefully.

Be it good, bad, or ugly. I will take it as it is and be done with it rather than watch it dying slowly over multiple seasons.

13

Required fields are marked *

For the majority of dramas I feel the same way. They are built to tell a single story. Once they do that, whether the ending was fabulous or crashed and burned, the story has been told. I think my list of second seasons are for dramas I can already see a bit of the western premise/style in how the show was made. Or one's where i felt like the story didn't actually finish and I want that ending.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

1000 times yes. Heck yes. All the yesses. Not that I've never been burned by a drama finale before, but I will always emphatically choose one complete narrative arc, for better or worse, seen through to its planned conclusion over watching beloved shows time and again slowly morph over seasons into unrecognizable caricatures of themselves that slowly amble and fizzle into the oblivion of cancellation.

4

Required fields are marked *

That's one of the inherent draws of Kdramas, isn't it? You're not just entertaining yourself with the same format case of the week/patient of the week/dramatic family drama of the week. You're following a complete story headed towards a (hopefully) happy ending.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Not gonna lie though, it's impressive that you feel like you've never been burned by a Kdrama ending. See below for a few that I would consider to have endings that could have been better/turned into a train wreck/messed with my heart and then left it by the curbside:

I avoided Cheese in the Trap and dropped Snowdrop after I heard about the ending, but got burned by He Is Psychometric, L.U.C.A. and The Ghost Detective. Some others, like Train and Tempted could have been tied off more neatly. I hesitate to add too many "the couple didn't stay together" endings here in this category because sometimes that can still be really satisfying, even if it hurts. I do want to mention though that the ending doesn't mean I didn't like the show - I LOVE Train, enjoyed LUCA, and love Tempted. I just think the ending didn't live up to the rest of the drama.

SPOILER AHEAD

It is just irrationally unbelievable that he never ever touched his brother?? And was never surprised that he completely avoids him despite expressing so much love?? They just decided to pick the character most guaranteed to break the hero's heart, giving no thought at all to logic.

1

Right?!! It's a favorite of my husband's though, so I can't bash it too hard haha

2

The only one I can think of is honestly Song of the Bandits. That drama could have been so good and interesting, and I totally had fun watching 90% of it, but by the end it just seemed so ridiculously unfinished. I read somewhere that it was cut down to nine episodes from an original planned 20 which, if true, is wild. And totally makes the rushed ending and lack of characterization make more sense. I guess really what I want is just a slightly longer, richer story from the first season, but it also felt like an unsatisfying place to leave the story, so I’d be open to a second season for this one.

The ending of "Move to Heaven" seemed to be setting up the next season, and I think its episodic format would lend itself well to another, short season.

Don't worry, not as late as me.. I still haven't watched it *hides*

I know I'm going to like it, actually, based on what I've heard and clips I've seen - I just want to save it for when I feel like I have nothing being offered in dramaland at the moment and want a good show to tide me over.

The issue is the production talked about a second season before even asking PEB's opinion about it.

That's interesting. They wrapped it up just fine to keep it to one season. It was just so good

For the record, I'm generally squarely in the camp of One and Done and think that most sequels currently being made should have been left on the whiteboard where they belong.

Having made the appropriate disclaimer...

Oh please please drama Gods, give us a second season of Skunk sorry Stealer: Treasure Keeper. (Although I have to give the show props for parodying Healer and then literally alluding to it in its own name).

Let's get the band back together! Let's take down the bad guy! Let's have hijinks! Let's have kissing!

Oh dear, I said typed that out loud.

The others have already been mentioned and that is Grid, although I'm still not sure if she intended to write a second season or wanted us to be left with the ambiguity of it all. Nonetheless, if anybody can write it, it's Lee Soo-yeon. In Writernim we trust.

Finally, it's Circle. Although I'm not sure we need an entire second season, maybe a film. Although if that happened it would invalidate all my wilder interpretations of the show.

Circle is so cheap and so niche that it could easily be remade with a bigger budget and more episodes, although if that happened it might lose its chaotic, low-budget charm. A movie sequel would probably be best.

