Winners of the SBS, MBC, and KBS 2023 Drama Awards

Our famed “big three” networks ended 2023 as customary with their individual awards shows, where they congratulate themselves – and their stars — on a job well done. Because after a long year of drama production, nothing says congratulations like a pat on your own back. (But we love it.)

Below is a quick summary of the winners.

SBS 2023 DRAMA AWARDS WINNERS

SBS held their 2023 Drama Awards on December 29, 2023, presenting awards – and then more awards — for the stars of their dramas this year. Though it was met with some ruffled netizen feathers with its split Daesang and general “awards for everyone!” vibe, there was also a subtle tribute to the tragic passing of Lee Sun-kyun. For all the fluff factor of these awards, there is also some nice attention given to fabulous actors like Seo Jung-yeon and Kim Won-hae, who deserve the spotlight but instead steal the scene in supporting roles.

MBC 2023 DRAMA AWARDS WINNERS

The MBC Drama Awards for 2023 were held on December 30, 2023, and My Dearest took home the cake — and most of the awards — with the Daesang going to Namgoong Min, and the cast, couple, and drama as a whole also winning a ton. The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract also got some wins. But really, it’s Cha Chung-hwa’s award that makes me want to applaud here. You go girl!

KBS 2023 DRAMA AWARDS WINNERS

KBS held their year-end award ceremony on December 31, 2023. It comes as no surprise that Choi Su-jong grabbed the Daesang over on KBS, and The Goryeo-Khitan War won a lot of awards — but so did The Matchmakers (yay!) and the cast of Oasis. As for the couple and popularity awards here, there seems to be a general throwing of awards like confetti, but hey — nothing wrong with indiscriminate celebrating your top talent and OTPs.

The absolute highlight of all of this is Lee Se-young referring to Bae In-hyuk as a "new man she married" after Junho. I love her.

Cha Chung-hwa's win at the MBC awards earned a delightful shriek from me. I know the cast of My Dearest did a lot to deserve thier win... I just had to take a moment and rejoice with Cha Chung-hwa. It was long overdue.

KBS's Daesang winner was someone i wasn't expecting but i was not surprised either. And then there is Ji Seung-hyun's double win. Gosh! KBS and MBC did better this year.

I can't say for SBS though. I'm laughing at most of the winners, especially when I saw the actors and actresses they went against.

The best part about award shows is seeing our favorite actors dressed to the nines, answering inane questions or playing random games on the red carpet. The fact that most attendees get to take an award as a return gift is a bonus.

Personally, my favourite part, it's when the show is over and fans are filming the actors interacting like normal people, happy to see each other.

That is heartwarming indeed. Even during the broadcast when they are sitting and whispering together it's cute.

Party favors or gift given to guests who attend a event.

Channels should really open their awards to the production crew too. The PD, writer, the persons responsible for : costume/styling, sets, lights, etc.

I'm surprised they don't choose an OST too.

Technical awards are very important. After all they are the backbone of any production.

Don't producers have their own award shows?

There are different awards for : Baeksang Arts Awards, Seoul International Drama Awards, Korea Drama Awards, Grimae Awards and APAN Star Awards.

Blue Dragon Series Awards only gave awards to actors or entertainers.

But it's for all released Kdramas, there are the ones from the streaming platforms too.

Usually, it's the ones with high ratings or a lot of buzz that won.

So it's why it would be nice that small productions could be recognized too.

Is it me or does it seem like they just choose two or three dramas and then just give them all the rewards? So glad that The Matchmakers king was recognised.

How are the weekenders even an option? If that’s the case they should have a separate category and bring in dailies as well because the current daily seems to be getting a lot more praise than either of the weekenders ever did.

@john Pretty much. And, how odd that a number of the winning dramas are not even concluded as yet. I suppose given the parochial nature of such awards, it doesn’t really matter if they started well but jumped the shark at some point after the announcement of the winners.

I have to say, I am really loving and appreciating the monochromatic tone of colours in everyone’s outfits this year for the awards— more so the drama awards, since there are still some who wore colour at the entertainment (variety) awards— and it warms my heart just how much the industry has united together in an unwritten and unspoken way but that everyone knows why. In years previous, there may have been some “complaints” about how plain and monochromatic the outfits are, but I find it to be such a beautiful thing for this year 🖤🩶🤍

The show must go on ... these are all professionals who grind for the sake of their art every single day they show up to work. It was also a way to honor.

Has SBS decided on category to give award for every drama it has aired?
What does it mean by Best character award and best couple award to Real has come - That's quite the reach...

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Critics were not kind to Ahn Jae Hyun's performance and Bak jin hee was lifeless in the last 1/3 of the drama. And yet each gets some sort of "best" award?

SBS is giving away the awards like its candy. They have a lot of categories with multiple winners. KBS is another offender.

This is very true.

I saw the APAN award winners and when you note the competitors in each category, you know whoever wins won it.

Even if SBS is an internal award, there were better competitors to have won the award. And most definitely, they shouldn't have split the wins.

When I saw the SBS winners, I was so confused by how many categories they had for best actor and actress. Is this a new thing? Breaking down the categories as "seasonal", "romantic/comedy", "thriller/action"?

When I saw the KBS winners, I was like "damn, was their no other shows that aired aside from these shows? How out of 7 shows (listed), 6 won most of the awards? How was one of those 6 The Matchmakers?!" Was that show really *that* good? I also thought so all couples *don't* win best couple because the leads of Heartbeat didn't win (then again I saw there were folks who thought they didn't have chemistry and the female lead didn't do well as a lead, especially since it was her first time as a lead)

KBS hah in 2023 6 daily shows, 7 "normal" ones + one with 32 episodes, 3 week-enders, 8 episodes for special drama.

The daily shows are not really rewarded. They don't have drama on Wednesday-Thursday. The week-enders struggled, they don't hit the 40% like before. So the choices were mainly between the Brain Works, Oasis, My Perfect Stranger, Heartbeat, My Lovely Boxer, The Matchmakers and Goryeo-Khitan War.

" Heartbeat didn't win (then again I saw there were folks who thought they didn't have chemistry and the female lead didn't do well as a lead, especially since it was her first time as a lead)"
She previously played the female lead in two seasons of the OTT drama "Juvenile Delinquency" ("Hope or Dope").

Happy for CCH and REVENANT (tho sad that OJS and Shim Dalgi didn't get anything) and MY DEAREST cast. Otherwise... huh. I did not watch many of these dramas, but I know these actors well enough to raise an eyebrow at some of them winning *glances over comments* Seems like I'm not being cynical for nothing...

Sometimes the participation/appreciation trophies do not do enough justice. Sometimes they do. I know I've not been pleased with MBC awards for 2021&2022, but they did better this year.

Look out for Baeksang, APAN, Grimace, Seoul Awards. These ones is a stiff competition between 7 - 10 production houses. Besides the famous 3, we have TV Chosun, jTBC, TVING, and co.
