Premiere Watch: Doctor Slump

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Rom-com, medical
Episode count: 16
Global streamer: Netflix

Reasons to watch: Woo hoo, cute rom-com alert! Park Shin-hye and Park Hyung-shik are teaming up to bring us Doctor Slump, the story of two doctors who have reached rock bottom in their lives. They knew each other as students when they fought for the #1 spot in their class, but now life is very different [and our hero Park Hyung-shik is very swoony].

While the ratios for the healing/romance/medical elements are still unknown (I’m hoping for 50/40/10), the fact that we’ve got one of the screenwriters from My Roommate is a Gumiho here bodes well, since that drama managed to juggle a lot of things and still be fun. In terms of the cast, we can also look forward to Yoon Park, Gong Sung-ha, Jang Hye-jin, and Hyun Bong-shik.

TL;DR: Park x Park cuteness in a story of hitting rock bottom but finding healing and happiness once again

Yes! Sorry if this was obscure, it’s what PHS’s character says in Strong Woman when Bong-soon is being adorable and he doesn’t know what to do with himself. It’s now what lots of people say whenever PHS does something adorable like ~existing~ 😍

I remember that scene it’s one of the popular ones that pop up everywhere🥰 I love it when characters say that word.

3

hahahaha! Existing......lol!

3

Hehehe... great explanation for muggles. I love the ~ existing~ part!! 😍

3

While even the most hard core of fans would find it difficult to defend ALL parts of Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. Some parts are truly iconic and have become not only eminently quotable but legit legendary!! 🔥

4

^^ Ottoke @CecilieDK re: SWDNS's cult status and PHS ~existing~.

1

@seeker thanks for the correct spelling. I wrote it phonetically because I couldn’t remember how I found it last time I looked it up.

1

Ah! No worries @Reply1988 If we were to spell check each thread ... okay too scary to go there. 🤣

1

As a 2PM fan, ottoke has a completely different connotation for me! 😆

1

In oettoekaji’, the ji’ part is one of the many endings which can be added to a verb stem. It serves a number of purposes including confirming something you already know but not entirely sure (in intimate speech). Also, if you are talking to yourself/posing a qn to yourself, you would use that ending.

Thank you for the mini language lesson, I am always learning. I just assumed it was one of the politeness terms as most of the time I hear the word they say it without that ending.

2

What did you folks think? Is this half "mystery drama" (to solve how PHS was framed) and half "revenge drama" (to get back at how PSH has been treated)?

3
11
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don’t think revenge, but I do think the mystery will need to be solved. Hopefully the desire to help right a wrongly framed situation is what the 2ML will do and that is how he meets 2FL as well. Unfortunately what Haenul experienced is too common in medicine- bullying, overworking subordinates and then blaming them for failures. I had a senior once try to join a paper after it had been written and he had done none of the work.

6
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I would really love that story arc of the 2ML. Its awesome when they not only have their own story but also a loveline. 2ML/FL having their own importance in the drama apart from hanging around the OTP and / or entangling the OTP loveline is good writing! 👍 👏

5

I bet the senior couldn’t see why joining the process after the fact would be a problem!

4

Unfortunately this type of work bullying in not just in medicine. 😪 @Reply1988 Good point. Such "seniors" feel justified in taking credit for the "team" work without acknowledging the person/s who actually worked.

2

I think the mystery will be resolved early because the drama focuses more on healing and rom com.

3

reply

Required fields are marked *

It would be a different drama if mystery was focused on as an important plot point. It would create an imbalance within the plot. I too hope it is not emphasized upon.

2

He has a long way to go. He is billions in debt, his friends have left him. A doctor who shot to fame on social media and then shot down by that same social media (I loved how they made ths turn for a very young doctor, he becomes the star when everyone else is still turning out their thesis papers), his healing will have to come from many different ends. To recreate the magical connection and trust he had earlier would be a journey in itself.
In all honesty, we just have to look at what happened in recent times due the social media exploding on half truths.

4

I don't think the "mystery" would be dealt with anything but cursorily as an aside. I don't think there is any "revenge" angle either. 🤞

So what, exactly, will be spending 15 more episodes on??

