Live Your Own Life: Episodes 38-39 (Drama Highlights)

The Lee family finally gets the lawyer they’ve always wanted, but it’s not Hyo-joon — it’s Mi-rim! Following her motel encounter with Hyo-joon, Mi-rim is pregnant, moving into her soon-to-be in-laws house, and taking a month off work to coach Hyo-joon for his bar exams. Sigh. What has this writer done to Mi-rim? Hyo-shim’s mom is distraught, but there’s nothing she can do other than call the rest of the family over for their runaway dad’s memorial service — which is her usual excuse to throw a tantrum. As an incoming member of the family, criminal lawyer Mi-rim offers to use her vast network of police officers to find the runaway dad, and the ball is in Hyo-shim’s mom’s court to take up the generous offer or not.

Tae-min is happy to see Halmeoni, but as always, he is adamant that his parents are innocent — at least of murdering Tae-ho’s parents. Tae-ho is released on bail, and he announces his intention to sue Chairman Kang and Sook-hyang for embezzlement and other charges, and he also calls for the reinvestigation of his parents’ death. Tae-min strips his mom of all her positions at work and tells her that he knows Halmeoni is alive. Sook-hyang is on her own from now on, and with the prosecution summons and TV Live’s media pressure, she takes out her frustration on Mr. Yeom — who goes on to tell Tae-min that everything began with Halmeoni.

Halmeoni visits the shoeshine shop to confront Chairman Kang, but he maintains that he didn’t kill Tae-ho’s parents — even when Halmeoni says she has evidence (footage from the dashcam of Tae-ho’s parents’ car). Halmeoni covered up the investigation back then to protect Chairman Kang, but she can no longer sit back and watch her grandsons go to war over the case. So she tells her son to turn himself in or she’ll go to the police herself. Chairman Kang collapses, and Tae-min pleads with Halmeoni to help his father. Halmeoni then reveals that Tae-min and Tae-ho are biological brothers, and the show’s makjang-o-meter hits a new high.

Oh boy! Wondering how the next eleven episodes will wrap up.
I'd move to see Uee in a wedding dress.

Thanks so much @unit for the highlights.

It's not official, but apparently everyone is expecting them to add another episode so that Ep. 51 would end on Sunday, March 17. The next weekender debuts the following Saturday (March 23)

Maybe HE is also the father of Taemin and Taeho?? So Taeho and Hyoshim CANNOT be! Which we reveal when UEE in wedding dress will walk down the aisle! 😆😆😆

The actor just recently (like February 19th??) completed the daily soap opera "The Elegant Empire".

Whenever he appears, I expect it will be a cliffhanger. This drama is very good with the major plot twists and cliffhangers.

At one time, that was a possibility, but we eventually discovered that Hyo seong worked with the missing director, so unless the writer re-writes history, it doesn't seem possible.

So here we were, speculating about the Darth Vader Secretary Yeom... and Drama Writer completely beat us, ha ha ha!!

Otherwise, I can't say I was excited about this set of episodes. Mom was back to being rude to everyone, especially to Mirim, and Taemin was stubbornly protecting his father ignoring Taesan and his duties as the Taesan's leader... and ignoring Taeho and and his pain from losing his parents

I was only enjoying Hyoshim and Taeho together (and yes, I like Taeho's joking, patriotism incuded 😄).

Episode 38: Grandma lecturing TM that his duty to protect the company at all costs has to be taken with a grain of salt. How dumb is Evil Mom’s plan to take out the evidence from TH’s account while he was in jail?! $2 million is a cheap way to get rid of him for good as an embezzler. The money would be returned to the company after the criminal case would end - - - I can’t believe a mastermind would that be that greedy to lose sight on the actual end game. TH is smug and arrogant when “leading” the investigation while in custody. Then his announcement that he will “sue” his aunt and uncle for their crimes is another legal blur of idiocy. Again, the rash idiocy of telling the reporters of the allegations without proof again confirms TH flaws and lack of strategic rational thought. TM should have fired TH after his release from jail than having to deal with his damaging behavior.

It was odd that HS could not quickly or directly answer her mom’s questions on why she loves TH. A non-passionate “He’s good looking” was the first answer? And how can she consider TH “meek?” He is the exact opposite. Then they banter about comparing him to HS’ father. Creepy. But it is HS who is meek as TH races forward with their marriage plans without her even saying a word. Later, HS seems to backtrack with the question “if we get married . . .” She is rightfully concerned about dragged into the cesspool of his family’s business scandals. How can he deny it? His arrogance to say he will run the conglomerate to make sure it does not happen again. But there are plenty of enemies already after him. And he has no experience or voting power to take over Taesan. His statement is like Hyo Do’s irrational statement to Tae Hee about his ambition and dreams (through his golden ticket with Taesan).

Suddenly Mirim is an emotional scatterbrain trying to find Hyo Jun? A pregnant scatterbrain! (Has it been two weeks since their hotel stay? 9 weeks since conception for morning sickness?). Hyo Jun (inappropriately dressed as a yuppie) accuses Mirim of seducing him. Right. Then his hiding Mirim from Mom (who already met her) and not going home when she had the chance was another failed comedy bit from the get go. The timeline seems all jumbled as Tae Hee asked for a divorce after 2 months of marriage.

