Well done Flex X Cop and Goryeo-Khitan War for being consistent in your ratings! And that's some ratings for QoT and Wonderful World.

Happy for wedding impossible. Hope it can improve.
Not surprised by QoT ratings. Its one of those many dramas where my enjoyment and ratings don’t match 😄
Glad to see Flex cop ratings, am excited to continue (at Ep 5 now).

I will finally get to watch FLEX X COP as I started my temporary Hulu subscription yesterday. I have to admit that the reason for this action is actually SHOGUN but there are a couple of other shows that I have been looking forward to as well.

Shogun is wonderful and I am really enjoying it. Hope you enjoy Flex too! It is a fun drama.
I think there a quite a few dramas I did not watch when it aired (as I didn't have Huku), so I will catch up on those.

I am sure that this subscription will last longer than my brief stop with Disney+.

It has been less than 24 hours since I signed up and I already have 17 shows and movies listed in "My Stuff" (Hulu's watchlist function).

I’d say you’re doing well there with your newest subscription..

Btw, is Tell Me You Love Me available there? I still think you and your wife might like it.

TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME is available there and is one of the shows that I added to "My Stuff".

Queen of divorce got 5.8%? Waow the drought in kdramas during the week helped a lot.

Yep it helped them a lot. More the reason that dramas should be spread out more.

I was just thinking that too! The ratings are reflective of a lack of choice and considering how well MMH did on a weekday slot - there is an audience there.

It had a 5.8 rating for one episode previously so they did well to match their highest rating and bow out gracefully.

LOL!!

Considering the years and years spent in anticipating his first role as ML - this just made us hope for a better drama. 🤷‍♀️

That is a big jump for Queen of Tears. Its a good thing!
I am on the fence with it. I will give it two more episodes to decide if its my new weekend drama.

Can’t say I’m marginally surprised by QOT’s ratings. It had a ton of hype going into it and it was topped with a whole lot of positive feedback from both media and kviewers. This one’s a little predictable. It’s also my crack drama rn. It’s SO GOOD.

I’m hoping we get some more weekday drama to balance things out. I don’t believe Goryeo-Khitan war is being replaced by anything, so hopefully KBS utilizes a weekday slot because the weekends are just way too heavy rn. It’s the only reason Queen if Divorce would be getting 5+% in ratings 😅

After episode 1 of Queen of Tears, I won't be shocked if the ratings half-doubled cause damn! I was drawn in immediately by the comedy and hijinks. I've not watched episode 2 yet but I expected a massive draw in.

Here's to QoT maintaining the momentum till the end of its run.

Is this the ratings pump that occurs in the penultimate and final weeks for Live Your Own Life?

I hope Dr.Slump gets back its 8% or reach 10% for the finale. Except for the TOD trope, it was good.

Good for Queen of Tears because I enjoyed it, but I doubt it can beat CLOY's rating.

I always think CLOY’s rating was buoyed by worldwide lockdown accompanied by Netflix’s global footprint. It’s not an exaggeration that many non Kdrama watchers had CLOY as their first Kdrama.

Both CLOY and The King: Eternal Monarch were watched worldwide thanks to the lockdown.

4

Required fields are marked *

CLOY aired from mid-December to mid-February, and the lockdowns didn't start in earnest until mid-March, so I don't think COVID had anything to do with its actual ratings. Now, it's certainly true that many international viewers watched it after it had aired, likely because they were stuck home due to the pandemic, and that's also probably why it became such a global phenomena.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, CLOY’s global phenomenon has much to do with the tale end effect (as opposed to live watch). It was built on word-of-mouth in addition to being a hit in Asia. So much so people were willing to watch something ‘different’ during lockdown and fell for the Kromance like most of us did here.

I agree. Among my my network of friends in the US and abroad, most of them watched CLOY because of word of mouth. It was the gateway drama for most of them.

This coming weekend will see the final episodes of LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE. There may be a slight ratings bump then but this show ended with a sort of paint by numbers feel and an unneeded final story arc that simply leaves other business unattended to.

GORYEO-KHITAN WAR became better, but my original criticism of the unrealistic battle scenes remains. But decent ratings.

WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE should be doing much better than this. I realize that these are decent enough for Monday-Tuesday but it deserves more love.

Hurrah for QUEEN OF TEARS!

Ditto on Wedding Impossible. In the past, I’d have blamed a lack of star power but that hardly deters good dramas in the past could have years. It’s sometimes really hard to predict what would or wouldn’t do well in the ratings game.

@oldawyer, a follow-up from last week’s RR.
After 32 episodes THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR’s average Nielsen Nationwide rating is 9.65%. The ratings ranged from a low of 5.2% for episode 3 to high of 13.8% for episode 32-final).
In comparison, the average rating for THE KING OF TEARS: LEE BANG WON (2021/2022) was 9.7%.
Let’s call it a tie. Thank you Viki for licensing both dramas.
Confession. I watched (and enjoyed) through episode 10 of GKW and then got distracted and too far behind and didn’t return.

Your sidebar shows Goryeo-Khitan War to have episodes 33-34 this week, but I watched what I thought was the finale last night. Asianwiki states 32 episodes, so ?

DB’s sidebar is definitely incorrect. This was Goryeo-Khitan War’s finale week. It ended strongly too. Probably a lot lower than what KBS initially expected before airing, but the ratings consistently went up ending at a high. I think that should be considered a win.

Ah, that’s why in the intro to the ratings there was no send-off remarks for Goeryeo-Khitan War, which made me sad. The DB staff poster must think there are episodes left and doesn’t now that it ended at 32.

I am very happy for Impossible Heir and intrigued by Wonderful world (an actor is keeping me away from it, but I might actually give it a try).