2

@attiton Rom-com with a sprinkling of healing like a cherry on top! No drinking please, thank you very much - side eyeing that Jeju drama.

3

@attiton Rebuilding the trust I think would be his biggest challenge. He went all out very early - talent, name, fame, no real hardship and it comes crashing down. She works like a zombie and finds out it means nothing at the end to the true achivements in life. She carries the expectations of the people around her, but also that she is hard on herself.
They would make such an awesome team - he the surgeon, she the anesthesiologist.
The other thing that surprised me is that their chemistry is spot on. I always knew PHS could work his charm on a rock, but PSH is surprising me and in a good way.

Crossing my fingers here. I am getting more nervous about romcoms more than thriller dramas these days as writers tend to do a weird mix. Genuinely hoping this one turns out nice. The two Parks are reuniting and I am excited for it.

What about giants or beanpoles? What do you suppose they sprout? Because at 183CM/ 6-ft., PHS is a giant to me, me being only 4’10 😅😅😅

3

@bebeswtz Well IMO flowers can make everything better. Giants, Beanpoles, Flower boys. Even the 190.5 cms (6 feet, 3 inches) Groot i.e. Rowoon.

4

@bebeswtz the two beanpoles in question - Hyungsik and Groot aka Rowoon - sprout heart eyes, of course! Not quite sure about flowers, but it's entirely possible as well - after all, they're both of a flowery beanpoles class...

@seeker wow, it's 190.5 now? Someone's been watered well lately!

4

@Gikata @bebeswtz

Ta da!! Pictures of Park Hyung-sik and Rowoon spouting flowers!!

2

@Gikata @bebeswtz

Apparently Rowoon was so embarrassed about his height that early in his career he said he was only
189 cms i.e. 6 feet, 2 inches. 🤣

There was also an issue about who to cast alongside him in The King’s Affection.

3

@seeker awww, they're in full bloom indeed! Guess the spring is really coming - my neighborhood cats certainly think so, if the last night's free concert was any indication...

Yeah, I've noticed that being outside of golden 180-something range is not very desirable in this field whether you're shorter OR higher... My current favorite Chinese human beanpole has the same struggles apparently - to the point of outright refusing to reveal the exact number, only reluctantly admitting it's above 190))) But he sprouts flowers too, bless!

I totally binged the first episode as soon as it dropped and I personally think it is striking a very nice balance between comedy, drama and a bit of mystery. PHS and PSH are mostly doing the comedy during their high school year and although I was worried about them pulling it off I think it’s working. They seem reasonable as students or at least better than the couple in Samdari. The scenes in the OR and the aftermath of that were heartbreaking.

I sluurrped the first episode. Brownie points:
Both look very at home in school uniforms. I was worried about this part, but a certain innocence in both shines through.
The pacing is excellent. Some in-your-face humour, over-the-top achievement shots (and the humble but not truly humble, self-deprecating comments, lol), and the surgery scene - take the cake and the cream.

There are three things this show establishes in the very first episode that I love right off the bat:
# You rise like a meteor; you crash and burn like a meteor;
# No guarantee slogging your life away will get you anywhere in real life;
# Depression is real, and it's essential to seek help.

And, of course, PHS - you never can not like this guy. His eyes - when he is trying to save his patient - reel you in the very first frame. And he provides the necessary laughs as well. (And yes, I am still trying to wrap my mind around his switch between the Crown Prince and this crackjack goofball avatar).
Park Shin Hye is fresh and so very natural in front of the camera that it's effortless.
Worry factor: So far, none.
@attiton, I am looking forward to your GIFs for this one, lol!