TM terminating all his mother’s positions and titles probably violated all the company bylaws and procedures and the requirement of board action after some internal due process. But the show needs to race along so forget the formalities. And Grandma asking her son if he killed his brother - - - she should have already known the answer if she covered up the accident with the police. Episode 38 was filled with bad writing and pin-ball plot changes.

I'm okay with her being fired, nor because she's the Evil Mom though.

Her culminated actions merited a termination of employment. And yes, her position in the company requires due process for her sack to take effect, I guess the writer should have had Tae-min place her on probation awaiting the board's decision.

Had she pulled a stunt similar to Tae-ho's, then his terminating all her positions without board approval makes perfect sense. But alas! I guess the writer exchanged thier fates. I'd have fired Tae-ho on the spot the moment he set foot into the company. Next, right in his face I'd give instructions to rehire Hyo-sung and give him his long overdue promotion.

But then, the reason he gave to her makes sense. If he is to protect Tae-san, Evil Mom Sook-hyang has to simply be married to the Group and hold no positions whatsoever so when the prosecution comes for her, damage control will be easier.

Episode 39: If I ever met TH in real life, I would just brush him off and tell him to sit at the kids’ table. The only thing in common for TH and HS is having terrible families. Misery loves company, but doubling down by marriage a good thing? At least HS indicated that they have to each resolve their family issues before getting married (or was this just another throwaway line?) Just dating is more sensible than TH’s reckless and impulsive desire to rush into things, including marriage.

TM “offering” a deal to stop investigations is also childish. TM “suing” is not really true - - he filed a police complaint to press criminal charges, but it is the state that will prosecute the defendants, not TH. Prosecutors do not need a complainant to investigate and charge people with crimes so TM’s bargaining with the wrong person. (I really wish simple clarity in these basic facts.)

Translation or continuity error? At cliffhanger Grandma asked if her son killed his brother? Now in next episode she asks “why” he killed his brother. Big difference. Chairman denies it. Another confirmation that Chairman’s father was abusive, turning the Chairman into a habitual liar. Grandma ends saying Chairman is the killer and she has proof (another red herring no doubt; we thought Yeom was probably the driver of the company car). Besides, Grandma taking the dash cam video is a crime of obstructing justice and accessory after the crime. Later, Chairman admits he was driving to the pass with the “intent” to kill his brother but he did not. (Again, it is hard to believe the chairman of the largest Korean conglomerate has this fragile mental state).

The cover up is always worse than the crime. Hyo Sung borrowing off his credit card to deposit his missing paycheck is a road to ruin. He should have told his wife the truth - - she would understand how ruthless Taesan could be since she worked there. Then she could get a grip on reality and save money to save the family.

TM idle threats to TH about his father’s health over the company is trash melo. TH “taking over” Tasean and cleaning it up is a far fetched premise considering he has no voting control over the conglomerate. See, later post.

When Yeom puts TM in his place by telling him it was Grandma who caused all the company woes. To some extent, he is probably right since Grandma apparently has all the brains not inherited by her descendants.

I was troubled by the fake memorial service on the same evening as Ga On’s mother’s service. Mirim's change to criminal law to find Lost Dad is another spin-the-roulette character direction change as bad as her law firm giving her a MONTH off after coming back to work for a month (is her parent a founding lawyer of the firm?).

The bombshell ending from Grandma is pure makjang: a stylistic, tonal, or narrative element in dramas that chooses to play up outrageous storylines to keep viewers hooked despite how ridiculous the stories become (LYOL is now trending...

... towards most or all those elements: adultery, revenge, rape, birth secrets, fatal illnesses, and flirting with incest possibilities). Same father-different mother? Same mother-different father? Both adopted because Kang brothers infertile or genetic defect?

Then I remembered Grandma’s adamant demand that TM not marry Soo-Kyung. She never trusted TV CEO Choi. She said he stole valuable IP from Taesan but there was no ramifications. Grandma’s surname is also Choi. Are they related? Was TV CEO the father of Grandma’s children or grandchildren? Yikes.

However, if you really want to implode this series like no other, I submit this wild speculation for your consideration: TM and TH’s father is HS’ father (who ran away from home after having illicit affairs bearing children.)

This has bothered me ever since TH proclaimed that he would be the new conglomerate King: the Taesan stock control problem. Even if Grandfather founded the company, it grew 2.5 times larger than Samsung. If you use Samsung as the example, the controlling Lee family only owned less than 5 percent of holding company stock but controlled the conglomerate with approximately 30 percent ownership through voting subsidiaries. This amount seems to be the threshold of control as in the SM hostile takeover story. But to grow to a mega-conglomerate, Taesan would have to go to equity markets to gain capital (and dilute founder’s control shares). Thus bankers and equity funds probably would be largest non-family holders (and get board representation). In addition, Korea has cracked down on cross-shareholder affiliations so families using subsidiaries as voting trusts is no longer an estate planning or corporate management tool.

