Choi Woo-shik and Park Bo-young film a Melo Movie

Production has begun for the upcoming Netflix original Melo Movie, featuring a healing romance set in the titular melo genre. Centered around the youthful dreams of individuals in the creative industry, the drama will portray their journey towards mending the wounds of the past and painting a brighter future.

Choi Woo-shik (A Killer Paradox) stars as the supporting actor-turned-film critic Go Gyeom, who eats, sleeps, and breathes film. If Gyeom had forty-eight hours in a day, he’d spend every last second watching movies. Given his proclivity for cinema, it’s practically a stroke of fate that brings him and a peculiarly-named individual together on a film project.

That person is Kim Mu-bi, or Kim “Movie,” played by Park Bo-young (Daily Dose of Sunshine). Having followed in her father’s footsteps out of curiosity towards her namesake, Mu-bi has since risen through the ranks and become a film director. As someone who prefers to stay out of the spotlight, Mu-bi’s career has been characterized by unassuming competence — that is, until Gyeom joins the picture.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have Lee Jun-young (May I Help You) as the idealistic dreamer Hong Shi-joon. Harboring a lifelong dream of becoming an acclaimed composer, Shi-joon believes he possesses the talents of a natural-born genius. However, reality tells a different tale, given he’s still a no-name songwriter. Still, his sunny optimism and quirky personality keep him upbeat and unfazed.

Rounding out our creative quartet, Jeon So-ni (Our Blooming Youth) plays the successful scenario writer Sohn Joo-ah. She may have grown up treading a smooth path and wanting for nothing, but she’s about to throw a spanner into the works — she’s the ex-girlfriend of both Gyeom and Shi-joon. Uh-oh, this is going to get thorny. Still, there’s Kim Jae-wook (Death’s Game) in the cast list, which means I can’t contain my excitement and expectations from soaring sky-high.

Directed by Oh Chung-hwan (Castaway Diva) with scripts written by Lee Na-eun (Our Beloved Summer), Melo Movie has yet to set a release date.

“Mubi”. This is the Korean version of the naming crimes against children. Exhibit 1, Dweezil (zappa).

Daddy Frank Zappa had nothing on Elon Musk, among whose 11 offspring are Exa Dark Sideræl, Techno Mechanicus, and X AE A-XII. Those kids are going to need a good therapist.

For sure. Having Musk as a parent is punishment enough.
I knew about the “names” Grimes and Musk had given to their poor kids but couldn’t remember them in their entirety but remembered Dweezil. Btw, I just looked up Dweezil’s WP entry and turns out there is more to the story:
“ Dweezil's registered birth name was Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa.[6] The nurse at the hospital at which he was born refused to register him under the name Dweezil, to the point of arguing with Gail in the delivery room about it. Rattled at this turn of events, Frank rapidly listed the names of several musician friends, and the nurse added all of them to the birth certificate. "Dweezil" was a nickname coined by Frank for a funny-looking pinky toe of Gail's. At the age of five years, Dweezil learned that his legal name was different, and he insisted on having his nickname become his legal name. Gail and Frank hired an attorney and soon the name Dweezil was official”.

Gail and Frank named their other child Moon Unit Zappa (which I suppose is marginally less bad than their second choice, Motorhead Zappa). She still goes by the name Moon Zappa.

Dropping the Moon part would have made it much easier to handle as a name, right? But Motorhead??
Presumably they would have been given trust funds so wouldn’t have had to live among the hoi polloi so their contemporary nepo babies might have had other - ahem - unique names.

Apparently, she's enjoying a successful career as an actress, author, and musician. I guess the name didn't do any damage.

Ahem ... A for Apple (Martin), B for Blue (Ivy Carter).

When I first read this story, I immediately thought of the drama Awaken. Then I relaxed thinking that they are not that smart to have a supergenius kid. But you know they think it that way.

Why am I more excited for Kim Jae Wook and the second leads? This drama has a good cast.

Yeah, why, aren't Choi Woo-shik and Park Bo-young the leads since their names are first billed? Jk. I'm hoping this is a good written ensemble series!

Their pairing does not excite me. 😂
I like them separately. This drama can change my mind though. For now its KJW and the second leads for me.

I like the writer so my expectations are getting high. But Netflix single drops end up being half-baked most of times.

Ah! lol. I read it as melo movie, meaning a movie in melo genre. Until I saw your comment I thought it was a movie.

Anyway, I will watch it for the cast!

I adore Choi Woo-sik ever since OBS and now that he’s reuniting with the OBS writer, this just shot up to one of my most anticipated dramas. Really hope it’s as nuanced and character driven as their previous work together. I don’t really care for Park Bo-young’s recent drama choices, but hoping this is the turn for the good. Super excited!
