[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Female leads giving piggyback rides

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Female leads giving piggyback rides

Your mission:

Piggyback rides are the stuff that K-dramas are made of, but it’s less often that we see the female lead doing the lifting. When it happens, there’s a chance our hero has had one drink too many and can’t get home on his own (prime example: Kiss Sixth Sense when our female lead is dumping the man of her dreams off her back and onto her couch). But no matter the circumstance — and no matter who she’s carrying — any female lead giving a piggyback ride counts in this round.

Reference drama:

Kiss Sixth Sense (Episode 6)

Yes, she gives Han Gyul 3 piggyback rides-once to his house up the stairs, once to the dojang, and once from the deck to his bed—all while he is passed out.

The character who leaped to mind immediately for this prompt for me was the young mother Lee Mi-hyun carrying her exceptionally fleet-footed son Kim Bong-seok on her back--often tied to her back--for years as they both began the process of learning how he would eventually fly away from her.

And then...when she needed him as a young man, and he carried her. Ugh. Rivers of tears.

Not the exact FL, but halmeoni sure did carry her son around in STRONG GIRL NAM-SOON to get him to the doctor’s appointment and back. (Hard eye rolls all around.)

Also Nam-soon carried the ML, when he had a minor accident when they went to snoop around in a warehouse. Wasn’t a piggy back ride though. 🤔

Maybe both of these don’t count then. 😂 I’ll see myself out.

I’m sure somewhere in My Girlfriend is A Gumiho Mi-ho carries Daewoong but I can’t remember if it’s a piggyback specifically - but definitely there’s a scene that plays off piggybacks where the Action Director attempts to give the Aunt a back hug but falls asleep on her back instead 😄

I don't think Mi Ho fully piggy backed him, he was joking around (pretending he was weak so he could lean on her) but she thought he was serious and attempted to pull him on her back. Ahh, Mi Ho is such a sweetheart haha.

The aunt crumbled under the director's weight but she made it to the loft haha

First one that come to mind - 'I Picked Up A Celebrity on The Street'. After thinking she's murdered Sung Hoon the heroine has to piggyback her very tall victim up to her 'rooftop villa' with the intention of dismembering the body.

The one I most remember is Kook Yeon Su carrying a drunk Choi Ung home. Frail Kim Dami does not look like she can carry tall Choi Woo Shik but she managed to do so and she did it a few times based on the BTS footage.

Both Bong-soon and Nam-soon carried their MLs bridal-style.

I like all the piggybacking in Coffee Prince. 🤣

I loved it in Our Beloved Summer, which has also been mentioned.

In Still 17 the FL carries the ML in a wheelbarrow.