Let’s say that over time, Grandfather kept 50 percent of Taesan. But when he died, inheritance taxes would liquidate half. Grandma would by statute get 6/14 (10.7%) and her sons and grandsons 2/14 each (3.575%) When TH’s parents died, after taxes, TH would have (1.7875%). Unless TM earned stock as part of his compensation package, he would not have any more shares (except for his father’s voting them for him.) Gifting shares to TM would be senseless since inheritance tax would have to be paid on the transfer. In a real world, these shareholder percentage numbers would be a lot less. It is clear the Kang family no longer has enough shares to have voting control.

The idea of embezzling Taesan funds to buy Taesan shares to keep control is plausible, but very expensive and easily traced. The family could use other assets to buy shares but the desperation from the beginning infers that Evil Mom is juggling other major shareholders with favors, etc. to keep control of the company. The idea that shareholders would elevate TH to full control is laughable.

I skipped most of Ep. 38 so perhaps there was some explanation there, but I didn't understand Tae Ho's claims that Taesan Group was somehow in bad shape due to TM's bad management. Just a couple of weeks ago (real time, not drama time), Tae Ho was told that considering TM's achievements, it was to be expected he would be voted into the vice-chairmanship.

And now everything is in ruins?

Am I correct in remembering TH telling the prosecutor that he possessed the evidence? Or did he simply tell him not to worry about it. I need to find the time to watch those scenes from this weekend, but I really don't like watching Tae Ho's smug little face these days.

If I recall correctly, TH gave the prosecutor the Missing Director's secret email documents. But since the Missing Director has not been with the company in a while, and Evil Mom's current charity scam started after TH came back to Korea, I don't know how much relevance there is to those past bad deeds.

The embezzled money was still in TH's account. They were waiting for the funds to be taken out of his account then start a trace (which really makes no sense if the whole plan was to take TH down).

So, at this point, I don't think the prosecutor has enough evidence against Evil Mom or any new evidence to re-open the Pass accident.

Imo, the bad shape comment is directed toward the corruption and embezzlement, ergo bad management here from TM who was completely unaware of what is going on under his nose for years. TH didn't mean the direct financial or business side of things. Also a few weeks back TH also wasn't aware of the paper companies (which tbh, ain't his job to be aware of it like TM) hence the comment toward TM doing good.

Thanks for the recap @unit. Very busy weekend here so I only watched the parts with Tae Min, Grandmother and a handful of others. But even before that ending, the drama was reaching it’s highest viewer rating: 22.1 And what an ending! I don’t have anything to add except some trivia.

For the record, Kocowa and Viki have slightly different translations of that last scene:
Kocowa: Tae Ho is your little brother. You two are brothers
Viki: Tae Ho is actually your biological brother. You two are brothers.

The question will be: are they full or half siblings. There are only a couple of explanations they could come up with that would make sense in terms of the abuse (both verbal and physical) that Kang Jun Bum heaped on TM or granny (who is on my s**t list for actually CAUSING the battle between "the kids" as she calls them) sending TH off to America in the 5th grade.

Finally, for fans of Im Ju Eun (Su-kyung) there was a cute little interchange on Ko Joo Won’s ig page where he posted photos of the upcoming episode at the art gallery:
Im Ju Eun: “It's a very desirable update lol Head of HQ Kang Tae-min”.
Joo-won: “Please come back”
She responded: “Oh my. Can’t help it if you talk like that. . .(. . 😉) [wink]". I know she will return, but afraid it will be some deranged attack on Hyo Shim 😥😥😥

I'm looking forward to reading theories. 😎

They were using the word dongsaeng (동생) which Taemin first used as (younger) cousin. Then Grandma corrected him that Taeho is his real dongsaeng, his real younger brother.

and this is not the first time this writer has dropped a potential love story: That also happened in FATHER I'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU, which also petered out in the end. I had hoped for better from this writer given that she wrote the much better MOTHER OF MINE after that, but it looks like she has fallen back on her old habits.

I am unclear on the age gap between TM and TH. We know TM is about 40 years old. When we first saw TH, was he not finishing graduate school in the US? Would that make him 30ish?

Also, why would Grandma force him in 5th grade (10-11) to the US when he had parents in Korea? Did his parents go with him to run a US affiliate only to return when Grandfather died leaving TH behind?

Re: Age on a family drama. A couple of us have kept track of minor/subtle mentions and the writers seem to keep age/significant events w/in 1-2 years.

One problem is that the year for the accident continues to change, but 2019 seems to be most often mentioned.

Tae Min is 40 years old. Mom was planning his 40th birthday party back in November - I thought we would actually see it, but apparently it was simply a marker for his age.

Tae Ho is 36-37 ("I was in my thirties when my parents died". Also, when TH returned to Korea, chairman said that he was only a few years younger than when his father became Vice chairman - and Dad became vice-chairman in his late '30s.)

The most likely candidate would be the deceased Kang brother- who was grooming Tae-min and not Tae-ho to be his successor. Tae-ho was going to be that fortunate younger Chaebol brother who gets to live the life that he wants to live- backed up by his family's money. Want to run for President? Go for it, kid (of course you have to be elected to lower offices first...).