I am also generally in the camp of "one season is enough", but there is the occasional show that I feel just leans towards the right episodic format or has rich enough content for a spin-off.. or a bad enough ending I just need a second season ahaha

This might be a controversial take and answer, but for me, I’m always waiting for a second season of “Scarlett Heart: Ryeo”. Sure, the writing was a bit all over the place; Sure, not everyone who was a character needed to be a character; Most of all, there was lots of miscasting. Yet, because the OTP was just so, so, so, so good, they are reason enough for me to want a Season 2. I want to be able to see Lee Ji Eun (IU, but she’s credited under her real name for the drama, so I’ll go with that) and Lee Joon Gi doing well together in a new lifetime— being happy, and getting all that their love story deserves. More so than anything, I want to be able to see Hae Soo have the happy life that she so deserves, because she was everything to everyone but hardly anyone was ever there for her (something that I feel the Korean version captured more and more beautifully than the OG Chinese version, which painted the FL to be more selfish). And I mean, who doesn’t want to see Lee Joon Gi & IU do another drama together?? 🥰🥰😍😍

OMG, Scarlett Heart Ryeo is my first and most epic heartbreak. I have never been hurt as much by a drama before or since. If they even gave it just one episode, I would be content. I still remember my friend and I looking at the time and being like, where is he? WHERE is he? WHERE IS he? WHERE IS HE? until the last second. This is not controversial at all.

I….. yea….. When it was airing and when I was reading the recaps, the comments made by the one recapping, and then the comments section of the recaps, I understood where people were coming from, but at the same time, in typically the outlier and don’t go with the flow of the masses 98% of the time haha So MY personal experience with the drama wasn’t bad. The drama does have its weak spots—like I said— but the acting of the leads really kept me and held my heart. Even to this day, my love for them as an OTP and my wanting to see them collab again is still as intense as when “Scarlett Heart: Ryeo” happened ♥️ So kudos to Lee Joon Gi and Lee Ji Eun

When THE FIERY PRIEST ended with a bold promise of a sequel, I was sooo hyped for it... but then writer's next drama *cough* VINCENZO *cough* happened and my enthusiasm took a huge dive. I'm not that sure anymore that it would be able to reach that level again, let alone aim higher. Seems like we're getting the one after all, so let's wait and see.

THE GUEST movie likely won't happen anymore, which is sad, I though it was a neat idea.

Not the season 2 per se, but when HYENA and SUITS (SK version) were on air, I repeatedly said I'd watch 50+ episodes of them in a heartbeat. Dream on lol)))

When it comes to polarizing shows where I love some parts and loathe others, I'm firmly in the "nope" camp. More of an undercooked meal is still just an undercooked meal.

I want to see a rom com sequel where they transition to coping with family life and having a small child and a baby. The OTP are exhausted, the in-laws are meddling and the FL is struggling with juggling work, family, and her changing relationship with the ML. I feel like A Business Proposal could do this. The ML was supposed to be so competent. What happens when a baby throws him off his game. I’d actually be interested to see what My Demon would do with this. I would cut out all the serial killer stuff and just see how they would do with a baby. Is the baby human or demon? Do they try to keep the child grounded in the real world or use magic (conflict ensues). Also, what happens as everyone ages except the ML?

👋🏾Welcome to the comments section.
This is a great topic for conversation. In dramas like She was pretty you get a 1 minute glimpse of the family with a child. In the excellent weekender Once again they showed a family with twins and the different ways the parents manage the kids going to nursery after being looked after at home.

There are plenty multi-season shows i love, but usually i am really statisfyed with a single wrapped season which happens often in kdrama. But there are still a few kdrama were i really want to see more content.

Signal (probably a pick for many, there has been talk for years of making a season 2...)

Through the Darkness (it's probably a little tricky since they were adapting true crime cases and a book, but i would love seeing these characters with new stories)

Inspector Koo (this was such a fun show, i loved how creative the cinemaphotography was. There were still plenty questions open for a second season and i loved the cast so much, i want to know more about them. Also, female serial killers are so rare in kdrama, i want to see more of this!!)