The drama really drives home the importance of work-life balance.
PHS is totally believable in both avatars - teenager and doctor. While I was most apprehensive about the teenage look, it was the best part and would have been disconcerting to have another actor given the pacing. Eagerly awaiting the new episode. 😍

This was honestly really good! I wasn’t that engaged in the first 10 mins - esp with the usual cringe comedy of drunken ajummas pulling each other’s hair and what not - but then idk, I got pulled in with the struggles each of them were going thru and the merest, intriguing outline of their high school past. Also wow, FL started the hostilities towards him right from the get-go? I want to see her perspective…

Looking forward to tomorrow when they actually meet. I’m assuming hilarity ensues. Also shoutout to jealous doctor sunbae. He may be jealous but he is right, Ml was super pampered by his friends… and look how that turned out…

I am loving Yoon Bak. These two were cracking as brothers in What happens to my family. He also played a doctor in that (while PHS played his jobless younger brother who gets everyone's short end) but this turn is so very different from that potrayal and I am loving it.

I don't think FL is hostile she is just super focused on studying and later working for 17 hours a day, even timing it with a stopwatch without wasting a single second. Yes, it would be nice to look at the scenes from her POV.
I think there is much to be uncovered in the teenage phase so let's unravel it along with the show. 😊👌

Happy to report that while it wasn't fun kind of fun, it was better than my pretty low expectations. Still on the fence of high school whatever and comedy parts, but everyone else was pretty nice. Hyungsik is precious as always - those expressive eyes! - and I always preferred Shinhye in melo over other genres. Maybe it will be like FBND which is my favorite work of hers to date. Title should be DR DEPRESSION though, because a mere slump doesn't quite describe what poor leads are currently going through. More on the plot under recap.

Directing is pretty good - lightning changes depending on the mood, angles... Overly white main filter (plus heavy "dreamy" blur in flashbacks, agh!) hurts my sensitive eyes though - is it result of too many less irritatingly lit historical dramas in a row or I just need some sleep? No glaringly bad styling either - except on the photo above, ha! Now let's see where writing takes us with all that...

P.S. ML coquettishly wondering why the close-up video of him at work went viral had me chuckling. Are you REALLY sure you don't know, babe?)))

And that shot is the best possible camera angle they could take of PHS haha!
I find him like that in real life too. He is somewhat always bamboozled as to how everyone finds him so good looking (it tickles me when it's the men who compliment him because I find that so very rare. He gets this adorable, shy I-don't-know-what-you-are-saying-but-I-will-say-thank-you-anyway look which makes him even more adorable).

3

Actually the one I was refering to was from Suits, where his ZEA team dresses him up for some show right after shoot and everyone was like, Wow. It was a really really cute bts.

3

@attiton Choi Woo Shik went - we didn't want to speak with him because he was so handsome.
That cracked me up LOL!

4

That Woo-shik comment was really fun!

4

I was also thinking how ironic it is for ML to be a plastic surgeon of all things with his natural great looks - wouldn't his patients feel weird about it?)))

2

@Gikata Or just great advertisement ... to get to look like him. 😂

2

@seeker it wouldn't quite work as an ad because his face is not made with a scalpel, let alone his own scalpel. But maybe I'm just not understanding some nuances about what makes people want to get PS because I'm also naturally good looking and only had to fix my teeth as a teen... It's surely a complex topic.

2

@gikata You would be surprised. In another life I used to be an esthetician. And while I took care of myself, I never had the time to do anything more than apply an occasional pack. I am blessed with naturally good skin and hair. And I won the genetic lottery. I had my clients tell me in real that they came to me because they wanted to 'look as good as I do'. And this was only skin care. Imagine if could use a scapel. So I totally get it.

4

@minniegupta1 I see, even tho it's not the very same thing - good skin/hair can be achieved even when you aren't born with them, and in my mind PS is a far more drastic measure... But those lines are very blurred nowadays. Like beauty injections are technically a medical procedure but today everyone does it with the same ease as I trim my nails.

Never been to a cosmetician *shrugs* Would've love to finally meet a good hair stylist tho, but it's probably a futile dream at this point my relatives who own beauty salons wouldn't like to hear that lol...

3

@gikata What I meant was I totally see it that people would be flocking to him and go under the scapel in hopes of looking as good as him. Social media is such a powerful tool, and he is the quintessential influencer.
And I am thinking a big part of the story could be how he can achieve it all back. He is the worst case of an influencer fall from grace. No matter what the verdict of the case, internet would always be divided on someone like him. Many won't even follow up on the verdict, just remember that he effed up.