It is a good theory. Younger Kang brother was engaged to marry but Younger Kang brother had an affair with Evil Mom (yikes), who then seduced drunken older brother to marry her. However, I recall no connection between Evil Mom and Younger Kang except for contempt. And the story line for her marriage was that she was a factory bookkeeper who latched onto drunk Kang as a means to get back into the chaebol class.

I did some researching the last couple of hours and here's some more trivia.

1983: Tae Min born (he supposedly turned 40 last year)

1985: The Art Gallery was established (Ep. 32, Mark 46) and Seo Min Jeong (TH's mom) was the first Director.

If Kang Jun Bum was not married in 1983, then my vote is that TM was the first grandson (illegitimate) and Grandmother insisted he be handed over to the oldest son and his detestable wife. It's one of the very few options that keeps TM a bona-fide Kang because I just don't see how they would take away a child if Seo Min Jeong was his bio mother.

1

I don't see why Jun Bum would not keep his son even if he was born out of wedlock.

I think it is more probable that the Kang wives had affairs and the grandsons are not Kangs by blood since their husbands were a) drunken loser and b) work-a-holic businessman pushed by his grandfather.

Just a couple weeks ago, the speculation was TM's dad was Yeom. The speculation before that was Yeom was Tae-Hee's dad. Could he have hit the trifecta of also being TH's dad?

Yeom is a contender , he does have a close relationship with Madam Jang and he has been dropping several comments that could be construed as he is the father. Of course, it could all just be a red herring.😂
We are at a severe disadvantage by not seeing the deceased Kang couple so we can get an idea of their personality.
Perhaps before his fall into alcoholism, Chairman could have been a smooth talking lover. I doubt this.
Someone either cheated or a child was given away or stolen ? I suspect Halmoni Choi’s hand are dirty in this.
I look forward to see what sort of scenario writer-nim cooks up for us. 🤔

Ah so many possibilities.
The KBS chart shows a line going from Tae-hui to the deceased Mrs Kang 🤔

The term “brother”, does that include half brothers ? Could they be half brothers ?

I’m going to speculate that Mr. Yeom had an affair with the Madam Jang that produced. Tae-Min and Tae-hui. Yeom also had an affair with the deceased Mrs Kang which begat Tae-Ho.

Or
Kang had an affair with the now deceased sister in law Kang, which begat half bro Tae-Ho.
Certainly a few DNA tests would sort this out .

I wonder if the show will have a DNA test result eating scene ala PMR ?

No, this show has no such awesomeness. 😂

My wildest scenario is that TM and TH's father would be HS' lost dad. He abandoned his real family because Grandfather Kang threatened his life since he knows the Kang family secrets.

1

Wait. I have another wild trope speculation. Hospital baby swap!

1

@welh , a swapped stolen or gifted child is a possibility. Do all three of the Kang children share the same birth mother ? The Same father ?
If not then the boys would half brothers.

I do have low expectations from the writer though. 😂

Tae Min was born, by my estimate, in 1983 or so - back then, chaebols did not bring illegitimate children into the family as designated heirs. In order to be The Heir (and he apparently WAS the eldest grandson), the announcement needed to be a legitimate birth.

Of course, I wouldn't mind a scenario where younger son slept with Jang, she got pregnant and then seduced older son to make him marry her. 😊

Dragon Mom frequently moans about "raising" her two kids but I don't recall her talking about the agonies of child-birth, so perhaps there is more makjang to come.

What if Dragon Mom was trying to get into Taesan by trying to seduce younger Kang but she got pregnant by her real BF Yeom. When younger Kang refused to recognize her pregnancy with him, she panicked and seduced the older, dumber Kang. She brought Yeom into Taesan to continue their affair and had Tae-Hee. Yeom, being around the family, also had access to Seo Min.

Of course, this may have been a premarital scam by Yeom to get his girlfriends (Jang and Seo Min) into upper class wealth with his stealth children as his lottery ticket.

You're welcome. 🤣🤣🤣

Tae-ho is being a jerk with Tae-min- who has actually been trying, including having fired his mom from all her positions. Mi-rim is pregnant so what does Hyo-shim’s mom do? Another drama queen performance- Forget turning over a new leaf- this lady is determined to live her life as an infant. But Mi-rim puts her foot down and stops the habitual ‘memorial service’ which that mom has tortured her family with and simply asks her if she would not rather have her help in finding the missing husband. Grandma confronts the Chairman at the shoe shop and tells him to turn himself in but Mr. Yeom tells Tae-min that it was Grandma who started everything that led to the present mess. But perhaps not the way we thought because our episodes ended the week with a birth secret reveal that no one saw coming: Grandma tells Tae-min that Tae-ho is not his cousin but rather his brother. I guess what keeps us coming back is the mystery? Otherwise, this show is a mess. BTW: Grandma needs to tell this to Tae-ho as well, because he continues to be a loose cannon and a total idiot.

If Tae-ho really cares about Hyo-shim and wants to marry her he should care enough about her and his future family to be more prudent. He has been childish instead.

