[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Spying through a paper screen

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Spying through a hole in a paper screen

Your mission:

Hunt down all the scenes where a character pokes a hole in a paper screen in order to peep through. This is usually to carry out some low-key espionage in a historical setting, but any scenes of spying through a screen will count in this round.

Thanks @RedFox for this treasure hunt idea!

Reference drama:

The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract (Episode 1)

Also, Jung-woo was going to spy on the couple in the first romance book (The one with a woman welcoming home her husband) he opened, when he was interrupted.

Having just posted a music video from Under the Queen's Umbrella this one is top of mind. There's a dramatic screen peeping scene in this drama, although the screen is already ripped...

In The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract, people wanted to watch the first night of the couple but Sawol made them leave. The FL tried to find her fiancee too.

I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I wish he could be teaching her martial arts. It would be so cool if she could actually defend herself, maybe not at near-superhero level, but - like a trained person, someone who has a chance in a fight.

The whole neighborhood comes out to peek through a hole in the door in episode 3 of 100 Days My Prince when our dear OTP spends their (first) wedding night together.

It's for the couple's own good that everyone assembles, of course, as they're very worried that Won-deuk's amnesia might mean, ahem, that he's also forgotten how to perform his wedding night responsibilities. They're really there to help out 😉

I remember the ones in 100 Days My Prince, The Matchmakers, The Secret Romantic Guesthouse and The Story of Park's Marriage Contract which were already mentioned. I like Park's the best since she was trying to take a peek on the face of the ugly bachelor.

I was going to mention this, too - I think there's a minimum of one instance of screen-peeping per sageuk! 🤔 😁

The Red Sleeve episode 7: Court Lady Seo (the nice one) pokes a hole to see what’s going on with the Crown Prince’s fateful bath and nearly has a heart attack when she sees Deok Im changing her clothes. Incidentally, the CP does a bit of spying himself on Deok Im thanks to a well-placed mirror and sees the tattoo on her shoulder.

I think there is one in Mr. Queen.

Yes, I was about to mention it. I think she pokes holes into the paper wall to check if she can escape unnoticed... But I'll need to rewatch it to be able to name the correct episode. I'm thinking probably episode 2, which would be the queen's first episode with a new soul. But it could be later!