3

@minniegupta1 heh, it only works if you're intuitively more trusting towards pretty people. I am not - irl at least))) But it makes sense for SK culturally.

You're right, it's quite possible that he'll never achieve that level of success again. Which is not necessarily bad thing, since his former picture perfect life turned out to be nothing more than a bubble...

2

Yea, and one can sense that his flabbergasted response, confusion, and shock to ppl constantly saying this about him is genuine and not some fake-y “Oh shucks, stop it!!” response.
My C-drama 183.6CM (so also 6-ft.) bias beanpole sprout (actor-singer, Sean Xiao Zhan) also gets the same things said and told to him all the time—ever since his debut days— and he has the same reaction as PHS…. He (Xiao Zhan) humbly rates himself a 6/10 🤨🤨🤨😒😒😒😒

5

@Gikata I too agree with @minniegupta1 a doctor's "looks" are very important. I once dragged my mother along to the ENT because of his classical Lord Byron looks complete with a killer jawline and salt and pepper hair.

1

Dr Slump sounds like someone who can't sit up straight.

Perfect description!!

2

"I remember, as I walked out of the hospital..." and out she comes in her white coat, stethoscope and ID slung around her neck, on the verge of collapse, and carries on walking. Straight away it irritated me.

She's a doctor, she's already in a hospital, so why, when she feels so awful and can't keep upright, would she walk away into the street? Not only into the street but into the traffic, and almost cause an accident that would have hurt other people (even if we don't care about her) and right now I don't, because I think she's an idiot.

Women ... here we go again, we are either irrational and impulsive or cruel and calculating. In the very next scene we have her country aunts acting like temperamental out of control babies having a fight with food. Show, please pull back from this brink. Is there a shortage of normal women in Korea? One would think so, considering the amount of abandoned children in dramas that suffer a returning selfish mother on the make at inconvenient moments.

Now we've got the preliminary set-up out of the way, let's hope decisions and behaviour improves.

It’s now top 5 worldwide and within top 10 in >45 countries, highest kdrama on the list.

Would’ve probably been higher if Netflix took “global” seriously. It’s not shown or rather delayed showing in some regions (Brazil and maybe others in LATAM don’t get it until at least end of Feb)

Agreed. I called Netflix mid Jan because it wasn't showing up in US coming soon list, and they told me it's not slated for release in US right now, and asked me to put in requests for its release. I have no idea if it was a miscommunication, or the license team actually woke up, but it started showing up the next day in coming soon list. It's frustrating with these streaming websites. So many good serieses not available to watch in any legal website and then they crib about illegal streaming.

Just finished episode 2 and am hooked. I am starting to wonder how much of my enjoyment is related to my PHS bias versus true quality of the show. Maybe I just don't care and will continue to live in ignorant bliss.

The writer and PD so far like to give you information in the beginning that is explained more in depth in flashbacks later so I am assuming there will be more backstory to YJW's immediate aftermath from the patient bleeding out and the motivation for the framing. It takes quite a bit of malicious foresight to steal a fingerprint and plant it on a heparin vial. Also if the detectives had found it originally at the scene, it should have been in the evidence list prior to trial so it's a bit suspicious if it's actually a corrupt police plant instead which then brings in the larger mobster story rather than just a anesthesiologist out for revenge for some past presumed wrong or something.

I personally am not worried about the 16 episode count. We haven't seen much of the 2ML or 2FL and we know they both each have a kid already which is pretty hard considering they would have had them when they were in medical school/residency at least. I wonder if YJW helped his sunbae out somehow back then.

PHSikki acting is sooooo good. I can't imagine the shifting of thier acting, from melancholy to comedy, however they NAILED it... The STORY, the cinematography, the blocking, everything seems perfect for me, well imperfections made it more interesting though... I sense a jealousy or revenge. Somebody wants to drag him to hell. He is famous, young and successful, he was frame d for sure, the anesthesiologist is sus for me. Well he can be replaced with a brilliant psh soon. Just guessing