Yes, I too expected more out of Tae-min who simply refuses to talk and whose desperate attempts to find a middle ground fail for that very reason. And I am disappointed in the writer for not getting him a better story line.

I do believe that Tae-ho genuinely cares about Hyo-shim.

Imprudebce shows as much in what he has not done:

He should have gone to a different gym the moment he started dating Hyo-shim, for instance.

He should have asked questions of Tae-min and listened when Tae-min came to visit him at the jail- instead of just announcing that he already knows everything.

I could keep going but actually TH's imprudence has been demonstrated again and again.

He does care about Hyo-shim- but that is not enough. He needs be more careful in his planning or their future will be a disaster. He needs to take responsibility and think about the potential consequences that stem from each potential course of action, instead of this steady stream of impulsiveness.

Caring is not enough. He needs to think things through.

2

@oldawyer
Ok, I thought you had something on mind from this weekend. I agree about the gym (and we already talked about that before), but with respect to Taemin, I more and more think that it is Taemin who should have done and should do some explaining to Taeho and who should stop blindly covering for his (maybe)father and stop being so disrespectful to Taeho's parents' death and Taeho's pain.

I mind more that Taeho left Oppa on his own. That's where I see that he didn’t think things through. But then again all this corporate stuff is a writing mess and I don't want to spend my energy on it... and maybe we all should just relax and enjoy the last 11 or 12 episodes of chaos. 😄

Also, Tae-hui is too smart to participate in something like mom's tantrum. Of course she is not there. Her disrespect of Mi-rim was inexcusable, and I am glad that Mi-rim not only did not put up with it but chose to call her on her excuse for her poor behavior.

"Tae-ho is being a jerk with Tae-min- who has actually been trying"?
Tae-ho is the jerk and Tae-min is trying? Did I misunderstand Tae-min having Tae-ho thrown in jail, in the full media and public glare, and then have the temerity to tell Tae-ho that he should not have made his accusations public and that everything should be resolved behind closed doors within the company?

He fired his mother? Only after Tae-ho's accusations became public, so that could be viewed as face-saving posterior protection. And, can someone satisfy my curiosity as to how his mother was able to wield so much power when he could, with the mere "snap of his fingers" fire her from all positions of power?

Did Tae-min ask Tae-ho why he had kept the wrecked car? No, he had it destroyed.

Tae-min did not throw Tae-ho in jail- that was cooked up by his mother and Mr. Yeom. In fact, you may remember that Tae-min even told Tae-ho that he should dump the Foundation- but he could not explain why he was giving him that warning.

As his Grandmother explained Tae-min has, until now, simply believed what his parents told him, albeit he had reservations about what they did.

Tae-min has continuously been put in the position of having to deal with the fallout from his mom's machinations- including the framing of Tae-ho. He could not spring him because "the evidence was there" - which at that point was true: Do not forget that when Tae-min went to prison not only was the evidence there, but it was good evidence, not manufactured. So he had no way of actually knowing that Tae-ho was framed.

Tae-min could not fire his mom until he became Vice-Chairman- and that just happened recently. Nor was this a face-saving measure- It was recognition that he could no longer tolerate a situation which was so dangerous to both him and the company. He did it to prevent further damage and I might add that he was legally required to do so as part of his duties as matter of preventing further damage to the company.

Preventing damage to the company is the very responsible reason why he asks Tae-ho to handle this matter within the company rather than engage in the public actions which Tae-ho insists upon. Tae-ho refuses to see the need for this- and has no regard for anything beyond achieving vengeance. Tae-ho may claim that he is going to 'clean up the company' but the reality is that he has absolutely no regard for the damage that he is inflicting on interests of the stockholders, employees, suppliers and customers of the firm- so that is just so much rationalization on his part in pursuing the chairmanship against Tae-min. What his actions really confirm is that he is the very last person who should be the chairman (actually it should probably be Tae-hui).

The car was useless as 'evidence'. It was, however, something that Tae-ho had an unhealthy fixation on. Tae-min actually thought he was helping Tae-ho by disposing of it as a mental health measure.

Yes, Tae-min should have asked Tae-ho why he kept the car. This is just one more example of the fundamental flaw in his character: His unwillingness to communicate. Tae-ho exacerbates this by his constant attacks on him. They are not even simply accusations: Tae-ho has already decided what the truth is, and Tae-min will not be permitted to respond, which makes communication even harder given Tae-min's habit of silence.

Dramatically has the birth secret reveal changed any of this? We shall see.

We will have to agree to disagree. As I have noted before, I am baffled by the apparent desire to make Tae-min into some sort of sympathy-deserving victim rather than the perpetrator of much of his misfortune.

I stand to be corrected, but I recall a discussion during which Tae-min said something to the effect "I had to do it because the evidence was so strong." I took that to mean he was the one who threw Tae-ho into jail, even though his mother orchestrated everything. Not certain how you can square "warning Tae-ho to dump the foundation, but he could not explain why he was giving him that warning" with "he had no way of actually knowing that Tae-ho was framed" and "having to deal with the fallout from his mom's machinations".