Mix them up?!? Impossible!

Between the crossover chaebol family structures, dual/illegitimate MLs and their traumas, and the shared supporting actors, I'm constantly getting confused about who's who and who's doing what in both Impossibles as well as FlexxCop.

I don't generally pay much attention to ratings, I just hope shows I like get good numbers so there will be more of them - but since "shows I like" is nearly impossible to categorize, I can't expect either the Korean viewing public to share my tastes or production companies to draw the correct conclusions.

I wonder if QoD is getting as wildly divergent reactions in Korea as it is here on DB.

I thought everyone here didn't enjoy QoD. Did you mean QoT?
The confusion with the Impossible and Queen titles!!

3

@mayhemf I swear, I can't keep track of the titles any more. From Lovely to Impossible to Queen - and the fact that all of them are even dressed the same way.....

3

@mayhemf Yes! I meant Queen of Tears. Grrr. All these similar titles are ridiculous.

3

The best bit is when we auto correct and respond to what we knew you meant without even noticing we have done that. I assumed Queen of tears without registering what you had actually typed.

2

I was going to respond to your QoD question then realized you’re asking about Tears 🤪🤣

Divorce - I’ve been following despite not watching for some reason (read: weekday boredom) Knetz aren’t exactly negative or positive towards it. Just meh all round till people stopped discussing. No blog posts, the chat rooms have little to no acrucify even during live airing. The kmedia tho, was pretty ruthless to the drama early on.

Tears - I’ve honestly yet to read a negative article (it’s mostly praises for performances and humour). Knetz reaction is the same other than some comments on plagiarism/writer saga. But early days still for sure.

3

I’ll never understand the SK population and their preferences for dramas: QoD has higher numbers than Doctor Slump? Do they detest romcoms? This one is also with a murder mystery, what do they want more???

QoT, I mean.

P.S. My opinion is based on Beans’ comments on it on their fanwalls only. I haven’t watched it because it looks like a headache ride.

Do they detest romcoms?

But Queen of Tears is a romcom (apparently).

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Though they are both in the romcom category and airred on Netflix (though different channels).QoT has very big names from Kim Soo Hyun to the supporting/cameos. And Kim Soo Hyun tends to be very picky with dramas and doesn't act in many dramas. Plus, the production crew is a plus. The writer itself is known to come up with fantasy hit romcoms. Big names tend to sell.

In other words, if Korea is showing two romcoms at the same time, there might be something that distinguish QoT and Dr Slump. In this case, it is the star power cast and the production crew themselves.

1

Required fields are marked *

I think Dr Slump didn’t really get a good reception early on from SK media despite it having two buzzy stars. It’s also not as hyped going in maybe?

Tbh, I dropped Dr Slump so I’m not sure what’s happening in the drama but I don’t think it’s the genre issue. Crash Course on Romance, Welcome to Samdalri and King the Land are all pretty recent rom-com hits with high ratings.

It’s always hard to tell what drama will be rated high but frankly QOT has the hype, a powerhouse cast and a very competent production team. On top of that, not sure about the beanies wall since I don’t really go there, but the reception for the drama has been absolutely positive across the board.

The drama and the cast topped the chart of hype and popularity. But somehow they don't match with the ratings.

Required fields are marked *

Oh I dunno why I thought they didn’t! I do know it’s doing really well on Netflix but didn’t realize it was popular in Korea… back when I watched the first few episodes, I know the kmedia gave it mixed reviews but I don’t think that’s fundamentally the reason for the low ratings.

2

Required fields are marked *

I don't understand the low rating of SK either. It has been consistent on Netflix, staying at top 10 for all the eight weeks, with more than half of them in top 3, and that could be because global audience does not differentiate between stars and mega stars of SK.

1

Wasn't Dr.Slump competing against Honey Lee's sageuk drama and FlexXCop? They all aired/air at the same time with + or - 30 min difference.

2
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think so. Plus it's paid channel vs free ones, so that's there too. Still, I don't think they can be valid as excuses for low ratings. My problem is that with such dramas doing so well outside of SK might mean Netflix will pour more money into such shows (and cast) and eventually having a lot more say in how the show must be made, taking away from the usp of these shows that make them so endearing.

1

Both Flower Knight and Flex X are Friday-Saturday dramas. Dr Slump is an Sat-Sun drama so the competition should’ve been for just 1 day. Despite that, other than the one time, Dr slump’s even numbered ep ratings aren’t drastically different…

I’m really not sure what drives ratings in SK excluding dramas that are absolute top tier. Even Jirisan baffled me with how well it continually did… never reached the heights it undoubtedly wouldn’t had it been remotely good, but still.

3

I think it might be because of the main plot lines of the story that directly deal with mental health problems. I somehow believe it’s still not viewed as common there… that’s the only excuse I could come up with.

Or is it because the FL is nor married and has a child?

1

Or is it because the FL is nor married and has a child?

That's unnerving because you are right, the ratings dropped episode 10 after the kiss, while it shot to top on Netflix.

1

Correction!

Dr Slump is a TvN production, not a Netflix Original production. Netflix is only an airring platform for Dr Slump. The one pouring in money is TvN or whatever production house in Korea.

2

Must just be a difference of tastes. I too was surprised it wasn't able to match the ratings for the show that preceded DS, Welcome to Samdari, which I didn't enjoy as much. Sadly QoT is now directly competing so it will be harder to get back to 8% or hit double digits for the last 2 episodes.

Anyway, I’m happy enough we have Doctor Slump regardless of how well it does in SK. I think I have a me m-problem with Kim Soo-kyun: never be able to be immersed in any of his projects. And as someone mentioned above, his lead ladies have been quite… scary. 😱