Move to Heaven (cried through all ten 10 episodes, would love to cry through another 10 👍. They already teased a second season in the season finale and we have plenty of rushed plot-points that they could use for season 2. )

Train (i just loved how interesting the sci-fi concept was, you would probably do and infinete amount of seasons since we are travelling parallel universes here lol)

Moving (or well, rather the extended universe of the moving webtoon artist. He adapted his moving webtoon and Plans to adapt his other works, i hope that works out for him. It's a little tricky since many of his previous works don't feature characters from moving but instead introduce new ones, this could disappoint the kdrama fans, but you need them introduced if he wants to eventually adapt the moving sequel, since characters from all his works play a part there)

Of course, how could i forget, were is the sequel and prequel to Strangers from Hell?? I remember years ago they promised they would adapt those in the kdrama format, but somehow i am still stuck here reading the badly google-translate translated webtoons.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo (really happy season 2 was announced but it will take a few years since one of the actors is doing his military service. I want to see more of the FL's brother! I liked his young actor since the King of Pigs. Attroney Woo hasn't a perfect autism representation at all, i think it has quite a few flaws with it, introducing more autistic characters would probably help the show for the better. They hinted that the FL's mother and brother might also be on the autism spectrum, i hope they explore that next season)

Wow, i actually managed to find quite a lot of shows that i want a second 2 off.

There are a few more with "open ending" that i watched (Mouse, the Kidnapping Day, the Killing Vote) but i don't need a second season at all. I think teasing more/leafing some stuff open can sometimes be fitting to the story without it needing a second season (A few unanswered keep the fandom and discussions alive from my experience lol) It's like a version of the "and they lived happily ever after" you know which direction the characters lives will take...

Oh yes Moving! How could I forget about that! It would be so great to learn more about that world and its inhabitants. I don't think of a linear storyline here but just a kind of...augmentation of what we saw in the first installment. There had already been hints to a number of different characters and stories more or less related to what we already saw, so they could just go on and complete the picture a bit more. I'd be so there for that.

I'm still tormented by the lack of a Sarah Connor Chronicles season 3. I know that's not a k-drama but I just have to get that out there.

As for k-dramas, I can't think of one that's crying out for another season but there are a few I think you could crank out new seasons and it'd be fun, like Healer and Gaus Electronics.

I would love love to see “Move to Heaven” have more seasons and of course “Like Flowers in Sand”. I’m having serious withdrawal symptoms about the LFIS. If I could, I would trade the majority of what DB is recapping now for more LFIS. Anyday.

Thank you. Glad you agree even if you prefer the one and done format generally.
I feel that this “one and done” format encourages too much drivel to be produced and not enough time for someone like me who likes superior shows/dramas to have seasons so I can linger and ‘live within’ these universes for a while longer. The few of us who watched, commented and loved LFIS have had to move on because it ended after 12 eps and that’s all folks! I feel weird asking other beanies to keep talking about LFIS even if I have really want to. I am not made for this “one and done” format but have to put up with it if I want to find ‘the pearls among the refuse’.

Vagabond is my top pick in this topic. The screenwriter/s cheated me, and made me feel stupid for putting in what 16 hours? on a show that ended cheap. Shame, shame.

I'd gladly watch a second season of Vincenzo, Celebrity, the delightful Love to Hate You and the recent Netflix show The Brothers Sun. There are others already mentioned including Hyena, My Liberation Notes and Moving. But really, I'm fantasizing on that second season of Crash Landing where they present us with offspring. Imagine...

VAGABOND.
And the most frustrating about that, it's made by the duo writers of Giant and Empress Ki. Then, they didn't make a big saga since this drama. But I think they had that in mind with Vagabond. I feel like they had planned what's coming next, and with 2 or 3 seasons, make a great saga of this kind.

You see, I'm someone who does not like sequels (Frozen 2 still better than Frozen 1 tho) because to me, if you ended something, that should be it.

Having said that, I want Signal 2. I need it in my life. You can't end it with such an ending. It's criminal!!!!

I wish for a happy ending for Heartbeat.

I want Good Job and Stealer: The Treasure Keeper to keep doing what they do.

I need the Goblin and Grim Reaper hi-jinks. They can also solve mysteries together. ❤