Maybe Tae-ho had an unhealthy fixation with the car, but Tae-min is not a medical professional and was certainly not justified in getting rid of the car in secret.

Finally, his mother's machinations made him Vice-Chair.

Tae-min did not orchestrate the framing of Tae-ho. That was what I meant when I said that Tae-min did not put him in jail. At the time that he went all he knew was what the Prosecutor had as evidence- so he had no choice but to cooperate. So Tae-ho is in fact wrong to simply assert that Tae-min put him there. In fact, while his mom and Mr. Yeom may have orchestrated the framing of Tae-ho it is not technically correct to say that they did it either- only the prosecutor on a warrant issued by the court could do that- and Tae-min had no part in that beyond having been confronted by the evidence which his mom had arranged. He may have seen the potential danger but he did not know that his mom had manufactured the evidence. As a responsible corporate officer, he really had no choice, just as he said, but to sign the complaint.

I agree that Tae-min certainly acted unjustly in getting rid of the car. He was wrong.

Could I point out that part of the fallout from his mom's machinations was spending time in prison. You can see why she thought he would continue to be her pawn after those machinations made him Vice-Charman. What a shock to her when he fired her after finding good cause to do so.

This was actually his first real step towards Tae-min's independent life. It is a pity that it took this much to finally take a step in the right direction.

In fact, I too do not see him as a victim per se. Only Tae-min was keeping Tae-min in chains. If I am frustrated with Tae-ho I am at least equally frustrated with Tae-min and frankly wanted to slap him out of his pity parties. His lousy childhood was as bad an excuse as the self-pitying engaged in by Hyo-shim's mom.

1

I agree with you and I still can't wrap my head around the hate for Tae Ho and all the excuses made for Tae Min. He's not perfect, he's impulsive and a little childish, but he's not a bad person. He genuinely loves Hyo Shim and wants to start a family with her. The way I hear him described is as a loose cannon who is pressuring his girlfriend into marrying him when she is more than strong-willed enough to say no if she means no. Tae Min had multiple opportunities with Tae Ho to bridge the gap. Instead, he has been treated like a mushroom, kept in the dark, and fed shit. He says that he cares about his parents and wants to protect them, but doesn't appear to understand that Tae Ho also cares about his parent too, if they were murdered by their own family, he has to know.

The issue with Tae Min is that he has a distinct lack of empathy. He was unable to connect with Hyo Shim because he was only focused on himself. He was unable to connect with his wife because he couldn't stop thinking about himself long enough to see her genuine desire to form a connection. And he treated Tae Ho like an intruder and refused to answer his legitimate questions.

He worships his parents who consist of a weak-willed, possibly murderous father and a machiavellian mother. He trusts where trust is not deserved, and shuts out the people around him.

THIS. It left me speechless that TM said to granny that bc his parents are still alive they are way more important bc TH's are already dead, so it is no use crying over spilled milk, basically. TH should just deal with it and move on/ be happy. He openly said also while he does not give a single damn about his pain bc his parents are more important and called himself a bad cousin as if this would absolve him from everything. It once more shows that TM has, unlike TH, a very low EQ (emotional intelligence) and a complete inability to emphasize with other people and their perspectives. It is all about him/himself and his very very narrow cosmos. Complete tunnel vision. It is something that has been consistently part of his character from start to now with how he disregarded everything HS told him, especially when she voiced her disagreement and told him no bc he did not want to hear that, and never listened to her in general while monologuing at her constantly. TM being standoffish toward TH as he tried to reconnect with him, and feed him lies when he asked questions and generally treated him like a threat and intruder instead of a family member. No wonder TH gave up trying then along the way. Then ofc the sham of a marriage where only his "woe is me" was important, and he was emotionally incapable to recognize her attempts to connect with him or even treat his wife like a human being bc, again tunnel vision and inability to think even a little out of the box and see the other person. He is simply unable to unless outer circumstances force him to, and the plot twist does exactly that. Which is why it was needed in order to shatter this dude's tunnel vision and make him look left and right for the first time in his life. In fact, since he made it clear he is hellbent on protecting his "parents" even now, shaking up that very narrow cosmos he cares about is the only way to make him course-correct now and actually care about uncovering the truth of the accident/murder, bc now he is directly "involved" instead of passively glancing in from the outside, shrugging.

Meanwhile, TH is demonized here for wanting clarity about his parents' death which is a very personal pain and trauma, at that. But he is also a foil to TM. Empathic and emotionally intelligent he observes ppl, listens and react accordingly which shows especially with HS. He listens to and genuinely cares about her, her family, his co-workers and cause with the foundation to support financially less fortunate students too (sadly it is a slush foundation as we know) He owns up to his mistakes, and apologizes (unlike TM) And he is respecting the life HS has led so far and does not try throw money at her problems nor to buy her affection with nice things. The refrigerator for her apartment is, in fact, something she asked him for as a housewarming gift. He enjoys homecooked meals a lot more than fancy restaurants and is, given his rich chaebol bg, very much down to earth all things considered. He is, as he said, the cinderella blessed with having met HS, not the other way around :D Also i feel ppl here missed how they discussed that it is surprising to both of them how quickly he and she found the wish to get married and build a life together (the talk in the gym a few weeks back) At no turn or point is he pressuring or manipulating HS into that direction because lol, HS ain't the hapless maiden ppl here make her out to be who can be pressured into anything she does not want, and her evolution of her feelings for TH are noticeable in voicing her concerns regarding their relationship/future together (which they then talk about as TH takes her and her feelings serious) and being much less shy in showing her affection openly toward him by now. Which is normal as it was a natural process of her becoming comfortable with loving someone and within the rlship itself btw and not an expression of her "not even liking TH" or other nonsense. If she doesn't want something you can rest assured that she will let the other know about it, especially by now.

That being said, TH is not perfect of course, he can be impulsive when it comes to matters he cares about deeply and/or perceives as injustice due to having a strong moral compass, hence he has some blindspots too. But it comes from a place of good intention and his need for closure in regards of his parents and hold ppl accountable for their crimes instead of letting them get away with it over and over again. Not because he is hellbent on revenge and want to see everyone suffer/burn while he cackles with malicious glee as he is portrayed here, lmao.

TH indeed has all the qualities that you describe. My problems with him is how he habitually acts without thinking.

1

Very well put. I think a perfect example of the difference in the emotional intelligence levels of the two cousins/brothers is when they entered the office. Tae-min walked past the staff and went into his office without acknowledging them, whereas Tae-ho stopped and asked them how they were.

1

Much of how you describe Tae-min is spot on. That he has a low EQ was demonstrated in spades by the way he treated Hyo-shim and yes, indeed, his wife.

I do believe that he still wants to protect his parents but he no longer trusts them, believes them and understands the situation more clearly now.

Hmm yeah, but TH's biggest flaw is being too impulsive/emotional at times, while TM actively chooses to cover up embezzlement and possibly murder, even after knowing the truth (minus the plot twist) about his "mother" bc he sees it as his duty as son to protect even criminal parents. and himself as a good person for it (in a way) Like, he is incapable to notice what an impact his actions have on others around him. And while TH is always portrayed as "as bad or even worse" here than TM with his actions, these two things or flaws or whatever you wanna call it, don't have the same gravitas, especially not morally. One is trying to find the truth, while the other attempts to *bury* it. Not the same. I feel TM is kinda akin to a bystander in a school bullies group, just watching at the sidelines and never taking part in the beating/humiliating, but also ready to rat out any victim that could turn the focus on himself or his bully friends. Just gotta replace the bullies with his "parents" here and the comparison is pretty apt imo.

So I look forward to whether TM is now change tunes after knowing the truth about his own bg, since it is shoving him in the center of it. Or if he tries to ignore it and keeps blindly plowing forward as always. The upcoming weekend will be interesting to see, and also regarding the emotional fallout for TH to follow here 😬 I foresee HS needing to give him a lot of supportive hugs tbh :(

1

Oh that being said, no i don't see TM as evil, but sometimes or rather often people who are THIS ignorant and callous to everyone around them and their pain/perspective are even worse than the bad people who actively choose to do harm. With TM it is the complete and absolute absence of awareness for me that in turn makes me incapable to feel sorry for him. Especially since he sees himself as a victim in all this, while paving his own road to hell, alienating every single person around him. (If HS with her infinite amount of patience and kindness gives up on you or rather indirectly calls you a crappy person, you better sit tf down and rethink your life choices tbh 😂 🙃)

That latest news is unexpected. I can't believe that Tae Min and Tae Ho are bio brothers.

Now that I think about it, this was written in from the start, but they distracted us Mr Yeom as red herring. It was mentioned multiple times throughout the drama that Tae Ho's mum was kind and loving towards Tae Min, and Tae Min implied that she was important to him too. Compare that with how his supposed mother treats him. Tae Min also gets his fondness for art from her.

So for many episodes now I have been absolutely appalled at Tae Min's total lack of concern that his aunt, who was kind and loving to him, may have been murdered, and his complete lack of empathy + unfounded contempt for the son they left behind. "The living must go on." "I'm sorry but this is the limit of my character". Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh dear. I guess they needed this twist for Tae Min to ever see the light, because he was hell bent on saving his "parents" at the expense of everyone else. Realising the very people he was trying to throw under a bus were/are his actual family is the only way Tae Min would ever see the light.

Now that you put it this way, I can actually see the dramatic sense in all of this, including the reason why his 'official' mother sees and uses TM the way she does. You are probably right about why this reveal was dramatically necessary.

I get now why i am so drawn to the lead couple here and how they are written. They act like grown ass adults in a relationship, full stop. They support/help and give each other reassurance when needed, they communicate well about their thoughts and feelings and fears regarding their relationship. And best of all there is no psycho delulu second female lead proclaiming ML as her property like in way too many kdramas, be it regular or weekenders (Well SFL did that to TM but who th cares since HS was never interested in him to begin with) They face any crisis together (and sometimes on their own bc they must; HS with quitting her gym job and choosing TH here. Which turned out being the best option for her, in being a PT on her own now with enough time to study. And TH facing prison for setting his plan in motion and putting his shitty fam on medial blast) instead to run away in a fit of noble idiocy. In fact, the whole prison incident just had strengthened their bond and resolve to stay and be together. I even think that HS only became really aware of the depth of her feelings for TH after she faced the possibility of losing him for a long time due to looming imprisonment/criminal charges. It's also what made her discard her prior shyness and finally freely express her affection and love for him in hugging him at every turn, to tell him to not leave her alone again this way. She really was afraid to lose him and i am glad the writer nim made it clear to the viewers.

Like, an undervalued part this weekend in all the plot twist craze was how well they showed and voiced their fears, concerns and wishes for their future together and talked about it, like, gosh adults should do in a relationship? Which sadly is all too rare in dramas nowadays still. And the writer nim possesses such a good awareness of the viewers in regards of their relationship too. Because as all went to shitters on both of their fam's sides (and still is) I caught myself thinking... god are the both aware what they gonna have to put up with in the future? Are they willing to do so or will they give up? And guess what not only a few minutes later you see HS and TM sitting down and talk about how exhausting and toxic both of their fams are and how they have to deal with it, once married. How worried HS is about the gremlin getting to know about TH's rich rich riiiich chaebol bg, with her suggesting that maybe they should just date instead maybe but TH managing to lighten that fear with humor while reassuring her. Both act mature and realistic with their expectations and wish of having their own family together after what they lived through with their respective own toxic fams. Aka they know it will be hard at times but ultimately worth it. Also HS being aware what it means for her to be his wife with him being a conglomerate heir/son. Not a cinderella story at all, if anything this couple is the anti-trope of that, and very down to earth and realistic with how it is handled in...

...with how it is handled in the narrative.

I also loved so much how she addressed her fear of being left behind with their children later on if such a bad situation like being arrested and imprisoned should repeat in the saturday episode. This shows writer nim has a good good grasp on her characters and their motivations, especially the leads, because it ties into her backstory with her father leaving them on her/their own and of course she would not want the same to happen to her children later on. Good good shit. And it is so good to see as well that the writer made her voice that concern instead to stomach and play it off as though everything is fine. This is how you make a relationship work and believable in a story, ngl. (And when TH talked about how he wanted a bustling household with two girls and two boys, you saw how she was way less opposed to that idea with her smile at the end than she was in the furniture store way back, which was cute and shows the development of their relationship since 🥰 )

They have such an innate understanding of each other BECAUSE and not in spite of their shitty families as they both lived the crushing loneliness and not being appreciated , if each in their own different ways. (been noticing that from the scene of their phonecall we had in eps 7 actually how both struggle with loneliness, having no one on their side) A very poignant scene here was where TH called HS when he was exhausted and sad and expressed his wish for creating his own family to her once more because he wants a family that comforts instead of just stresses, disappoints and betrays him and when HS said "I know exactly what you mean with this" I teared up a little at that.

Because it made it so clear how well they understand each other. These are two people who have the same lived experience if in disparate social circles yet so alike, speaking the same language. Sure, TH grew up comfortably without worries about money ever and such and he possessed a freedom HS never had before breaking free from her fam, but he was also estranged from his family, left alone in another country and feeling lonely. No one really cared about him or what he did, he had not much of a support system especially after his parents death and grandmas imprisonment... err disappearance. He likes HS' fam and does not mind the chaos because he had never experienced such bustling family life on his own, and thus envies her for it in a way. It explains why he wants a family of his own and a big one at that. Again writer nim shows a good good grasp for her characters here, it all makes sense with how and why he (re)acts, his motivations and goals/wishes are in line with his background established.

I am such a sucker for the trope/couple of two people in a story finding each other at the most unlikely time and ways and support each other at their lowest point while becoming each other's family and source of strength/support and happiness. if done well and here it is. It definitely is, and in a healthy, mature manner, at that 🥰🥹

Lol, i tend to read these threads but never comment bc i never seem to gel with the opinions here on DB in general, and the whole worshipping of TM as faultless little angel and proclaiming TH being a manipulative abusive devil who is hellbent on revenge is boggling my mind. Especially in regards of his relationship with HS. Like, i feel we are watching different shows honestly. Hence this (long) bit of positivity toward the main couple that i posted on MDL bc i feel it is kinda needed to balance things out a little 🤷‍♀️

2

When I read your comment, "These are two people who have the same lived experience if in disparate social circles yet so alike, speaking the same language.", I sat back did a bit of thinking. What I take away from that sentence and the show is that even if you have family around you (like Hyo-shim), if there is no empathy and support, you can be as lonely and isolated as someone who is on their own in a different country (like Tae-ho).

I applaud the writer's ability to implicitly make that statement, rather making it obvious.

Haha, it happens with a show as long as this one. I guess this was the first time where it clicked for me how similar both of these leads are/why they are written like this, and this despite their differences in social circles etc. Because they are both utterly alone, with no one to lean on/confine in or at their side. It was such a poignant scene for me that i never forgot it. I made a post about it here long ago:
